Window Mistreatments: 401

These mistreatments are for the advanced mistreater. If you're new here you can read about easier mistreatments here and here. If you are too lazy to click on those links, I'll define the term for you

Mistreatment: (n). covering for a window that is quick, cheap and pretty. may or may not need hardware does not require sewing. a real designer's worst nightmare.
Mistreating: (v). the act of treating a window with dignity and respect without use of the following: hundreds of dollars, sewing, time, crying, divorce, child neglect...
I mistreat my windows. I know how to sew but try not to do it unless I must. I can find fabric for super cheap and have had so much fun just tacking it right to the walls. We have a bizillion windows in our rental house and I am not about to purchase rods for all of them. I would much rather spend the money on fabric.

Using my glue gun who goes by the name Pricilla, upholstery tacks {refer to above links to see where to find these} drapery clips, and the occasional rod I pick up at a yard sale I can dress a window while my boys watch "How it's Made" and be done in time to have a snack ready. And so can you!
I don't even need to go into the details for you expert mistreaters {you know who you are} but, for everyone else, this is a double mistreatment. The first layer is a topper. I ripped the fabric to get a strait line and avoid the painstaking task of having to lift those heavy scissors and cut. Then, I folded, tacked, folded, tacked, folded, tacked. The top part was done.

The side panel was part of a pair I made for my old room. We only had one window. Now we have three windows in our room. I split up the pair and flanked the room with them and they kind of frame the bed. Wow, I just saved myself two panels!

I didn't have enough fabric for 2 full panels so I used some remnants from my bed skirt. What a great solution to what could seem like a big problem. Remember there are not problems when decorating--only opportunities to be creative! When using two fabrics on a window try to make it about 2/3rds one fabric and 1/3rd the other fabric--that is more pleasing to the eye as they say but, I think it's more pleasing to both eyes.

I'm so glad that I didn't have enough fabric--if not I wouldn't have added that extra punch on the bottom. I just hot glued it. Yes, I hot glued silk. I hot glued $35 dollar a yard silk. Stop the world. I was done in 2.2 minutes and it looks great. If I every want to take it apart and use the fabric for something else, I can just peel off the glue. I even glued on the fringe to cover the glue seam.

Try to ignore the bright orb in the window. It took me 3 days to get these pictures and they aren't even good. I hope you can see everything ok! If you are totally enthralled with our bedroom, you can read more about it here.

Great mistreatments, just lovely. I will have to go out and purchase a Priscilla, I don't have one !

I have a question - when you move do you have to fill all the holes in the walls ??

Love your site,
Karen

Oh my, oh my.. I LOVE IT! That is something I could do.. if only I could find some fabric to go with (not match) my bedroom.. Come on over to my blog later on today, I'll do a post on the Expensive Quilt.. and you can inspire me (if you want to, totally optional, I'm not forcing, but rather, begging!!!) I have terribly ugly sheers up now, and I dream of having beautiful mistreated windows!

Love it Nester! I did this in my bedroom with my bookcase (the shelf contents are not pretty) and a flat sheet I had. Only, I used plain ole thumb tacks - though they do match and the whole thing actually looks really nice.

Your room is so beautiful!!! I love the blue and browns. Can you tell me where you got the fabric for the pillow in the middle of your bed...the kinda plaid/striped one. I think it would look great on my new slip covers. (you can check my site to see them.) I love all the toile. Where did you find that too?

Imitation is the best form of... oh, I just love your style...LOL!

Susan, I have no idea where I got the plaid--well, i know where i got it but it was one of those crazy backroom finds that had no name or maker.

The garden toile is a Braemore and was readily available over the past 2 years, I'm not sure how easy it is to find it now but, I bet you could get ahold of it!

Cute, cute, missy! You sure have a way with that glue gun. I love my glue gun too, but never tried it for this. I have to say, it looks great though, so more power to ya!

I copied you on the scrapbook paper backing your china cabinet & did it on my bookshelf...will post soon! I'll let you know when I do, cause I will mention your inspiration.

I was happily awaiting your next post and ta~da here lies mistreat window coverings. I love them! They are so unique and all your own. What I like most is that no one can buy these babies so they are true masterpieces.

By the way, after longing for a gumball machine like yours, the other day I came across a blue one that was $5 bucks at the Salvation Army. With 25 cents for each very small gumball I might add there are some still left.

Hugs~ Renee

I always enjoy reading your blog. It makes me laugh and feel like I don't always have to strive for perfection to have a beautiful home. If you weren't such a good decorator, then I would suggest you become a comedian! Your writing is very creative and funny. Thanks for all the great info without being boring!

Okay Nester, I need a tutorial on Priscilla. I am starting to realize there are some things Stanleah is just not capable of (did you see the foot stool she attacked on my post yesterday?) She is good for a lot, but she can't marry two pieces of fabric like Priscilla.

So, here are my questions. Where do you do your hot glue-ing, on a table, on the floor, right there with the curtain hanging on the wall? Is your gun cordless? I have one of those mini low temp guns and it doesn't seem to get the job done. Do I need to go bigger or is it the low temp?

I really don't know how I can call myself a crafter when I can't master the hot glue gun...please help.

You are amazing! I don't think I've ever seen a prettier room. I can sew, too, but find I procrastinate on making things for the house because it takes so much time. You may have a new glue gun recruit. :-) Rosie

I just need to get my bootie into our new house already so I can go on a redecorating binge...your (mis)treatments are fantabulouso!!!!

P.S. Anything toile gives me the shakes. LOVE it!!

Hello, I am a fellow Charlottean. You said in your bedroom post that you get great fabrics for $5 a yard at a local fabric store. Would you share the name of the store? I have a house full of windows that are in dire need of mistreatment. Miss Kris

The Nester said...

Hi there annon. Charlotte person!

Nice to meet you!

We moved here in June from another city in NC! So, most of this fabric I got at my favorite fabric store in Thomasville/High Point it's called 1502 Fabrics and you can see it from Business 85 {old 85 is what the locals call it} take the W. Green Drive exit. It's about one hour from me now.

They have a great selection of on trend up to date fabrics in the front and the back part is just as big and even more fun! Their remnants are $5/yard! Lots of them come in 3-4 yard lengths--where I found lots of mine! Also, they sell pillow remnants for $1. They have a 20% off sale twice a year that usually corresponds with the furniture market so it should be coming up soon!

Also, here in town, I did find a great place last week. Have you seen that curtain store off I-85 when you are driving towards/in Gastonia? They usually have a bed all decked out sitting outside. There are 3 stores together--one is Morris and Daughter fabrics. In the very back is a wonderful workroom and fabric shop. It's bare bones. Dress warm. They sell great remnants for $1.99 a bag. Most were 54" wide and over a yard long! Great deal!

Good Luck!

Hi Nester!
I love your ideas and all your photos!
I'm curious though, about one area of your home. Where do you homeschool? I'd love to hear s(and see) some of your ideas in that area. I'm always looking for ways to pretty it up. After the kids are in bed I can't stand looking at all the work to be done. I actually have most of the books and things in a cabinet which I staple gunned ( my next favorite tool after the glue gun) fabric into so I didn't have to see the disarray. Anyway, you know how curious homeschool moms are about each other's "school rooms"!
Thanks!
Jaymie

as much as I love the "mis" treatments..lol I keep focusing in on the plates on the wall. I just LOVE that look. Do you have any helpful hints on keeping them straight? A friend of mine said she used plate hangers but it was hard to keep them nice and straight and flush against the wall...any hints....my email

I am really inspired!
1. I can hot glue.
2. I can tack.
3. I can buy extra material!
I think I can, I think I can!
I need to mistreat some windows!

Love that "mistreatment"and you can customize the length so that you don't end up with a "high water" valance :)

Sounds like Charlotte has come a long way since I lived there in 1975!!

ok...im obsessed with your blog!! I had to come back and look at everything CLOSE UP :). I love it more...the plates are not even fancy...or at least they dont "look" fancy (very doable). I LOVE your nightstand with the suitcase on top and of course the window treatments EVEN I could do them!!! I am out my door now to go treasure hunting looking for fabric and plates! You NEED to blog daily...maybe twice a day for people like me :)

Holy Sha-moly.... I want to come back and take notes. I want to be a window mistreater! :-) But I'm not in love with my current bedding, so I should probably wait until I have something I love.

I have a question... I know your blog is about interior and this is more and exterior but I thought just maybe you might know. I would love to paint my front door RED. Right now its an aluminum white door. I wasnt sure 1. what steps I would need to take in order to do that...like if there was a certain primer or even several steps and 2. if the upkeep was a bear. Im not into a lot of upkeep. Again, heres my email....hey_traci@yahoo.com

Nester,
Have you ever mistreated sliding glass patio doors? I have hanging vertical blinds that are actually a huge eyesore (and my 2 y/o loves to pull on--sucessfully plucking a few down already). Just curious!

All these years of mistreating food, and I could have been applying that same philosophy to my windows! Thank you for inspiring me! Perhaps my assistants will be willing to help. They don't have thumbs, so they are surely perfect for the job...
