Dare me to move?

You know I had to add that song to my play list at the very bottom of this blog--especially after the Cooke sang it on Idol. And yes, Sister Honey Bunch, you are right, I saw him staring at you while he was singing.

our current nest
I wrote this post and told you a little of our background. Well we are trying to be completely gazelle {as Dave Ramesy would say} about high tailing it out of debt. This time last year we had $146,000 of debt yes, I did just hear that gasp. Most of that was business debt {failed business plus current franchise} car debt including a very specific vehicle needed for my the franchise, a little school debt, medical debt and a little consumer debt. In the past 12 months we have paid off over $42,000 of debt. That is totally God math because last year, my husband made less than twice that amount! My husband has been working his hiney off. We hate being in the prison where debt holds you captive and are always trying to tweak our expenses. Not to mention that my husband is in the car business and not many cars are selling right now. So what's a family to do?

No surprise here: we are moving. Here are the house stats for those of you who are just dying to know....

Current rental:

3000 square feet
22 minutes away from our church
4 bedrooms, living room, family room, breakfast area, office, dining room, small porch
right across the street from the neighborhood pool, field where my boys play and lake with walking path--hate to leave it!
right in the armpit of 2 loud well traveled interstates
2 story living room
2 story foyer
sitting area in master bedroom--where I do my crafty stuff and junk it all up

2 story bathroom
huge bathroom that I have a 5 x8 rug in that doesn't even touch any walls, separate potty room, tub and extra shower, double sinks, embarrassing large closet that hold both our dressers, some extra chandeliers {am I the only person in America with extra chandeliers?} and various junk.
zillions of windows
2 car garage
lots of closets
double staircase
balcony look over thing
yard totally taken car of by the owner
25 minutes from my parents--we have never lived so close to them in our entire married life--I am getting spoiled!
soon to be nest
New Rental:
2400 square feet
5 minutes from our church
5 bedrooms and a bonus, eat in kitchen, dining room, family room, big front porch
we'll have to join a local pool
small grassy lot at the end of the street to play football
2 story nothing {better the heating bills my dear} but it is a 2 story house just no vaulted or 20 foot ceilings
no foyer
small master bathroom
small master bedroom
smaller master closet but still a big walk in
13 windows and a sliding door
1 car garage
no ice in the fridge door
yard in need of love
45 minutes from my parents--the worst part about moving--I have the kind of parents that are actually fun to hang out with
$450 a month less than our current house

I'll tell you more about it soon. I have to say that I went into this decision kicking and screaming. I DID NOT want to move my children again! Can you believe that they are excited about this new place? Even though the house is smaller, it's still huge to me and I think the layout suits our family so much better. If you are renting right now you might want to check out the market. We could not find a house like this last year for this price! I guess since the housing market is down it has affected rentals too. So, I'm thinking that this will be a fun adventure not to mention all of the blog fodder that I'll get from moving!

Hey, is there some type of "move" that you are avoiding? Maybe not a literal move from a house but moving out of your comfort zone? Dare you to do it.

Oh my goodness--that house is beautiful! You won't have to think of blog topics for months...perhaps years :) I'm so impressed with your debt story, too.

Moving? Not literally, but I have been trying to live out of my comfort zone the past few years in several ways. God does amazing things in my life when I scooch out of those cozy places. But the kicking and screaming? I'm pretty loud sometimes :)

congrats on being gutsy - we are currently in the absoutely cheapest apt we could find in Dec when we got back from Norway - its helped us pay off our school debts 3 months sooner than expected, and now we can say we're debt free!! (even though we live in a 1 bedroom place so we sleep on a futon in the living room) Its given us lots of interesting people to get to know and I am quite content here. Yea for downsizing, and simplifying!

Valarie said...

Oh that house is way cute!!! I think its absolutely great that you have brought your debt down that much. God is good!! We are actually in his waiting room right now, waiting for a house to sell. Hopefully this market will go back up soon. :)

Just found your blog in the past week and love it. Love your music choices, too. We like the same things. I am biased toward Third Day, though. But only because my husband is in the band.

I actually like the look of your new rental more than your current house. The bungalow style is so cute. And I'm all for smaller houses. We're hoping to downsize in the next year, too.

Awesome! Way to take control of your life! We, too, have enormous debt from school--ha, we beat yours! Okay, that is nothing to brag about. But, we also made a hard move from our beautiful mountain home nestled above a rushing creek that filled my home with soothing noises to take advantage of a better job in a less desirable place to whittle away the debt. And, I know you--after the initial sadness subsides--will seize the new house with the zeal of a decorator with NEW MATERIAL! We all will look forward to watching you do your magic in the new digs. I love each and every home we have lived in--small apartments to big homes we have owned. I cry when we leave. But for ladies who like to get their hands dirty, moving just keeps us interested and creative in our homes. Okay, enough from me. Happy packing!

Renee said...

I am proud of you for being able to adapt so well and make every home that you live in so cozy and inviting for your family, and friends.

This new home for all of you has character and also the downsizing will only help financially for you. I can't believe 5 bedrooms wow that sometimes is hard to come by these days.

Many good thoughts are being sent your way!

Hugs~

So, I'm home today and scrolled down to listen to the song while I read your post. Love it, love it! I think this will be my song for '08.

I'm really so impressed with you guys. My sister (not Sassy) went through Dave Ramsey's program and paid down so much debt. You all rock.

And I'm really excited to see how you feather the new nest. Yea for you guys!

That is a lovely new home for you and your family. It will be wonderful to watch you decorate. You will make it a real home (With some Tobacco Road I hope!)

I'm so very impressed with the way you are tackling your debt and doing the Dave Ramsey program. You are doing a great job!

As a military wife who moves around alot (6 times in 13 years, and we're not done yet!), I get the heebie-jeebie's when I hear that someone has to move. Even just from one house to the other.

I don't mind moving, but it is so much work!

However, I am excited (and proud) for you. Getting out of debt is so tough, but how sweet it is to live within our means!

Also, selfishly, I am excited to see what magic you work on this new house!

I have to say that I really admire your wanting to get out of debt. The new house is so darling, just think, less to clean. My house is 1400 square feet, and I have to say, I love it. I can actually sorta keep on top of keeping it clean. I do love little houses though. Im with you on the parent thing. I love having my parents only 20 minutes away. They are the cool kind of parents too, that I love hanging out with. I'm excited to see some picutres of your nest, good luck with the move.

Yay for you! I am so impressed with you being willing to do whatever it takes to get out of debt. I am hoping to quit my job to be home full time, and want to follow Dave Ramseys program... would love to hear more about what you do to conserve or save. We don't excel at that so much. Ugh!
Can't wait to see the new place after you get to work on it- it is already adorable. Love it!

You should be very proud of your family - what an accomplishment your've made in becoming debt free!

And, I really like the new house. I can't wait to read all the blogs about your projects in this one!

I'm praying that you'll experience much joy and satisfaction in this home!

I think you are the only person I "know" that has moved as much as I have! In 13 years, we've moved 10 times (Military family) and expect to move again in about 2.5 years (loooong time in one place for us). Your new house looks cuuuuuute! When do you move?

Kelley said...

I am loving your new "little" (not really little at all) bungalow and know that you will make it BEEEE-UTIFUL! "Home" is so relative.

I am from the land of Dave Ramsey. He actually lives in my same town and his offices are a hop, skip and a jump from me. We have completed his course and actually facilitated a group at our church last year. As he says, "live like no one else now so that you can live like no one else later".

Best wishes to you in your new digs....I can hardly wait to see more pics.

Oh that new house is so cute! Just THINK of all the fun things you can put on the porch.

Have fun with the move!!!

I love your vulnerability! Thanks for putting yourself out there! We started Dave Ramsey a few years ago...had setbacks...got back on and we were debt free this past January. It took selling our larger 2 story home, moving into an apt. for 6 months, and found the perfect little bungalow that was in foreclosure. My husband is also in the car business...so I know slow. We have also moved a ridiculous amount of times. Kids are so much more resilient than us...my husband & kids could live in a tent in the backyard;0) PROPS to you and your family!

That is a beautiful bungalow!!

I've just discovered your blog and was so encouraged by this post. Way to go, you all are really knocking down that wall of debt! You really can do all things with God's help!

You have a precious site and I've really enjoyed your window mistreatments! We have a few windows that I need to work on and really have NO money to do what I see in my mind's eye...BUT...my family owns a furniture business and those upholstery tacks and extra fabric are always around the store...SO you've inspired me!!

I'll be asking my parents to bring some down the next time they come for a visit!!!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Wait, did you say a two story bathroom? Wow. But I love your new nest! It's beautiful!

Congratulations on such a drastic reduction in your debt! My mom has struggled with debt for all my life and just went through bankruptcy...so I am a bit paranoid about debt. Luckily, I married an accountant ;-)

Good luck as you move!

You have to call and share that story with Dave!! We just love him and are trying to be gazelle intesive also. Right now we're looking at selling our car and getting two very used ones and saving the car payment. Everything is such a harder decision when kids are involved. I'm so proud of you and your hubby! Congrats on making it happen. P.S. My husband is in sales too...I'm with ya there.

I am so happy for you. I know you're not excited about moving away from your parents. We are 12 hours from our family in LA. It would be nice if they were closer.

Like you we have rented from time to time. I, too, have decorated and made every rental house my own. Even the owners loved what I did to their houses!

I can't wait to see what you do to this one. It's adorable.

I'm proud of you! My husband and I are talking of downsizing, and it's a hard wrench to let go of a place you've made your own. But yeah, there's always the adventure of getting a clean slate --or nest if you will. Biggest relief to be out of debt. I bet a lot of people you know have tons more debt just because of the home they live in and don't count it. You guys are great gazelles!

karamy3sons said...

I love the new house. I think you guys are totally smart to downsize! You are making huge strides in getting out of debt. Praise God for your obedience! The new house will have your special touches and feel like home! If we were closer to you we would come over and help move (we have moved 11 times since we got married almost 15 years ago). It will be so worth it one day when you can say "WE ARE DEBT FREE" on Dave Ramseys show! My husband and I are doing the Dave Ramsey program, trying to pay-off 2 vehicles and eventually our home! Don't give up you are so close to the finish line!

Have a blessed weekend!

Love the new house - too cute. My husband just accepted a new position yesterday at my university. No, not the one I own, the one I attend. He is just about in tears today because he loves his job, but the new one is half the distance. With gas prices, well, you know what they're doing, something had to change. The new job has phenomenal benefits but it's still a little scary. Your gazelle intensity is inspiring!

I have just recently started to read you blog and I LOVE IT!! You are so inspiring. My husband and I had to move to Florida from Georgia, away from ALL of our family, for his job three years ago. Unfortunately, we moved to Florida right at the peak of the housing boom and was stuck buying a house that we just don't love. We are now upside down and stuck in it. Your site has given my the inspiration to make the house more "decorated" using your window mistreatments. We are also trying very hard to stick with the Dave Ramsey program and had fallen into a slump. But you have given me to spark to get our fire going again to pay off our dept. Thanks for such a great site.

It looks cute! I totally get the moving thing, but what an adventure (hehe). And think you'll get to declutter. Not that your current places pics look as though you need it!
We built our house 5 years ago. 2000 sqft. 1 husband and 4 girls (plus me of course). The mortgage WAS really good but because of taxes and ins. we are currently paying about 1/2 of another mortgage on them! Yikes! So we put it up for sale. Under market value, nothing yet...It's been 3 months. But we are are trusting the Lord for the right thing! If it does sell we could buy another home outright! Much older and smaller but debt free. BUT the big deal is we would like to leave the state (our equity would go much farther), if we buy here again we're still going to be paying between $400 to $600 for ins. and taxes a month!

Kimba said...

Well, I'm glad to see that you haven't completely lost your mind and are moving for a very good reason. Actually that's better than a very good reason. That's a great reason. I really admire your commitment to ridding yourselves of debt. We practice Dave Ramsey's philosophies around here too and I'm blown away by your progress!

Your new house is adorable. I love the front porch and I know you will make it your own in no time at all. What a blast!

And, you know, I never really thought about this particular benefit of homeschooling. You're totally free to move whenever and wherever you want. No worries about the school district. Veeeeeeeeery interesting. I'm tucking that away in my "Reasons to Homeschool" file.

BTW - You need to pop over and see the unbelievable loot I scored at a garage sale this morning.

That is a HUGE savings a month!! Wow!! We rent for $650 here in Ga. and that is cheap for a house. Heck, it would be cheap for anything, I think 1 br apartments go for more! We hope to buy a house soon and there are more and more foreclosures popping up, which is great for us and our lack of money. I do feel for the people losing their homes though...

Hi,
It looks like an excellent decision, until you are out of debt and can buy something that fits the budget.
Just think how much faster you will be able to finish off the rest!
We just bought a house that fits us well, and are working quickly towards being fully self sufficient.
We purchased our house through a program called rural development. 80% is a 1% interest, and 20% is at 5%.
Plus we recieved a $30,000 grant for down payment.
We are growing all our veges, plus we both hunt.
We also follow the Nourishing Traditions way of eating.

Wish I could give you a hug when the stress of packing strikes. If it stresses you- sounds like you may be a pro by now. How about some chocolate?

I love the new nest, it looks like some of the houses in our neighbourhood. I am sure it will be all feathered and loved soon!

My scary move- deciding if we should start "trying" for baby number three. My comfort zone is hectic right now anyway, but managable. Adding another gives me hives one day, and daydreams another.

Getting pregant is a challenge for us, so the whole process of charting my cycle, taking drugs, peeing on tests, and getting numerous negatives isn't all that appealing.

That and the lack of sleep that first YEAR!!

Way to go Nester! I understand what a big deal it is to make sacrifices for the sake of getting out of debt. DH and I have paid off all of our medical debt plus one credit car and 3 personal loans from family members. We only have one credit card, dh's student loan, and our mortgage left! DH tried for over a year to talk me into attending the DR:FPU and I kept dragging my feet, but now that we've done it, its easily in my top 10 list best things we've done for our marriage.

As for stepping out of my comfort zone or 'moving'... I am taking on a big new responsibility at work. I'm one of the few people in the world who proudly admits to happily not being a leader. Its not in my 'natural' talents, but I'm really looking forward to the challenges of this promotion, mostly because I see so much good that can be done if I work hard.

Looking forward to hearing all about how you feather your new nest!

Hello....a lurker here. I just added your blog to my links because I enjoy reading your stories. I did want to mention a common-ality we have....we too have been doing Dave Ramsey plan. Short version - hubby switched jobs which reduced his income by THREE-FOURTHS....had to move from a large home to a small home. Sold our two Tahoes and got two Subarus...WAY better on gas.....lived on an evelope budget for 2 years now and have paid off $40,000 of misc. debt (car, business, investments, etc). We are exactly $19,000 away from being totally debt free...except for our house. Oh yeah, our house. IT's small (1394 sq. ft.) but I've grown to LOVE it. No fuss, no huge clean up, it's sweet and simple and now my hubby & I swear if we ever do build a house, we are building small.....we like the extra time it gives us to "LIVE LIFE!" : ) Congrats....don't worry....trust that God gave you this new home for a reason!

I am so impressed with your diligence to get out of debt. If I had a big lovely home like that I don't know if I could even think about moving. I'm excited for you and believe it will be such a blessing as you take this step toward greater financial freedom.

I'm not moving to a new house- but oh how I long for the day that I can! However, I'm moving out of my comfort zone one week from today when I speak at the state homeschool convention not once, but twice in one day. What was I thinking??? Every time I do public speaking it is a huge act of faith and way out of my comfort zone!

Hi - I know your sis in GSO, but have never commented before. My hubby and I started our own business today (his 9 to 5 ended yesterday - company sold, etc.), so your post hits home. We have been living the "gazelle" lifestyle for about four years now, but that has been with a stable income and very little of the unexpected. Fortunately, the Lord is shipping peace this way in very large quantities. Even me with my very type A personality is excited about the next chapter (however my nerdy Quicken database is taking a beating right now!). Very fitting music - my hubby sings that song sometimes (and in my opinion rivals Cooke!). I'll have to remind him to keep singing!

Thought you might want to know that we have been in our house almost two years and your kitchen post inspired me to tackle mine (I had already removed the wallpaper but had stalled out). That was even before 2 people told I should read it!

major props for being a gazelle...doesn't it feel good? we've been running as fast as we can (holding on to one another's hands...oh, wait...that's for another time) for over a year now, making best friends with ebay and craigslist, living in a one-bedroom apartment with two kids, and working any odd job that pays:) i have actually found it quite refreshing to simplify and don't think i want to go back even when we're debt free. we are moving next month (to a new state) so i look forward to following your journey and picking up lots of great moving and decorating tips. love your blog...thanks for sharing your life and your nest!

I love that song by Switchfoot. We're going to see Prince Caspian tomorrow and my kiddo was more than thrilled to hear that they were on the sound track. He's only 8 but he loves them!

BTW, yet again you inspire me...get out of debt! To the world's standards we probably don't seem to have much, but it's still a millstone around our necks!

Ummm, first things first, I'm pretty sure David Cook was looking at me, not Sister Honey Bunch.

Okay, now then, my computer dies and I miss an exciting post like this. I've been envious of your beautious home for a long time and I'm sorry you have to go through the hassle of moving. But, I think the soon to be home is super cute! And 2400 is still fairly large. Good for you for being fiscally responsible and getting so much of your debt paid off! Very impressive. Hope this new adventure proves to be a good one for you!

Have a great weekend!

what type of franchise did you/do you currently own? not trying to pry, but we are considering buying a subway franchise and would appreciate some heads up if that is a BAD idea. thanks!

Good Luck with your move! I am proud of you for doing what needs to be done. I am definitely going to have to start working more.....after the summer is over :-). Gas prices have made everything more expensive while the retirement income stays stagnant.

((hugs)) Rosie

You're doing great!! Hang in there. I love this new house. It's adorable and only five minutes from church! That's awesome.

By the way, I LOVE the light "saver" battle going on over the catwalk. That's some good stuff. I have all girls, so my catwalk is Barbie city right now. I'm instructed not to touch it.

Trixi said...

Oh, Nester, that is a great house. I can't wait to see what all you do with it. It's a great adventure you are about to embark on.
Blessings,
Trixi
P.S. We too, are daring to move right now. It can be soooo scary. I just love that song.

You go, Girl! We did the same thing a few years ago -- moved from our house in the country and into town. ugh, I didn't want to go! But God blessed us beyond our imaginations, we paid off debts, and now we're back in a bigger, better country home.

You can do it!

P. S. Dave Ramsey rocks!

Oh gosh I know how renting is!! We rent now and are getting ready to move. We are excited about but we are living in a pure mess right now with boxes! God is so good in helping provide isnt He?! glad you were able to pay off some of the debt!!!

Debra said...

Do you have an email address you list? I would love to email you some specific questions about business debt. We are in Dave's FPU right now and considering some things. Sounds like you've been there.

Or you could email me at

Thanks,

I'm in 1200 sq feet with four kids 8 and under...but we are now completely debt free, except for the house.
Which reminds me...why are you renting rather than buying?

Both homes look fantastic. I bet they could give you a shack and you'd turn it into a palace in a month!

Your new house is adorable! And so much potential. We recently moved to a much smaller house and I'm very grateful we never fully furnished the old house! Now I enjoy finding space-saving furniture and ideas (just installed cabinets for my project stuff today.) It will be another great adventure for your family.

(Where did all these people come from?! Can you see my little monologue way down here?)

Um, I am way jealous of anyone with more than my 1,036 sq. ft. (I'm not exaggerating on the 36 feet. I think your current closet is the size of my bedroom. We have 1.63 feet on either side of our queen-sized bed. If we got a king, it would put a whole new meaning on the word "bed"-room.)

I'm so jealous of all you space.
And all those single-hung, gridded windows.
And the porch.
And any garage at all.
And the cuteness of it.
And that the yard doesn't look as sad as ours did.

I can not wait to see what you do to it. That poor house won't know what hit it. But it will be so happy after it's mistreatment.

By the way {Hello!}, how can you tell us you have a TWO-STORY bathroom and NOT show a PICTURE?! Scandal.

From visiting your blog I can tell that you could turn a small trailer into a show place. It just proves that it's not the house but the "home" you turn it into. The fact that your new house is very pretty doesn't hurt either. Besides new windows means new mistreatments. I can't wait to see what you do with the new place. Good luck to you and your family. Your honesty and candid words are just so refreshing. I am amazed at how you guys have taken "the bull by the horns", as they say in Mexico, and have taken every step you can to get out of debt. It takes a lot of discipline, courage and FAITH.
I am sure the Good Lord will see to it that your heart is content in your new place, and that you make it into your new home soon enough.
Many blessings!

I admire you for working so hard to lower your debt. I really enjoy your blog - you are an excellent writer! I grew up in your city, so I enjoy the reading about my home town. Of course now I am thinking....hmmm are they moving north in the direction of the lake, way out Rea Road, or closer to SC, etc? Good luck with your move. I will enjoy following your blog as you make your new home adorable!

When I saw you were moving I was praying it was right beside me, but that house didn't look famaliar. But now you have a whole new space to decorate and blog about. I finally took your advice and mistreated my windows. It might be a more traditional treatment and still needs something else, but its a start. Thanks for all your advice! I put up a post on my blog, tell me what you think!

I am new to your site and first time commenter. I totally relate to your post! My husband and I took the Dave Ramsey course last year and moved into the gazelle thinking and paid off DEBT!!!! My husband got a part time job and works all the time but it is nice to see the light at the end of the tunnel!! It feels great to get debt paid off. Congrats to you and your family for getting out of debt as well!

Thanks for putting that out there! I personally like the new place much better! You will make it yours like always...and kids are so flexible with stuff like this....It's us grown ups that think there are all kinds of issues about change....they and you will be fine!

Wow - paying off that much debt is some seriously hard work, but nothing is worse than lying in bed at night worrying about money. Good for you!! I am looking forward to your posts to see how you feather your new nest! Amazingly I'm sure!

oh cool! I am comment 100! Go me!

So where will I be sleeping in this cute house??? LOVE it! wish we could find a rental like that. I'd be all over it faster than you could say "anything's better than an apartment"...

I am answering your questions on my blog for monday's post!

My plane ticket is purchased too! **SQUEE!!!**

We moved to current city with me kicking and screaming, you couldn't get me back to where I was.

Glad rentals are more affordable in your area, they have gone up significantly in our area because there is a higher demand since people aren't able to buy anymore. . .I guess investors feel they have to live somewhere.

You are doing such a fabulous job with this blog! You are so inspiring. I "visit" often when I need ideas for "cheap" decorating ideas and when I need to be reminded what's important in life -- having fun living it! Keep up the good work!
Can't wait to see what you do with the new place...

I just might take you up on that dare!!

I think the new house sounds fab! And you will have so much to blog about with all of your amazing projects! Have you thought about (you know- in all of your spare time) writing a book about your fabu decor ideas? I would buy it for sure! Or even appraoching a magazine to do a monthly instalment? There are a lot of fun home decor mags out there- just an idea.

Can't wait to read more on your movie!

Congrats to you........for doing it! My husband are in the very midst of beginning our own "get out of debt" journey. Best wishes. I love your blog by the way and am so happy I found it. :)

Im happy to say we really aren't in a lot of debt. We owe 1 credit car 3K and thats it. We are working hard to pay it off before buying a "new to us" car. Then we will be paying that off, and shortly after that moving into our own home =) As of right now we are just working on finding an affordable, nice sized apartment =p

Lisa said...

Good move! We continue to downscale and love it. We have no mortgage and only 1 car note. Hang in there! It is wonderful and worth every sacrifice.

No option to buy? Wouldn't that save LOADS of money in the long run??

I am so excited for you! 10 rooms that we get to watch you transform. I am proud of you guys for getting out of debt.
We did 3 years ago and then my husband job transfered him to a crazy, expensive part of the country and we got back into debt just buying groceries at the end of the month. Good experience (I call it his MBA program) and God allowed us to leave the area and get another job.
We are trying to dig out of the debt again so I will be doing it right along with you.
