The No Holes Garland Holder-upper!

Don't want to make holes in your mantel for your garland?

Lysa emailed me yesterday all excited about the cure for hole-ly mantels. She found this new thing-a-majig called the Garland Grabber. It holds your garland on the mantel, fences, banister, granite {in case you want to garland up your kitchen}. This thing is gonna put nails out of business. Yes, I am so upset that I didn't think of it first. And no, it's not a 7 year old kid who stands at the mantel all season and holds up the garland. This is a no holes way to hang your garland.

They do only hold 5 pounds each so I would probably have to use 2 or 3 on each side of my mantle but OH MY GOODNESS! Not only that but, Lysa is giving some away on her blog, love her, so fly on over there and sign up to win.

Need a quick and inexpensive idea for your Thanksgiving centerpiece? Get you some tiny pumpkins and candles and do like Martha. Now that's a Martha project that even I can handle.

Loving this memo frame that Shannon from Bless Our Nest was inspired to make. I bet you could make one too with stuff you already have: an old empty frame, wire or twine or chicken wire and some type of clipping device {ring clips, clothes pins, ribbons, brads, safety pins}.

Wish I was having Thanksgiving at my house this year so I would have a reason to make this fast, easy and cheap {my three favorites} table cloth that Kimba made.

Manuela from The Pleasures of Homemaking made this sign that you could use year around.

Forgive me--I told you I'd do the fur wreath this week but it is taking me a long time to write--we'll do it on Monday! Get your fur {1/2 yard of long haired fur from a fabric store} and straw wreath form {half off at Hobby Lobby this week} ready!

How To Hang A Wreath

This big, beautiful, full and luxurious wreath on my front door was made by one of my favorite friends in real life, Betsy . When I got it home, I just knew that I couldn't use one of those run-of-the-mill metal wreath hangers for this work of berry and foliage art. Why not? Well, the first reason is because I always feel like the run-of-the-mill metal wreath hangers hang the wreath too high. The second reason is that I don't have a run-of-the-mill metal wreath hanger.

Have the same issue? Here's the solution.

Find the fattest ribbon that you have {this one's from Valentine's Day} and loop it around the wreath. A wide ribbon adds instant elegance to any wreath.

Then, hold the wreath up to your door at the height you want it. Have your son who turns eleven today, hold the wreath up for you while you climb up on a chair and nail a couple upholstery tacks in the top of the door through the ribbon. They are flat enough to still allow the door to close. If you have a metal door, you can use a couple of short screws with a flat head.

That's it! Your wreath is now hung beautifully on a stunning non-run-of-the-mill wide ribbon.

If you want a voluptuous wreath like this. You can make one by adding to a wreath you already have {shop the house, scavenge the outdoors} or you can see if Betsy has any left at her etsy shop. We bartered for this one. I paid her a wreath's worth of tassels and we each left feeling like we got the better end of the deal.

Garland: The Rest of the Story

I need to keep it real with y'all. Look what happened 10 minutes after I took the last photo of my garland the other night.

Apparently, that 30 pound garland combined with the weight of the shutter was too much for this little shelf to bear. Actually, the hardware was still in the wall--it came unattached from the shelf itself. I was in major despair. I knew I could fix the garland easily but, I wanted to sit and enjoy my new garland and this shelf/mantel issue was gonna take a man to fix.

He was happy to oblige and got to get out his man tools and cut wood and stuff. He made something called a blind shelf and honestly, I don't care if that shelf can see or not, I just wanted my mantel and garland back.

So he got it all hooked up {with major holes in the wall that we will have to fill when we move but that's the price I'm willing to pay for beauty}. Then, something ELSE happened to my garland!!!! I turned on the fireplace and smelled that smell that you smell when you turn your furnace on for the first time in the winter. Dust burning. My pretty, huge unabashed wild and crazy, let loose garland that I bragged to you all about was hanging too low.

Too close to the fire.

I have made this garland in 6 different houses over 6 different fireplaces and this is the first time that I've had this problem! Again, I was sick over it. So, I decided to raise that swag part in the middle up even with the rest of the garland. You know what, I like it like that!!!

Sometimes the best solutions come in the midst of a ginormous garland crisis.

I couldn't believe that no one asked about the garland getting hot in the comments. But, I figure anyone that puts actual safety before beauty stopped reading this blog long ago. I just love you all!

And lots of you were overly concerned about cords. PEOPLE--you cannot let that hold you back. I put a few ideas in the comments of the garland post that have to do with a combination of hot glue and extension cords. Remember for a low melt glue gun, you can peel the hot glue off of almost everything!

Since I love and adore you and trust you with showing my junkin it all up side of the tv abyss--here's my cords. I have that TV hole and there's an outlet in there. If you don't have an outlet up there, I have a feeling you have one close. I would just use a white extension cord and bury the ugly plug parts where the lights meet it into the back of this garland.

I was so glad to get my garland back up and it was just in time for my friend in real life, Bonita to come visit. See that furry wreath down there? We'll be making that next week!

And also my sister.

And, then I got to see a fellow imperfectionist once again too! Why didn't we take a photo?
How's your garland coming along?

The Most Wonderful Christmas Garland Ever and How to Make It

Ok, it's finally here. I took my garland apart just so I could show you step by step how to think about making a fluffy, luxurious garland this year. I'd like to complain about it but, I secretly had a great time! I had over 30 photos and tried to whittle them down to a somewhat manageable post. I just know you all are gonna make the prettiest garlands EVER!

Do you have this perfectly acceptable but somewhat thin and boring garland?

Do you want this perfectly obnoxious yet wonderfully captivating, so full glory and layers and dimension garland so much that you almost cannot stand it? Don't have a fireplace? No worries, you can use this method for over your cabinets in the kitchen, down the center of your dining room table, hanging over a big mirror or entry way, up a stair case or on a sideboard.

First, gather up all the skinny garland that you can find

And then get you any other garland that you may have. I have this pretty garland that's got pine cones and leafy stuff attached in it. You don't have to have this but I think it helps. You almost cannot have too much garland for this project.

Search your house for any other stuff that you can use in your garland. There are NO RULES!!!! Maybe you have really pretty twigs in your back yard or non poisonous berries. Maybe you have boys that collect trains--you could add in toy trains or a collection of small gold frames. I like feathers...

And this stuff....

I've got a ton of this. Just greenery that I have collected over the years--it's the same stuff that you've seen in my wreaths and centerpieces. I'm just not afraid to take things apart and use them in other projects. When I see good greens {I'm a P.O.O.P.I.E.} on sale, I grab some--sometimes yard sales even have stuff like this. I try to get greens that look realistic--remember the tip; real stuff has some yellow, brown, gold tones to it so don't shy away from those colors.

I like these too. I know, they aren't Christmasy but that's the trick. I want it to look somewhat alive and not all bright berries and sugared fruits. But, if you love bright berries and sugared fruits--they could look really great!

The main trick to this entire process is attaching your garland together. I start with two strands and make sure they are long enough to stretch more than the length of the fireplace. If your garland is short then just over lap the middles and attach them together leaving the ends skinnier. Does that make sense? So just start twisting those finger strands together every few inches until your two garlands become one. It doesn't take very long and it makes a stronger bond than what you might think.

If you are attaching this to a mantle, you need you some nails, screws or upholstery tacks. I've been doing this for years and I've used all three. My favorite is the tacks because I just leave them up there all year an no one notices. Grab one or two secure strands of garland and just wind it around the nail and twist it onto another strand. This attaches the garland to the fireplace. Do that on both sides. This year I used two tacks on each side just to make it extra strong.

You should now have something like this. I don't let mine droop too far at this point. It's gonna get heavy and fall just right in the middle as you add more junk in. But, this is your base garland for everything else.

Next, I added in that fro fro piece of garland with the pine cones attached. Wow! What a huge transformation already! It was only long enough to sit right in the middle but we can fix that later.

The way I do it is grab the center of the garland that I want to add into the base and hold it up to the center of the base garland and then start twisting the strands of garland together to secure them working my way out.

It still looked a little weak and I like my garland super hefty so I added a few more skinny garlands in to fill it all up. I think this is 3 or 4 skinny garlands, 1 pineconey garland and one fat garland that I got at a yard sale. Since I have enough garland to decorate the Biltmore Estate this adding of a zillion garlands was not a problem for me.

Nester Says

Try using more of your garland all in one place to create that "wow" effect instead of spreading it thin all over the house.

Now that you've got the entire garland base done, the fun part begins! Go ahead now and get you a strand or two on lights and wrap in there. Once the lights are on, you've got your basic garland done and this is the part you store and use year after year.

Here we go-- I begin tucking in pieces of fern starting at the corners. No, I don't glue it or wire it. If you have a really big real log fireplace and you worry that your fern parts will fall out you can dab them with a little hot glue. I glued mine in once but regretted it when I wanted to change it up. I'm all about the options and although I have had a piece of fern fall out on occasion, it's never fallen into the fireplace. Decorating is so risky.

Perty.

Keep adding all your favorite junk in...

See how it's coming together? I like to load it down. Just keep adding stuff. Thre's no right or wrong. As long as you like how it looks. I focus on the two corners and then the middle and fill in from there.

Starfish are nice.

Magnolia.

Stop the world, I see an empty spot with just naked garland showing. Oh the humanity.

Much better.

I always have to add in a nest. I look forward to all of your emails telling me that I'm only allowed to use nests in the spring.

Allrighty! I'm all done! You could stretch your garland all the way to the floor. This is the first year I've had blank wall behind the sides of my garland and it looks a little funny and out of proportion in the photo because I stood on the sofa to take it but in real life it's fine. I cannot bear to take any more photos right now. Also, my tree will go right there on the left in about a week or so and that will help balance it.

Remember, these are just guidelines. I want you to find stuff that you already have and use it. Try something out and play around with it. If you don't like it, take it out. YOU get to decide if it looks good or not. I purchased nothing this year for this garland. I've been doing this for 10 years now and decorating my garland is my favorite part of decking my halls. After Christmas I take out all of the loose parts {starfish and fern things} and then just slide a clothes hanger on each end of the garland and hang it in the attic or garage. If the lights burn out, I just cut them out of the garland and tuck new ones in.

Questions? If I see a recurring question in the comments I'll answer it there! PS, I am too lazy to proof read this so forgive me.

A Renter's Mantel

A Renter's Mantel

Our little rental is completely builder grade. That means there was no money or thought put into extra things like hardware, lighting or God forbid, a simple mantel.

I appreciate the hole over the fireplace for the TV. It's a great space saver in a house with a tiny living/family room. But this was a major eyesore. I solved the hideousness of the naked television with shutters but now, as Christmas approaches my desire for a mantel was becoming overbearing.
I started looking for something mantel-ly and my guidelines were as follows:

*it must be inexpensive
{I spent a total of $40}
*it must be something I would use again
{I can use these in any room of my house if we ever move}
*it must be easy
{my husband wanted to build a mantle--love him, but that's not easy}
*it must be temporary
{you know, because we are renting}

And one of you smart readers actually left me a comment months ago suggesting a shelf from Hobby Lobby. Thank you! That's exactly what I did.

There's a little gap between the two shelves--these were the longest shelves that Hobby Lobby carried. My man got that gleam in his eyes and assured me that he could trim off that top part on each side and butt both shelves up together. But, this would break my rule of wanting to be able to use them again when we move so I just stuck some black paper behind them to make the gap less obvious. Yes, I graduated from the Sanford and Son Skool of Design.

What an improvement for such a small cost. Now, I'm all ready for our next post: the long awaited wild and crazy Christmas garland!

The Rules

Watch out, I'm deep in thought.
Do you try to decorate by following RULES? I found this great little diagram and definitions here. I really didn't read the too much into it but thought it was a good way to think about decorating.

  • Bureaucratic: You feel that rules are necessary to get things done. You want a rule for every situation - documented of course. You are uncomfortable when there are no rules. You are shocked when someone breaks the rules, and do not agree with their justification, whatever it is. You are the rule maker.
  • Chaotic: You feel that rules are unnecessary or worse are obstacles to getting the job done. You are uncomfortable with lots of rules. You tend to ignore the rules. You think the rules do not apply to you or your situation. You are the rule breaker.
  • Pragmatic: You feel rules are important, but should not be followed blindly when doing so would interfere with getting the job done. You are more likely to follow the spirit of a rule rather than follow it to the letter. You prefer guidelines to rules.
When it comes to making your house a home in the midst of life, how much do you care about The Rules? What's the worst that would happen if you decided to be a bit more Chaotic when it comes to following the decorating rules?

Ragamuffin Memo Garland: You Can Make One!

This is a repost of the now infamous Ragamuffin Memo Garland that I first posted back in April on this blog and then published over at Blissfully Domestic in May. I love the word "ragamuffin" and got to use it in the name of my previous business. I missed that word and thought it so appropriately described this garland and so did so many of you! The ragamuffin fever spread really fast and it was so fun to see what all of you made.

Want to make one? They are so simple all you need is fabric, ribbon, ring clips and time--lots and lots of time.

Here's the finished product it is fat and fluffy and adorable. You can always click on any of the pictures to enlarge them, don't forget about that.

I make my garland with long strips of ribbon, fabric, fringe and anything else I can get my hands on. You know I never measure but here is a close up of a few strips so you get the idea of how long. I would err on cutting your fabric too long. That is if you had to err.

You want to have one base ribbon that is the one you tie everything else to. I used a long pink one here and I usually make it about as long as my arm. You can make them as long or short as you want.

And you tie the strips on. And you tie the strips on. And you tie them on. Am I not supposed to end a sentence with "on"? I think not. But you keep doing it until you want to curse me and anyone who you are making this for and then you look at it and you are almost half way done. And you keep doing it. Your kids can help too. You cannot tie wrong.

For my boy's garland, I used some old shirts from my husband's teaching days. Look, there's a cuff. I also cut up some sweet little jeans they all wore and a blanket and even one of their little shirts. I even had extra fabric left over from a window mistreatment that I threw in there.

It's like making a big soup. You just keep adding all sorts of stuff until it magically looks right. You are thinking that I don't really make soup and you are right.

As you are tying and tying and cutting more stuff because you didn't dream it would take so much fabric, just remember how adorable this is gonna look. You really want to pack the fabric and ribbon in. That's how it looks so fab. Do not skimp on this, you will just be wasting your time.

Once you get to the very end, you tie the ribbon that is the base onto the ring of a ring clip. Do the same for the other end. I actually do this first so I can see where my start and stop are easily.

I like to add clips or clothespins in every 6 or 8 inches so you can hang stuff in the garland. You can hang photos or baby shoes or grocery lists or Christmas cards or ticket stubs...

Look how cute this one is in my old kitchen. And yes, those are napkins used for window mistreatments. I'm so glad you noticed!

I hope you have fun with this project! It's like a quilt only easier and you don't have to sew and you can't cover up with it. If you don't want to make your own I'll have some listed at my etsy shop within the week.

This garland would be adorable hung over a changing table, window or bed. Make a Chirstmasy one and hang your cards on it. Use your babies old clothes and hang it in the playroom. What ideas do you have for these garlands?

This is the perfect time of year to make a garland for someone. Need more inspiration? Google Ragamuffin Garland and get inspired by what others have made as well!

Pssssstt! Gather 'Round. I've got a secret!:updated

Shhhhhh!

Hi everyone. It's Darcy. I've hijacked the Nester's blog. She forgot to boot me out after the pretty remodel. And if she doesn't regret it already, she soon will!

I took over Nester-girl's blog so I can share with you all that -

It's The Nester's Birthday!

So... shhhhhh! Don't tell her I was here. But don't forget to wish our girl a happy birthday.

Love ya' Nester girl. Don't hate me. But ummm... I won't be surprised if you boot me to the curb after this. ;)

OH MY CRAZIENESS!!!!!

Nester here...

What a fun surprise this was! Darcy, your check will be in the mail. How fun is it to get so much attention from you all! Me, Me, ME! A post and comments all about me and my big birthday self! It's Sunday morning and I just now saw this.

Yesterday was probably the best birthday of my life... I got to spend it with my mom and my sister which always sure to mean lots of laffs. Add to that about 100 of the most wonderful and some of the most creative women around not to mention I was surrounded by tassels, delish food and Christmas music! Perfection!

Seeing all of you who came was SOOOOO FUN! I even got a few gifts--a monogrammed apron from Kristi {what a great gift!}, the most delish cookies from the Dough Nut: Moms UNITE!{ginger and chocolate chip--she ships them!} a hand made wall plaque from The Real Tina {I'll have to get her to show us how to make these}. I also came home with the the biggest wreath I've ever had in my life. I'll tell you about the wreath on Wednesday.

It was such an honor to spend the day with such amazing women! I feel such a connection with so many of you readers who comment and even email and who's blogs I read. What is really neat is to sit and chat with you for a few minutes. I feel like we are long time friends.

Emily took a zillion photos so I'd bet she'll be posting something soon. I started to list everyone I met and try to link but I just realized it would take me at least an hour. Time better spent eating truffles and cookies and watching my boys wrestle.

I also have to tell you that when I got home last night my husband was baking No, not banking--BAKING! He's is such the Man! And I am so blessed to be married to a man who not only lets me be myself but encourages it. He is so glad that I have met you all, been able to share my life's work: the Gospel of hot gluing and make real friends here. I love you all and and enjoyed reading all of your comments! I'm pulling out the Christmas Decor this week! YIPPIE!

It just keeps getting better and better!

That Messy Creative Woman

I've got my first real show of the season coming up this weekend. It's in Greensboro, North Carolina and if you are close by, I'd love to meet you! I already know a few of you are coming and I cannot wait! Read more about Those Creative Women and the wares that will be sold and let me know if you are coming!

Here's what I've been up to. My etsy shop will be closed until Monday just so I can stay somewhat sane.

My entire craft room is in chaos.

I am very messy. It's the only way I can create. I need to be surrounded by all of the possibilities.

It's not too bad. There's a very wide path.

No Books Were Harmed in the Making of this Post

There are some pictures in some books that just scream childhood.

We love the illustrations in these books so much that I have looked for a second copy of them just so that I can rip out the pages and frame them.

Until the day when Epson sent me a free Artisan 800 All-in-One printer. And I have to go ahead and start the apology for not yet using this printer to its fullest potential.

This printer is fancy. It's got a touch screen and can print on CDs or DVDs and makes great photo copies. And I can print from my laptop without haveing to carry it in there to the printer. Lazy girl's dream!

This printer is the one that computer nerds fight over. They would be so mad at me if they knew I had one and used it to make copies of illustrations from books.

So, back to our story, I went and made copies of some of the pages in my favorite childrens' books and framed them. They turned out great and added a touch of whimsy to the space.

And I'm already in love with this printer with all it's bells that I have yet to ring and whistles I have yet to blow. It's like getting a free Porche and only wanting to use the cup holder.

I have prettied up my boys secret reading room with only some glassless yard sale frames, books they love and a fancy Epson printer. I'd rather have that than a Porche anyway.

Special thanks to The One2One Network and Epson for making Blissdom 08' possible and giving me a fancy smancy printer that I don't deserve but love. And special thanks to you for reading this commercial. Now, go make copies and frame away!

Giveaway Day!

An Assignment

Fair warning.

Want to make a super lush, thick, wonderful Christmas garland for your mantel, above the kitchen cabinets or to place on your buffet? Well, you need to make sure that you have enough greenery.

Over the next two weeks check and see how much garland you have. If all you have is the super scrawny anorexic garland that you can see through and you are hoping to have a full, wonderful garland this year-- you either need to have lots of the skinny stuff or supplement your collection.

Try hanging out at your local thrift shop. This is the time of year when people pull out the decorations and purge. If you are in need of some greenery, second hand is the way to go! Most of what I have is from yard sales. We'll be making that stunning jungle like garland from my mantle in just a few weeks! Get ready!

New and Improved!

Y'all.

Welcome to my new internest.

I am almost too tired to even write this post what with all of the bossing around I've done these past few...months. Darcy started this process for me ages ago and I kept putting her off because I knew how demanding I would be and I wanted to give this design my utmost attention. She could have had all this up and running in about 48 hours if I would have allowed it.

While Darcy was working like a dog following my commands, I would just come on over to the new layout and let out a deep breath. I am so much more relaxed here. The colors are soothing. There's not as much going on and the photos just pop. I hope you enjoy it as well.

Thank you Darcy for putting up with me!

You are the best Graphically Designing Woman on the planet. If anyone out there is in the market for a blog redesign, Darcy is your woman. At times I thought she could read my mind. She knows how to make things look professional, personal and perfectly beautiful!

Make yourself at home...

Why don't you hang around for a few minutes and get comfortable? I'm hoping this layout is much more user friendly. See those photos on the sidebar? They are links to the topics! Look up there at the very top of the page--I'm so organized now! If you are new here, or just want to catch up on some new reads, why not visit The Best of the Nest {up there in that fancy "nav" bar as they say in the business}. I've still got some tweaking to do so bear with me but, I'll be finishing up some of the pages in the next week or so.

Ok, so what do you think? What am I missing?
