10 Minutes to a Room You Love: A Series

For the next 4 Mondays I'm going to attempt to do a series exploring simple things that you can do right now to make a room better in both form and function. We'll be covering:

{now it's later and I came back here and made all those blue words above into links so you can read what we did with each room. later, gotta get back to the future now}

The information is not gonna be earth shattering. However, knowing the information isn't usually the hard part. Implementing the information is where I usually have the problem. I'm hoping to keep it easy enough that you can make any changes quickly but also useful enough that you will see a difference in each room with just a few quick adjustments.

Do you have one quick fix that you make sure to use in a certain room?

Oooh, I'm looking forward to them, too! By the way, I'm headed to Nashville, too! My best friend, Kat, and I aren't going to the conference (she doesn't blog anymore so it wouldn't apply to her anyway), but we wanted a girl's weekend away to get to meet you and all our favorite bloggers! I can't wait!

Amber said...

Sounds great! Looking forward to it.

Nester, I'd pretty much follow you anywhere, well, maybe not ANYWHERE. Can't wait to see what earth shattering goodness you have up your sleeve for us this time!

Hi there!

I too will be anxious to read your new tips for home decorating!

Also, you were my first "Etsy" order, and I wasn't sure how to let you know that my tassel arrived safely and in good condition, so I thought I would just let you know via the blog! I displayed the tassel in our office as it is an outdoor theme, and the tassel looks terrific!

Thanks so much!

I am super excited to read them all...and hopefully to implement them into my home!

I literally CANNOT wait. I need some help I think. My biggest problem right now is our "extra" room, which is our office/crafting/throw-it-all room. It gets to the "don't even open the door" stage and it's really very awfully bad. In it's normal, "c'mon in" stage, it's bad enough.

I can't wait to see your advice! I could use it right now in the paint department...

Oh my beloved Nester! In all the holiday brou-ha-ha, I felt like I had lost you. Not that I didn't enjoy your holiday decor (because I totally did), but I longed for the days of non-holiday related posts. I'm so excited I could just burst. Cause I'm a dork like that. ;) I can't wait to see what swet decorator-y goodness you're going to come up with.

Today, I posted about a lampshade I redid! A simple covering of the shade using a "placemat" made my desk area in the kitchen "cuter"! It's just a lampshade but it makes me feel like I had a "redo" and I spent Nothing! Yeah!

I would love to hear your thoughts on what to do with the kids' playroom (or other people might have a bonus room). My kids are into their Wii, so we have the full band of instruments for Guitar Hero, the Wii Fit board, etc. down there. And then there's the keyboard, the lizard cage, and the hodgepodge of unmatched furniture. Any suggestions?

Living with Lindsay said...

Hooray! I'm so excited for this series, Nester.

One of my little tips is rearranging furniture. I just did that in my bedroom and I feel like it's a whole new room. I love it.

Katie said...

Fun idea for a series! I'd have to say for me, I use lamps in every room. I prefer the lighting (or should I say "ambiance" haha!) you get from lamps and candles as opposed to most overhead lighting. It just makes rooms (...and me...) look better! ;o) I also like a flow of similar colors in the main living areas, not the same just complimentary, I guess, or at least one frequently used color in common. Can't wait to see the rest in this series!

What a fun way to start the week. I can't wait for you to share them with us.

My best little trick to is put a tea light in vintage milk glass...the pretty glow is so nice in small (and otherwise dark) places. Instant warmth. Looking forward to your series!

I can't wait! My favorite thing to do is use a touch of black in each room. I think it grounds a room. Maybe it's just a picture frame or a decorative box or something.

Sharon said...

I'm looking forward to this, especially the familyroom/kitchen...we don't have a lot of money for fix-ups, so this sounds awesome!

I can't wait! My only suggestion (that I have a habit of NOT following) is to clear out the clutter.

Screaming Meme said...

Now Im excited about Monday mornings! Thank you, sweet nester!

Looking forward to this...I like to incorporate different textures in a room and my ultimate goal for any room it to give it a layered effect, like it has evolved over time (even if it was put together in only 30 minutes!) I am with Katie on the lamps...softer lighting makes everything look better!

Dana and Daisy said...

This is more of an upkeep suggestion... when things get out of place, I gather up all the things that go together in one room and put them away, then go from that room to the next. In very short order the clutter is cleared.

Sarah said...

Please, the dining room too!

ursula said...

I like a touch of red in every room........oh, and also a tassel in every room, of course!!!

Kimm said...

OH!!! I am so excited for this series! I'm with Bonnie, I like to use touches of black in each room. I also like to keep things fairly simple (as simple as a family with 4 kiddos can manage) so that the look isn't too busy.

A touch of toile in every room? Does that count for a quick fix?

I rearrange the furniture a little TOO often. That's my quick fix. Cozy for winter, Open for summer, etc.

Looks like a fun series!

sounds like some great Monday inspiration - can't wait! we've definitely got several areas that could use a tune up!

A friend of mine has framed her grandchild's work in a black, wide border, acrylic frame and hung it above her stove top. It is an abstract drawing and the frame makes it look expensive. She is an interior designer and her home is gorgeous but it is what everybody comments on. I suggest you buy the right size frame and paper and the paint colors that will enhance the design of the room where you want to hang the art and go find a child you love to paint your masterpiece. It might take more than 10 minutes though!

Jesse and Laura Pounders said...

Decorative baskets for organizing always make it look more tidy but this keeps the things you use in the room you want them.

Lalena said...

Ooooo! Yea!
I try to add a touch of red in each room as a final touch.

Can't wait to read this series, it sounds fantastic! :)

I can't wait! I just like to make a room comfortable and inviting. I don't want any room in my home to look off limits -so to speak. So if someone visits I want them to feel they can make themselves at home. I want it to be beautiful, but "lived in".

Sarah Schneider said...

Can't wait! You have fabulous ideas! I use candles often for the excellent glow they have in the room. Another tip that isn't so much decorating, but we have dimmer switches in our kitchen and bathrooms, making relaxing baths available with soft lighting and softer lighting for dinner as well.

I'm really looking forward to this series! Thanks, Nester! Will there be any Mr. Linky's so we can share if we do the idea that you suggest? Just wondering. Could be fun. I've never done one though so I don't know how much time they take to implement.

I'm inspired right now too to see what I can do around my house in the last 17 minutes of my lunch break instead of just continuing to sit at my computer. Thanks! Kelly

I think having picture frames that are the same color in a grouping(don't have to be the exact frame, but at least coordinating) helps a lot. My mom has a wall of "stuff" in her family room, and the frames are all mish-mashy--wood, gold, etc. I think it ties everything in, but what do I know?! That's why I read your blog. ;)

I am looking forward to your SERIES! To answer your question - the one quick fix I make in rooms is using trays. I use trays on my coffee table to hold magazines, a vase or bowl. I also use them on the bathroom sink to organize lotion, a pretty small to hold jewelry, and lastly I also have a tray on my nightstand used as a "catch all". I think using a decorative tray, wicker, wooden, painted etc.. is a great way to easily make tablescapes look more pulled together. There is my 2 cents for whatever it is worth!

Kim@ForeverWherever said...

This sounds great! I know keeping clutter down is a big thing for me! We have so many magazines and books! The rooms look more inviting with it all stashed away in cabinets!

I can't wait to hear your tips!

Yippee for Mondays! One thing I find helpful to get a room I love is to vacuum. It doesn't take long at all and those fresh vacuum marks make me feel like the whole house is clean!

Very cool nester!

Tip #1 - hamper storage

Look out for a lovely large wicker or ? hamper that suits your decor. I've used mine to hide the biggest bag of dog food ever, and now it houses a big bag of flour AND sugar. Easy, functional and beautiful too!

Tip #2 - quick bin stash

In my son's room, toys keep trickling in where they don't belong, cluttering his desktop. So I pushed an empty bin under his desk. If I get tired of the riff raff, I shove it into the bin for sorting at a later time. The bin is easy to carry around to the right rooms as well.

I also use the bin idea underneath our coffee table. Instant clean tabletop! As I decorate rustic, I use old wooden crates with felt sliders on the bottom to protect the hardwood floors. You'd never know there was just junk in those lovely old boxes!

My quick fix tip: BASKETS.

They are organic, textural sculptures that create such visual calmness through their ability to hide clutter in a pretty way.

I'll be looking forward to your ideas about family rooms. I have a family room in dire need of some new ideas.

In my rec room/craft room, my quick fix usually involves weaved baskets and painted buckets. They just about hide all the not-so-attractive clutter.

The Scooper said...

I don't know if this is a "quick" fix. It's quick-ish. Mistreatments!

Before I "met" you, I would have never guessed any form of window treatment could be quick.

But now I am a mistreating fool. For $20, I just mistreated my great room which was 5 whole windows. And I did it in part of a day. No sewing. No stress. All for $20.

For 3 years I stressed over those windows. This was the quickest and most dramatic "fix" I've made in a room.

(And of course, I blogged about it.)

One thing that came to mind is pillows. Whether on a bed, chair or sofa, big comfy and cute pillows can really make a house look cozy. I'm anxiously awaiting your series.

geekdetails said...

My quick fix is to clean it thoroughly. I also rearrange everything often. All my furniture works well with everything in the house so I can change the look of a room without buying more stuff.

I am so looking forward to checking in on a regular basis to get some fresh new inspiration! My favorite little tip that makes me happy each and every time is a fresh coat of paint in a happy color and/or fresh trim & door paint. There's something about fresh paint that fixes the ugliest of rooms!
