The Home Book has a great tutorial on tablescapes, taking cues from designer David Jimenez. This one isn't technically on a table but remember, no rules. And no money--just use anything you have on hand.

This is the tablescape featured in the book. It's quite intentional. Sometimes I forget that there are actual reasons why stuff looks good with certain other stuff. Here's what the book says:

Love the idea of leaning a frame on the wall. I didn't have a group of frames but had one large one that seems to work fine. I totally agree with the black and white concept. And for the tray, I added a stack of white oval serving dishes.
Suggestions from designer and Home Book contributor, David Jimenez

1. Sphere: mixing shapes is a designer trick and it's nice to add some sparkle--I used a ginormous Christmas ball.
2. Colored boxes: don't have 'em on hand but, I faked it with nicely colored books.
3. Tall Vase: have one, loved it up there but I needed a lamp in that corner. I'd like to add in a small potted plant but I'm using what I have on hand.
4. Framed Print: you could even stack some empty frames painted in the same color. Try hanging one or two and leaning another.

This method could be used on an sofa table in the foyer, on your dresser in your room, in the kitchen {that's where it is in my home} living room, bathroom anywhere. The Home Book is available in the Get Your Nest On Shop {for as little as $20--half off the cover price!}but if you can find it for less dough somewhere else, then get it there!

This has been really helpful for me. I am always trying to find items in my home to change out my tablescapes. Thanks so much for doing this series! I love it!!! :-)
Great advice, I need to get that book! Looking forward to Thursday!
NOw I have to do the 10 minutes thing just to use that stinkin cute button! Genius.
I love how you took what the book said and then showed us how you Nesterized it. Perfect.
Nester, your post are great! I get lots of inspiration from them. Thank you! Sincerely, Vanessa
That was so helpful! I want to be like you when I grow up! :-)
You're new button looks great!

Oh, I love that book. I'm working my way through it verrryy slowly, so I haven't made it to the tablescapes yet. They're pretty! =)
First stop today - Half Price Books to see if they have a copy of the book...I might wither away and die if I don't have it TODAY.
Second stop - Tuesday morning so I can find some stuff to turn my kitchen into the beauty I want it to be, like you talked about yesterday. :)
Great tips, and I like the way you customized (or as your sis said Nesterized) it to use what you had. And I"m with Emily......gotta participate just to use that adorable button!!!
Suzanne
I really needed this post. Thanks for all the great tips!
That's awesome. I sometimes get stuck on little decorating things like that. I may have to get that book!
P.S. I just took my kitchen "before" pictures. I'm totally on board for Linky Thursday...or whatever we're calling it.
The "Home" book is one of my favorites...love how you used the picture as inspiration but made the tablescape your own. It is so easy to over think these things, you make it look so easy!
Every time I dust this house, something gets "tablescaped" all over again. I am addicted to changing accessories. Some are even stored in the basement for a rainy day. You never know what might get moved around here~

Love your blog and the creative inspiration.
Thanks for sharing with us and I look forward to Thursday entries.

I was finally able to purchase a console table a few months ago. I love changing the look on the table.
Thanks for providing some terrific ideas.
Great suggestions. Just moving things around can give you a lift. I have always read that using the triangle in a vignette is more interesting. If you look at the arrangements posted, you can see the triangle, keeps the eye moving.
Great Blog!
Very helpful- and beautiful at the same time- Love your approach to decorating.
Happy Day
Cool Beans. LOve that approach!
Great ideas Nester and I love the simplicity of the formula. It is so user friendly, just like your blog! Can't wait to incorporate these tips! As always, thanks for sharing your designer mojo! LOVE IT!!! :-)
NOW I know what a tablescape is. Seriously had no idea. And the button is so adorable.
I just reserved this book at the library. Can't to look at the ideas.
Great... So glad there is a design principle that makes my lazy no hanging habit okay. I'll tweet that to everyone who visits my house now.
I have a pathetic looking entry table. It actually looks like everything escaped- there's only 1 lamp. Somehow the kiddos have decided that this table is the touching table and I don't dare feature touch a feel books and a pile of Lego's in my entry. I need to glue my tablescape to the table.
Love the arrangement. Go ahead and make that dresser your monthly feature along with the table in your "keeping room." I love it!
Great post Nester friend!
Pretty Organizer
Gorgeous! You would be so proud of this recovering perfectionist. I spent all day yesterday "shopping my house." I can't wait to show you my makeover!!!!

The white dresser makes the dinning area look so pretty and inviting! Actually, I like the books you have on there better than the boxes in the picture from the book.
I am always changing things around at my house and forever looking for inspiration. Thank you for the fabulous and best of all "cheep" (ha! I'm so original) decorating tips. Great series!
BTW...who won the set of prints?
Who ARE you??? Holy cow, lady, you are speaking my language. I am brand new to your blog, and I don't know how I've gone so long without it.
I could go on gushing, but I'll leave that for future comments I'll certainly be posting.
It's only Tuesday, and I usually save projects for weekends, but I may just take my bad self home after work and paint my awful kitchen... it's only paint, after all! I've been tolerating the makes-me-want-to-puke green and white sponge painting for toooo long!
Thanks for the inspiration. :)
Jenelle
I LOVE your blog! So thankful that you share the gifts that God gave you with us. I need help in the decorating arena and you have made it simple.
YAY!!!!! How exciting!!! Thank you so much! I am so excited to win! :)
Love this idea. I think I will incorporate it in the mater bath. Thanks!!
OH my, you seriously must have snuck into my house and saw the horrendous state of my front entry table. Thanks for your advice, I'm off to H.L. this afternoon. :) Can't wait for Thursday's party.
I love going shopping in my own house! Just bringing some little something from another room sometimes makes everything feel fresh!
The tables look great~

You must have stopped by my blog while I was writing an embarassingly long post about... You! You can see it here:
http://jadeinmywindow.wordpress.com/2009/02/17/youre-the-inspiration/
Apparently I have no shame.
And I don't even know your name.
And I like to rhyme if it's all the same.
To you.
Word.
That ended up rhyming and sounding a little rappy. Because rappy is a word.
And now that I've made a complete fool of myself, I'm going to go.
Nester - you're the bomb!
Funny, I already do all that stuff in "home book" but never thought about the details of why or how! If that makes sense.
Love the buttons, girl!
Tablescaping is really difficult for me, I knew know what looks good and what goes together. I just don't have the knack for it. Thanks for these tips. I'll have to check out that book.
I think that Darcy is Super Woman IRL? That button is ca-uute!
Thanks for the tutorial! I need all the help I can get!
Okay, I'm ready to do the tops of some tables! Thank you once again, Nester! I added your button to my blog. Cute, cute!
Sheryl
I love the button, and I'm looking forward to Thursday.
the Lazy Moms will be posting on Thursday!
Okay, I agree! I'm definitely going to join in {was going to anyway} because I want to use that adorable button! That Darcy is so nice.
And thanks for linking up on my blog today! :)
Amber
XOXOXOXO
Thanks for this post. Sometimes it's helpful to have things written out in black and white to realize I already have exactly what I need to get the look I want!
I have always wanted to know how to do this properly! lol Now I have inspiration to go re-arrange some tables! :)
Thank you, this was actually exactly what i needed. :)
I love that book and learning so much about tablescaping! Yours looks great.

Thank you for this great blog. In the evenings, after the kids are in bed & the house is clean enough I settle in, grab the laptop and log on. This is my time, it's fun, free & I always pick up a great idea and have a laugh. We've added lamps in areas I never would have thought of - no more harsh overhead lighting for us. I don't sew but I'm darn close to mistreating my daughters windows - I owe that confidence to you. Again, thanks!
I'm glad to hear that black and white frames are good...I have a bunch and have been wondering if they were too severe for my softening style. But I love them and now I'm affirmed in my love. Haha.
Here's what you drove me to today:
1. I first downed a 5 hour energy drink. Cause it's Feb. and I homeschool. I don't need to translate that for you, but I will. I would not be able to homeschool if every month were Feb......and 5 hour energy drinks are a small price to pay to keep my sanity.
2. I do believe that I removed every last item from every last surface in my house. And just moved 'em around until the five hours were over.
3. I can't wait to show you what I came up with. Granted, this could all change next week...because I bought ten of the 5 hour energy drinks.
4. I love you and appreciate all the little things in my home that now remind me of you. I'm 'nesterized'.....as Emily said.
5. This comment brought to you by 5 hour enery drink.
Simply Elegance! Beauty made from 'on hand'. Loving it! Thank you so much for sharing your inspiration with us.
Your display is right for so many reasons, none of which I would have been able to put my finger on prior to this post. Very informative and inspiring. Thanks!
I love your Blog.
The ideas are great and best of all they are actually "doable"...I have a corner curio cabinet in my living room and I cannot seem to merchandise it in a way that looks nice. Any suggestions?
Great post. Thanks.
Stay chic!
Thank you for sharing.....it's amazing how a few simple changes can have such a big impact!
I order the Home Book from your web page. Thank you so much for making it that easy. I have wanted that book for a while now. I can't wait to read and and get some great decorating ideas. I really appreciate all of your tips and advice. It's so nice to have somewhere to go for inspiration and "practical" ideas!!!
Thank you,
Stacy
I love, love, love reading all your tips. Not sure if I've commented before though. How do you keep the chest in your kitchen free of clutter? It looks so great the way you have it set up. In my house I could just see it being an easy spot to stick a stack of papers or something.
fantastic information!!!!!!
I like your tablescape. Your table and the one in the pic are so nicely balanced...same idea. Sooo it really works.
I will have to look for that book also.
thank you for sharing.
come by and visit when you have some time...I'm also having a giveaway!

Where do you find your white plates? I love them and need 8 dessert plates for a plate rack. I just can't seem to find what I want....any ideas?
