Painting Pine Furniture

I recently painted my yard sale purchased, pine armouire. I'm working on putting on the replacement knobs but I've had so many emails asking about this piece I decided to show it now. Ignore the red knob, it's just so we can open it until I find the perfect big one.

This is how it looked before. I think about 25% percent of houses in my neighborhood have a piece of furniture that looks like this. I love how warm it was and how it was such a great victim to withstood the abuse of 3 boys.

I've wanted to paint this piece since I saw Meredith's painted armoire {here's her before}. So, naturally, two weeks before we moved, I grabbed a pillow and an oval box for color inspiration and then all my color wheels and found a color I thought would be a good choice.

Of course, it never occurred to me to remember what color I choose. It's not like I write a blog and people ever want to know any paint colors. My goal was to have a robin's egg blue but not a bright one like Martha leans toward but a dirty, natural feeling blue. Also, since I was painting over pine that had plenty of knots, I wanted to make sure it was a color that would look ok once the knots bleed through the paint. Because bleeding always seem to happen with knots.

I have painted raw pine in the past. I've used coats of primer and paint and within weeks, yes, WEEKS the knots start to bleed through. This time, I tried Behr Paint and Primer in One. {And wouldn't it be nice if I were getting a big fat check from Behr since I'm broadcasting how much I love this product? I am not. Behr has no idea what a Nester is.}

Dear Behr, please feel free to allow me to be your spokesperson. I am the world's worst painter and this paint worked like magic. I'm still in awe.
--your's truly,
The Nester

So, it's been almost 6 weeks now and so far, no bleeding. I will tell you if and when I see any signs of knots coming through. And if and when they do come through, I will be ok with that because I picked a color that will look even better with knots.

Now to the nitty {knitty?} gritty. How I, the world's most horrible, impatient painter, painted my armoire. And it turned out great.

1. Put the furniture on movers {those round things} and put plastic on the ground and move the armouire onto the plastic away from the wall. I did this all by myself thankyouverymuch. I think I even left the TV plugged in.

2. Get your professional paint roller holder thing and line it with your professional liner. Cake pan and aluminum foil.

3. Get your paint. Here's the formula for what I used if you must have it. I think I would have been happy with any of the 20 colors I choose from. Usually, when people try to pick a robin's egg they go waaaay too turquoise. You almost want a gray. Then, when you put the color next to gray it should look robin's egg. {216 is the bottom number under the "B"}

Hello? Just realized that the name of the color that I had matched is on the label. Sherwin Williams Halcyon Green 6213. But remember, you really cannot tell what paint colors truly look like by looking at a computer screen. And I adjusted this photo so you could read the words so, if you think you would like it please get a sample first. In real life, the color is more greenish grey than what you see in the photo on my computer. Quietude, the one above also looks fantastic. I like the eggshell finish. I don't like it really shiny so eggshell is a good choice for me. Why did I do a color match? Because I decided to paint this the same day I painted this. I didn't have a Behr color wheel and I didn't want to go to Home Depot, grab colors then come home and decide. Which is how you must do it. Never decide a color in a florescent lighted store. You need to choose it in the room where you will be using the color.

4. Start with a brush and do the corners. Or start with a roller and do the sides. I don't really have a set way. I did wipe down the piece with a damp cloth first too, I guess I should add a number in for that. But other than knocking off the dust, no prep work.

5. I took the drawers out and left them for later. I also removed the handles with pliers because I didn't want to mess with painting around them. I've got new handles I'll show you soon.

6. Decide where you want the paint to stop. You can paint all of the inside or be lazy like me and just do the doors. I simply painted whatever I could with the roller and let it stop at the edges. No brushing meticulously for me. I only used the brush in the tight corners and around the hinges.

7. I admit I didn't do the best painting job ever to grace the internet. I painted three coats, I waited a few hours between coat one and two and then overnight before I did the third coat. I think it took me maybe 4 hours total from clean room to clean room.

8. I liked the fact that I had big square hinges to work around. I got a little paint on them but so? I'm not expecting the paint police anytime soon. They are busy arresting people who are too afraid to paint, because we all know that is a much bigger offense. And, yes, I left everything inside while I painted it.

9. Why am I still numbering? Here are some close ups, I won't bore you with my words...

I love that you can still see the wood when you open it up.

Don't forget to paint the top. I didn't paint the back.

Where I decided to stop the paint. There's no wrong.

I didn't let the paint dry long enough before I shut the doors so there is a little paint that rubbed off. I could fix it but I probably never will.

There you have it. I feel like every time I see this piece it thanks me for taking the time for painting it. It was so quick and simple. My only regret? I should have painted it years ago.

it looks great! and don't worry about the paint police... they're still trying to figure out how to arrest me after i painted two yucky MDF bookshelves from wal-mart & the paint did NOT stick to the shelves. it's a huge mess. oh well, live & learn! then buy real wood... and paint it!

Great! I am married to a perfectionist who is very busy at work - so I always do the painting - and it is never perfect. Your armoir looks great!

I LOVE that you love the imperfections! :) it looks great...! i think the foil in the cake pan is genius... wish i would've thought of that a million liners ago!

Lovely! I have a pine cabinet that I painted red - my husband almost had a stroke - but I love it!

Loving that color! My knots are showing on the open kitchen shelves we built, even with primer, but it's ok. You've taught us "It doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful." And I live by that mantra every day.

This? Perfection.

The cake pan and liner? Genius.

You? Hilarious.

I think if the knots show through, it's going to look great. Thanks for explaining to us how to choose a good Robin's Egg blue, because you are right, mine always comes out looking way too turquoise.

It looks great. I'm loving the cake pan thing and kicking myself for never thinking of that myself considering how much I paint. Which is a lot!! Genius!!

I agree that you need to check the color in the room where you are going to use the paint. But .. and this is that exception that proves the rule - I recently picked an orange (orange of all colors!) on a whim and it is absolutely the most perfect color in the room I painted.

HELP! I was shocked that you just posted this. Last week we painted a media cabinet with this exact paint (satin in black) and are having such a hard time with it. My husband came back from Home Depot with it instead of cans of paint and primer. We lightly sanded (by hand) the stained, spruce wood, half-price cabinet we just got from Ikea. I used a tack cloth then did two coats of this paint in black. We waited 24-48 hours between coats and before using it. It started immediately scratching down to the original brown when we put the shelves back in and set something a little rough on top. It is not dramatic b/c of the brown underneath. I thought we needed a poly coat, but the lady at Lowe's told me last night that poly would just peel off at this point & I need to sand it all down and use regular primer + paint. My husband refuses to sand it down. What did we do wrong? Any advice welcome! (Sorry so long...)

OH NO!!! YOU can come back here and we'll discuss in the comments or I'll email you.

I"m not a paint expert so I'm not sure I can help. But when I think about this paint on my cab peeling it seems crazy.

I wonder if you got a glossy finish in your paint and that could help it start to peel when painted over certain finishes?

thanks so much for FINALLY posting this! just kidding...

i'm still trying to get the guts, 100% guts to do it, not to mention swaying my husband!

i'm proud of you nester for getting it "prepped" all by yourself! ours weighs a TON! no way could i lift if by myself

and you just may have convinced me to leave the wood showing on the inside...i really like that look!

oh, and i'm thinking a green!

I love this post! I have been wanting to try that paint, and probably will when I get around the painting my kitchen. Since I have red, I know I will need primer, and if I can do it all in one: Yippee.

I think I have all those fandecks as well. I keep them in my craft dresser and pull them out all the time.

I'm new to all this painting business. I have an armoire I'd love to paint, but I always thought I needed to sand it first (and I'm way too lazy to do that). Is there a reason you didn't sand yours first? My armoire isn't pine, it's been painted before, so I guess I'd probably have to sand it then, right?

Beth said...

Love how it turned out. My mom has an armoire identical to that that I need to paint for her. I actually kind of like the red knob you have on there temporarily... it's a nice POP of color (kind of like when people wear that coral/red turquoise jewelry with blues). Oh... Shawshank Redemption is one of my all-time favorite movies (saw it in your drawer!). :)

I love you! I am in the process of painting my counter tops and everyone things I am crazy. I completely agree that to NOT paint is the biggest crime there is.

The day I was going to start painting my counter tops my hubby asked what I was going to do that day. I told him I wasn't going to tell because he would just try and talk me out of it. All he said was,

"Oh, what are you painting today?"

I never said!

Michelle: I didn't sand because mine was pretty much untouched wood from what I could tell.

Yes, if you have a shiny surface, you need to sand and scuff it up. Also if you have what might be oil based paint, I think I would go ahead and use kilz primer instead of this with the latex paint. There are some tests you can do to figure out if you have oil based paint {google it} but I don't even know if people really use it all that much any more.

If you have an old house with painted cabs, you might want to test for oil based paint just in case.

I've also found that paints with a shinier finish tend to peel more easily.

High Gloss = High peel {I'm not a fan of high gloss}

Semi gloss = semi peel

satin/eggshell= not as much peel

that's totally my thoughts and not scientific.

What a great looking armoire! Pretty blue! The "natural-no paint" people are probably squirming in their seats right now, but let them. I think it looks great. I was sold this furniture in a store in Colorado, and I always thought that it would look nice painted, especially this armoire with it's curved lines. Well done, Nester!

I have a similar armoire, but with a flat top. I had paint chips on it for 2 months. Then I saw yours painted and it was enough to boost my confidence. I love how yours looks and now I love how mine looks.
The only thing I added was that I purchased 2 appliques for the doors, because the panels were too flat.
Thank you for all your inspiration! You deserve a hugh following and for Behr to stand up and notice : )

My husband (a deputy) is the paint police here! I have painted my entire house by myself . I worked on it the whole month of June...moved everything! (He got a ruptured disc at the beginning of the month so could not help) However, I need a break to enjoy some fun and laziness with my boys so I am choosing to wait on my "touch-ups" around the ceiling, baseboards, floor, trim, etc... However, he keeps asking me when Iam going to start them and pointing all of them out!!! (there are many!!!) Ugh! I am not the neatest or most patient painter either!!! I think your piece looks awesome and I so relate to your techniques!!! I will keep the police here so you don't have to endure his "white glove inspector" comments!!!

This is what I get for not previewing my post. I meant to say that I once sold this kind of furniture in a store in CO.

Oh, and I agree with the gloss of a paint and peeling. I think her name was Jenny that had a problem painting her Ikea cabinet. I like using glossier paint in certains areas, but you must be careful because it will peel on occasion. If your not going to adjust those shelves on your cabinet anymore, Jenny, you might just touch up the piece for now. Then, live with it and see how it fares before you try and do a "do-over". Best of luck!

THANK YOU!!! I am a slacker painter like you and I think I can handle 4 hours and leaving the TV where it is. I am so excited to do this (eventually.) First I have a Thomasville thrift store hutch / china cabinet that is begging to be fixed up. It was $150 (a HUGE splurge for me) and the poor thing has been patiently sitting in my garage 2 summers. It's going to be black and will display my white dishes in the top glass part and house all our homeschooling stuff in the bottom and in the drawers...so I need the paint job to hold up. Maybe I should get that Behr paint / primer for it too. I'm struggling to decide how to do it...thus the procrastination.

The armoire is beautiful. Thanks, as always, for sharing your tricks and imperfection.

Thank you so much for posting this! I have a bookshelf that must have come from the same store as your armoire. I want to paint it, and I've struggled to think of just the right spray paint color. Now I know what I'll do! I'll just get out my fandeck, choose the color I like, and get a gallon of that paint-and-primer. We need to contact Behr; you'd be a fabulous spokesperson.

What I really love about your robin's-egg-blue color (aside from the fact that it makes sense for the Nester) is that it will look wonderful not only when the knots bleed through, but also when little bits of paint get knocked off or worn off. Which will happen.

Dearest nester,

I am in deseprate need of your help or anyone else's helkp!!! Please oh please help this mamma of 4 blessings!!!

Here is the question of all time for those of us who have knotty pine and can't stand it (But of course everyone keeps telling me im CRAZY to paint over it, it will not work but the ladder is to live like im in a tree house!! LOL!! But no really!!!...I don't want to live in a tree house!!!). And everyone telling me this does not live in my house with me, hubs would probably try painting it if we could find a paint that would at least cover somewhat.

Oh nester...(pleading, hopeless voice here) We have 2 rooms our soon to be our daughters room and famiy room all knotty pine. All my family say no no it won't work knots will show through. Im telling you there is something about how people say this so infactically about knotty pine, whats up with that. They would rather see me live in a tree then dare to ever try to suggest painting it. I suspect it's a NO, No in decorating, I don't know but everyone says don't paint and...ummmm... I wonder why everyone gets so passionate about it!!! (All light hearted here and joking....but honestly i can't take living in a tree much longer!!!).

So the question of all time is can I paint my knotty pine walls without all the regaramo (Im sorry i can't spell!) of sanding all walls and such. Oh please, please let the answer be YES!!!

Could you answer soon???? Can anyone answer soon??? Can you or anyone help this desperate momma just trying to have normal looking walls?

Indebted to you and anyone who can help for life! Oh please, please help this momma who loves the Lord with all her heart out, oh please!!!

Thank you!

-I apologize in advance if I sound so pathetic but I feel that way right now. The pine looked great just the way it was!" lol. To each his own I guess. ;o) I'm glad you like it painted esp. since it's in your house and that's the only thing that matters. And I'm certainly not against painting furniture (I've done it several times).

The Nester said...

JOY!

PROBABLY!

If those pine walls are super shiny with thick varnish it will be more difficult.

I would take a day or so and scuff them up really good with sand paper, or a sander just to knock off the shiny finish if there is one.

My opinion. Painted paneling with bleeding knots looks better than knotty pine that you don't like. Even if you were to paint it white the knots would bleed a golden color and with the right furnitre would still look good. Or, you could just touch it up every year or so.

I would probably prime the wood first with kilz. OR, if you want to try this paint, paint one strip and wait a few weeks and see what happens.

Honey, it sounds like you really just need someone to give you permission to do what you really want to do. Yes, go ahead, do it!

Just use some kind of primer!

You are so gutsy and creative. The color is perfect and I really appreciate you sharing the process. Looking forward to seeing the new knobs.
Peace.

You are killin' me here. Hilarious! You did a great job and yes... Behr SHOULD pay you. 1/2 of America will now go out and buy that color of their paint! We should all have t-shirts that we wear into the paint store that say "The Nester says...". Great job! Gutsy color! I love it!

1. Great job
2. I use cake pans too! shhhh
3. You paint just like I do....leave everything inside. Why move it twice?

Love all you do!

LOVE it! It turned out amazing! I also love that you didn't paint the hardware...perfect blue.

Dude! I have this EXACT armoire and it has been banished to the basement because of the dated look. You're a genious because you just bought me a whole new piece of furniture for the price of a gallon of paint. You. Rock.

Julia said...

Nester....You should look on www.mackenzie-childs.com for knobs. Cutest knobs in the world on there...and they aren't paying me to say that.

I so relate to how you paint on a whim...it's just paint, right?

I enjoy your blog. Julia

Oh Joy sweetie I want to just give you a hug!

It's YOUR HOUSE, and you're the one that has to live in it, and you clearly DO NOT LIKE the knotty pine. So it needs to go, for the sake of your sanity if nothing else. Prime it well-heck use two or three coats if you have to. Then paint it whatever color your heart yearns for.

ain't no paint police coming to my house...cuz' I ain't afraid of paint! i desperately want to paint a piece of furniture blue. I'm looking...right now. love your blue armoire and how imperfect it is!

I love that color. It's actually the color in my guest bedroom/bathroom & laundry room. The armoire looks great now.

Hi Nester! I just found your blog and it's my new favorite. I love your taste and your furniture and your hilariousness. Thanks for taking the time to teach the rest of us how to make our homes beautiful. I live in a dive of a rental but you have inspired me that that is no reason to not make it beautiful.

Amy {The Red Chair Blog} said...

Love that you left the TV in it when you painted it. Also love the temporary red clown nose knob. Instant gratification is a beautiful thing!

Kimm at Reinvented said...

Love the armoire, but I gotta admit, I was more thrilled with your endorsement of the Home Depot paint and primer in one! I've been thinking of trying it, getting ready to change my powder room and paint over RED. If it works for the Nester, it will work for me! ;)

Misti of Studio M Designs said...

Awesome job Nester! I was cringing at first because I love the wooden armoire, but it does look fabulous. I have an enormous pine armoire in my bedroom that I have been threatening to paint black forever and a another hutch in the dining room with lots of glass doors. I'm totally afraid to tackle that one...glass doors ugh!

Oh, and I have always used the gigantic heavy-duty foil for my painting jobs too. And lots of Ziploc bags for my wet brushes!

I don't know if you read all your comments and I don't know if it will throw you off that it looks like I am a dog. (I have a dog blog and his picture will come up.) But, you are such an inspiration. I have been thinking of painting the brick of my fireplace for a couple of years ... the inside part, not the outside part. I've lived in this house for 23 years and it's always been just plain brick and I think a coat of white paint will make it look fresh and new in here and will go with the new furniture I just got, the new linen drapes and new color on the wall and .. yes, the new painted tv armoire I just ordered. But it is so permanent. Wait, I hear a knock at the door... I think it is the paint police coming to arrest me.

Aubrey said...

I've just decided I'm too anal of a painter and I need to be more like you and not worry about a little paint on the hinges.

And again, your reflection is a skinny one. If you EVER think you're not, think about a preggo gal in UT who is very close to using the growths on her hips as drink holders. Yes, such a pretty sight.

Things That Inspire said...

Wow - this is so inspirational - I have a pine Ethan Allen hutch that I used to have in the kitchen, but got tired of the pine. I thought about painting it, but I did not want the knots to show through (as they have on every piece of pine I have ever painted). Great tutorial, and THANK YOU for the paint recommendation!

Teresa said...

Love it- you crack me up with your very "original" paint holder thing- I will have to remember that the next time I paint and don't have a paint pan. =)

"Pain Police"! Haha! That would be my mother!
Well, I'm going to do it. I'm painting the knotty pine wall in our lower level. Thanks for the hint with the Behr paint. It IS the best paint.

I have this SAME armoire. My husband & I talked about painting it when we moved but decided it wouldn't work. Thanks for the inspiration. Now the hard part...what color?!? ;)

I love it! I am about to paint (well, after our walls get painted) the dressers in our bedroom. My husband thinks it's going to be way more difficult but after reading this I know it won't be. Thanks for the tips!

We have the same armoire and I also painted mine. I did it white and took my palm sander and sanded it on the edges and corners. I put antique clear glass knobs on it and it looks adorable in our master bedroom.

How I love your honesty! Another inspiring project and, true to Nester form, not perfect but BEAUTIFUL!! I love that it's okay for me not to care when projects I attempt have flaws.

The foil-lined cake pan gave me a good chuckle, too. Most of the time "good enough" is more than enough. Am I right?

I think I have the same piece at my mom's house. It's great and functional, yet I was burnt out on it. I will have to tell my mom how u breathed new life into it.

I love it painted and love the color. I am laughing that you painted it with the electronics inside. I could NEVER do this! I am way way too messy and am 100% sure that I would end up with paint on our electronics which would result in some very not fun conversations with my loving and adorable hubby. ;)

Looks great! I just recently finished my very first furniture painting project...an armoire...looking very similar in shape and knotty pine as yours. :) I painted mine a black satin finish and, like you, am still looking for the perfect knobs. Funny you should post about remembering to paint the top...I missed that on mine (as only the front is arched like yours - the rest of the top is unseen and flat behind it). I noticed that oversight AFTER all was cleaned up. Hubby fixed it for me, though. :)

I still think of you painting with paper towels, I love your cake pan lined with foil. You are a genius and you never cease to inspire me!

I have to tell you that my husband hates you. He's never met you but he hates you and your less than 'perfect' painting instructions.

I personally love you. I love that I can be 80% perfect and 20% flawed. It makes actually starting a project possible because I don't have to worry about being perfect.

Love you lots even though I've never met you. Keep up the good work.

Nester, I love your paint pan! LOL I need some advise. I want to paint our currently paneled bedroom. I am also going to have to paint the furniture in there too.
When deciding what color to go with, do you first choose the paint color, the bedding the window mis treatments or what? I just don't know where to start. Help!

Sorry Nester, I totally love the rustic original piece better than the painted version... but hey, to each his own :)

Hello, this is my first time stopping in, you were a link from
Kimba's soft place to land. Love how you armoire looks, can't wait to see the handles and knobs you pick. Oh, just for info sake in the future, I recently read in a consumer report that the best paint for your dollar is Kilz and all you need to do is have them add the tint to it, so it saves you priming and painting. How cool is that, I was happy cause I am gonna be doing all that in my bathroom soon. Thought you would be happy to know that since you don't like painting anymore than I do. Ha!! Have a good day,
Blessings, Nellie

Nester, it looks gorgeous! I missed this post while I had company, and I'm so grateful for the link.

My very favorite detail are the colored plates hung above the armoire. The deep red with the robin's egg blue is such a lovely combination.

I am having the best time roaming through your archives! Question: How much abuse can a painted pine piece of furniture take? Our dining room table, chairs, and hutch are a 10 year old set made from distressed pine. The hutch still looks nice — it has see-through drawer fronts and a nice marble top — but the table looks like hell. Would it be crazy to paint? Would it work for something like a table? This is the one where we eat.

Did you have to degloss or sand the armoire first? I am about to paint an old pine dresser and bakers rack and could use a tip or two on that. They both have a finish on them. Should I use latex or oil based paint? Thanks for your blog! I love it.

This is awesome. I would have totally passed up a pine armoire like this, thinking it's not my style, completely missing the potential. It's amazing! And a perfect color!

And I didn't mind the red knob. I would have thought, "Some mismatched-vintage-Anthropologie-esque knobs would totally MAKE this!"

Megan said...

Oh yeah, I missed the part about it being raw pine.

Just found your blog and love it! Question for you:
We have a huge oak cabinet that was custom made--we bought it from a guy who had it made years ago--but now we want to paint it. I'm pretty sure there's a thin coat of varnish on it...do I need to sand it or use paint thinner or can I just use your magic Behr paint?
thanks in advance,
Heather :)
