Two years ago when we lived in our house that we owned, we planted sunflowers. I don't think it's too late to do it now. We just bought a few different varieties and started them from seed. I think I spent $3. They grew lightning fast which worked well because I am, I mean my boys are so impatient.
Just plant them where they will get lots of sun in a place where you don't mind having tall, lanky, gangly flowers leaning out at you. I decided to be all daring and plant them right at our front porch. Cars slowed down to look at them. Children ran and hid in their mother's skirts. It was awesome.
On mother's day of that year we had a glorious hail storm. It was one of those beautiful storms where it started at 70 degrees and sunny then the clouds roll in and before you know it, it's dark and pouring rain. And dropping Barbie head sized hailstones. It was magnificent. A thrilling mother's day. We all sat on the porch and watched the deafening hail and I remember standing there trying to decide if it was worth the risk of losing an eye to run out and protect my fledgling sunflowers.
After the storm a few flowers were lost. But, the sun immediately came out and steam rose from the streets. Hailstones were piled up along the edges of the yard as we gathered a few ziplock baggies full to save to play with in the summer. Although it was bright and sunny, you could see your breath. It was an amazing day. I love God's creation. What a creative, breathtaking show.

I love sunflowers. My kitchen is somewhat accented with a sunflowers theme. I kinda added lemons and limes in with the sunflowers this year,since lemons are the "in"thing. It actually works, I have a pack of sunflower seeds to plant. Maybe I will do that today. I am watching my newly painted Tobacco Road hallway dry.
Hey Nestah (that's how I pronounce it because I think it sounds kinda sassy)! Here in California we just don't get real weather like that. So whenever we travel east, we get so excited when storms roll in. Many times on vacation we've just sat and watched the storms. They are amazing! I always figure the locals must think we're a bunch of weirdos!

Loving the sunflowers, too cute!! We planted some last year and they were so great until the birds came and pecked the heck out of them. Then they were just ugly and we had to rip them down... guess we should have harvested the seeds sooner :( Super cute picture btw!!

Love sunflowers! We started a bunch of sunflower seeds in an egg carton about a week ago. Man they grow fast! I'm going to let my 4-year old repot them into pretty (cheap) pots and give them to his grandmas and aunts for mother's day. Then he can go help them transplant the flower into their yards. Yeah for me! Cheap, sentimental gifts AND someone else takes care of one of my kids for a little while! ;-)

sunflowers are my fav!!! I planted some seeds this year and I am so excited to see them grow...we planted tons at our farm a few years back, and it had to be one of the most beautiful patches of flowers I have ever seen...like God spilled a huge gallon of yellow paint on the beautiful GReen grass! He is so GOOD!

Ive been checking out your ebay items...are you a bit surprised how much some things are going for??? I think you are making way more on ebay than you would at a garage sale. I have a feeling by the time is up you are going to be able to redo some room in your house with the money..lol
Sunflowers are my favorite (check out my blog for the proof :-)). We started some from seeds last weekend and they are over an inch tall already! My son bugs me everyday to plant them outside but we could still get frost for a couple of more weeks so it isn't safe yet. BTW - I'm checking out a few of your Ebay auctions - wish me luck!

Back to your now-famous garland... It hit me the other day that my sister does this with tulle and makes tutus with tulle, ribbon, and bells using the same technique as the garland. But what is really fabulous is that she made one giant "tutu" for her daughter's daybed for a bedskirt. Anyway, thought I'd share the idear.

Oh, Nestah, this has nothing to do with sunflowers, but I had to tell you because I thought of you at the time. Today, I drove the long drive to the far away city where Joann's fabrics is. And I bought 12 yards of beautiful red and tan silk plaid for only $32 (and it was the wide width kind)! I was so excited! It was in that back room, and I didn't even see Quasimodo back there!

My mom (Grammy) just gave my little girl some sunflower seeds. They actually have Veggietales on the front of them and my daughter is more excited about that than the actual flowers. I'm excited to have plants that are taller than me! It's nice to see that they really grow - thanks for sharing! We're in W-S so we are in the same growing season :)

We had a bird feeder that the birds kindly dumped some deed from one year. In a few weeks, we had our own sunflower garden out by the feeder. I used some as centerpieces for a party I had, and they turned out soooo pretty! BTW, you are too cute. That is a great pic.

I love sunflowers! We had a long row of them that ran across one side of our old house and I loved snapping pics each summer of my son standing under them. Our new house is on a wooded lot so I haven't tried to grow anything like that (tons of shade here), but I miss them. What a fun post! -Julia :-)
