Evolution of a Hutch

My dumputer is finally connected to the rest of the world. Meanwhile I've had loads of time to play with all of my displaced stuff. I've got this sideboard, hutch, shelf unit that was in my dining room and now is in my keeping room {yes, that is an actual name for a room and it usually refers to a small sitting room off the kitchen} most of the time they have a fireplace--mine--not.

First I tried lots of frames...
Its hot in this house with all the sunshine and that felt so heavy--I love showing off all of my pictures but this look will look better in the winter. Let's add in some white and as Mylie would say, see if we can get the best of both worlds.

Maybe the scrapbook {click here for instructions} paper background is adding too much. If I could only figure out where I packed my extra paper. But, I do have lots of black frames I'll just turn them around to see if I like a black background.

I like it. Maybe that's a project for later. For now, I have to use what I have and make that work. Maybe I need all white.

I like that too. But, I want a little more going on for today.

Are you wondering how I hung that big picture in the center of the shelves that I showed at the very top? Look closely at the top shelf in the photo below--or click on it to enlarge it. See that upholstery tack? They are great for so many things!

Uh....WOE! (How do you even spell Woe??) You are amazing...all those different ways of arranging things on that hutch! I am not worthy to be commenting :) I like it all!

Each picture you posted I kept saying "oooh, I like this one best!" The final picture really is my favorite though although the all white picture is a close second.

If you have a chance, please pop over to my very new blog. (Because I'm sure you have a LOT of extra time while moving into a new house!) I posted some pictures today of my "formal" living room and could use some advice. I bought some barn stars and would like to hang them...but need advice on where.

Thanks, your Nestiness! I really do love coming and seeing your decorating skills at work.

They all look great! I like the last best though!

Darn your good!!! I love the new nest, it's looks so comfy and cozy. Is that a swim pool I see across the street? How fun. Thanks for all the great ideas.

Love the last look best.

Nester, I'm speechless. How in the *world* have you only been "moved into" this house for a few days yet you are already decorating?!? I'm pretty sure that not everyone is that fast! Or is it that I'm just really slow?!? I'd still be unpacking kitchen cupboards and clothes at this point. Your new nest is already looking so homey! :) Love the hutch.

I like the last picture too

Cute! I liked the last one best, too. Where did you get that hutch? It's exactly what we need!

Love it!!!

More pictures, please!!!

You saved the best for last. It's so fun to play with your toys. Looks like you're making great progress on the new house. Looking forward to more pics.

Two things--I think you must be some kind of energy bunny to be able to get that much unpacking done! How do you even have TIME to fuss over the arrangement of the shelves? Secondly, I like the last picture the best. It's light, but the black (and green) touches bring it some warmth. Nicely done!

Scrapbook paper!! I would have thought vintage wallpaper! Awesome!

Im in love with white dishes... I like the way you "show" yours off. I have been searching for a hutch for my dinning room just not sure if I have enough room to hold it. I bet your having a blast geeting to play house. I love changing things up! Susie H

I love them all but the last is definitely my favorite! I have to agree with all of the above , you must be the energizer bunny! We moved into our new home 2 months ago and I'm still not completely unpacked! lol Everything looks great! I can't wait to see the rest!

First, I don't think congratulated you on your new home yet. I wish you and your family many years of happy memories. Secondly, I love your hutch! As I looked at each picture, I thought "I like that one the best". All the way to the end where the last one is really my favorite. Also, I love the 3 different paper patterns. I may try this. Thanks for sharing, JoAnne

Nester, where do you find all your white things? I know you decorate on a budget, but if I had all those, I'd break the bank! Your home is looking lovely, as all your blogger-bff's are telling you. Thanks for taking time out to update and make us feel inspired!

Oh, and your fake plants! Where can I find some of those for cheap? I can't seem to locate any that aren't just downright ugly and expensive to boot. Ugh, my area has NO good yardsales. I miss the south.

I am in awe. I can't wait to see more, more MORE!

I love each option. Please stop unpacking right now and come to my house and help me.

Perhaps you could open a design business to help those of us without your "decorating on a budget" gene!

you are a woman after my own heart. I have the same hutch, don't you just love it!

the last pic is my favorite also. I think a little green goes a long way! i am so glad to come to your blog and see what everyone is talking about. A lot of people in this blogging world love you and your style, so I had to check you out! I too love to decorate, in fact I have my own business-so my dear, please stop by, we could be hte decor divas together. The tassels are darling! I love the texture that they add to a space! I would love for you to come by and say hi! I will be back to see what other fun things you come up with!!

Are you on crack or something......jeez unpack, breathe and then get busy.

Whoa relax Nester you're too much

Anonymous said...

I like them all but the last two are my favorite. I always think white plates are boring but boy howdy was I wrong...its what you do with them. Im going out to buy white plates...of course yours are not PLAIN but still...they are white. If you ever give up blogging you will have women all over the country having meltdowns.lol

I need more stuff. I think if I got all my stuff together from my whole house, it would all fit in your hutch. I've been trying to spread my stuff around my house and it ain't workin out so great. Can anyone say "Empty"?

Valarie Lea said...

Golly did you read my mind, because I was just wondering that about the picture, when you told us how to do it. Freaky!

I like the last arrangement very classy. :)

Love it! I will be back for sure!

I did the same thing with a new cabinet in our remodeled bath today. I just didn't think to take photos. And I also argued some with my hubby, who had ideas drastically different from mine and is very active in decorating the house, LOL.

i loved all the different combo.s but I think the one you went with nailed it for sure (or tacked it...). Just enough texture and height and contrast to keep it all interesting. And black and white NEVER goes out of style :)!

I will stop by again.

Love your hutch. I also like the last picture. Black and White with a hint of a green plant as the center focal point.... outstanding! Best wishes in your new home, may it be filled with lots of love and happy memories.

Marianne said...

I heart the final look of your hutch. But I truly envie the great pieces you put in there. That is some beautifull china you have there girl. I am always trying to make 'nester-like' arrangements but it never looks the way you do it. Maybe its because I don't have the good stuff. Or maybe I just don't have your talent for putting it together. Well alas I'll just have to keep coming over to enjoy yours.

Kitty Scraps said...

Oh Nester, how do you do it? You are down right amazing woman! I loved each arrangement best till I saw the next one! lol

Now I have to wonder if there is some magic arranging formula you use? Like what is your design process as you look at your empty hutch... what design thoughts are running thru your mind? I have a very tough time arranging small decorative things. I can arrange furniture, art work on walls, but the knick knacks on shelves, table tops, hutches, forget it! I am hopeless so I would love to know your "secret" process you use...

Again, beautiful job! Put your feet up now Girl and take a break!

Oh my goodness you work fast. I ogled over all your possiblities but I have to say the last one was the bestest. Keep it coming.
I would love it if you came by my blog and gave me your opinion on my reused canvas project.

Have a creative day.

Hey Nestah! Thanks for the explanation of a "keeping room." I didn't know.

The hutch looks great. I wish I had one to rearrange. I love those silhouettes. I've been wanting to try some.

Hope you're getting all settled in!

Like always I love it, the scrap paper idea is great. I am now the proud owner of one barn star....I found it at a Fabric Store. My Hubby likes it and think I should buy another one.

Where do you buy your wonderful furniture from?

Well, I like them ALL and I love the way you stack pieces front to back (i.e. vase in front of small plate in front of larger plate.) Somehow you pull it off without the final arrangement looking busy. You're inspiring me to work on my big bookcases some more, Nester! Thanks for the peek inside your new home!

i'm not planning on moving any time soon, but now i know that i don't have to worry about unpacking: moving is just the mechanism for playing in new places with my stuff that hasn't become rooted to a spot. AND when i do it, i just do a room, and then move on to the next room with whatever is left. will you have enough stuff to do all 10 rooms? and is there a rule about spray painting an antique-but-marred(therefore reduced value?) desk one no longer likes?? ready to spray so let me know! jane
