Southern Withdrawl: emphasis on drawl

When we used to be "rich" {last week} we lived across the street from this. I took this picture out of the playroom window. You can see a big open grassy area, lots of pavement for bikes, and ....THE POOL. Oh and see that thing in the sky on the left right above the tree line? It's the goodyear blimp because we lived close to all kinds of fun stuff. I am obsessed with the blimp. I have about 39 photos of it but that is another post.

My three active boys did lots of this. Even though I was usually dragging them here by the end of the summer.

We had friends with one of these. Miss you Mike and Teresa!

And of course one of these.

Miss you real bad.

Even when it was cold out, our boys could ride their bikes all over.

But, this was the best part.

And of course, this...

Now, we resort to this because, the only thing across the street from us now is such a disgrace, oh the humanity-- is another house? We are truly trying to "live like no one else so we can live like no one else". Thanks for that reminder Bonita!

We are off to find a community pool before we all have to enter into counseling. Gosh, were we ever spoiled by our last location! What do you do to stay cool in the summer?

Nester -
I feel your pain....no pool here either. Just last weekend we did water balloons too...and the sprinkler, and the super soaker. Why don't you go buy a Super Soaker and surprise your boys with it..you know, sneek up when they're not expecting it and get them really good. WalMart has them and they're not too expensive. I think, however, that you'd probably end up buying one for each boy...even the grown one. :-) Enjoy your day!

Those boys sure are cuties. What a shame such cuties have to sweat in the summer. You could get a slip-n-slide. Or a baby pool for them to soak in. Or a sprinkler.

Ok. I have 4 year olds. Sue me.

oh, and btw...someone asked me why you have a burp cloth with my name on it in your etsy shop. Would somebody buy that already?

Okay, Nester, ever since finding out that you live so close and all I've been longing to have you over to get to know you and by all means to have you tell me what on earth to do with my house that looks nothing like yours. But after this post I don't think I can bear to have you come to Redneck Woods. You would faint dead away.

I feel your pain. I live your pain day after day after day. I love my trees and my big yard and that's about it.

I admire you for taking a step down, though honestly the pictures of your new house look terrific. I have a hunch that you can turn any place into a homey paradise (which is why I so desperately need your help in Redneck Woods!). Remember, live like no one else so you can live like no one else. Freedom from debt is a wonderful thing! Better even than a house with a view!

P.S. I see that blimp regularly too, only from a different angle.

That last picture pretty much sums up our summer cooling off tactics. Outdoor pools are few and far between, here, and it can get pretty pricey just to paticipate. Good Luck in your pool adventures!

Awwww, your boys are precious. I love the water balloon pic. My ds is down with my parents who have a HUGE house complete with an inground pool and jacuzzi (he loves the jacuzzi). We'll be getting him back at the end of the month. We are so not going to be cool after all the spoiling he's getting right now. I stay cool by staying indoors. I can't let the sun ruin my lily white complexion. Also, I worship the a/c. I bless Willis Carrier every summer day. He invented the a/c. In case you didn't know. I'm a dork, therefore I do.

We need to go to the pool but alas we have to go to the community pool also. Luckily we have 2 good ones here.

We sit in the house with the shades all down, the AC cranking, the lights off (thay give off heat}.Or in the basement its cooler down there. No cooking or cleaning. Too hot.

Sorry Nester....We have an ugly Above ground pool....(gasp). It was a lot cheaper than an inground and would last longer than the fake blue blow up pools they sell here in ny.

Maybe you could get one of those and you could NESTITIZE It. I have faith you could make it look great. The Super soaker's are a good thought to.

Marie said...

How do we stay cool? We bought a $300 monstrosity for the backyard. AKA a POOL. It's cheap, but it's worth it's weight in gold this summer. We use it every single day. Dare I say...I love it? ;o)

Krista said...

Last year, we hung out at our own pool. This year, we will hang out at the community center that is just 11 houses away.

I love the blimp, too. We are from Akron (Ohio) so we saw it a lot. In fact, my cousin dated the guy who guarded the blimp at the Wingfoot Lake Hangar - the place that the blimp hangs out at while it is in Akron. We used to go out there and ride in it as it floated 40 feet above the ground, hang out at the hangar (and hear all of the ghost stories) and all that good stuff. My boys LOVED it!

It WILL be fine! You know why you are doing what you are doing; keep it in the forefront of your mind. In the long run this will benefit your kids more than a pool. Hang in there!!

Hey Nester! I love your pool pictures. We have a pool club that's just a few houses down where we spend a lot of time in the summer. However, the pool hasn't really been warm enough yet. We bought a slip and slide a couple weeks ago and the kids have been having a great time with that in the back yard.

Anonymous said...

Hi,

I was also going to say a slip and slide sorta thing. My mom inlaw has a big above ground pool that was purchased at there local walmart. A monstrosity that someone mentioned above- LOL!!! But oh so worth it for the summer! They dug a place for it added sand and pumped up the pool with air and whalla a good size pool that can be taken down and re-used again next summer for a reasonable cost and will last a good while if taken care of. The pool is made of a harder plastic material. I thought it would get a hole in it for sure but so far the past 2 years it's worked out great for them. Now they don't have little boys at home but these days harder plastic keeps well and strudy for a long time.

Community pool sounds great too! My parents have an in-ground pool so we go there (Or maybe the grandparents can get a pool the one i mentioned so all the grandkids can come over for swims- wink!) but we often also spend a lot of our time at the park and make a fun day out of it. My older kids bring there books to read. We have some small lakes too which can be used to swim in. On the really hot days (We live up north)we can get free air conditioning at our local library. They always have a summer reading program which includes prizes for how much kids have read. This keeps them busy. They have activities through out the summer aswell- all free!! If your library doesn't maybe you can see if you can start one or join another local towns program. Where we live almost every town library has a summer reading program....oh and...we also have a VBS going on through our church which fills that week with VBS- they stay cool there too.

Hope that helps!

God bless! =)

I feel your pain, Nester. Here in the desert southwest we've begun our streak of 100+ degree days with no end in sight. We get out early in the morning while it's still tolerable and either stay in or find a pool later in the day!

Valarie Lea said...

We have a pool that I don't ever get to get in. Between work and softball tournaments, I just don't have the time. :(

Its a very sad situation. It taunts me everyday when I am cleaning the filter, "come on you know you want to do the Nestea plung", but no I have to go to work. Its enough to make someone want to cry.

IF I could post a picture in the comments I would show you the kiddy pool that was in our then gravel backyard last year, and the thermometer that the showed the water was 105 degrees in it! My daughter said it was really warm the baby jumped in then out, I touched it and though man that is hot, went to get my handy digital laser therometer and my camera of course, she sat in it the whole time, she was par-boiled by the time i got back....I will have to post the picture on my blog LOL. We sadly don't have pool or tree lined streets we live in Scottsdale, Arizona..We do however have a nice big Saguaro Catus in our frontyard!
Stay cool!

We love our above ground pool in the backyard. Today is our last day of school and I promised the kids (14 y, 9y and 6y) I would bring out the pool this weekend! Kids with big "normal" pools like to come play in our pool 'cause you can stand the whole time and play with barbies and action figures and even bring out the garden hose for an instant fountain! Happy summer memories - even though they are different each summer, it makes for whole collection of God's grace!

You know, on the rare days that it gets above 70 here in Minnesota, I find myself reveling in the "heat," so I can't help much with the staying cool thing. Remembering the summers of my childhood, I recall:

- Running through the sprinkler
- Hose and water balloon fights
- Slip 'n' Slide
- Friends' pools
- Going to the lake (after all, we've got more than 10,000 of them here)

Tina said...

We are lucky enough to have all kinds of pools and kiddie water parks in our neck of the woods. But most of the time, it's the backyard sprinkler baby! Popscicles, ice cream, lemonade. Texas can be brutal in the summer, so when it is just TOO hot, we go to museums, the library, etc... And I love to spend time/money in Target...

Water balloons is exactly what we did last weekend. It was a lot of fun. In our last house we had a pool in our back yard and my husband and daughter enjoyed it all summer. They get the prettiest tans. Not me though in the five years we lived there I think I got in the pool maybe 5 times. I never thought I'd miss it but now I wish I was living back there. Oh well maybe my next house will have a pool.

We started out with the cheapy Wal Mart pool too. Then a few years ago we bought a 20x30 above ground pool. We put a huge deck around it with large areas on both sides to lay out & BBQ. The above grounders are great, the kids can stand anywhere! Last year we bought a slide!! Anyway, the moral of the story is get a pool for the backyard, whatever you can afford. The family will use it everyday & that's all that really matters is that you use it & have fun.

We stay cool by living in Seattle, where it is 50 degrees and drizzly for the foreseeable future.

Usually we have nicer weather, this spring is just lame.

When it does get "hot" (80 or 85) we rely on a/c. We also have a kiddie pool and crazy sprinkler thing and a water table.

Nester... you are rich: in character. It takes much more character and self discipline to do what you are doing to be provide a better life for yourself and your family than it does to blow money on satisfaction for the moment only.

Find a free or inexpensive community pool and make days of it. Plan for it. That way you're not running back and forth or putting our a lot of effort to go for an hour. Or, get to be best friends with someone who has a pool. Offer to help with the maintenance in return for being allowed to use it.

You'll be blessed for living like no other. (We're working toward to the same goal as you, too.)

Well, I seem to have forgotten what we do when we get hot, seeing as we're STILL using our FURNACE.

Yes, it's June in this corner of the world, though I'm not entirely convinced. At least it's not snowing. It has done that before at this time of year. Petunias and tomato plants are so cute with frosting. Really. Especially when the frosting KILLS them.

Yes, I've been begging my husband to abandon his job and move us south...east. I don't relish living in the desert. I should move to Jacksonville and go to the beach with my aunt.

But, when it finally does get warm, my kids live in their underwear, or if I'm lucky, their bathing suits. We're practically nudists. Sometimes we go to the pool, but there aren't many around here--we're so redneck.

Redneck nudists would not be pretty. Try not to think about it.

I'm sorry you're missing your old place. It sounded lovely. I'd miss it too.

i also realize that there is always someone who's "living like no one else" is someone elses idea of dream living. i get that and hope you don't feel like i'm ungrateful! My husband has had the job teaching while I was raising 3 boys with him making $30,000. I know how hard that is.

i drove this morning to our nearest community pool and it is a 20 minute drive and too expensive for us but i know i didn't put that in my post. so we have no pool to go to. again, not the end of the world, i know.

i would LOVE to have a community pool to go to that was the entire point--not that I thought community pools are bad! I want one!!!!

As you know dear Nester, I live in the original land of rednecks, no such thing as a city pool, community pool or anything else resembling a cement pond available to the public! Hubby works out in the heat all day too and is exhausted by the time he finally gets home in the evenings. Our little summer ritual last year was soaking in a cool bath tub together. I'm so glad we kept the old tub years ago when we remodeled, lol Everyone thought we were crazy to keep a cast iron tub (sadly not a pretty clawfooted one) instead of replacing it with a fiberglass one piece thing but we knew what we were about, lol Even before I lost weight we still could fit, just barely! LOL It was nice to relax and unwind from our day spending that quiet time together cooling off.

I'm guessing sharing a cool water bath tub with three adorable boys isn't going to be practical for you! lol And with gas prices being what they are coupled with your personal goals for your family, I think you'd come out better off to purchase one of those Walmart pools that stand up as you fill them. I bet by the time you count wear and tear on your nerves and vehicle driving your adorable men folk to the community pool and having to deal with wet trunks on your car seats, etc, then factoring in the peace of mind of knowing exactly what is in the water (!!!) of your own pool, the convenience of having it outside the backdoor, not to mention the late night private swim party option you'd have with cutie patootie hubby... well I think the cost is more than offset.

Dear son's intended has one of those Walmart pools at her Mom's house and I've been anxiously awaiting the kids moving it up here to our house, I even bought a swim suit in anticipation (no small accomplishment for me). Maybe soon, maybe soon, fingers crossed! Until then I'll make do with the bath tub!

BTW - I read or heard somewhere Eva Longoria Parker say as kids they used the big metal thing that they watered their cows with as their pool !!!

Anonymous said...

Slip n' Slide. We go through 2 a summer. How sad.

And I let them play in the hose. They think it's a treat. Of course, we have a well.

In the evening on special days we turn the sprinklers on for them and they run around in their underware.

And to think,we actually live in a nice neighborhood...my neighbors must think we're white trash.

Look at it this way, at least you don't live in the Northeast where you can't justify air conditioning for the 3 weeks a year that it's 90.

thanks for all the free advice you share with us! we're moving this month and i can't wait to scour your site again and "mistreat" my new windows!!

Okay, I found your blog about a week or so ago. Since then I am a busy bee. Besides me and my aunt laughing hysterically at your posts, I am hanging "fake curtains" paintin an old church pew I was afraid to touch and on and on! I love your blog and silliness. Cause we are silly too!

God Bless~Kim

Oh, that's one of the reasons we don't move, even though I'm dying for a few acres in the woods. Out back we have a beautiful river and docks and boats and herons and ducks...and in our back yard a huge pool and hot tub. Oh well, trade-offs.

We just moved to SC from Michigan. The heat here is baffling us - we can't believe how hot it is! In Michigan there is a lake/beach every 10 feet, so we spent the summer swimming at the lake, always. Here - no lakes. Beaches? Not so much. (Well there's that Myrtle one, 2 hours away.....) We just bought one of those above ground easy set-up pools. Yes it's an eyesore, but it was cheap and I don't know how we'd survive these hundred degree temps without it! Maybe if we save our pennies we can get a real in ground pool installed next summer.....

Heehee. So funny. We have houses out front, but thankfully, a "green belt" and park behind. And a canal thingy. But we, too, are doing the Dave R. thing and living like no one else. Just think about all the fun we'll all be having in twenty years when everyone else is living off of social security and we're living the dream!! Keep it up, we're in it together!!

Absolutely right!!! Love that quote by Dave R. We took his course too...and how totally right he is!! :) Trust me...if you knew how small our house was and how much we have been working to redo it all....you would be thrilled with your home..LOL

Love your blog. I meant to comment on this a while back then got distracted by a 2 and 3 year old. Imagine that! I am so excited for you to take this chance and chronicle it for others who are making the same sacrifice! I am so sorry others have taken a chance to jab at you for sharing your heart. Please stay real. I am praying for you to get out of debt. I am praying for God to move in your life that just amazes you. I am praying for your boys to look back at this season and praise you when they are older and know what sacrifices you were willing to make. Every time I see I could make $45 an hour working, it is tough to stay home with our boys and our debt. Pray for us as we join together and become debt free.
THANKS for sharing!
Amanda
