Me still, sister of The Nester. I hope you aren't too disappointed. Mr. Nester took the computer to the Genius Squad or the Geek Bar or whatever they're called. I'm not sure the verdict yet, but she will keep us posted. So while you wait for the Mama Bird to return to the nest, I have been asked to guest blog here for the day. I happily accept and will try to be relevant.
This is our son's room. He just turned 2. My husband and I talked about how we wanted his room to look before he was born. Normally, the man isn't so involved in the decor of things, but we had twin girls first. So, you know, this was his chance.
Growing up, he collected baseball cards. He has lots of really cool ones so that is where we started. He picked some of his favorites and I framed them and hung them above the crib.
We also ordered some sepia toned photos on a poster website. Then I just found a cheap frame to make it look fancy.
One of my favorite parts of his room is the bumper pads. I think I'm going to make him use a crib until he is 12 because I like them so much.
I found the original ones at a yard sale several years ago for $20. They were covered in a pink plaid fabric and I wasn't sure I would ever have a use for them, as my girls already had crib bedding. But The Nester (who was with me) convinced me they were a steal because of how well-made they were. They could always be recovered.
I'm glad I bought them, because when I became pregnant again, The Nester went with me to the scary fabric store and helped me choose some patterns that I loved. Then, I had my friend who is way more talented than me recover them. If I were my sister, I would have figured a way to mistreat them with hot glue and a high heel shoe.
You may have noticed the trains in the middle of the floor. That is actually a train table top that we bought from a local toy store during their sidewalk clearance sale. It was their display table so all the parts are glued down, which actually works out because, well...our son is 2. He throws things. Which brings me to the most important detail in the room:
Behold: Emily and Rosie. The chic choo-choos with really great names.
So does anyone have a brilliant use for bumper pads when you no longer need a crib?

i love your son's room. that's the next thing i'm going to tackle, when i found out what i'm having, milo and the baby's room. they will be roommates. it needs new paint and a new look regardless of the gender.

You could use part of your bumpers to make cute cushions for a child-sized rocker, or chair cushions if your kids have a table & chair set.
Shortly after my son turned 2 I received an e-mail from PBK saying they were issuing a recall on his bumpers. I returned them and received my money back! Talk about timing!!
Still ready to see more of the Nesters home but Emily I love your little boys room. So cute! Now I want you and your sister to come decorate my home. Please, Please, Please.......

Beautiful bumper...you are lucky that you can still use yours with a two-year-old boy. I always have to take mine out around 10 months since my babies like to use theirs as a stepping stool to heave themselves out of the crib. It never happened...but it did come close.
Love the personal touch with your husband's baseball cards.
How about some type of cornice board for the window or some type of tufted headboard for his "big boy" bed.

Love your son's room. The baseball cards are a fantastic idea! My husband has a rather large collection from his youth and would just LOVE this idea! I'm going to share it with him.
I'll be interested in the bumper ideas that you get today. My almost 2-year old is REALLY attached to his bumper. Actually, he's attached to the silky tag on him bumper. He holds onto it all night. I'm trying to figure out what to do when he comes out of the crib and can't use the bumper anymore.
I am so jealous your 2 year old will sleep in a crib! Mine began doing back flips out of her crib when she was 16 months old. And now with a toddler bed she wanders into our room in the middle of the night...
I actually cut up the bumper pads into strips of fabric and made one of those wall boas the nester taught us to make....
but that was only after asking my husband if he was SURE he didn't want anymore children and he replied, "if you say that again, I'm not coming home tonight..." lol

Can anyone guess the room color? It is a nester color: Tobacco Road, of course! I have that color all over my house. It is a Duron old formula color. The Nester did a post about it back in February:

Oh the trains! I do love them! They are one of two things I saved from my older son, well because there was a fortune tied up in them and my grandchildren will play with them and by golly thier kids! The other was an awesome set of wooden blocks! Never knew I would have my little "Maxident" as we like to call him but I am so over joyed to hear the words choo choo out of his sweet little mouth and hear the whistles and clicky clack on the vidoes. I never knew I missed Thomas and his friends!
I did glue down the track to our table but his boy managed to pull it up and break some pieces right in half!
Love the room, my older son is a baseball freak! His room is covered with anything baseball!

uor son's room is perfect, love the color and the pictures. they can still be in his room when he's a teen. might seem far off now, but don't blink! it'll happen sooner than you think!
You could take concrete column forms, the round ones, and have them cut down to the width of your bumper. Have one disc of plywood cut to fit in the inside circumference of the bottom of the form secure with staples and glue. Next, have one piece that is wider than the form by two inches cut. Then cut a circular channel in the top piece that is wider than the form so that it fits on the top as a lid. Cover the outside of the form with the bumper by wrapping around and gluing into place, accent with some great coordinating fringe. Take the top of your STORAGE OTTOMAN (oh, so that is what she is getting at) and have a piece of dense upholstery foam cut to fit the top, tack it down with a little spray adhesive, staple a sheet of quilting polyfill around the top on the underside, carefully paying attention to not cover your channel. Find a really great coordinating faux-leather suede or microfiber (a fabric that can grow with your son) and cover the top, make sure to add fringe and secure with upholstery tacks for added maturity. Remember not to cover the channel or the top rim of the form with fabric or you make not have a tight seat.
There you have it, an hours worth of labor max and a really great reuse of a beloved bumper…and can one really put a price on hidden storage in a child’s room. He could use it for trains, cars, his ball and glove, etc.
PS, remember Home Depot or Lowes will cut lumber for you to save you time, effort and precision.
OOOPS, I added punctuation for clarity. You wouldn't want the channel wider than your form. you want ti the exact cirfumference of your form.
Then cut a circular channel in the top (((piece that is wider than the form))) so that it fits on the top as a lid.

I was such a paranoid parent that we promptly took our bumper pads out of our newborn's crib because I was just sure they were evil monsters intent on suffocating my baby. It was just as well since he only lasted in his crib for 18 months before learning to climb out...the very next night he slept in a toddler bed. I'm amazed he never got out to "explore" while Mommy and Daddy were asleep.
Now we're just trying to convince him the best color for his walls is NOT camo!
I don't use the bumpers on my babies crib- I just made a cornice out of them. It turned out really nice- everyone thinks I had them professionally made. Just an idea! And, super easy!
cOuld you use the bumper pads as bolster pillows? I think that is what they are called. You know those long throw pillow things that people put on there beds. Or they could be used as a small body pillow.

I have a great idea. I did this for all my kids. I took the bumper pads and crib skirts and made a quilt. I used the curtains as well. I have the quilts on the edge of their beds. Now they will have a keep sake from their nursery.

Oh, I am so illegally checking you two out today during the 'daylight' (told the kids I was "looking for a yummy strawberry pie recipe" ... I'll get to that. FIRST: LOVE THE BASEBALL CARDS idea! My husband has kajillions of these in the basement in a box. How perfect is this idea?!?!
Now, I NEED ideas for pretty organization in the bathroom. And I don't have any counter space in either of mine to do the cool white dishes idea that The Nester shared a while back. Got anything else? Cool containers to sit on shelves, maybe...but how? ...or what else?

Your two year old is sooo not like my 2 year old. We had to move the monkey out of the crib at 20 months because he found it incredibly fun to climb up onto the edge, then fling himself backwards off the edge onto the floor. If my son was left alone for 2 minutes in your son's room, he would have the metal star pulled off the wall and would poking it in his eye, and he would hang from the framed baseball cards until he ripped them off the walls, and they came smashing down to the floor (he's just fun that way). :) Adorable room, and color me jealous that your two year old is not as destructive as mine. :)

I love what you did with the baseball cards. Awesome way to use them and recycle them in the family. Also, I love your paint, I painted my son's room that color at our last house and did a vintage airplane theme that got lots of ooos and ahhhhs.
I do have a question though about your hardwood flooring. We are leaning towards tearing all our carpet out and going with all hard flooring. Tired of the carpet stains and wear....do you have any thumbs up or thumbs down advice about going carpetless...do you love it or hate it?

I didn't read all the comments so maybe someone already said this, but my kids were attached to their blankies for so long that we needed several. Since the bumper was "familiar" to my daughter, I mistreated it and made it into a "take-along" blankie for her toddler years. She was thrilled to have it because it matched her crib blanket that she was used to having just smaller this time. =0)

Funny thing, when I first read the name of your post, I thought it said, The Power STRIP Continues...and I thought...OH MY!! She really IS getting BOLD AND BRAVE! :-) Then, I had a good laugh in my office, all by myself and felt horrible for even thinking such a thing...not really. :-)

And for you, thethingswesay - This is the first house where we have had hardwoods in the bedrooms and I have to say, though they are beautiful, I miss the carpet. The good thing is you can get a big rug and have the pretty hardwoods showing around the edges. I guess that's the best of both worlds.
What a sweet room! I mean, handsome and boyish. I have always thought I would like to save our crib mattress, since it is waterproof, to make a swing or daybed to use outside. I wonder if bumper pads could be used in something like that?

I would say that you sell them back to a 2nd hand baby consignment store so someone else will see how great they are made and buy them with the thoughts of recovering them in pink :)!

I love the Nester swap! I bought a kit from her last month to go with the two pink ones I made for my girls rooms. I totally hear you about wanting one in every room, I wish I could convince my husband we need one in every room, some how he doesn't see the 'purpose'. Like it needs one!!
