What I'm Keeping

Here's that keeping room I told you about. This is the view from the kitchen. I love this room. I think it's supposed to be the dining room. But then what would I do with this big empty space in my kitchen? Plus, it sounds so fancy to call it a keeping room.

We have a sofa and a chair and it's just a sweet little sitting area. The sun shines in really warm in the mornings. I love that part too.

I'm not gonna paint any walls here. How do you like my white plates on white walls? It wouldn't be my first choice but, it's somewhat soothing. And, it's paid for, that's extremely soothing. Remember that iron thing in the middle? Yard sale last year $1.

Above is a wooden file cabinet I found at the Goodwill last year. Down below is one handle for it that I fell in love with at Hobby Lobby. Maybe I can find it's mate at my sister's Hobby Lobby while I'm visiting her TODAY!!

Our computer stays here too. This is actually the borrowed computer. Abraham Lincoln's computer. Don't let that hard, shiny, white outer shell fool you, it's old, outdated and totally uncool. And have I mentioned slow? But it's still a zillion times better than no computer.

Remember the sexy back hutch project? Still love it. And my hot glue survived the move--no touch ups needed!

Black pillow from the Goodwill. Scratches on my much loved so very versatile chair.

And there's that light that we still haven't hung.

Am I boring you with this yet? Maybe tomorrow we can see what Em and I did together! See you then!

Oooh I am first. I just love the black and white all over. How do you feel about chocolate brown? That seems to be all over my house.

Love how the house has come together. I am in love with your light that you haven't hung up yet. I am obsessed with vintage bamboo these days. Have fun with Emily!!

I like looking at all the little things...like the small black urn you used to put your pens in on your desk. You are so creative and I just love your style! :) It's inspiring me to love my house and make it my own too!

You never cease to amaze me. You fixed up your house already and made it into a lovely home. Here I am, living in the same house for more than 6 years and I have barely made a dent in it!
But surely and slowly, I am makin' my house into a home! Thanks to you and your mistreatments!

A keeping room. I don't think I've ever heard that term before. It is a real term or one you made up? I want to hear the story behind it! Very cool.

Love your finds and pictures and what you do. Love it, love it, love it. Darcy turned me on to your website and I really enjoy it.

Thanks for my tassle, I love it!

Love your "keeping room". I'm going to use that. Your house is gorgeous. I love your style!

The keeping room, where servants in my parents antebellum type home were supervising the littles between seatings for meals and chores..in a 7K sft home you see, you needed to remain near a fireplace but servants were not to be seen when company arrived except to serve... the kitchen was often the warmest place in the home, so small children were "kept" there by the kitchen by the servants and woman of the home when she wasn't greeting.. where it was warm and not drafty.....usually a comfortable place where they could toddle and play with a comfortable old piece of furniture and nursing chair...a place for older ladies to do hand work later in life...LOVE the keeping room, grew up in one!(however, we WERE the servants in my parents home! :) )

Looks beautiful! I totally want to do the framed chalkboard thing. And I have a black hutch that might get a makeover now too. Thanks!!!

Still enjoying the tour of your home. Yes, "Keeping Room" does sound fancy...sounds like something they would have called a room in a Southern Antebellum home.

Have fun visiting your sister :)

oh...the keeping room. I love it, and i have one of those, but we call it the sitting room. Unfortunately, it's where I hide all my clutter when the guests come...in little corners... behind the piano... and then shut the glass French doors. hee hee So, maybe I should really call ours the "keeping room" because it is keeping way too much of my stuff (you know I am working on that:)

Ok, how do you DO it? You have a black & white large scroll print pillow and then a smaller blue pillow with dots and brown trim. Together on the same chair. And it looks good! Mine would look like it was waiting on it's real home.

I love how your entire house has the same "feeling" and style throughout. No theme rooms at the nester's house!

Oh, I would NEVER leave your Keeping Room. It would "keep" me there forever. Lol.

Bored? Definately not! I love the wooden file cabinet - the handle is just perfect.

Have fun today!

If I had a keeping room, it would soon become the "keeping-everything- never-throw-anything-away-just-
in-case-dumping-room" and that could be the end of an harmonious marriage - I could never keep such a room so beautiful and uncluttered!

I can but dream though.....

Thanks for the inspiration/aspiration.

I love your home. I have very similar taste and I like your less is more approach. I also love your 'keeping room.'

If I ever visited, I would move into that room. And that could be a problem.

Beautiful! I love your keeping room & the view of it from your dining area in the kitchen. So pretty, warm & welcoming. Betcha' just love sitting with your cup of coffee in the morning with the sun shining in!

That's a beautiful handle!! I hope you find a mate for it. I, too, love the idea of a keeping room. Your's seems very cozy. Have fun with your sister!

I raise my mixed berry toaster strudel to you Nester (which ever way South is from where I am sitting)! Because your house doesn't look like you just moved a month ago! Amazing.

Also, I am absolutely enthralled with your bird cage, the one on the kitchen table. Did you find that at Hobby Lobby? With my luck, you probably found it at a yard sale in the free box. :-)

Julia @ Hooked on Houses said...

I enjoyed reading the definition of a "keeping room" by She's So There. I had never heard that. Who says blogs aren't educational? :-)

Your room turned out great. It looks like it'll be used much more this way than if it remained a dining room. -Julia

As always, you have done a masterful job of nesting your lovely home!

I had a thought, as I read again that you don't plan to paint in this house...why not "mistreat" a wall or two? I'm thinking you could get out that trusty staple gun and stretch out some pretty, inexpensive fabric and staple it to the wall at the top and bottom. Might be cute for a focal wall...like behind those white plates. Just a thought...

Hello! Just found your site and I love your style!

I really like your black pieces of furniture. Our dressers came from yardsales/Goodwill - but I think that with some black paint they could be nice.

Here is my question - do you have any recommendations for painting furniture black? Brush or spraypaint? What kind of paint? Flat or semigloss? I really know nothing about this - but would like to give it a try!

And I put up the pictures of my furniture at your request! Now you'll have to help me name it :)

Sorry to gush here, but I just have to tell you what a down to earth inspiration you are. I just moved into a new house too, and (because of your example) I keep fighting the urge to go out and spend money (that I really can't be spending) to decorate it. Instead I've been "shopping" around my own house and repurposing things.

Thinking "Hmmm, what would the Nester do?" literally saved me $30 on a shopping trip to Target last weekend (I was going to buy an unecessary curtain rod).

Thanks girlie! Keep up the good nesting.

I think your new house is SO pretty! I'm really liking the white walls, but I'm partial to them in my own home. The good thing about your furniture and decor style is that it goes with any wall color. And... you can always paint later.

I mentioned you today in a post! :)

Thanks!

Oh wow, your house has beautiful moldings! Did you install them? I have a post that I would love to do moldings on just like the ones you showed. And that room is TDF!

Tracey said...

I love the Jeff Gordon drawing on the chalkboard, which one of your cute boys did that?

And that Yellow and Blue toile chair is just what I need for my kitchen. We are in the middle of a very slow kitchen makeover that started when you showed us your sisters black painted cabinets. Mr. Incredible finished the cabinets a few months ago and I think it wore him out so we are on a break from the kitchen redo.

And aren't you smart tucking all those cords in that black bin under your computer table.

Can't wait to see what you and Emily got into!
