The $200 Master Bedroom

Want a room like this? Me too. Most of us tend to neglect the master bedroom. It's usually hidden away where the public won't see it. But you know, it should be your haven. If you are married, I know you long to have a pretty room for you and your man to escape to. But, what if you don't have the money to invest in all new furniture right now? What if you only have a mattress and a box spring? Can you still have a pretty bedroom?

Yes!

The Bed
Let's look at this room starting with the bed. What if you wrap your box spring in a crisp white sheet, put a bed skirt on it or wrap it in fabric? Yes, while it's on the floor. If you want to raise the bed off the floor a bit, you could attach 4 wooden feet into the bottom {found in the unfinished wood section at Lowes and Home Depot} this would lift it off the floor about as much as the bed above for about $10. I know you are all gonna ask me about these feet. Ask the worker at the store about where the furniture feet and legs are.

For the headboard, get you a door and paint it white if you want this look. There are no rules on what color to use. If you are renting and cannot paint your walls you might want some color on your headboard, try a wheat color or a spa blue or what about chocolate brown? Want a free door? Read this post to see how I've found doors before. I would just lean it up against the wall between the mattress and the wall. Hollow, flat doors should be less than $30 if you want to buy one new.
The Bedding
Now, the key to this look is bold color contrasted with the crisp white. If you paint your headboard a color you might want to consider crisp white bedding and a white down comforter. You don't have to go as modern as this, but try some color on the bed if your headboard is white. Maybe you have some bedding already. If not, start saving your pennies. Ask for a new comforter for Christmas. I like Target, TJMaxx and Marshalls for inexpensive yet, beautiful bedding. Get the good sheets. I would rather sleep on a mattress on the floor with great sheets than in a bed in a frame with sheets that feel like sandpaper.

The Walls

For the rest of the room--look above the bed. See all of those white frames? What makes those work? All the different sizes and different shapes in the same color! If you go for a white headboard, then get you all sorts of frames from the goodwill, dollar store, yard sales or your garage {we both know you have some frames somewhere that you can use} and spray paint them. Don't worry about hanging them just so. Look how great these look simply grouped together. They have leaves in these. You could do photos or vintage keys or buttons or fabric or scrapbook paper or anything that you have on hand. There is no wrong.

The Bedside
Lastly, you need you a table and a lamp. Yes, I said need. The table can be any kind of table. Paint it the same color as your headboard and frames. The lamp is so important too. First, overhead light is so harsh and I know you want to look pretty in your bedroom. Secondly, you can read and turn off the light without getting out of bed. Lazy woman's dream. I am always shocked at how many people do not use lamps. Don't even turn that overhead light on unless you lose a contact or something.

The Extra Item that I Love to Have In the Bedroom

I always try to have a chair in the bedroom as well. Shop the house, I bet you have one someplace. It can even be a wooden chair with a pillow on it. Get you some candles and you are finished.

The Breakdown

Door: Free
Legs: $15
Box spring extra sheet or skirt or just wrap some fabric around it: $20 or less
Table: $10 yard sale {I promise you can find tables for $10 I have 3 in my house}
Lamp: $15 {garden ridge, shop the house, Goodwill {do you know you can spray paint a lamp?}}
Bedding: $100 {I know some of you can get this for even less!}
Frames : $10 {use something you have to fill them}
Candles: $5
Paint: $25 {you can use the same color for everything!}

Grand total: $200

If you want to buy just the frame --you don't even have to have a box spring! Check this out!

I love this post!! I was actually just laying in bed reading, thinking how bland our room was. Which my husband thinks is great; he is begging me not to paint the furniture. He knows me well, I think if it was painted I would enjoy it so much more. Hhhmmm, I am going to have to think about this one! Thanks for the motivation.

*loving the post* I have one thing to add though.... appearantly, it's a feng shui rule that IF you are married, you should absolutely have TWO bedside tables, as to keep the room balanced..

Just a thought ;)

I love this post, I'm trying to make our bedroom back into a couple's room, rather than the family dumping ground! Thanks for giving me something to think about.

I love this room! We just moved two months ago and while we have a bed with a frame and a dresser, we don't have anything else. It's my mission to make it feel a little more homey. Thanks for the ideas!

This is a great tutorial. One of the best things I did a few months ago was decorate our master bedroom. Up to that point it had been a catch all for everything, but now it's my favorite room of the house, such a peaceful haven.

Family's Dumping Ground... that's exactly what my bedroom is. When I go to sleep at night I have to pick all the books and toys out of my bed. I totally agree that this is do able on this small of a budget. Really, I think the $200 is generous.

The biggest problem for me is CLUTTER. I live in a tiny house and my room is the catch all.

I don't care for the room shown. Your bedroom is much prettier!

We have a nice bedroom. Because we feel the same way - it IS your haven. Also, our master can be seen off the great room! LOL So it needs to look good.

ps - right now,I have THREE chairs in our bedroom! Thinking of moving one out though . . . .

Love it...and if your back wall has enough contrast you could even leave the frames EMPTY!
I have personally found all but one of my bedroom pics (Irises) at yard sales or for under $2 for the 'print' at dollar stores and whatnot.
My 'side table' is my mothers 'sewing machine'. I hated to get rid of it, but didn't want to keep dragging the heavy thign around. SO I removed the sewing machine. Painted it all white and now I have a bed side table and it has the cool storage areas, too!
If floor space is at a minimum I have also seen simple shelves hanging from the wall as bedside tables. No floor space used!
You inspire me to always be thinking! Thanks

This inspiration bedroom, is of course, gorgeous. I love the way you give a breakdown on how to replicate it for cheap and how to make it reflect our personal style. Love it!

My bedroom is my dread!!! We live in a small house and my husband is a collector of books,and Cd's he also has 3 guitars. I dont want any of this in the rest of the house so I have given up our room so it has never been "pretty" with the exception of a bedspread and nice dresser. He complains its not decorated like the rest of the house but who cares when its loaded down with all his garbage!!! Ok, Im venting....lol...I could certainly, add a pretty, clean beadboard and some nice lamps on the side. Your picture did inspire...as always. I may also plead with him to purge some of his "stuff" if he wants a nicely decorated bedroom...I know I do

Love the room...I did something similar by having the guy at Home Depot cut some MDF board for me. Then I wrapped it in an eggcrate cushion & burlap fabric...and stapled it down. Then just set it between the wall & my bed. Now if I could just get the piles of laundry out!

Yep - I know the Master Bedroom is supposed to be your haven...your little get away from the stresses of life where you can relax and put your hair down. Well, I do put my hair down there..literally...does that count?
I even have a coach in our master, but it's the laundry folding spot...ugh! I know, I know....haven, for my honey.

We just moved our 5th baby out of our room and I am taking it back!!! I was in the process of trying to make it a special place when I got pregnant so I am looking forward to getting things back to a state of calm and quiet. You have some great ideas, thanks. Oh and by the way I have seen the furnature feet at Target too.

I love your blog!!! I updated our bedroom last year for cheap... I was really tired of my comforter set (so 90's!!) and we aren't ready to invest in something new. The comforter is a pretty floral in rich golds, burgundy, and mauve. It was supposed to be "reversible" to a cream, but that side looks worn around the edges, so that wasn't an option. SO, I bought a cheap sheet set in burgundy. The fitted sheet went on my box springs -- sleeker than a bedskirt! Then I took the flat sheet and put it ON TOP of my bed, over the other bedding (sheets and a thin quilt). It looks like I have a new duvet! At the foot of the bed, I have my old comforter folded down, like in this photo, with the cream side showing. Instant update for about $30!! It has really made a difference and helps me to live with what I have for a bit longer! blessings, Terri

What I like about it:
the cost :)
the whiteness
the frames (although with that great grasscloth backdrop, you could easily leave them empty. I have several empty frames I use for my kids artwork. Just pushpinned in the middle of a large frame.)

What I don't care for:
-the modern-ness (doesn't look inviting)
-the white covered books - They're beautiful on their own
-Some baby blue or aqua accents would've been nice with the brown

loving your blog ~

I have 3 old wooden doors in my basement right now, one of which is waiting to be made into my headboard. We just moved into a new house, and I'm afraid the master bedroom is low on the priority list.

I need a little inspiration for the bedroom. It's in the middle of being redecorated and looks like a hodge-podge of styles and colors. I need to focus on getting it done but keep getting distracted by other house projects.

Wanted to stop by and invite you to my new blog home, Nester! I moved to a self-hosted site over the weekend (it's now www.hookedonhouses.net).

If you don't mind updating my link in your blogroll, I'd appreciate it. I'm giving away an Amazon gift certificate to thank the bloggers who add my new link by Friday.

Thanks for being such a good blog friend!! -Julia :-)

excellent ideas and frugal, which always makes me happy. Our bedroom is such a hodge-podge of random things. I long for the day it looks more put together, like that room. Eventually, I'll get it done. Thanks for the fab tips!

Wow! Our master bed is seriously neglected, and we have $4000 in furniture in there. It's gorgeous bones.

This bedroom is beautiful! I made sure when we got out house and were buying furniture that our room was one of the top priorities : ) There is too much stress everywhere else. I wanted beauty in our bedroom. I don't know what color to paint the walls though. Do you want to come over and give me some advice : )?

I needed to read this today! For three years, we havent had a headboard. I just don't know what to do with a king sized bed. I have all the other "stuff"-side tables, dressers, and lamps-but not a headboard. I love the idea of a door-but would it fit a king?

YEa!!!! Fun stuff. I'm using this approach with another little room in my house - so needed to hear/see it. Also, so so so asking for new bedding for birthday AND Christmas. (i like a lot of pillows)

This is TRUE. I just redid my dinning room (did a four post series) for about 100 bucks. Easy to do and fun.

Had to do it because my dog whizzed all over my beloved curtains, but hey, any excuse to decorate. Am I right ladies :)
Many Blessings :)

Again. You are awesome. Wouldn't it also work to cover the door with batting and fabric to make it softer? Even tuft it. (I always conk my head.) (I'm blaming that on my ability to be halfway creative--think up ideas but not know how to make them work.) Off to flirt with the Home Depot guy. (please let it not be a she-man)
