- Not making the master bedroom a priority.
- Not getting rid of stuff that I don't really need or love.
- Being afraid of color.
- Buying something trendy instead of more traditional {remember those over stuffed chairs from the 90's?} I had two of them. It was like parking a Volkswagen in my living room--I mean TWO Volkswagens.
- Not buying that thing that I loved because I wasn't exactly sure where I would use it.
- Fear of pattern.
- Worrying that someone will think I did it wrong.
- Not hanging a painted azure blue door sideways on a wall because someone will think I'm insane.
- Not decorating for OUR family. I finally broke down and kept a tiny blue kid's kitchen and miniature table and chairs in our kitchen for our boys to play restaurant--it was there for years and was wonderful! Now I miss it.
- Thinking I can't have pretty stuff because I have three boys.
What's on your list?

Lots on my list echoes yours - mostly not decorating for our family, and someone thinking I did it wrong. I've spent way to much time over the years worrying about what someone would think when they walked in my door.
Yes!! I was first!!!!
Wooohooooo, I'm first!
Thinking I have to omany candles.
You can NEVER have enough candles. AND you MUST light them all. Unlit candles are not as pretty as lit ones. :)

I wasn't first...

One of my biggest mistake with decorating is letting a contractor talk me into things when I knew deep down that was not what I wanted!
sandy toe
Y'all are cracking me up with the first! I LOVE it! I think I'm gonna comment on my own post tomorrow so I can be first!
@ Sandy Toe {s}
YES!!! Letting the contractor decide things against what you want! Good one!
Hey, you DID hang a big blue door sideways on a wall! But that's not why I think you're insane...
My mistake currently is similar to Lisa's. I love red in various shades and have it everywhere. Also have golden yellow and green. I sure would like to mix in some of that blue like you have on your amazing door but am stumped about how to do it.
I just can't get over how you always manage to really speak to the heart. I am taking your thoughts with me today.
I right there with you on #4 and 10. Plus I waited much too long to finally paint a room red, I have one now. =}
One of my biggest issues is mixing styles. I can't say I love just one. I love the clean lines, but I also have a (clean) country flare about me (you know the flowers and checks). Since I don't know how to pull that all off, nothing gets done and then I am without. :o)
Sincerely ~ Tricia Anne
I think my biggest mistake has been not waiting to find just the right thing (furniture, drapes, etc) and buying something to "make do" and not liking it.
Patience really is a virtue...
Displaying ugly things because someone bought it for me and I didn't want to hurt their feelings...though the people who bought the things were distant relatives or church members who came to my wedding and never once, in 15 years of marriage, ever, ever came into my home.
It took me 10 years of marriage to figure that out.
Sandy
Amen sister! I agree with your list. I also tend to question myself way too much while I'm redoing a room, "Did I choose the right wall color? Oh no, this is going to look horrible. Maybe I should start over." You know what I mean? The thing is, if I stick with it it always turns out to be something I love.
Listening to men who don't live in my house.
Hanging my curtains too low.
Using filler, tolerable decor rather than minimal lovely decor.
We bought red couches. Everyone in the decorating world says get neutral couches. I didn't want neutral couches. I didn't care if that was "the rule." So we got red couches. And you know what? We love them! However, every now and then I wonder if I should have gone neutral. Oh well, too late. I still love my red couches!
I also have a hard time mixing styles. I don't like just one style, I like lots of them. But I feel like when I mix them, my house looks hodge-podgey or like someone's garage sale. I love a mix of styles when I see them, but I just feel like I can't get it "right."
I am also "afraid" of displays in that I don't want a surface to look cluttered, and I hate dusting, so I don't want to make more work for myself. :)
Why is it a big deal to be "first?" I see that on blogs a lot and just don't get it...? :)
After 15 years of living in this house and 25 years of marriage my list is as follows:
1. Decorating for resale value. We will never move from this house. I know that because I can't bear packing it and there is no place I like more. I don't know why I feel like the decor needs to be "buyer friendly".
2. Feeling trapped into utilizing rooms as the builder planned instead of how our family lives. I did finally turn the never used dining room into the music room and the never used living room into the dining room.
3. I get stuck with furniture placement. I also have a few of those "volkswagon bug" chairs and they are impossible to use. They pretty much just move in and stay in the same spot until they go out on the driveway in a mass garage sale.
4. Trying to display all my loves at once. Just makes me crazy and feels junkified.
5. Loving a style that is no longer "popular" and not having the confidence to "just love it". It is not going to make my friends like me less if I love it and have a bedroom with pine furnishings.
6. Listening to my husband who has NO style whatsoever.
7. Being afraid to paint all my builder medium oak trim, window frames, cabinets, vanities, and furniture. UGH.
8. Refer back to #1. This is a huge mental block for me.
9. Collections, collections, collections. I love them all and can't bear to part with any. This could be the same as #4.
10. Wanting it all done at once and being overwhelmed that it is a process.

Oh my. My biggest mistake was thinking that PLAID bedroom walls would be "interesting." We measured and painted and painted and measured....in soft greens and pinks and oysters....and HATED it. Like living in a candy box. Ewwww.
I completely agree with the last one! I have 4 boys and finally decided to have beautiful things around me and simply teach the boys how to appreciate and take care of them!
Well, it's obvious isn't it? You taught me (the perfectionist) that it doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful. That allows me the freedom to love what I have even if I see its flaws.
1) Feeling like my home can never be as good as those who have way more money to spend on theirs.
2) Thinking I had to use furniture pieces as intended. I finally broke out of this and now have dressers everywhere - 3 downstairs serving as entry tables, buffets, sideboards. Lots of storage downstairs - so important for a bigger family living in a modestly sized home! Especially when the entire downstairs is the "schoolroom." :)
3) Making my master bedroom too "girly." Next time I redo it will definitely get more of DH's input. It should be his sanctuary too.
1. Not making the master bedroom a priority. (But this going to be fixed in April.)
2. Not hanging family photos on the wall, because waiting for the "right" moment. This too, is going to be remedied next month.
3. Not creating a little space to call my own. I don't know when this can be remedied, but all I know is--mama needs a little corner of the house for her own little creations & inspirations.
This was a fantastic list-post, by the way. What a great way to give us all a big kick in the pants and say, "Just do it if it makes you happy!" ; )
Trying to "force" something that just doesn't go with my decor, because I loved it in someone else's home. Also, giving a "hoot" what Mom would think. Love her dearly, and with all my heart, but we just have different tastes altogether.
Was that really your dad?? That's hillarious!!!!
My biggest dilema right now has been starting on a room or an area and working so darn hard on it for so long and then not getting it finished. I'm VERY excited that I've done pretty well on my entry and hallway project I've been working on...I MADE myself finish the painting before we went to bed and I'm so happy that I did. All I need to do now is finish the painting (I ran out of my paint) on my chair rail and then comes the accessorizing...woo hoo for that!!
too worried about everything meshing just perfectly from one room to the next -
designer's mind...I am my worst critic!
Wait... I have 2 boys and a baby on the way... I can have pretty things? Really? Are you sure I shouldn't wait 10 years?
Are you kidding me? I have barely decorated out of fear. Then I started blogging and found all these wonderful blogs about being insane decorating.
Now I am making all kinds of "mistakes" and I'm lovin' it! :-)
I can so relate to your #'s 1, 5, and 7!! I leave the MBR to be decorated until we get ready to sell, then I start worrying about the way it looks...why do we do that?!! My other difficult area is accessorizing...don't know how to display smaller items to look good without looking like clutter! You are very good at display...I know good when I see it, just can't always mimic it!!
My thoughts exactly!! We have been married for almost 17 years and I always decorated with the thoughts, "what if my mother-in-law doesn't like it?"!! What?!?! In the last 3 yrs. I finally decided to do what works for me and our family and the color wheel has exploded! I'm not sure if my MIL likes it, but the overwhelming comments from friends and family when they come over easily overrides any negativity...it's OUR home and now it feels like it :)
Navy Blue walls in my kitchen. never suggest to a husband that you might like the kitchen painted right before he has a week of vacation. I was thinking one accent wall in Navy (back in the mid 90's) I come home from work to the smell of oil based paint. He had not only painted every wall in the kitchen but it was a high gloss paint! bleck
I want to expand on decorating for your family by saying including themin your buying choices.
When you look around there's very little purchases that didn't include the family vote.
I've made the same mistakes too. One of the other mistakes is thinking your rooms need to look like their out of some home decorating magazines. I'm gong to get started on our bedroom today! Thanks for the inspiration. And I love, love, and love the picture on your post today. Have a great day!
Julia
Wow, people really get excited about being the first to comment. :)
I am especially guilty of #1 and #10 on your list.
My biggest mistake is buying something because of function and affordability, instead of waiting a bit longer and saving up for something I really love.
Mine is pretty similar except since we've moved about 6 times now, each place didn't feel the same with the same decor I have and it would drive me up the wall! LOL
Let's see if I can keep the list to 10...
- waiting until I had every single detail before even starting a space
- thinking I had to go to design school to be a good designer. (Don't get me wrong here...I did go to school for design, but I was a good designer before that and just had no confidence that I knew what would work for me, much less anyone else. I'm not knocking professional designers at all. Heck, I used to be one!)
- thinking I had to follow some picture in a magazine or website to a T in order to get it right.
- not trusting my instincts on what would make a space truly mine
- searching for others approval for what I truly loved.
- settling for items/rooms instead of waiting and searching for what I really loved
I could go on and on. So glad you posted this!
I may not be first, but I love that blue (excuse me...azure) door on the wall!
See, I really struggle with that last one: not having pretty things b/c I have boys. Or b/c I have lots of little people in general. We're seriously out numbered by the preschool crowd (five kids five and under) and my only way of coping is to insist that they clean up everynight so we at least have a few minutes of grown-up space. and if I put any nice furniture in the living room, Murphy's Law says they WILL throw up on it.
My dilemma is constant.
I guess the biggest one for me would be waiting for a big load of money to fall from the sky before doing anything to bring beauty to our home. I'm finally learning that you can't buy your way to a more peaceful and inviting home. That it can be crafted and built one small piece at a time and for not much money either!
Also trying to get over the fear of doing something wrong. We've been going back and forth for awhile about moving our family room to the living room (which is at the front off the foyer). It would be better for us, but worry about that being wrong from some sort of design/layout standpoint has kept us from making the change.
I need to keep some of the things you mentioned in mind. I just now finished my master bedroom. I should have done it ages ago. I would have been much happier had I done it.
Not making the house "ours". Not doing what we would enjoy because we "might" sell it someday. Keeping a beautiful, custom made red with black/cream check window "treatment" (no "mis" before the "treatment") from the previous owner. Yes, she spent a fortune on it, yes, it's gorgeous, but no, I'm just not a red person. So now it's taken down, the window is now "untreated", but I know exactly what I want to do - a wonderful "mistreatment" in a robin's egg blue. Thanks for giving me the courage to go with what I love!

1. Waiting until it is "just right" to enjoy and entertain in your home.
2. Thinking it will ever be "finished"--that's part of the joy of it!
I am with Lisa-I always wait thinking I am gonna find the perfect thing-that could take forever!
Listening to anything someone else says! Just do what YOU want!
(that....and decorate in odd numbers)
All of your posts like this speak right to me!
So many of us are learning as we go, aren't we? I think the biggest mistakes I've made are not going with my gut and waiting for money to grow on trees-instead of just working with what I have.
Also, I'm letting go of the thought that it has to be perfect, I'm so glad I'm not the only recovering perfectionist out there!
Now that I'm learning to walk in some freedom there I'm enjoying my home so much more!
Cute post. Lots of good reminders. Thanks!
I'll have to give my list some thought, but I have to tell you I clicked on the picture of your living room to get a better look and I LOVE what you've done there. It's so inviting.
Thank you for reminding me. We are in the middle of a house build. We decided it would absolutely be for our family. We have heard:
1) you HAVE to have a formal livingroom
2) this place will have no resale value
3) with a kitchen that big you NEED granite counters
4) this place will never sell
The comments have mostly been from real estate people(men) or appraisers (men) who only look at a house as an investment to sell.We will live here until we die... AND it will be a place of love and comfort for our entire extended family.
Love this.
Mine
1. Listening to hubby about painting 'my' new kitchen a light colour. Need him to go away for a few days so that I can re-paint.
2. Being afraid of choosing colours. Thanks Nester for letting me know that it's O.K. to re-paint.
3. Waiting for hubby to help me paint / redecorate. If I want it done I need to do it now, myself.
Thanks.
Not making the Master BR a priority is my #1! Now that we have done it, I can't believe we didn't do it earlier! Any splurges in that room were soooo worth it!
Yeah! I love this post. When I first moved to my current house, 5 years ago, we chose to paint the living room walls a deep burgundy, which matched a minor color in our furniture. I have always loved it, but one particular friend of mine always says, "If you want to sell this house some day, you're going to have to paint that room." Grrr! We've actually had our house on the market, and everyone who saw our color choices said they loved them. So there!
And I agree with you about patterns, too - I love differing patterns in the same color scheme, but my husband just thinks I'm blind when I gravitate toward a design like that!
I'm not even gonna start my list because it would turn into a book ~ more like a series. I need to just start doing instead of thinking and never doing. Really, I'd like to hire someone to come decorate for me. Want a job?
Not listening to my own wants. I spent money on renovations I didn't want because someone told me it couldn't be done and/or he couldn't do it. I neglected to further my investigation and took the easy way out.
I've since had the old renos ripped apart and did it the way I always dreamed it would be done.
Biggest lesson - ANYTHING can be done. You just have to be willing to pay the price of making your dreams work. Whether it's funds, or time, depending on your given situation.
Seek out dreamers like yourself for that help. Those that think outside of the box are the ones you need to heed advice from. And then wait until you can afford them. :)
I've since added touches to my renovated home that I've never seen anywhere else. Was I concerned what others thought? I was curious but went forward with the help of someone incredibly talented.
My own mom doesn't understand some things I've done. And that means I'm on the right track for me! LOL

My biggest decorating mistake has been passing over the big statement accessory because it was pricey and opting instead for a lot of little inexpensive items that just clutter and need dusting.
It is a hard habit to break.
I bought these amazing wood doors with ornate steel decoration and a vintage Mexican feel via the very commercial Pottery Barn and intended to hang them horizontally behind our living room couch. In the catalog they were always pictured vertical. When the arrived they included hangers and were meant to be hung vertically. I let my husband talk me into hanging them vertically in our master bedroom. I've lived with it for over a year and I don't love them but I know I would love them in their intended spot. So, Sunday night I told him to get his game face on and his man tools cuz those bad boys were moving downstairs behind the sofa. I need to trust my instincts more...even if it turns out being a little more work to get the result I want.
Two more of my decorating mistakes: I don't make enough TIME to do it because I'm always worried about keeping the house clean and clutter free.
Also, I homeschool and haven't paid any attention to the schoo room / office. We spend a LOT of time in there, but it is the junk room - I'd rather have it be more inviting and relaxing.
this is a great topic - thanks!
I searched for 3 years before I finally found THE fabric I wanted for my master bedroom mistreatments. I am currently looking for a beat up old round table that I can throw another mistreatment on. I hope it doesn't take 3 years to find one. :)
Please stop by and enter my EASTER GIVEAWAY.
I know what you mean about the last one - I have 3 boys too! I love the blue door on the wall. I too have not made decorating our bedroom a priority. Not many see it, so there's always something more important.
We lived in our last house for over 5 years and we hung one mirror. I'm afraid to do ANYTHING because I'm afraid it will be wrong. Your advice is so helpful. I've been wanting to paint beach stripes in my bathroom and I'm going to do it!! Worst case, I just paint it over with white or something. Not too risky. Thanks for your post!!
OK...now I'm TRULY convicted!!!! I have the ugliest master bedroom in this house! I keep feeling like "no one sees this room but my husband and I"...so why spend any energy or money on it.
Someone told me the other day that for that VERY reason, it should get a LOT of love and attention.
Now I'm truly convicted! I'll get to work on it. :)
Uuuummm... so the master bedroom thing really popped out at me. Our bedroom is so awful, so atrocious, that it could be on an episode of Oprah to makeover. I HATE our room. I go in to sleep and change my clothes. That's it. I spend so much energy picking up after two little girls and a (messy) husband, that I've really really let our bedroom go. Really. :( That needs to be at the top of my list! Thanks for posting. :)
Ditto all the above!! Let's get outside of our box and do what we love!! Thanks for the motivation!
Wonderful list! We moved after Christmas and our master bedroom has become a mish-mosh of things. We just talked this weekend about what we WANT it to be. It should be important!
I need to tack this list up somewhere.
Not making the master bedroom a priority. When we moved into our current house my oldest daughters room was first and only room that has been decorated. New bedding, painted walls, closet organized. So now I feel like my youngest daughter deserves the same now that she will go into a big girl bed soon.
I love your blog and I love "shopping the house." It's such a high to make something look really great for free! :) I have 3 boys as well and the only lamps in our house are in our master bedroom. I've been too scared they'd break them! My new goal is to get some lamps!! :) Also, I've been too scared to paint our wood table b/c of what other people would say. Lame! I've wanted it creamy white for so long and I'm gonna do it! Thanks for the inspiration!
Well right now I'm trying something new for me - I'm going for a different look than what I've had - I'm going to paint my office in a new color scheme for me - actually have a post up about it right now, I would love any input I can get!!
http://tidymomof2.blogspot.com/2009/03/i-want-to-paint-my-office.html
So I'm trying the "don't be afraid of colors" - or in my case, new colors!!
~TidyMom
My list is similar to yours. The way I learn best is by trial and error. Even in decorating my home. Don't we all?
Karol :0)
Good list. Made me think about my own house and my hesitation to do or not do certain things. Thanks!
My biggest mistake was not truly decorating at all...and treating our home as temporary. Now, 12 years later, we're still in the same house and it feels beyond the decorating point!
I'm 73rd, does that count for something???
I am with you on the Master, it should be a first...it's the room you end up at the end of the day.
xo
I would definitely include in my list: waiting too long to design with my family in mind, worrying about what other people would think, and not getting rid of things I don't love/use/need.
Dear Nester, I ADORE your blog!
I'm new to the blog world and this is the first time I've commented to you, but I love looking at your blog! I could say that 5 more times, but I won't.
I usually just lurk, but I'm still thinking about your question... Biggest Decorating Mistakes. I don't think I can think of ten.
easy ones are that my house is too small. I'm only going to be here a year or two. Another mistake is that I have four small boys so I can't have a decorated house.
However, my biggest mistake is that I don't decorate. That makes me sad:( It isn't totally true. I sorta decorate, but fear and perfection get all mixed in there and screw it up. I have the rooms with trim half painted, bathrooms half done.
Afraid I won't do it right, so I do nothing. Afraid I will waste money because it will look wrong. Afraid I will waste time because it will look wrong.Afraid we aren't organized enough to maintain. Afraid someone will think I'm a bad decorator because it will look wrong. Truth is that I'm not comfortable with my house so I rarely have anyone over. So the only thing that matters is what I think.
I am moving in the right direction and I wish I could just tear off your blog pages and stick them in my dream house notebook. So many great ideas. I'm keeping my eyes open for a door to paint and hang above my bed. And a round table I can cover with pretty fabric. I love fabric, but have been scared to mix and match. (Toile and Plaid, who knew you could use my two favorite things together)And Tobacco Road. Love the color. I'm even thinking of painting black cabinets in my kitchen.
I don't have a natural eye for from scratch decor, but I know what I like when I see it. And girl, you got what I like. Keep it com'n
Thanks for the cheap therapy!

Your Top 10, and so many of the comments, are right on! I have trouble mixing the styles I love to come up with the right 'feel' for our home. A tight budget makes it even harder. However, visiting great blogs like yours, Nester, reminds me to enjoy our home more, "idhtbptbb". Slowly, slowly I am getting there and I am open to changing more when time and money permits.
My biggest mistake? The 16 years I've spent ripping inspiration pages out of magazines, wandering through fabric stores and consignment stores and finding the "perfect" fabric or piece of furniture for pennies and then not buying it, the carefully hoarded paint chips of colors I love that I have never dared to paint on the walls, and the lovely pictures that have spent years hidden in the back of my closet and under my bed waiting to be hung. My husband thinks decorating is a waste of time and money and we had so many battles over "my foolishness" when we first married that I finally just gave up. I have decided it is high time to buy some paint and start mistreating the windows. I want to make my home warm and friendly and a place I want to spend time in. I finally acknowledged to myself how nutty the idea of waiting to fix up my house until I am a little old widow lady is. What is he going to do, divorce me for painting the kitchen cabinets and hanging pictures? Time to "get some grit" as my grandmother would say. I love your blog, it is a great inspiration!
My biggest mistake would be following thedvice of others rather than my own heart.
Kate
Thinking that I shouldn't buy something because I wasn't TOTALLY sure how it would be used--besides, I am trying to simplify. BUT, regreting that I didn't get it anyway because now I keep thinking about it and know it will be just perfect in the ....!!!
Debbykay at Rose Cottage Gardens and Farm
Some of the same things you have on your list would be on mine.
So glad we live, learn and come into our selves.
I think my biggest decorating mistake has been to try to copy what's "in" or what I see in decorating magazines/books. I've just recently embraced MY style. As things are coming together I'm finding that most, if not all, of the things I've gathered over the years really do belong! Who cares what's in style? I've found MY style! Great post Nester!
I totally agreed with most of your list especially the one about not buying it because I didn't know where to put it.
All the best,
Allison
Lovely, lovely room...not perfect...just lovely, lovely...
Yep, I've made some of those myself! But then...I've walked away from a few things that later, I was really glad I did. :-) Ummmm, one mistake I can think of was just now getting around to buying WHITE china...wow...the possibilites are endless with a set of white dishes. :-) And Big Lots has 'em for $35...can't beat that! Susan
I still have 2 overstuffed 90's chairs in my living room. They were supposed to be temporary. Unfortunately my husband and dog like them and they don't like my suggestioned replacements.
using too much red just because i love the color....
i still love the color, but i'm realizing i need some variety now.
sky blue is calling my name....
Buying a bananna yellow reclining chair at IKEA scratch and dent room for super cheap. It turned out to be the most comforatble chair in the house and hubby will never let it go... recover I will! It's in the master bedroom and well... I hate it there.
A billiard green wall in my living/dining room.
Yeah.
My list looks a lot like your ...biggies
#2 Not getting rid of stuff..I am getting better at it..time to simplify
#4 THOSE CHAIRS...really comfy but you need to live in a warehouse to own them(and I live in a tiny little ranch)
#5 So many regrets from passing up those things that made me gasp when I first saw them..Never walk away from those!!!
and last but definetly not least
#7 Why do I always worry what other people will think if I like the way it looks? I'm the one that has to live with it!
I feel much better now...
Thanks for a great post!
You make me laugh out loud, all the while making me stop, think and learn. Stopping by here is always great fun. Your #8 still makes me laugh! When I was in my 20's and in my first home, I buckled to peer pressure and decorated in the same way everyone else did. In my 30's I changed styles, but was of the mind "more was more". I got over that. In my 40's and 50's I do what I want, when I want...Can't wait to see what my 60's will bring!
I posted my version of Thanking with Succulents today after your inspirational post! thanks for the idea!
-kristen
great list, by the way!
hi friend - i'd say earlier on, worrying about what others think. i don't give a rip now :) great post!
Waiting to do something until I decide how I want to have it FOREVER. Paint is easy to change - I don't need a white wall for five years while I try to decide what color I want the wall!
I am guilty of #1 and #2...our master bedroom is sad! However, I'm always tweeking other rooms.
also...
I tend to keep a zillion frames and accessories around that I need to get rid of :-)
did u make your chalkboard that is above your couch? i am trying to make one and am running into alot of trouble
Mine boils down too being lazy and tired and keeping things I don't love but that belong to the othermembers of my family, so I'm a little out of luck. And fighting my kid's natural rambunctiousness to keep things looking imperfectly (of course) beautiful.
It is still a mystery to me how you got that door to hang on the wall (other than attaching hardware to it--I know that) without falling off and taking half the drywall with it or someone's consciousness, but maybe that's because my method of finding studs--if I bother--is knocking on the wall, listening for a sound difference. Good thing no one's hiring ME to hang their things.
ok, i think i'm gonna cry !
I feel like i've got it all wrong in my home!
Let me clarify...
"Cry" in a good way.
It's time for me to NOT BE AFRID OF COLOR and so what if I have 3 boys ? I have a little girl that would love LOTS more 'pretty' THING in my house !
I have made all those mistakes...still have vw's in my family room, but they are there to stay...for now anyways :)
My list is nearly identical to yours!
After years of disappointing myself, I've learned to buy things I love right away because they'll be gone when I go back to the store, and if I like it, go with it! I also know that mt house will never look like a page out of Country Home, but it's still cute!
Great idea for a post!
I agree with so many of these comments. I think a big mistake is clutter. People are so scared to get rid of stuff and make room for 1 of 2 pretty things.
I am so guilty of #1. I have a lovely house but a completely boring master bedroom. We've been here 9 years and completely ignore it.
Surprisingly, it turns out I am not guilty of the other items.
Could you explain why ignoring your Master Bedroom is such a mistake?
Thanks.
Hmm, mistakes AND fears! I think you hit them all for me. My home's floor plan is open so I'm CLUELESS on how to paint. I have paint on the walls and I'm hating the colors. I want something ME, something colorful but, there's that stupid fear again...fear of color, fear of someone thinking I'm nuts for painting it the chosen color. I just feel like my feet are in concrete and I can't move.
Amen. Love your list.
That is actually a really great blog topic and point! In our current house I have tried very hard to decorate for US... its hard!
You are sooo right.

I'm afraid of color too because I've bombed a few two many times. Still, I paint in neutral and try to accent with color.
