Tassel Alternatives

This lamp is so modest and fully clothed in the glorious and alluring item: The Tassel.

Here are a few quick and simple ideas of how to stop the embarrassment of having an unadorned lamp.

1. Embellish an Existing Tassel:

This tassel right up there is and embellished tassel. That means it's not made from scratch. It started out as a pathetic, anorexic tassel and I nursed it back to health with the help of my glue gun, full fringe, ribbon and a neat little metal thing I had laying around. Maybe you have a tassel that's a little skinny. All you have to do is wrap a few layers of fringe around it...Extreme Makeover: Tassel Edition.

2. Substitute with an Ornament

You can also hang a favorite ornament from that pokey out switch on your lamp. I got this bird a few Christmases ago. It has never seen the likes of a Christmas tree.

A friend sent me this cross a few weeks ago. I hung it on the lamp in the kitchen in lieu of a tassel.

3. Use Your Imagination:

I found this bag while out junking this weekend. It's entirely too small for an actual real woman to use but it did have one good quality...

Those big furry pom poms look great wrapped around that lamp switch thing. Won't this be charming in the winter?

Last Wednesday's Tassel Sale was a success thanks to all you rabid tassel fans. After only 21 minutes over half the 100 tassels had sold. Once we hit the hour mark, there were only 14 tassels left. And shortly thereafter there was one solitary and lonely Baby's First Christmas tassel left and I had to take him out of his misery.

My plan is to open up the shop again later in the summer. I'm experimenting with the best way to keep from wanting to burn down my craft room and sealing the door shut with hot glue... taking good breaks seems like the obvious choice. My plans are subject to change based on what kind of mood I'm in.

Some of you didn't get the tassel that you wanted --I'm so sorry. I had no idea how quickly these little gems would sell out and I promise, if I ever do this sale again I'll open later in the day to accommodate you west coasties.

Now, back to our topic:

What do you hang on your lamps? Or is your lamp a nudist?

Super cute ideas! My lamps are nudes, except at Christmas they have little ornaments hanging from the shades.

Mrs. Jones said...

I haven't done this yet, but I would like to tie a pretty ribbon around the shade, and either put a buckle on it or tie it in a knot.

Glad your sale was such a success.

Have you ever thought of just designing tassels and hiring a company to make them?

I would have like to purchase a tassel but they went like hotcakes.
I'll definitely be there at the next sale.

I too decorate with whatever I find interesting! Some tassels, however they do need a makeover, some "ormanments", the term ornaments doesn't necessarily mean holiday ornaments to me, just means it needs to hang on something! I also hang tassels from knobs (or Sknobs), lamp pulls, finials, or anything else looking all naked.

You should join my link party on Thursday. My very first- we are celebrating our childhood rooms. Add photos if you have them, or just great descriptions will be fun! I am digging up some doozies!

Oh, cmon you knew it would be a success - look at the # of followers you have!!! Lamps are dfinately adorned here - fringe, pom-poms, tassels, love it all!!! I'll hope for one of your tassels later in the summer - also - are you still at the black Lion in Charlotte?

Kathi said...

Can you believe I don't have a single tassel in my home? Nope, not one... I do like embellished lampshades. Just worried I might get tired of them after a while?
A tassel could be changed though... you might just have me coming around here!?

I cracked up with the fur balls from the purse to the lamp...that is great!

I have not really decorated lamps but do love to hang from knobs~

You sure are going to be busy shipping out all those tassels! Congrats on such a great sale. I was a dork who was refreshing the page until they went up...can't wait to get mine!

I have a few store bought tassels on lamps. I'd love to have them on all lamps, but I'm pretty sure my DH would revolt. Thanks for the other ideas!

I'm like kathi, not a single tassel. I was SO looking forward to your sale, but they were all gone by the time I got online. I was very diappointed! I had a lot of places in mind that I would love to hang one...now my lamps just made that list!

Remodeling Guy said...

WOW! NESTER...you are reading my mind girl! I was SO thinking "I need some tassels for my lamps today!..."

Not really. But they are cool and I LOVE your little pom-poms you stole off that purse. I always wanted pom-poms....

Well, I'm ashamed to say I don't have any tassels, but I AM glad to say I use ornaments, etc. like you showed. Whew. I'm worthy--for now. Can't wait for the next sale. I was at work this time and missedo out completely! Glad to hear it'll be later next time. Congratulations on all the tassel sales!!

my lamps are so boring and sterile looking. you truly do inspire me. any tips on finding cheap lamps and making them look nice and chic -- our budget is tight these days :)

I have tassels on a few lamps - some double, hung from the finial (hangs over top of shade), some single, hangs from switch. I prefer to *dress* a few lamps and leave the others nude.

Ooo! I love that little white purse!!

I have that little bird ornament, but it's a different color. Hubs bought it for me a few years ago. I think it looks adorable on the lamp like you have it. Very cute!

Jen@Balancing Beauty and Bedlam said...

Too smart to buy the purse, and steal the pom pom...genius. No tassle loving lamps, but I do have a cross just like that hanging. Does that count? :)

i also have an anorexic tassle that I got at a yard sale. I am SO going to fatten it up, and I might even send it to the Remodeling Guy since his he wants one for his lamp so badly.

I just hang tassel on my lamps. But love the idea of hanging ornaments. Thanks!

What lamps?
My children have destroyed all but 3 lamps in my house. How sad.
I really need to figure out the "inexpensive" lamp thing because I really love some of the Pottery Barn lamps but don't have the extra $$$ to allow those to get destroyed... maybe Home Goods? I just never know which ones to pick.....then I can't make a decision, then I leave...ugh. I need lamp therapy :)

Ohhh, my poor little lamps ARE nudists. Now I feel bad...like when I take my dog's collar off and she just has to walk around nek-ed. :)

I've been meaning to tell you...remember all those months ago when you did your "create a room you love" series? You totally inspired me to update my master bathroom and bedroom....and 15,029 minutes later I'm 3/4 of the way done! I guess I should have paid more attention to the "10 minute" part...lol.

I'm SO relieved to know that that pokey out thing has a REAL name!!! A "Pokey Out Switch"! Who knew??? All this time I have been embarrassing myself by calling it the Pokey Out Thing. Thanks for setting us all straight!!! LOL! Your blog is not only insightful, but so much fun to read. I enjoy every post. Thanks!!! Kim

I made tassels out of my childrens' graduation tassels for lamps for them. It solved the problem of what to do with the tassel and is a memento as well!

I have some lamps that have "potential". I've been thinking about getting some cute Amy Butler fabric and jazzing up the shades.

My lamps are with out embellishments, however I did receive a pretty cross last year from Christmas, that I need to hang on a lamp with some pretty ribbon.
Thanks for the idea!
Bravo on your tassel sell out!

My lamps are currently nude. I love the dressed up look but I'm still in the "figuring out" stage of what I want to put on them so they won't end up making my room look too cluttered or busy. Need to keep the hubby happy, too, you know!

Okay, you've embarrassed me now!
Guess I'll have to drag out my Christmas stuff and find those little felt birdies I have and hang them on my naked lamps!!

My lamps are bare but I think they need some tassels because of you.

You are the one who says it doesn't have to be perfect. Glad to see that you feel that way about your work too. Your tassels are beautiful even if you don't think they are perfect.

I have to admit...Lamp nudist...but I'm thinking they need some covering up!

Amanda @ Serenity Now said...

My lamps apparently live in a nudist colony, but the birdie ornament one might just change my mind. I haven't seen any tasseled lamps in my area of VA, but I could be the first! ;)

SoBella Creations said...

I use that idea but on my ceiling fans. My daughters room is a beach theme so she has a seahorse hanging from one chain. And a dolphin ornament hanging from the other chain.

Rachel said...

I only have TWO lamps - one isn't even plugged in nor do I like it very much. I think I could make myself like it by adding something. Can you tell my lamps are living life in the nude? Yep. But I like the idea of hanging an ornament, a photo, something from the switch. Hmmm, must think on what I have. Not much.

Anonymous said...

Nester,

I LOVE that you showed that little birdie ornament. Not only is it divine, but what I have hanging on a lamp in my living room looks like a round ball of bird seed. Very fitting. It's a Christmas ornament that I got 80% off at Kohls. I was actually planning to use it in lieu of hanging kissing balls in our bedroom windows but it never got past the living room. That lamp was very alluring.

Most of my lamps are bare, but even worse than that, two lamps have skinny, insignificant little tassels. Thanks for the post, I now see the error of my ways :) If you have the time and have not seen the video of the cute little two year who SINGS The Lord's Prayer, no kidding, stop by my blog, I couldn't resist posting it today.

My lamps are naked, but my curtain rod headboard and my metal curtain tie backs have ornaments. Since I don't do a tree (holiday traveler) I should get some more out to enjoy on the lamps! Thanks for the inspiration!

My lamps used to be nudists. Now they like a big fat ribbon tied around their shade, but other than that...completely neked! LOVE the fluffy pom poms ( I started to call them furry balls then thought better of it).

Congrats on your hugely successful tassel sale. That is fantastic.

p.s. I'm having a giveaway to celebrate the grand opening of my etsy shop. I'd be honored for you to stop by and enter!

Ms. Nester,
You are sitting on a gold mine. I'm telling you, you could sell so many things and make lots of money for those Dave Ramsey steps. I'd put your creations on eBay, provide a link, and let the bidding begin. Seriously, you are super talented. I think you will be shocked at the income you can produce. ...even just selling stuff you have around the house or things that catch your eye at a garage sale. Pray about it.

I have a collection of sort-of necklaces on my bedside lamp. They include tiny photos that JC Penney used to include in photo packages, my son's hockey jersey number, tags of dear pets that are now playing together up in heaven, and just a few pendants that are meaningful to me. I don't notice them everyday but when they do catch my attention they remind me of sweet days in the past.
