When we moved in the first thing I did was removed the weird fern patterned "privacy paper" from the front door sidelights. Y'all. This stuff is like contact paper for your windows only SUPER sticky. One day I walked up and found my boys pressing their hands and faces and well, other body parts up against the sticky residue while daring each other to see who could rip said body part away the fastest.
So now do I not only have thick, unclear sticky windows, you can also make out the shapes of um, parts. Help! What can I use to take the stick off?

I think that Avon's Skin So Soft works great to get sticky stuff off glass. I've also heard it's a great bug repellent. Who knew something for your skin would have so many other uses?? :-)

Goof Off! (But open the doors and windows, or move your fainting couch behind you if you don't ventilate).
Goo Gone! Find it in the automotive section of Wal-Mart. I've also seen it in Walgreens.
Spray or wipe it on. Let is site for about 30 minutes.
I work in a children's museum and we use this stuff all the time. GREAT!
Goo Gone, cooking oil or WD-40 (stinky!) with a plastic paint scraper or one of those Pampered Chef little scrapers for stoneware. Oil will break up the adhesive then you just scrape it off. Of course, you then have oily windows to wash - ammonia works great for oily windows :)
Goo Gone works great on anything like that - I get it at the dollar store!

Try some vegetable oil on a paper towel.

Mix a little dish soap in some warm water and put in a spray bottle. Squirt it on the window and take a razor blade and scrape it off. The soapy water helps with the stickiness and makes the razor blade glide easier on the glass.
It doesn't take long and is cheap, cheap, cheap!
I vote goo gone also- beware of the Goof Off- that stuff is potent in smell!

Before I bought something, I'd try rubbing alcohol! It removes sticky stuff pretty well.
If that doesn't work, Goof Gone rocks. :o)

Ok, so far I've tried the oil--and it actually did help break up some of the sticky--if it weren't so thick I think it would have worked fine.
The dish liquid/water combo kind of worked and I loved the pampered chef scraper idea. But now I have scrape marks in my sticky. It just not old enough to be hard and crusty. And too fresh to be scraped off.
I'm going to get me some goo gone -- I'll be back in a few! Thank you all--and keep the comments coming please, in case this doesn't work!

I'm falling out of my chair laughing at little boys daring each other to rip their various "parts" away from the sticky glass! Sounds like something my little guy would do, and his dad would probably be the one daring him to do it too!

I use Goo Gone, but I think it smells really bad. It works, though.
I'm pretty sure Shaklee's Basic G would take it off. It surprises me with what it can do every time I use it. It's not all chemically either.
Basic H from the same company strips wallpaper like a dream! We used it on an old row house rental we rehabbed last summer. TWO layers of older than me wallpaper on 110 year old walls!
Try diluted ammonia, that should do the trick. I use it all of the time for "sticky stuff" and it works like a charm! Just dilute it with a little water and voila, its gone!
Its cheap and easy.

Do you have a "Dollar Tree" around or in your area? Try AWESOME in a spray bottle. It is a concentrate but will take anything off...be careful it takes paint you don't want off too. I use to take the paint off the baseboards and woodwork when I paint. It takes off any grease.
Nail polish remover takes the sticky of price tags off of glass.
I used to use goo gone, but the smell made me sick. My new favorite for cleaning ANYTHING & EVERYTHING is called Krud Kutter. It is the BEST!!!

I used Goo Gone to remove all the manufacturer's stickers from our windows when we built our house. Spray it on, let it sit for several minutes, then use a razor blade and damp cloth to clean off the residue. Good luck!
Goo Gone or sometimes rubbing alcohol will work. You might try applying either with a Magic Eraser for some extra power!

Looks like most of the votes are for Goo Gone, and I'd have to agree. To clean the windows after the goo is gone, try this: 4 oz. ammonia, 12 oz. rubbing alcohol, 16 oz. water. Mix it in an old spray bottle. This is what I use for cleaning mirrors, windows--and bathrooms! The ammonia cuts through grease and crud, and the alcohol disinfects and helps things shine. The smell is strong but dissipates quickly.
I'm just glad that the sticky stuff on the window was not actually sticky enough to pull off any, uh, parts. :) Boys are fun, aren't they?
You can use skin so soft it works great. The smell will drive you crazy though. Or you can also use a product for scrapbooking that will remove pics when it is stuck or glued and you want to move it. Very gentle.
If the Goo Gone doesn't work, I would try nail polish remover. That always works for me (and I have no idea why I have so much experience removing sticky stuff). :-)

I keep lighter fluid handy to remove sticky stuff from picture frames, vases, drinking glasses, etc.! It works great...the smell isn't great but it takes the sticky off!! :)
If the lacquer stuff and goo-be-gone doesn't work, try lighter fluid and then scrub lightly with a plastic pot scrubber.
My husband swore by it and I thought he was crazy, but then I tried it...it has saved so many materials from not only being sticky for life, but also from getting damaged.
Be sure to rinse with soap and water, and wear gloves. :)

I seccond the goo gone! you may still have to scrub a bit but if you can get it to soak in (instead of sliding off since it's a vertical surface) the job will be easier!

guess what, my husband used that laquer thinner and it worked! With a razor blade and some brute force. Something about force and a razor and stuff that smells so toxic just doesn't appeal to me.
But, he left me to do the second window. My mom's on her way over, maybe I can get her to do it.
I am still gonna get the goo gone at Target today. They would have it, right?

As many others have said...Goo Gone worked great for me when I had this SAME problem! I've also had friends tell me there is an "Oxy-Clean" product that works just as well.

Goo Gone -- easiest to find and works well on sticky stuff, but you may need to use a lot of it. I also like a product called Energine, but it can be hard to find. It's a little like nail polish remover, but it really cuts through the stickies. It will de-stick everything fast. Make sure you cap it while you're wiping as it does evaporate.
Try Pledge first! I use Pledge to get ANY sticky residue off. Spray, leave it for a minute, then scrape off gently with a razor blade. You might not even need a razor blade. Promise!
lighter fluid! its what we use at my work to get left over double sided tape off the walls all the time!
Goo gone--it's nice to have on hand to take off all kinds of sticky stuff...price tags, labels, etc.
Glad you found something that works! A note about nail polish remover - it'll only work if it's NOT the non-acetone kind. Must be the acetone that cuts the sticky.

Goo gone to the rescue.. it works great on tons of things! or maybe even peanut butter? it really helps eliminate the stickiness of gum... and chances are you already have it, so it will be on the cheap. :)
Mineral oil will work well and its less expensive that goo gone or other products on the market. If you don't have mineral oil baby oil will work just the same!
I was reading about all natural remedies on MSN the other day, and they suggested using Mayo to get sticky off of stuff. Might be worth the try.

I always keep lighter fluid - I find that it works much better than Goo Gone on lots of sticky things.
It gets gum out of hair and off of clothes in nothing flat!!

We have a privacy covering on our bottom three window panes of our door's sidelights too, it's called nose prints and slobber from the dog. I know how to GET that off but for some reason, I just can't keep it off. Can we change your catch phrase to, "It doesn't have to be totally clean to be beautiful?" ;)

Goo Gone will work, but be careful, you don't want your kids to get a hold of it, it's nasty bad for you stuff! And if you drop it on your carpet.....you're done for, it bleached our old carpet. Good luck!
I'm all for Magic Erasers!!! They have saved my kids' lives quite a few times! Very impressed with the body parts on the window...why are boys SO obsessed with all their 2000 parts?!?!

WD40 will dissolve it....shoot, it will dissolve chewing gum from hair and carpet.....
or Goo Gone. I found the last several bottles of Goo Gone at the Dollar Tree for a $1. It is like $3.50 or more at Walmart and other places.
Both of these are great for removing price stickers, or stickers in general from glass and plastic items that I buy.

It's been said before, but GOO-GONE works miracles on sticky residue! I like to buy it in the spray bottle! It's a little easier to use!

WD-40 will work and then use a miracle eraser to make it shine. I am amazed at the WD-40 it stinks until it dries but is non-toxic. And I always have some.
You can sparay wd-40 on clothes when those darn stickers get left on clothes and they go through the washer and dryer and ruin the shirt. Well spray with WD-40 and let sit and the sticker will roll right off it will not stain clothes. AWESOME.
"Goo Gone" and "Mr Clean Magic Erasers" are two of my favorite household products. I also like "OOPS" which is a little stronger and good on gum, sticker residue, tar, and dried latex paint.
Goo gone works well to remove sticky stuff from most surfaces. But, like some of the other responses it can have a strong odor. I have heard that olive oil works to remove stickiness as well but haven't gotten around to trying that one yet.
I've read that Vinegar can get sticky stuff off.
I've used goo gone as well. I've also used a Downy Dryer Sheet to get gum off. Just wet it and rub. I think Goo Gone worked better though.
I take sticky stuff off for a paid living. I letter and stripe vehicles through my graphics company.
If anyone has ALOT to take off, trip down to your nearest signshop and ask if you can purchase abit of their Rapid Remover (and if they don't stock it, it's time they do!). It's a citrus based safe on surfaces adhesive remover. You spritz, wait a few, then the goop scoops off like nothing.

Having worked for an orthopaedic surgeon....I have your remedy. Acetone! We used it to remove casting material that would stick and dry to the exam tables and counters. Acetone will remove anything!!!!
Hey there - I'm pretty sure you already have your answer, but I swear by Goo Gone. It ALWAYS gets that sticky residue off. Follow up with a good wipe down of windex and you'll be set.

Goo Gone! It removes anything that is sticky from any surface. Just spray a little on and it loosens even the thickest goo.
It even removes sharpie.
goo gone or Goof off is one I would at least try first. Another secret of the trade is a razor knife. BUT! You have to be very careful that you hold it just right to not scratch the window. Hope someone's comment helps you out!
I agree, lighter fluid is awesome, it gets all those sticky spots off stuff when you peel the price tag off and it leaves it behind. WD40 - same idea. But Goo Gone is great too, it got all the sticky gunge off the floor left from the peel and stick tiles the previous owners put down in our diningroom (?!)

Take it from me, a professional gunk remover, USE WD-40. It won't warp or ruin any plastic parts like Gunk Off, nor will it stink like lighter fluids. GREAT STUFF, whodathunkit?

Goo Gone is great, but I'd try just plain old rubbing alcohol first. I managed to get a lot of the sticky remains of privacy paper off with a wallpaper scraper and rubbing alcohol.
Goo Gone. It's inexpensive and will take it right off!
One of the most wonderful things about Goo Gone, btw, is that it smells WONDERFUL! Who doesn't like the smell of orange essential oils? I think in small amounts it also works great as a furniture polish/ conditioner.

"Goo Gone" is the BEST stuff! Goes on like oil, cleans off everything so slick and easy, and then dries like it wasn't even there.

If you haven't already cleaned that glass, try using a Mr.lean magic eraser-- no fumes either!
I was thinking Goo Gone, too, but I wonder if undiluted white vinegar would do anything? It seems to get a lot off glass that other products meant to do the same job don't. And it doesn't hurt anything and deodorizes (I should douse my house with it), in case any of the parts left smells. ;)

My mom thinks WHITE VINEGAR works on everything, I would try it.
try googone Xtreme (not regular googone) walmart sells this - and buy some gloves that don't dissolve at lowes. and then use a razor blade to scrape the goo away.
Lighter fluid works, and it evaporates quickly so the smell doesn't linger.

That should work. I mean, unless this is the stickiest junk on the planet, then you might need that Jasco stuff, but that's really nasty, caustic crap (I used it to remove glued down felt paper from the slab before I laid down my tile in the last house).
Wow, what a helpful load of comments here! I saw a few "mineral spirits" and plenty of "goof off" replies. While all that works, I have used regular, run-of-the-mill nail polish remover with a garage rag or old t-shirt to remove this very stuff from windows. And to get into the edges, I would scrape first with a straight razor and then scrubby-scrub with nail polish remover on a q-tip. Easy as pie!
Goo be gone available at the hardware store.

Vinegar, rubbing alcohol, mayo, goo gone, 409...keep trying one at a time til you find one that works.

Peanut butter! I always use PB to get goopy gunk off anything (even the dealer's sticker on my car!) Just cake that stuff on, leave it on overnight, and wipe off in the morning. Easy!

I used it on our old wood floors when we moved in to remove some yucky thick green padding that was stuck on after some area rugs were removed. It was really stuck! But definitely need lots of aeration (sp?)
Shout of Spray and Wash work really good to take off gunk. I got a ton of sticker junk off of my anitque dresser that I covered in stickers as a child.
Un-Du!! You can buy it at Wal-Mart in the crafting section. It even comes with a little scraper on the top. It's made to un-du the sticky stuff. I use it in crafting all the time, it will even allow you to remove a sticker from something and then re-use the sticker.
Pretty much anything petroleum-based/oily will cut through stickiness, that includes Goo Gone, Goof Off, Baby Oil, Mineral Oil, peanut butter, lacquer thinner, moisturizer, vegetable oil, soap, etc. The higher the viscocity, the better it will remove really stubborn sticky stuff.
Just so ya know. :)
I have a house cleaning business and I use alcohol to remove sticky from glass and mirrors. Works wonders!

Citra-solv straight from the bottle! Just put a little on a rag and rub away. Then keep going...till it's gone. (Goo Gone is really the same as Citra-solv, I think.)

Well, I'll go against the grain here.... Goo Gone is great for some things but still more effort than I'd like for a project like that. I noticed that someone beat me to it a post or two above mine. Undo-Sticker Lifter ROCKS!!! You can find in the craft section of either Walmart...maybe Target (not sure) or any scrapbooking/craft store. My son had a bumper sticker on the tailgate of his new truck that he decided to remove and it left the sticky residue that had collected weeks worth of dirt (and he had tried GooGone to no avail...didn't want to scratch paint by scrubbing too hard). It was a gross mess on his pretty, white tailgate. One swipe of *undo* on a cloth and the mess was gone. He now has a new respect for my scrapbooking tools! LOL! ; ) Hope that helps!
I think I'm going to try some "Undo Sticker Lifter"-the one thing I don't like about Goo Gone is that you have to really saturate sticky stuff and it's hard to do on some surfaces. This sounds like just the thing!

Goo Gone also takes candle was right off your tablecloth.
Goo-gone and a razor blade. Just rub the Goo-gone oil on and then carefully razor it so that you don't scratch the window. You can find Goo-gone at Wal-mart and other places but I like to buy mine at good 'ole Dollar Tree for just a buck! =) (Can you tell I've done this before?) Anyway, then I clean with Hopes Perfect Glass cleaner found at Lowe's. I promise it is the BEST glass cleaner EVER! It doesn't streak or leave any type of residue. If you normally use Windex etc. and you try this stuff I can almost promise you will switch! Good luck. ~Jennifer in Texas

White vinegar might help. I've used it to take off wallpaper.
I don't know where you can find it in the US but eucalytus oil will take sticky residue off, is non-toxic and leaves a wonderful smell behind.
You could also try rubbing alcolhol. Cheap and most people have it.
I think you have your answer but there is another item I didn't read. IT is called KLIX and you get it at automotive stores. I was a teacher/principal and we bought it by the gallons. It would remove crayon and tape residue no matter how old it was. My two year old COLORED a recliner with crayon and I used this and it was as good as new.

My grandma always advises me to use vinegar, sometimes combined with baking soda for everything and it always seems to be just the thing.
I second goo gone too though and think goof off is the same thing.
Also, here is a post I would love to see if you like, you move a lot, you also shop your house a lot, how do you decide what stuff to keep from year to year/move to move and how do you decide what to move along? I was just trying to clean a round mirror from Ikea, basic, have used it before different times and places and it seems to "classic" to get rid of and yet I don't have any plans to use it right now and my home feels too full. So, I would love to hear your thoughts and maybe I'm not the only one. Just a thought. Kelly

Anytime the glue is left on glass from a sticker, price tag, etc. you can put a touch of cooking oil on it. Any kind will work. You have to let is set there for a bit though and then... it just WIPES off.
Goo Be Gone - which is orange solvent.

My husband used to be a window washer in Chicago, so I asked him what you should do. He said there is no substitute for soapy water (dish soap) and a utility razor blade (a new one-so it doesn't scratch the glass). You can find the blades at a local hardware store! There you have it!!! He's done this a million times! Let us know how it goes!

I would use eucalyptus essential oil on paper towel to clean off the gunk. It smells OK too. I'm in Australia so I'm not sure if you can get it in the US.
I would try something called Goo Gone.
We had the same thing covering the windows by the door in our old house. Peeling it off was one of the first things we did, and then we had that same sticky gunk problem. I tried a lot of things, but what eventually worked was Goof Off, and lots of it. I don't really like using it - I much prefer something more natural, but my usual remedy for such things (tea tree oil) wouldn't get it off - it just sort of smeared it. Good luck! Love hearing the funny boy stories (I have two myself!).
I usually shun chemical products and go with something more natural like olive oil or vingegar, HOWEVER, this definitely looks like a job for Goo Gone.
I keep pvc cleaner for just this purpose. Found out about it at my job. It even has the little dauber attached to the can lid - it is acetone based - but stronger than anything nail polish remover.
Smear it on with the dauber, wipe off with a paper towel, follow with whatever standard glass cleaner you like.

WD-40 should work as well. I've used Goo Gone and a razor blade for tape and it worked.
Goof Off! Goof Off is sold at most hardware stores, Lowes, Home Depot, etc. It is VERY strong but I've used it on everything from bumper decal sticker residue, to window decals, construction tape gunk, etc. Everywere I had something that wouldn't come up, Goof Off got it. But open that front door before you use it because it is strong smelling!
Goop Off
We had a window cleaning business for years and one year when a new mall opened, they asked me to clean the stars off. So I called a couple of places and one guy told me WD-40 and a sharp razer scraper (which I already knew--the razor part I mean) WD-40 actually had a zillion uses. I gave the mall a quote, they said No thank you and had their regular floor maintenance people do it. After having to replace over $20K in glass, my quote to them for a thousand dollars to clean up the Gap and Baby Gap storefront looked pretty good :D
was going to say a lotion...the oil is great, but if the walls are flat paint, it will stain them. Lotion is easier to control and clean up...without being as chemical-y as WD40 which would work too.
Try Goop off or even peanut butter will usually remove the sticky residue. Smear it on and then use something like a razor blade to scrape it off and then reapply till you have all the sticky gunk gone and then you can clean it to a beautiful shine-until you have new fingerprints to clean-hee hee

Vinegar will remove sticky residue. Not sure if anyone had mentioned it yet but it was the first thing I thought of.

I didn't look through the other comments to see if this had already been suggested, but use Pam cooking spray. I used it on my new oven - it had a big sticker on the window that left a sticky mess. A little Pam took it right off. Followed up with Windex and it looks great!
here are two ideas - both two step.
vaseline, eave for 12 hour then wash off with soapy water. This also removes wood stain etc on hands, labels on pots,pans, silver etc.
The other is
oil (I use olive oil) and then wash it off in half an hour.
Basically the sticky stuff and the oil/vaseline bind together and then you just use soapy water to remove the oil.

Advantage is that it is non-toxic.
I agree with the woman who's husband suggested lighter fluid. I used this all the time when I would clean off registers at the grocery store I worked at in high school and college. Just need a little bit on a rag. It works like a charm!
Goof Off. My husband owns a contracting company and the "guys" all swear by it.
When we had a new tub installed it was covered in all kinds of annoying labels and stickers and the stuff worked like a charm.
