An Inexpensive Pot Rack

Sometimes the simplest way to make something...is to drive to IKEA and buy it ready made for $25. But thanks for all of your ingenious ideas on how to make my own.

Have you ever sat out to make something only to find it much easier just to purchase?

YES! I find often my projects that seem simplest are the ones that end up taking hours to complete. The most recent purchase of this nature has been our garage storage. So many great ideas out there but REALLY the ready made boxes worked the best.

Done is good! Even if it cost $25. Sometimes we have to consider the hidden costs of diy... labor, aggravation, procratination, etc! Yay for your new pot rack!! Blessings!

This seems to be the story of my life these days...easier to buy than purchase!

Haha - novel idea. It looks really good too.

You made me laugh because I was actually walking around a flea-tique the other day thinking "Maybe I should find something that I don't HAVE to spray paint..."..lol.

You couldn't have made it for that and that simple!! Great find!!

You can't beat Ikea! Anymore, I try and buy things that are finished or in need of only a little TLC...the projects have just piled up a little too high lately. Happy Labor Day!!!

I adore your blog! I just found it the other day and I've been slowly going back through it and reading everything that catches my eye (which is almost everything)! Its so amazing the way you decorate on a budget AND that you're a renter. My husband is in the Air Force so we get to rent for now and it is a challenge to decorate. I cannot tell you how much I enjoy seeing all of the ideas you post.
After reading your pot rack dilemma I decided I want one too! Previous renters/owners of our house have left behind some fantastic old windows and now I can't wait to transform one into a pot rack!
Thank you so much!

Looks great. I did some window treatments in my dining room based on yours ;-) Thanks for so much inspiration (and motivation) in your blog.

Yes....slipcovers.

There are some things that just aren't worth the time to make. :)

Well it certainly looks great. I don't blame you, sometimes it is easier to just buy what you need. Shopping around and getting prices and ideas, then weighing that against how easy you could make it is always a good thing to take time to do, huh? I love pot racks but when we remodeled our kitchen 2 yrs ago, I just couldn't find the right spot for one.

Absolutely! I think that was a great buy and unless you are doing it for the pure pleasure of making it yourself, you can save time {for the right price} buying it.

Dude. Thank you for making me feel like I don't always have to create something on my own. I'm not always that great at it.

There's an IKEA in the city that I've been dying to go to. Still haven't made it there yet. One of these days............! :) Love your pot-rack!

I love IKEA! I used to take my son there just to play, it was a fun filled afternoon.

I think something is wrong with me... when I first saw your post title, I thought it read, "An inexpensive PET ROCK!" ha ha ha!

Miss Mustard Seed said...

Yes! A perfect example of this is furniture. My hubby has a nice shop and loves wood-working, but it is cheaper to buy a piece of furniture from a thrift store or yard sale a fix it up then it is to make one.

Gotta love IKEA!!! :) We have one about 30-40 minutes away, and it is so much fun to drive up. I am toying with the idea of giving their "childcare" spot a shot, but I am a little nervous about that. I'm not normally a nervous mom about Sunday School, MOPS, babysitting, but not too sure about IKEA babysitting. ;)

Oh yes, I have done this way too many times. :) Just a few weeks ago, I bought my son a $12 bike at a thrift store, intending to fix it up (it was a girl's bike) with paint. It ended up having more problems than I realized and would've cost us $30-40 to fix when we could buy him a new one for $40. So much for recycling. :)

Ugh. Yes!!!

I made a burlap round tablecloth with buillon fringe that would've cost me about $65 (including shipping) if I'd bought it from Ballard Designs. But knowing how inexpensive burlap is, I decided to make it myself. Only I forgot about the fringe and had no coupons, nor the patience to wait for a sale. Then I totally miscalculated (i.e. underestimated) the amount of fringe I needed. I ended up spending $30-40 on fringe. For a $12 burlap tablecloth. So much for the savings! Next time: coupon for fringe. Better math skills.

Uhhhh...yes. More than I'd like to admit. It looks great, and I'm sure it's WAY worth the money you spent. Sometimes saving time is better than saving money.

That's why I try to go semi-homemade. Some things are actually cheaper to just go ahead and buy. This happens to me with cooking and baking all the time!

I am constantly making things that cost way more to make than to buy *and* that I end up not being happy with. Wise choice on the pot rack :-)

I love it! I also love the white beverage dispenser. Does it have a place to write on it with chalk? I've been on the look out for a new one, as the one I've had for years got broken this year. Where did you find this one? Thanks so much! You are truly an inspiration!

Ok, first off, I love your blog! I rarely leave comments, but I read it a lot and follow it. However. Today I have to comment.

I think you mean "inexpensive" pot rack... (Although, if you COULD hang pots from the other... well, that would be impressive, but probably only fitting for a different kind of blog altogether...)

Please feel free to delete this comment. :0)

LOL! You know how I love IKEA! Really, you have so many other things to do (like show your loyal readers the rest of your new house-hint, hint) that there is nothing wrong with going for ready made. I can't believe how clean the top of your refrigerator is. Mine is a hot mess.

love your little blue pot

Yep, sometimes it's easier just to buy it premade. I think $25 is a great price, too. We don't have an Ikea around here, but we're headed to Atlanta this weekend, and it's one of the places we are DEFINITELY going. Can't wait!

Love the pot rack. Silk curtains are much cheaper to buy than to attempt to make. And paying someone to install a patio was sooooooo worth it. 2 days and it was done, and I didn't lose my mind or kill my back.

Sarah Bonn said...

Oh goodness, probably more times than I'd like to admit!

Yes, happens to me as well. I actually looked at that pot rack at Ikea last week but it was too long for my space. I went with the smaller stainless one. My husband appreciated me just buying one and not trying to make one!

Hey Nester~ Hope you enjoyed a great holiday weekend :) Glad you found such an awesome deal on the pot rack! The closest IKEA is a few hours away and now that the kids are in school, a friend of mine & I are gonna go check it out...can't wait!

Just wanted to say thanks for visiting my blog and the sweet comments...come on by again...I'm currently hosting a 300th post giveaway!

Today I was feeling inspired by your blog and decided to take the plunge and paint some furniture.

Then I spilled paint all over our back porch.

Woops!!

Our porch doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful, right?? Can you tell my husband that??

You are TOO correct in this assessment:0). I wish I had a nickle for every "project" I picked up from a yard sale, trash day, or knick- knack shop! That would be a LOT of nickles :0)!

Roeshel said...

Definitely. We're all about DIY-ing, but there are some things either better left to the professionals (no one gets hurt - lol) or purchased (again, no one gets hurt!).

:)

Love your pot rack. Mr. DIY hopes to have one in our kitchen when it's refinished.

Yes! I always opt to buy over make because I'm so lazy, I won't finish the project. Now I just wish it worked on babies. I wouldn't have stretch marks from #1, pictures with a bad hair bleach highlighting job from a mid-pregnancy crises on #2, back pain from #3 and 4, hemorrhoids from all of the above... But I do love holding them when they come out. Which has everything to do with pot racks. Unless it counts I'm visiting the pot a lot lately. And again, you get too much TMI from Aubrey.

YES, the SIX panels i needed for drew's big boy room when i was pregnant..i was going to make them out of burlap..do you know how much burlap that is to deal with..and a pregnant woman to boot..i broke down and bought khaki twill grommetted (big stainless grommets) from Ballard..not cheap but i found an online coupon and just did it and they look great and dont shed and i didnt have to mess with all of the burlap and the grommets slide great on the rod.

oh and the rods..i was going to make the rods out of plumbing pipe stuff..really cool pieces but i could tell standing on the plumbing pipe aisle at home depot that sat morning that husband and i were going to have a fight probably and a lot of headache over the funky rods so i said "let's just go see if they have any in stock the right length.." they did, there werent cheap but they are nice looking and he had them up by 5 pm and no argument..everything cant be homemade and funky.sometimes it needs to be EASY and done...love this post..i should send you a picture of these windows..so functional..no blinds..i really use the drapes for privacy!

Love this idea Nester! I just purchased a door at Lowes for 420 and was trying to decide what to do with it. I was soo excited when I saw t his but sadly I have a wall plug smack dab where the door would hang! I don't think it would get covered by the door.

I didn't read through to see what other people have commented, so forgive my suggestion if its redundant, but I'd want to make some pretty fabric chain covers for those chains!! =)
