31 Day 20~ Fill in the Blanks

There lots of over looked spaces in our homes to hang a little loved item or feature a fun embellishment.

Here are a few ideas of where to hang an extra plate, lonely frame or apply a vinyl decal, I'm sure there are zillions more:

  • next to a lamp
  • above the curtain rod
  • between two windows
  • tie a ribbon from the curtain rod and let a mirror hang down over a window
  • on the front of a bookshelf
  • on the inside back of a bookshelf

Here are some little places I've found to embellish with plates and vinyl decals:

Where have you hung a little something to fill in dead space?

Beautiful. Girl, I just love your taste. I do love to hang something unexpected above the doorways in our home. You know, to draw the "eye" up! ;)

We recently hung an old 4 pane window in an opening between our family room & dining area/kitchen. Our house is old ( 1898 old) & someone took off a side porch (they removed 4 porches and I want them all back!), added a dining area to the kitchen but there were two outside windows looking out to that porch. They just cut a big opening in the wall, framed it, added a little shelf area and left it. It has been a pain in my backside for the almost 18 years we've been here. I had no clue what to do with it. Thanks to DIY Network we seen where they hung smaller windows in frames around a patio. That started the wheels turning. So up to the antique mall I went, found the window I wanted for under $10 (chipped old paint on one side, old patina finished on the other), took it home, hubby hung it & it looks great. Now I want to put a fall wreath on the side facing the family room & I'll be one happy camper.

I've always loved little things that add that extra touch - though I've been accused at times of having too much on my walls.

Love your birdie decals! So cute!

Just last week, I put a little vinyl snail on the baseboard behind the door in my kids' bathroom. I LOVE him. And I especially love the folks that come out of the bathroom and talk about him after seeing him (you only see him if you shut the door, and you only shut the door if...) Plus, I'm pretty sure he distracts people from looking at the floor and noticing the dust bunnies and other random kid-like artifacts.

Can you make this 100 days instead of 31? B/C I'm totally digging it!

(fyi-this is the jessica that emailed you the other day w/ the neighbors and the 9 halved doors that went to the garbage.)

We have this little sliver of space- the end of the wall separating the family room from the hall to the guest room. Not enough room to really hang anything... or at least I thought. I had a little frame collecting dust and it fits perfectly in that spot- I put a photo of our beloved pooch who passed away last summer and I love that we all can see it all the time and think of her :)

Absolutely precious! I'm going to hang a mirror on a curtain rod today...I've been looking for the perfect place for it forever, and now (thanks to you) I found it!!!

Those birds are absolutely adorable.

Oh...I was also going to say that I love how now matter what house you're living in it ALWAYS looks like a home. If I had more caffeine in me I'd elaborate and say that better...but you get the idea.

Oh how I wish I had lots of pictures to show you. Just visited a girlfriend last weekend who lives in San Antonio. She's a genius when it comes to little unexpected touches like this. I definitely have to get in gear and work on it!

OOOOOH, those birdies are SO CUTE.

Our house leans a little masculine to add something that adorable yet, but I'm working on it.

I like to hang little items next to the light switch. We have a little plaque that my sister gave us for a wedding gift that says "two shall become one" and it has hung next to or above the light switch in our bedroom in every house that we've lived in since our wedding day.

love the little birds!

I stamp the inside of my mirrors with fun little themes, right now I have a v of flying birds, but I can wipe it off anytime.

I also like to hang something over my doors

I love the bird that looks like it's sitting on the curtain rod!

I really, really, really need to order some of those inspirational plates!

When is the little extra too much, though? I think I'd have a hard time stopping.

In my last home there was no backsplash above the stove so I hung three oversized letters spelling "EAT" there. It gave the kitchen it's personality.
Love all your little birds and the little frame between the bed and lamp. Adorable! Janell

I am really loving this series!! It is almost hard not to just spend all day shifting things around and sprucing up my house! :) My husband is in the Coast Guard and has been gone for a few months, coming home next month! This is a Perfect time for me to change little things around without spending extra cash and making our place more home-y. So all that to say...Thank you for posting this series :)

I think this might be my favorite tip so far. I've enjoyed all of them, but this one is definitely my favorite.

You know what? I would love to see other people link about this same type of thing, just to give us ideas!

I love love your cute little birds you have in different spots. So cute. :) I have a heavy pewter cookie mold over the kitchen door. T wired it up there pretty good...but it would not be a pleasant experience to have it fall on your head. Guess that would make me a bad hostess. :s

I love your little touches!

And, if you recall, where did you get the fabric for the curtains (or the curtains) in that last picture?

This series is fantastic. Thanks for inspiring us all!

I love this idea!!

I love all the ideas in the 31 days...but this one is something I hadn't thought of. So simple, but what a BIG difference it makes in creating a personalized home!

Off to my stash to see what I can find...

Thanks!!

oh, how I'd love to do this! We have SO much 'dead space' just nothing to fill it with! Our walls often feel like a blank canvas with 'spots' here and there. It's really a $ issue. It's hard to be patient getting one piece at a time. It will come together eventually and I'll have these 31 days to refer to. Great ideas - itching to implement them someday!

where are all your sweet birdie vinyls from?

Danielle @ Transforming Home said...

I like hanging things on doors. They seem like such wasted space! A have a big spoon, fork, and knife on our pantry door, and our "family rules" hanging on our basement door. I have a new project for the bedroom doors coming up....

Danielle @ Transforming Home said...

By the way, LOVE the birdies! So cute and tons of personality.

Kristen @ Moms Sharpening Moms said...

What an awesome thought! I so could do this in a hundred different places. Your creativity knows no limits!!

Do you happen to know where you found that fabric that is in the 3rd to the bottom picture and the last picture of your post? I would love to get my hands on some of that! GORGEOUS!!

Everytime I find SOMEthing new to do. I would love to have a bigger place to be able to to all of it, but some of the ideas I see are so simple and something I CAN do. Thanks for so many fun ideas that are easy, simple and even I can do them. Love all the pictures.

Lindsay @ Makely said...

I definitely need to work on this! Still trying to fill in the big spaces so I'll know where the small ones are.

The Nester said...

The colorful fabric is from....wait for it....walmart. $1 yard. 4 or 5 years ago.

birds are from Target--just a few months ago.
