Layering is one of the easiest design techniques to copy. I find that lots of times we forget that we can put pretty stuff in front of other pretty stuff and it just enhances all of our favorite stuff.
I'm pretty sure that layering is my favorite method to work as many of my favorite things as I can into a room. I LOVE to layer!
To me layers create a cozy feeling.
You can use your much loved dishes and books and lamps and photos and art all in one place.
If you are renting, layering is a fast way to add texture and a focal point to a big empty wall.
And of course, you are never committed to one look.
Pillows can be layered.

PS, the Yard Sale is starting at 8am NOT 7am like I told some of you. It is DARK at 7--let's wait until 8!
And again, to get my address you have to PROVE you are a real person who is normal. I am as serious as a heart attack. Giving me the school you went to here does not prove you are real. Hate me. I would just publish my address here if I could totally trust the world. As I have a china hutch for the first time ever, I am working on layering! And making sure I can still see the "behind" things that I want to while still getting the things I need to store in also! I'm not sure I've done much of it elsewhere, hmm ... going to think about it and look around.
Oh, I know, with all my "vintage" wallpaper, EVERYTHING looks like another layer! ha ha!

From Smithfield to Charlotte NC is too far to drive for a yard sale but it sounds fun! Hope you sell all your unwanted stuff.
So glad to see safety comes before making a buck! Really, some people never stop to think this wonderful world we live i, unfortunately does have a few crazys lurking about. Better safe than sorry!! Wish I loved closer, I'd be there in a minute!!

"Layers"...yes! Isn't it funny how sometimes you know there's a reason why things look good but you can't quite pin it down? Layers....got it.
P.S. I'm with you on the safety thing. I wouldn't give out my address to the entire internet world either. You're smart...
I am learning to try stuff with layering...that is such a good tip. I think for awhile, I was just sort of lining my things up the way a preschooler would line his toy soldiers up. Not so cool.
I don't blame you for being a stickler about making sure people who come to the sale are not psychos. Whether you have children or not, you can never be too safe. I think it's sweet of YOU to go through the trouble at all to invite readers to come and dig through your (cast-off) treasures. ;) I'm not sure I'd be as brave!
I love the look of layering, but can't ever seem to get it to look right. I just don't have that skill. ;) I need someone with fresh eyes, but none of my friends apparently have that skill either. ha!

Nester - I have an idea. You should skip the yard sale where people bargain with you and sell tickets to an on-line yard sale. I think you could make a ton of $ - look at all the people who want to come to your yardsale but cant. I would buy a ticket!

You're absolutely right about layering. It seems to work especially well now, when everyone is decorating for the season and holidays. I am going to look around my house this weekend and tweak some table and chest tops.
You are the QUEEN of layering. Seriously. This is really a great tip, and just looking at your pictures makes me want to do more of it.
Good for you with your "safety first" attitude re: the yard sale. Unfortunately, this world really does have some crazies in it. You don't want to be paranoid, I know, but you really DO have to be careful. I think your lighthearted but serious approach is a good one.

Oh man! I feel like a dork for not thinking about layering! It's so obvious to me now. But I guess this is why you're the expert; you think of these things!
Cake is good in layers. And pie. Or cheesecake. Or dirt on the kitchen floor layered with dead leaves and worms, compliments of children layered in mud. Except that's not so good. ;)
Actually, I like layering stuff when I "decorate". I put the most breakable stuff in the back and the least in the front to act as bodyguards.

I STINK at layering. I always have a million different ideas going, then I decide they all look like a dog's hind leg and pull it all down. I think I'm just too picky. And my mantle...ugh, it is the bane of my existence! Half the time it LITERALLY has NOTHING on it. If you saw it, Nester, you're poor eyes would probably just fall on out of the sockets. LOL-I love the layering look and I think part of the problem is that most of us buy things that are all the same size. To layer you need BIG stuff to put in the back,and be honest with yourself-how much really BIT stuff have you been brave enough to hoist up there? Yeah, me too! LOL!
Then you need little stuff, odd shaped stuff, stuff on pedestals...I think what makes Nester so succesful is that she generally goes with a few basic colors and anything she sees that fits those colors, she goes ahead and picks it up, even if it's huge, or tiny, or oddly shaped.
That's my hypothesis anyway!
I'm gonna go dig out my white platter to put behind my red canisters in front of my mango yellow wall...
What do you do with all those cute pillows that you pile on the couch when your husband comes in and stacks them all in one place? That's what mine does. So frustrating.

good word on layering. this is something i haven't thought much about. can't wait to try it out. i saw the cutest cream berry wreath at targe' tonight that looked so nestery. it was twenty dolla. maybe it will go on clearance.

Hello sweet Nester - I really appreciate this post. I've just recently understood the reasoning behind "layering" my shelves. Particularly my entertainment center in the living room. I've always been the type of person who thought it was pleasing to the eye to have things symmetrical. Maybe one or two things on a shelf. Groupings? What was that? It wasn't until I finally gave in to a few blogger friends who encouraged me to try it that I did. Low and behold, to my surprise and utter shock I loved the look! I layered things from the back of the shelf to the front. It looks way better.
