The Ultimate Tassel Tutorial

It's here. I can hardly believe it. Two weeks ago I had the bright idea to do a Tassel Tutorial, an Ultimate Guide to How to make Tassels, more than just a simple post about how to make a tassel but an in depth resource that touches on all aspects of decorative tassel making.

After selling tassels in craft shows, etsy, to boutiques, and wholesaling to DaySpring I'm finally ready to pass all my know how on to you. This is something so near and dear to my heart. When I started tasseling, I had to just figure out what worked. Over the last 6 or 7 years, I've perfected the methods and have not grown tired of the process of making tassels.

These are not your grandmother's curtain tie backs. These are handmade decorator's tassels complete with personality and full of seduction. Once you see them, you want them all and once you learn how to make them, it opens up a new world of possibilities. Your friends will wish it were their birthday every month so they could get a new tassel from you.

I tell you all my secrets. Where I shop for all the materials, what to look for and of course there are 3 detailed tassel tutorials. Even the self-proclaimed non crafty will be inspired.

By the end of the book, you will know how to make this beautiful bird house tassel. But, even better than that, you will have all the knowledge that you need to be able to build on the methods to come up with your own creative designs. It's one thing to be able to make a replica, it's another thing to have to know how to make any kind of tassel you want. And that was my goal--to teach you enough methods that you can mix and match them to create an endless supply of unique tassels.

The ebook is 103 pages and has just about as many photos. There is a section about how I started tasseling and a section dedicated to tassel sellers. Plus loads of photos.

Thanks so much for sticking with me through this process. I did this ebook all by myself. Although it may look like a caveman was my graphic designer and that I used Abraham Lincoln's computer, I promise, it was all me. And that means it will be full of grammatical errors, and lacking cute graphics. But, I opted to not worry about that for the first edition in order to get the information to you in time for you to make tassels for Christmas. Thanks for understanding. I promise, the content makes up for the lack in design. And, it's a big file due to all the photos and me not knowing exactly what I'm doing give it a couple of minutes to download. Thanks for putting up with me.

During our move last week Hubs forgot my beloved Nester tassel. THE HORROR!

It was hanging from chandelier in my office (ahem dining room). I ran back over to old house and snatched my precious before it was too late.

Tassel is now safe home with me and will be my good luck charm in my new office (ahem dining room).

You're hilarious. I'm not buying it, but that's not because I don't think it'd be awesome. It's because tassels aren't my personal style. But I'm sure it's lovely, and you're very inspiring, by the way. I have living room curtains I actually like because of you...even if they are a giant table cloth and 2000 safety pins.

Amanda said...

Oh, I hope that came out right. I meant hilarious in a very good way, not in a condescending way.

downloaded, printed and into page protectors so I can look, read, and study, (Maybe drool) and still keep it safe. Thank you very much. It was well worth the time it took to download. You are very sweet to offer this and share your talent. May God Bless You.

I purchased earlier today. I will be your true test to tassels. In all honesty I have absolutely zero talent at crafting and I've tried it all. My stuff turns out like I've tried to botch it on purpose for a laugh and it isn't so. I will read over several times prior to making my first but I love this ebook and my thanks to you for helping me develop something in myself that I have been yearning to do.... just once!!!

Reeese, I made it on a mac and many have downloaded it as have I--it's fine!

I've been going nuts trying to figure out what to give some very special people in our lives. As soon as I saw this, I knew it was the solution! I'm not sure I would have actually put it all together, except that you showed the birdhouse tassel, and my MIL, who I have a horrible time shopping for, has decorated her dining room with birdhouses =)

Thank you so much - I can't wait till it's done downloading so I can start playing!

I bought it last night and have been sooo busy I haven't been able to look through it yet! but I'm so excited to and will be making a load of tassles for Christmas :)

This is probably the dumbest question ever, but when you talked about the bullion fringe it had a picture of a thread on top and bottom of the fringe. Do you pull off the bottom thread or just leave it that way? Okay, I feel like a complete idiot for not knowing.

~Jenn

The Nester said...

Jenn, I'm not sure which photo you are referring to--page? BUT, lots of fringe comes with a loose thread on one end that you pull out when you get it, it will unravel if you don't. They put it there to keep the fringe flat and together during shipping.

So yes, pull it out~

I just purchased and I am so computer dumb!! For some reason it won't download properly and gets half way through and then stops! It is probably me! Can't wait to read it- love all your ideas and they are going to make great Christmas gifts. Thank you!!!

Does the tutorial include sources and where to purchase the necessary supplies?

Susan said...

thank you! mine seems to be downloading perfectly. I've been making some tassels for awhile, but had to have your ebook because I just love your tassels. Now if I could just find some of those roosters and bunny's!!! I've been looking for them forever. Hoping your ebook gives tips on where to find them

Anonymous said...

Go Nester! I'll be back to buy on payday.

The Nester said...

Kathy, yes, I give sources for where I shop for my fringe and toppers and the best places I've found to buy everything. And what to look for when you buy.

Anonymous said...

Thanks so much Nester! I was talking about the large roll of white cotton bullion on page 26. In some places it looks to have two stitches and in other places it looks like the bottom stitch is removed and it is fluffy. I'm just not very familiar with fringe and have A LOT to learn, but how fun it will be! Thanks again... love the e-book!

~Jenn

I downloaded the tassel book and for some reason I can't open it! I am so excited to about this e-book and can't wait to make my first tassel! Nester! Please help! If it won't work at my house, Im going to try to download at work- then I have to figure out how to transfer it to my house! Can't wait!!!

Carol said...

Great job Nester. Beautiful pictures. (Just a couple of spelling errors - sorry I used to be a editor. It's something I can't help but notice).

Now you need to set up a Flickr group for all of us to upload pictures of our Nesterized-tassels!

The Nester said...

Jenn, yes, that's exactly what that is on page 26--but it's not bullion fringe, not that you could tell from that photo. It's a looped chinelle fringe--and it get's really poofy when you unravel the little thread.

Don't forget, you can hit the + and - signs at the top of the screen on the ebook to look really closely at the photos.

Carol, are you rubbing in my spellin errors? :} Seriously, I would normally NEVER put something out like this with so many eros but I wanded you al to have it rite now sew I thougt it be okey.

The Nester said...

PS:

Carol, a flickr group?!

I am SO doing that--what a great idea, I thought about a linky party but flickr for non bloggers!

thank you!

Just bought the book and waiting on it to download. I have a request..............can you post a tutorial on how to sell something within your post like you did for your book. I can't figure it out for the life of me. I also saw the same thing on Shabby Chic Cottage's blog this morning as well. How are yall doing that?

Polly@MakeMineBeautiful said...

Ok, I'm back. I just read gthe whole book (while as my husband says, depriving him of breakfast!). He'll get over it.
I have to tell ya, the instructions are so good and thorough. I've had boxes and boxes of premade tassels for years and had no clue what to do with them (bought at an estate sale). Also, since I've had a drapery workroom for years, I've accumulated tons of trims and fringes. SO, now I can finally put them all to use. I'm so excited. I have so many things I can use for toppers that I never even gave a second thought.

Thanks for the inspiration!!!

Hey there! Stopping by from a link I found on "A Familiar Path" (Melissa Stover's Blog: http://www.afamiliarpath.com/2009/11/links.html).

I had never thought to make tassels before, but as a work-at-home mom I love supporting other women who use their brilliance online to make a living. So I'll go buy it now :) Best of luck to you in your (apparently already well received) endeavor!
