For those of you thinking that you don't want to read a post with way too many photos and grammatical errors, I apologize.
I have a problem in this rental house that I've never really had before. Don't get me wrong. It's a great problem to have. Too much space. Add in the fact that this house had all beige walls when we moved in and it seemed like a big, empty doctor's office. I did paint some of the walls which of course makes a huge difference. Now it's a big empty doctor's office with color on the walls. I knew I needed some texture and pattern to fill up this space and a great way to accomplish that is with decorator's tables. I have three in my house...
I did not pay for any of these. One, I found on the side of the road and carried it in my 3 inch heels to the back of my SUV. I traded a smaller table with my mom for another and then, I mentioned to my mother in law that I wish I had 20 round tables and she promptly told me that she had one that she wasn't using.
I am willing to show you my very unfinished tables because I love and trust you. However, if any of you real, live, professional designer types are reading this, please stop now and go dust your majolica or make sure there's no fingerprints on your leaded glass cabinet doors. I don't need anybody telling me "you can't do that". Which is exactly what a fabric lady told me about my table fabric (because I used a large dot with a small dot--oh stop the world). Well, FYI, if anyone tells me not to "do that" and it involves something with my house, I drop everything and immediately go do that thing. (paraphrased and adapted from Dwight Schrute)
Okay, now that we've sifted out the fluff,
If you don't already have a round table somewhere you can look on craigslist (at any given time they have at least 10 listed in my area), or at a yard sale or ask around. I would not pay over $30 for one. And, these can just be old ugly small dining tables. I like the 36-44 inch tables but, my sister has a 30 inch and it's nice too. Here's what mine look like naked and look how much room there is to store junk underneath! I just said naked. I hope I don't get weirdos on my blog now. This is so not what they are looking for.
Now for the fabric. I LOVE fabric of all types. The more pattern the merrier! You can use 4 different fabrics for each table. I like to try to use fabrics that I can use in more than one room of my house. I love to move furniture so, it's nice to be able to use these tables in many places. You really need to know how to sew or barter with someone who does for this project. I know that can be a pain but, it's so worth it. You can get away with only sewing the square topper. As a matter of fact, that's all I do and I can sew. I just have better things to do with my time like move furniture, spray paint frames, and build lego spacestations.
For each table you need:
(2) 54" squares of fabric that you love. These will be the front and back of the topper.
1/2 yard of fabric cut into 4" strips for the cording along the edge of the topper.
3 yards or more of the fabric for the skirt.
For the topper, always do a front and back. I didn't for my first one and I have regretted it ever since. Sad.
Then, I got smart and figured if I was gonna line it, it should be with something I can use when I get sick of looking at flowers or when I want to hide that coffee stain.
Look how fun!Look how sweet! You can even see the lining of the one in my sister's room. Love it!
And, embarrassing as it is, I don't even sew the skirt underneath. I just lay a big ole piece of fabric on top and kind of play with it until it looks like a skirt. Here's where the fabric ends--but, it's on the side so no one knows.
The one I did for my sister is only draped fabric too. She probably had 4 yards so it draped very nicely. And now, I am revealing way too much. Usually, I turn the edges under but, this is what it looked like this morning. Raw edges, a wire, and not to mention dirty, ugly carpet. But, it still looks good to me. Maybe it's not 100% perfect but, I'd give it a good 90%. If I waited until I could do a perfect job, it would never get done. Just remember, it doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful.
Pretty, cheap space filler

I have two! I do love the "front and back" suggestion for the topper...Brillant!
Wow, this easy how-to post makes me think I could actually do this myself! Good thing you're my sister and I don't have to. Ahhh...all those years of wanting you to PLAY Barbies with me instead of just decorating their houses...its payback time.
you are so clever and creative and have such a great eye for fabrics and the thing that makes me know we could be friends, is that you're not a perfectionist. 90 %is always good enough for me.
Love it! I just got a sewing machine for Christmas and as soon as I can figure out how to thread the thing, I am making those toppers- and lining them with contrasting fabric; what brilliance:-)
I also love the window treatments in your family room with the tassles... if you see that I have been by your site 4,329 times don't be alarmed- I am just checking out those windows for inspiration!
I just love all of your ideas! I love that you love doing it, and that you are so excited about it...
Thanks for trying to e-mail me. I am going to paint my, uh, I don't even know what it is called...cupboards under my sink in my bathroom...upstairs in the black. It is ugly now and I want to do the black with light tan walls (I live in the Adirondacks, so a lot of my rooms follow that theme) with bear and moose. The double sink counter right now is (try not to gag) BRIGHT mauve, so we will replace that. I think it will look nice (?)
You did a great job. Each of your tables look amazing and have that professional feel to them. It's such a great way to dress-up any room. Thanks for "tipping" us :)
I've got a semi-decorating question for you. Do you know of a good place or good brand of bed sheets? We really need to replace ours ASAP and I want to find some that have some sort of print that's not too "old lady" and are good quality. And I also don't want to spend a fortune. Have any ideas?
Thanks!
Dear Nester,
I don't sew. Okay, I once sewed a halloween costume. It was a dalmation for my then 4 yo. I sewed felt dots onto a white hooded sweatshirt for my son. Oh, and felt puppy dog ears. It's very Botticelli.
Can't I use the fake sew, iron stuff and make the bottom look okay?
I'm seeking permission. Please say yes. If no, can you please do a blog that will teach me how to thread my bibbidy-bobbidy-boo? I have a sewing machine, and no one to teach me how to use it.
Your fan,
City Girl from LWM3B
ps - If I send you a plane ticket to the Arctic Tundra will you come help me shop, decorate, move furniture, spray picture frames and thread my bibbidy-bobbidy-boo? Pack warm.
pss - Am I the only one who noticed your living room is the same color as your blog scheme?
lwm3b-I told her that her blog is her 5th bedroom...goes perfectly with the rest of her house. Nice observation :)
Hi!
Megan, I emailed you. The answer--even the queen of cheap has buttery soft sheets. I pay less than $100 and keep them for years. And am happy with them every night. Bed Bath and Beyond.
Life, yes, you can use the iron on sew stuff for the bottom of the skirt. But for the topper you really have to sew. It goes very fast and is so forgiving. If you can lace up your machine and turn it on (heavy duty needle please) then it takes less than an hour start to finish for the whole topper.
Yes, send me a ticket and I'm there!
Oh, if I had lots of money, I would have wonderful rich fabrics all over my house. Mostly, I disguise with doillies. Your home is so beautiful!
Can I just buy the fabric and have my sweet friend do one for me???
You make me laugh. I love your writing humor! You also have wonderful ideas- someday when I get a realy dining set, I will use my current table WITHOUT the leaves to make a decorative table. I don't know where I'll put it but I'll find a place...somewhere.
...and by "realy" I meant "Real."
Oh, my. Total cuteness. Total and complete.
Doctor's office, my foot.
I love the lamp, by the way... and the dots, both big and small. :)
Fabric makes such a huge difference in a house, don't you think? And that is my weak point. I'm not perfectionistic enough to be a good sewer, and fabric stores overwhelm me. My friends who love fabric say it's "relaxing" to them. So, oh, well. I buy my curtains or drape quilts over rods. But I would dearly love a couple of those tables in my living room... maybe I could just do that. Oh, but there's that darned fabric store...
Good job, you.
Wow! Your house is spectacular! Glad I found your blog...
Love how EASY you make it look! LOVE how you did those double sided top ones!
I love your attitude and decorating! And I love that you quoted Dwight Schrute!
Thanks for all of the table info. I have a table that I may try to use somewhere but it's on the larger side-may be too big.
I wanted to ask you what color paint you used in the first pic? It's beautiful!
Dear Nester:
I found the best table with fabric on it. but instead of the glass on after the fabric they had a wooden piece that looked like an upside down kings crown. it fit ontop of the table and than they put the glass over top. I have been searching for this wood piece. Ever heard of it? Vienna 410-808-4972. thanks

That is such a great idea! I need to find a nice round table and try to sew a topper. I love your fabrics and how the different materials works together so nicely!
Great idea and great blog...I'm all new to this. Love this idea, but needed to do mine with a twist.
My wonderful hubby and I live in a small one bedroom condo...but we're at the beach;-) Anyways, storage is limited, so I got this idea from my mom, who got it from someone else.
Get a new plastic outdoor trash can(got mine at Lowe's for $13, plus a square piece of plywood $10?). I just made sure the wood was larger then the trash can. Round the corners of the plywood a bit, mine aren't perfect, sand alittle or paint wood if you so desire...I didn't. Add fabric just like you would for a table and you have your cheap filler table/trash can.
As I stated above, we are limited on storage, so one is filled with our extra blankets/comforters and the other is filled with our sheets.
I am kicking myself for not buying a round table at a yard sale today! It would have been absolutely perfect for this! I have a big, empty window with nothing in front of it in my family room, and this idea would have filled it up so nicely! Oh, grrr! By the way, I am in love with your blog. Thank you!
