30 Minute Makeover: Pillows

I am all about pillows. I promise, you can't have too many. Who doesn't love a fluffy pillow filling the corners of sofas, chairs, beds, and benches? Once I buy a pillow, I will never let it go. But, sometimes, I get tired of the pattern or the color or sometimes my boys spill grape juice on one or maybe the dog got a hold of one for a minute. Then, there's the time I just had a temporary period of insanity when I thought it would be a good idea to purchase a pillow containing a picture of a dog dressed like George Washington. So, what's a girl to do? Here's a little trick I came up with. As long as your pillows have fringe on the edges, you can do it too!

Go find some scrap fabric that you love, and cut it {or rip it} to the size of your pillow. A few years ago, when I was redoing our master bedroom, I found lots of pillow scraps for $1. Most of them were remnants from fancy, expensive fabric that the store sold up in the front, where the rich people shop. I always shopped in the back of the store with the trolls and Quasimodo and the Elephant Woman. We all get along really great. You'd be surprised at Quasimodo's sense of style.

Anyway, most of the scraps were too small to make front and back for 2 pillows. And, there was no way I was going to spend $40 a yard for more matching fabric. But, I have this thing about pairs. I must have them. So, I would do the front of two pillows in one fabric and the back of them in another fabric. Well, this started because of how cheap I am--it is continuing because it has actually worked out great. Now, it's like I get 2 pillows in one! All I have to do is turn the pillow over and ta-da, another pillow!

So, if you have an old sorry pillow that has some full brush fringe on the edges go get it now! Also, I'm sure you have figured out that I am not above buying these from Goodwill and yard sales. Even Hobby Lobby and TJ Maxx have these on major clearance from time to time.

Go dig out your old fashioned needle and thread. Or, if you are super lazy, you could use your glue gun. FYI, even I opted for the needle and thread on this one. Get your two fabrics that you are in love with , one for each side and make sure they are exactly {in my language exact is never exact but, you get the idea} the same size as the fabric that is showing on the old, rejected pillow. Line your fabric up on one side and start stitching away. I guess if you are really talented you could sew both sides at once. I did one at a time. Make sure you sew the fabric as close to the edge and the fringe as possible. Once you are done, that fluffy fringe will cover up any raw edges and stitches.
Here's what it looks like if you molest your pillow and look really close. I promise, no one will ever do this. If someone does, they are a pervert .
Once the fringe is in its natural place, it will hide that stitch! Lovely! Live with it, soil it, rinse, and repeat.
Look how pretty she looks. And no one would ever guess that she had a makeover. No Dr. 90210 needed here.

How genius!!! I never thought to do that and I have LOTS of pillows in my attic that I'm not using and often see fabric that I wish I could have as a pillow. I'm not good with sewing, but I could definitely try this! I believe this is my favorite post from you yet. You could write a book on all your decorating short cuts on a budget. Now, I'm going to look at my old pillows in a new way and see what I can come up with. Thanks for the tip!

I just wanted to pop over to say thank you for taking time to read my blog, and for leaving such a lovely comment. Your words were so tender and so kind, and I appreciate your thoughfulness both in reading and responding.

I've secretly lurked here for a little while, and really enjoy your creativity and resourcefulness. That coffee and crying and long talk you mentioned would be lovely if taken while tucked away in a corner of your beautifully decorated home. What I wouldn't give for an ounce of what you've got!

Thank you again...
Amanda

Totally awesome idea! I thought you had sewn the pillows with new fringe. -That can be difficult. I have never thought of just sneaking a new square on the top like that. You are a genius.

Slightly off topic for this post ... but I've noticed that the wall of your house are a soft gold/pale beige color with white trim. I love the look, and am getting ready to repaint. Could you share your favorite paint colors?

The Nester said...

Yes! Tracie, the most glorious, wonderful, warm, inviting, goes with everything, can't go wrong color is:

TOBACCO ROAD

and, it's discontinued. It's a duron color, it think. I now get it color matched at home depot. I think if you go to duron or sherwin williams they can look it up and make it. In a few days, I'll post the Home Depot code if you want to have them mix you up a batch. I am madly in love with this color. It works everywhere!

I absolutely LOVE your blog!!! What great ideas for a fellow "lazy" decorator like myself! Thanks for the inspiration!!

I'm loving these cheap and easy ideas that don't require sewing skill. I'd love to add more softness to my home with window treatments and pillows and such, but the cost and my inability to sew has been limiting me.

Keep the ideas coming!

Hooray! I'm inspired--I just need to get pillows with fringe now. I made a lot of mine from two dinner sized cloth napkins I stitched together (also not a lot of sewing involved--but some stuffing!).

And for what it's worth, I kind of liked the George Washington dog pillow. He'd go very well with the dogs playing poker painting :).

Thanks for the fabulous tutorial--and all the photos!

This is a great idea. Not sure what you have against nicely dressed dogs though. My first visit to your blog and I like it a lot - I will be back to check it out some more.

Perfect. I just purchased pillows with fringe, but wasn't sure if a pillow slip-cover would look okay over it. I've got to try this!

I LOVE it!! What a great idea!! Do you think it would work on some pillows that don't have fringe and then maybe, just maybe I could glue (home girl don't sew) the fringe OVER the seam??

Great ideas ~ I stalk you every day to see what goodness you have posted!! :)

Oh I love it! Thank you for the motivation/inspiration!

Nester, you are speaking my language! I love this!

Since I don't sew, I often feel like I'm decorating-disabled, especially since I'm too cheap to pay someone else to sew a pillow for me.

But what you did? I can do. Thanks for the inspiration!

Quasimodo. Hah! His face rings a bell. Did you ever hear that joke?

My husband came downstairs while your music was playing and he looked at me curiously and I said, "The Nester" and he was all impressed that you were singing that song.

He is not always so bright.

Also? I love the dog wearing ruffles. Love it.

Best idea ever! Wait, no, I think I said that about your last idea. Or maybe it was the one before that. Oh well, they are ALL great ideas. I never thought about doing this. I always think I have to completely redo pillow covers. That is very expensive. I hate spending money. I think I'll do it your way from now on.

P.S. Those pillows are gorgeous and I love the colors.

I have been wanting to decorate with pillows and may just have to try this. But I don't have any with fringe. Must remedy that!

Aubrey said...

I've never been a big fan of fringe, but now I think I'll have to convert--just to do an awesome makeover on something. Where do you come up with all this stuff? It's one thing to redo something for cheap, but it's another to redo something for cheap AND make it look good AND professional. Thanks yet again for sharing some of your genius.

Life is so...well, unfair. I often say wistfully, "I long for beauty and order." and don't understand why people laugh. Then someone like you does it without trying. Maybe if I hang around this blog awhile??

I too only shop the backs of the store...in Target you will find me roaming the endcaps (you know those sale endcaps), I'll have to keep an eye out for Quisimodo!! Thanks for sharing your really great ideas (and personal stuff too).

Great blog. I just found you.
