My favorite go to color in the entire universe is...
Tobacco Road
It's a discontinued color from DURON but, they can still mix it for you. I even called to make sure because I didn't want of riot of Tobacco Road deprived cute moms in high heals with paint brushes showing up at my door. The paint color/number is 8214. I considered using that number for all of my PINs and secret codes in the world but, I was afraid that someone would figure it out.I thought I would sprinkle in some photos of rooms with Tobacco Road that I found on the internet. I completely stole them so, if one is yours and you want it off, let me know and your wish is my command.

In the boy's room at the old nest...

Here it is in a stranger's great room, see how nice it looks with white trim?

Ahh, Tobacco Road in some stranger's kitchen...

Here it is in someones lovely dining room. See how much lighter it looks? It all depends on the time of day and how many windows you have....LOVE !

Here it is right now in my messy, neglected family room only on two walls, all my other walls are 400 feet high and I'm not painting them, but if I did, they would be TR...
Going to the Duron store is the best way to get the color. If you don't have one or are too cheap, here's a photo of my can from Lowes home improvement. It's not exact but pretty close. This is a great color because it goes with just about anything. Black furniture and white furniture look especially wonderful against it.
The only thing I don't like it with is wood that has pinky undertones like the 'maple' in my kitchen. I had to use a dark chocolate brown to offset that wood and warm it up. I just had it color matched to some sample that I had.
If anyone cares what this color is just click on that picture down there. That's the Lowe's recipe. But, that color's not gonna change your life like Tobacco Road will.
Another nice color that I am currently in love with is Svelte Sage. It's a Sherwin Williams color #6164. Also not my PIN. This Svelte color is so lovely. I used it in my living room after falling in love with my sister's color: Oyster Bay #6206--not her PIN. Hers is much more true to the robin's egg blue that we all know and love. If that's what you are after, you will love her delicious color.
I know that for me, as much as I love that blue, I need to be surrounded by warm colors. Or else. Or else I will feel cold. And have to paint over the wall 47 times until the room is half it's original size and I finally figure out that I am only happy with warm. So, if you are like me and need warmth, just mosey on over a few pages in the color wheel and get the same feeling only warmer. Here's a comparison, look at the middle two colors: emily, and me...
emily's color: Oyster Bay
my color: Svelte Sage
I combined TR and SS in my dining room and painted that little piece of wall on our tray ceiling SS too. It looks good enough for me. Just so you know, if this were my house I would do some fun big ol' stripes or a pattern or something but, I feel like I need to keep that to a minimum. You know, just so you don't think that I 'm boring or not daring or anything.
PS, if you go to the DURON site they have a coupon for a new paint that I know nothing about.

Oh how I've missed Nester posts lying in my death bed.....
such a great color! I'm not aware of a Duron around here, but we do have a Sherwin-Williams, and they have three colors all one chip--Wool Skein, Relaxed Khaki, and Universal Khaki. I could paint every room those 3 colors.
Wouldn't you love to have a job naming paint colors? Or lipstick?
You write this post now??? Just after I've finished painting my entire hallway with SW's bauhaus buff??? Ah well...I'm just going to have to live with the painty discord in my house until I get the hankerin' to change the color again next winter.
I think I might object to your using my oyster bay photo on your blog. I think it unfair that my oyster bay debut is of a half decorated plate wall, while your svelte...whatever is the backdrop to a beautifully nested sitting room.
I think I might sue you. Or I could just send you a better photo. I'll make you wait to find out which route I choose to take.
Love these colors! Such a shame my poor husband thinks he has retired from painting for awhile after last week's marathon painting of our daughters' room.
I can see his days back on the ladder are on the horizon:-)
I love tobacco road. I had it in the dining and living rooms in my old house. They are now in my two story living room and entry way. Plantation beige is my other favorite. It is just a couple of shades lighter than tobacco road. My kitchen and family room are this color. Oh and my master bedroom is svelte sage. I am sure that I misspelled that. I love your blog. You have great taste and a fun way of displaying it!
Jennie
Love, love that color! I looked for that 5 years ago after my realtor told me that is what she used. She couldn't remember the brand, though. So... I ended up using Benjamin Moore's historical colors - Crown Point Sand and Northampton Putty. They are very close and I do love them. They are warm (I like the warm colors, too) and seem to go with everything. I also have B. Moore's Clinton Brown in my dining room - very chocolate-y.
Our next painting job is my 13-year-old daughter's room. It is currently a pale apple green and she now wants it blue. Since I'm the painter around here, that little task will wait until summertime.
Girl, I just need to fly you down here to get my house staged. I am working on your smoke and mirrors window treatments in my living room (I have 20 yds of silk fabric I'm hacking up right now - still looking for the trim). And I feel sure that if I'd gone with TR it would have already sold by now! ;-)
I love your corbels in the family room BTW (in the grouping with the family pics) - where do you think I could find some similar? I need a little height over some pictures in my room with 400 ft. ceilings. Pretty please! :-)
P.S. I think Emily's oyster bay would look spectacular with TR too.
love the photos. especially the one of your messy living room because i've begun to think that you are incredibly neat as well as talented in the interior decor department and it's making me jealous.
I love it. Thank you!
Our den and kitchen is Newport Tint (Porter Paint color but I buy Lowes brand paint.) But I think I am in love with Tobacco Road. Our dining room is a gold color that I absolutely hate but it's been that way for years. Maybe we'll finally paint it this summer! ;)
Our bedroom is Riesling, which is a nice sage green. I love warm colors, too.
And thanks for showing the messy photo. My house is like that most of the time!
first time commenter but been looking (NOT lurking!) since Meredith at LMS introduced you.
what a fascinating post. I find color tricky but worth the trouble.
Just repainted this winter to stage/sell this spring. Ended up with SW "chopstick" which is warm without looking too dirty or too yellow, and finally happy. Oak floors, white trim, and buttermilk-y cabinets. One accent wall in Sears "Pueblo Gold" which is nothing like a Pueblo, and nothing like gold.
fun blog, thank you!
deb meyers
oooooooh I love that...any chance you could send me a swatch?
I can hardly believe you posted the tobacco road color because just yesterday I was looking at the color on your walls and thinking how I love it and that I should probably try and email you and see what the color is and today here it is!!!
We don't have a Duron dealer within 100 miles of here so I will have to make do with the Lowes version. As soon as I paint it I'll send you some pics! Many Many Many thanks!
I'm with you, I must surround myself with warmth. Our furniture style preferences leave us a bit on the cold side -- modern, sleek, glass, chrome -- but a warm coating of paint and some colorful room accessories always do the trick. For us the color of choice is usually a warm shade of gray, most likely from Sherwin Williams, that looks fantastic with white trim.
It's interesting that the colors of your blog are pretty similar, huh?
My living/dining room is much the same shade. Only its' a different brand (behr). That must mean I'm doing something right, decor wise.
Your house is super warm. Love it.
That is a wonderful color! It is indeed perfect....great job :-)
In the picture of the color strips above "Oyster Bay" room, you can also see "Comfort Gray." I had this in my living room in my old house and it was a strange color that always got compliments. In certain lighting or with certain accessories, it looked gray, but with others, it was almost green. It was perfect for some curtains that came with the house! I would highly recommend it as well!
I'm still in shock after seeing this post! My bedroom has been Tobacco Road for about 3 years now with two areas in the room being Millet (I think you'd love this color too! It's about 1-2 shades lighter than Tobacco Road) Where I live KWAL is the vendor for TR - so maybe others will have a KWAL store too.I've been thinking of changing it but you've made me love it again! Dh will love you for making me love it! haha! I'm a total paint junky!Check out Shaker Beigh (gads sp?) by Benjamin Moore.
I love love love your style! If I send you a picture of a room could you give me some pointers?
You are a color Goddess!
I need help because I just might be color blind!!! No really I have found your wonderful blog just as we are moving into a new home and need to paint and all and make it our own. Thank you so much for all your wonderful advice and tips on everything!!!
I really appreciate you sharring the color you use and find to be a color that can go with just about anything. Thats so sweet of you to share and thoughtful!
I have a quick question....could this the color you mentioned go with this color sofa? http://www.raymourflanigan.com/catalog/details.asp?Cat_ID=9&ID=11300 I haven't a clue what to do with curtains either!!! I need help! We have a bay window and im not sure what to do with wondow treatments, do i or not?
Well thank you so much for all your tips again! I have found your site just a gem!
~momof4blessings =)
i love that color! and yes...i was familiar before i read your post! another favorite of mine is "cookie crumb", i think it's by glidden...more yummy goodness!
Gosh you make me want to paint! Beautiful color.
I love the color, I just painted my whole living area Caraway Seed by Valspar. It seems very similar. I also love warm colors. I have been looking for a new color for our Master Bedroom, I may give svelte sage a try.
I have a ?
Would you mind sharing where you got your boy's beds? We are currently shopping for a bed for our little guy, and want something like this with w/storage. And I love the red color.
You are a truly inspiring lady! I love your site, and am so glad I found it.
Keep the great ideas coming!
lovely,
thanks for sharing!
no Duran Stores in CA but we have Lowes, tried to copy the color recipe of your choc brown color but hard to tell if that last set of numbers start with 118 or 113.
Can you tell in person???
Oh and I would love to see the choc in your kitchen, I have maple cabinets and need some paint on my walls.
Great Blog and thanks for the visit. Yes, you have been picked. LOL
Check it out and you'll see what I mean.
http://keepitcheap.blogspot.com/
What a great color! I'm going to SW to buy a sample pot.
Your boys' room is gorgeous! Or should I say "masculine"? It puts the PBkids catalog to shame!
robyn,
yes, the last numbers are 113-1Y9.5
sister emily,
I'm sorry I didn't do your room justice! You are so right! It was the only photo I had that didn't look like the exact same color as what I have and we both know that they are so different!
sister honey bunch,
yes, they are basically the same colors on my blog. You are so observant! I am so predicable!
mommyhawk,
you don't want the beds. Trust me. They were made someplace in California. We waited 3 months for them. The store we purchased them from doesn't even carry them anymore. They are a PAIN to put together and most of the rails spit. But, the company was super nice and sent us new rails so fast. They are splitting to. FYI: Jonathan Boyd or something like that.
Everyone else, you all know so many beautiful colors! I have made a mental note {that otta last long} of each one and thank you for the photos of your rooms! You go girls! None of us are afraid of a little paint!
I love this paint color--can't believe they discontinued it! It looks a lot like the one I settled on in my family room after much trial and error--Eddie Bauer's "Pecan." We got it from Lowe's last year and have been slowly painting every room in the house with it. I did a post on it on my blog if anyone wants to see what it looks like:
http://hookedonhouses.wordpress.com/2008/01/30/before-after-crown-molding-magic/
Hope that helps anyone looking for a close substitute that is still available! -Julia K :-)
Last time I came to visit, your post was showing all the house chores you had to do... and as I saw your washer filled with clothes to be washed, I remembered {suddenly} that I had started the washer that very morning, and it was the afternoon, and I never moved my load to the dryer.
Today, I came to visit and as I remembered the last time I was here, I am now {suddenly} remembering that I started my washer this morning, and I haven't gone upstairs to put the load in the dryer...
do you see a pattern here???
PS.- need to come and visit more often, I LOVE the tips you give when it comes to decorating!
Your color choices great and your blog fantastic.
Heather
Nester -- and all others who have used Tobacco Road...my son's bedroom is small and fairly dark (and a horrid dark blue--why did I let him convince me to use that color?!) Would Tobacco Road darken things too much? (I'd have to do the Lowe's version, too)
I need/want WARMTH and light (feeling) paint in our 1949 house. (I just did our bathroom in a dark chocolate brown (!) I could pull it off in there because of all the white fixtures, trim and have accessorized in all whites).
Thanks!
Great colors!! I love that Tobacco Road, it looks identical to the "Blonde" that I use from Sherwin Williams! LOVE IT!
Okay, I know we're talking paint, but I can barely see some curtains in the "Svelte Sage" room that I don't think I've seen posted anywhere on your blog. Do share!
Love the Tobacco Road paint color and the sage. Do you think the TR color would be too dark in a basement? The trim is white but there are no windows in the family room, but plenty of artificial light. I also have a burgandy accent wall and was wondering if you thought the green would be good with that, the color there now looks pinky with the burgandy although I think it is supposed to be a taype. Any help would be appreciated.
Peggy
Great post. FUnny, interesting and I am so gonna do a door like your and hang it behind my couch. Can you come over and play? Please?
Oh, forgot to say I love the pictures too!
Oh, I see why you like that color so much. It looks so good. Your house is so lovely!
Oh yeah, TB is a great paint color. I know several people who have used it. I considered it too, but ended up with Whole Wheat in my house. You have great taste in paint! All those colors are nice. I'm a warm color person too.
Love that white cab. you found at the yardsale. I can so relate to your yardsaling high...boy howdy, I just about lose it when I'm out there trying to scope a bargain. The adrenaline rush!
Rhoda
I love the color, want it, bad.
But, I checked and we do not have a DURON dealer anywhere close. I see your labels say LOWE's. Can you help a dingbat like me figure this out...!
Hi all..
Ok, some of you are confused because I ramble on.
I got my paint color matched at lowes. I am too cheap to go to the Duron store.
The best way to get the truest color is to go to Duron and ask them to mix you some Tobacco Road. They will.
If for some reason you don't have a duron or, you are like me, you can click on the photo of my paint lid and copy down the code and give that to the paint guy at lowes and have him mix you some in olympic paint. The code would probably work in any paint but, if you are trying a different brand, you should tell them what you are trying to do and ask if that code will work.
The way I got the color in that bucket was by taking my old paint lid of the real tobacco road and having it color matched at LOWES.
Does this help?
Sorry I am so confusing. I confuse myself even!
Hey Nester,
I loved visiting your old nest and am enjoying seeing pictures of your new nest. Like you, I am obsessed with paint samples! I have all the fandecks I can get my hands on! I have a SW, a Benjamin Moore and a Behr one and I love them. I flip through them all the time and imagine rooms. I love the Tobacco Road, but never knew it existed. Sigh. My master bedroom is painted "sunset beige" from Behr and my kitchen is a barn red color, because you are right that maple cabinets are hard to match. Love them, but my beige did not work in there.
And yes, who names the paint? Would love that job!
Oooooeee! I'm excited! I just found you from Today's Creative Blog and I love it here! Adding you to my blogroll right now. And the paint thing--you may have just solved my problems. I've been really wanting that robin's egg blue for my bedroom, but I tend to not like cool colors once they are on the wall -- I'm in Oregon, and it's grey here a LOT, so warm colors are important. SO I'm going to whip out my handy-dandy Sherwin Williams fan deck and look for the sage color. Yay!
~Angela :-)
My husband and I are trying to decide on a color for our new townhome. We're undecided between a few Duron colors (Tobacco Road, Plantation Beige, Crisp Khaki). I've seen pictures of tobacco road, I was wondering if anyone had pictures of something painted in plantation beige. Any suggestions?
That's so funny! We have TR painted in our entire downstairs. I saw it at a model home and demanded to know that the paint color was--I got the code from kwal-howells (sp) but had it mixed at wal-mart w/the Kilz brand paint. Love the stuff so much, thinking of going with a slightly lighter tone for my upstairs since its a little bit shadier. Any blue suggestions for the kitchen?
I want to piant my kids bathroom a color. I have girls and boys. So it needs to fit both. The rugs have all colors and the shower curtain is blue and white. Any suggestions on colors? Yellow??
I have the perfect color it's called...umm.. hold on...oh, yeah, Tobacco Road.
Seriously, girl! it would work with all of that!!
Or chocolate brown if you have a window in there.
Hello, I love Tabacco Road, it is similiar to General Paint's "Crisp Kahki." I am in Canada and do not have access to that company you talk about. Is there anyway you can get me the color chip panel of the colors where SS is? We like a couple of those colors? Carey from Alberta
I have a quart of Tobacco Road from Kwal paint - is this the same color??? It looks a little more yellow on my wall, but maybe it's just the lighting? Or maybe it's a different color all together.
I want to paint our family room Tobacco Road and was curious what color you all us for the trim, (baseboards, crown moldings and door facings). Thanks
Hi faith, I had no way to contact you so I sure hope you check back here! I just left the color trim that was already there. If I were starting from scratch I would not do a bright white but a creamy white. Not too yellowy though. I haven't had to do trim for years so I don't have an exact name--I did a bakery a few years ago and it just turned out that the trim color we did in there was called "Bakery box white" and it was a great choice!
Clear as mud?
The Nester: Thank you for your kind reply and your response was very clear. Would you mind telling me the brand of "Bakery Box White"? Thank you for steering my off from a bright white. Looking forward to hearing you. Thanks again
Hi - Not sure if this helps, but I am looking at the Duron Millenium fan deck that I borrowed from my decorator. The "Munsell" numbers for Tobacco Road are 2.6Y 7.5/3.5. I have no idea what these mean, but I'm hoping that Home Depot can mix colors based on these numbers. Good luck!
Hey, I need some advice. I'm remodeling my kitchen and was excited to hear about Tobacco Road!
I am going to repaint my white cabinets and replace countertops. I want to try TR on walls through kitchen and dining and want to get advice on color of counters. My floors are a neautral tile and am looking at a Wilsonart laminate that has a dark granite look. Any suggestions?
Doodle
doodle,
I'm not the best counter person to ask--i have limited experience. I like the idea of a gray with it. I'm not a granite person or granite look but that's my own personal opinion that should not change your mind whatsoever. I would go with neutral: beiges/golds/greys and stay away from greens, purpley/redish streaks. What about stainless steel counters? Butcher block? I don't know the $$ but I'm considering stainless for if we ever own again. good luck!

doodle,
we got the wilsonart high def in deepstar agate in the majority of our house and we love it! Everyone has commented on how great it loooks!
Help...I need the paint number for the Oyster Bay color. I painted our entryway and front room in this color and it is so beautiful but I threw away the paint can lid and now I cannot find it at Home Depot. Do you know the number? Thanks. I love the Tobacco Road also. Thanks, Barb
So I've been reading your blog about Tobacco Road and LOVE all the pics, but you know it's the internet so I was a little concerned about painting my house a color that I've never seen IRL. My friend just hired an expensive interior designer and painted her walls a great color, I asked her about it and what color it was. Guess what? Tobacco Road! I laughed but she didn't get the joke.
Thanks for all the pretty pics!
I am so happy as I just found out that there is a Duron store near me and I can go purchase the most fabulous color called Tobacco Road! Love love love the color!
Your blog is absolutely amazing!
You can go to Sherwin Williams and ask them to mix Duron Tabacco Road for you. I have done it. I love the color also.
After seeing all the Tobacco Road pics on your page, I was completely overtaken with the urge to repaint our entire house. We have loads of white millwork like some of the pictures here and I thought it would be perfect. I went to our neighborhood SW store and found out TR is a Miller paint. That threw me, as I'd never heard that anywhere on the net before. But it had Plantation Beige on the same strip so I knew it was the right color. Ordered a quart to sample and the color looked sooo very green to me (it was evening light). In the bright light of day it has a decidely golden cast though. Gorgeous, rich, complex color! I can see it working in every room of our house, even the study with the sagey/olive carpeting. I'm keeping our newly painted red kitchen and dark red foyer accent wall, but everything else will be TB. Thank you so much for giving me inspiration!
I love your Tobbaco Road pics. We just bought a new house and would love to use this color. We have no Duran here (in TX). I called SW with the number and name of the color but they acted dumb and said they could not color match or make Duran paint without an actual sample to for them to see. BLah. Anyone know the name of a paint from Lowe's or Home Depot that is similar?? Thanks!
I so would love to get a chip or some sort of sample to match TR. I took the info from the paint can lid to my Lowe's and it did not turn out looking anything like what it should have! I am in Oklahoma and have Lowe's, Home Depot and Sherwin Williams. Can anybody help??
Okay... so I am like totally excited to solve all of my paint troubles. I head to Lowes first and they don't have the name or codes in their computer. So off I go to Sherwin Williams. They can mix up sample cans. So I had them mix me one of Tobacco Road and the Plantation Beige. I am so excited ... I get home and try some out. AHHHHH!!! It is exactly the same as Sherwin Williams Blonde and Ivoire (lighter one). I already have these colors on my walls and I am tired of them. Bummer!!!! For those of you wondering what they look like. They are beautiful, but very gold. Especially if you don't have much natural light (like me). I am glad to know that I have such great taste though... ha ha ha
Melissa and all---
NOOO Tobacco Road is VERY different than Blonde and Ivorie! I have used/seen both of these in person and they are lighter and more yellowy/white than Tobacco road.
I'm gonna have to do some reasearch--I know they discontinued TR at Duron but why can't lowes use the code from the top of the can that I took a photo of and posted in the post?
WRITE it down and TAKE it to LOWES!
Nester...I took the numbers to Lowes and it just does not look right...it's not your numbers I am sure it's them. Since I don't have a paint chip or sample for them to compare the color to I'm out of luck with them. When I get paint mixed there no 2 cans ever seem to be quite the same.
Oh Nester...I am losing my mind! I sooo want my walls the lovely color of Tobacco Road. Do you know any way to get a paint chip of the 'life changing' color so that the Lowe's paint person will stop thinking I am crazy? They say they can match the color better if they have a chip. So far it's not turning out right and I think one of their additives is off.
Annon,
girl, i have no way to contact you! I think I'll do another post soon about TR and ask others what their code is. Do you have a DURON store? They told me they could still mix it!
Thanks for linking this up today~one of my favorite posts of all time because it gave me the color for my family room! :)
TR is beautiful! Great Job!
Thanks for sharing your colors and your lovely home.
Debbie
Well, I wish I would've known about TB before I picked Mannered/Restrained/Blonde Gold. They're not too far off, I'm guessing. I really love the Oyster Bay. Wrote that one down. I'm a sucker for the gray blue thing. Beautiful colors. I'm anxious to see how you do in your next place. Best wishes!
Just realized MY colors on my blog are the same as my paint colors in my house, too! Makes sense: we like what we like!
hi I dont know you, but my realtor told me about the colour "Tobacco Road" today and I googled it. Your site was the first that came up. THANK YOU so much for posting the formula for it because it is no longer available here. Lowes was able to recreate it for me and I painted my entryway tonight. It is gorgeous!! Thank you so much!
