Here it is. The Playroom. We have had lots of different layouts over the years from every boy in his own room with no playroom to every boy and every toy in one big room. This is my favorite so far. We are blessed to have 4 bedrooms 3 of which are small. I am all about toys and LOVE toy stores and having lots of toys around to play with.
When we first moved here we used the 4th bedroom as a guest room but it seemed like a waste of a room. With no floor space in their own rooms the boys were always caring toys into the hall to play. We decided to move the queen bed out of the guest room and give it to our 10 year old and use his twin bed in the playroom as a daybed sofa with lots of pillows. The boys and their friends all sit on the bed to play video games. And, if we have guests they can still sleep in the bed. Do you say "in the bed or or "on the bed"? I say "in" it sounds much more appealing than just on top of a bed--yuck.
I was really wishing that I had one of those system things from Pottery Barn that we all love. So perfectly colorful and organized yet kid friendly. But I didn't have a spare $6739 so I thinked and I thought and I thunk. And I had it. I got the small red night stand from the little boys room along with the red shelf {they were both taking up so much space} and moved them into the playroom. When sat right next to each other they started to look really purposeful. Oh my graciousness, I have a system!!
Here's the secret...
Anyone can do this with whatever spare dressers, shelves, tables and picture frames you might have sitting around in the attic. If you don't have anything you can use, ask around or take a trip to the the thrift store! Just spray paint whatever pieces you have with satin black spray paint to look like a set and then line them all up right nest I mean next to each other!
We sat the TV on the nightstand and used the shelf for toys. I store our toys in galvanized tubs. I have tried it all and this is the only thing that can withstand our home and still look good. We are hard on everything around here! Baskets lasted about 2 months and wooden boxes fell apart.
I have had these tubs for 3 years now and they look great. I do have one where the handle is falling off and the top is separating but that's it. I think we have 10 or 12 in our house. They are from AC Moore craft store and they were $5 each. They still carry them. Also today at Lowe's Home Improvement I saw galvanized buckets in the paint section for $5 and they would work great too. If you really wanted to be creative you could tie bows with tags for organizing or paint on them or use magnets since they are magnetic too!
It would be a great idea for us to have a super comfy mattress in that trundle but we took it out and use it for all of those bulky toys that don't fit in tubs. We do have a closet so as soon as I find a super cheap shelf, they will go in there. And yes, I am one of those pesky mom's who likes all the toys to be separated into groups let's see we have
*2 tubs of playmobil
*lincoln logs--how on earth do you spell that?
*kapla blocks
*football tub
*cars
*legos
*crazy tub for odds and ends
I do have one more tip for playrooms or any room with toys: if you have shelves, try to place them where they are not the first thing you see when you walk into the room or past the doorway. These shelves do not always look like this but I can not see them so, it doesn't bother me! I can see cute bed and bedding and that makes me happy and is almost always in order.
I fell so organized now. Thank you.

I love the color scheme in there. Its very warm! Also, I like the canvas' I think I will try that in my craft room!
It's fabulous! LOVE the red shelves!
Great job. And I love the look of the galvanized tubs!
Oh Nester, how I love thee. You truly do inspire me.
My son is going away for Spring break because he's all fancy. (Actually he's hanging at grandma's house) I plan to redecorate his bedroom as a surprise. He wants a sports theme. I'm fine with that as long as it can have an antique-y look if that makes sense. I don't want any red and yellow and blue baseballs and footballs. I want a really cool look. Help me. Please.
You got me hooked on the tub system. Except I have dainty girls who can use baskets. So everyday I hear "Mommy, will you get the Dora basket down?" or "Mommy, can we have the playdoh basket?" They think its so normal to have all toys in a category...Teach them well and let them lead the way...
I don't actually have children, but this looks so fabulous that I want to organize something right now! Thanks for the inspiration! :)
Many Blessings,
M.
PS - Any plans for more pug tassels?
Love it, Love it, love it! It actually came at the right moment for me, because I have a room that hubby and I are having a hard time figuring what to do with and I think a playroom/craft room is a GREAT idea for us. Now, any tips on integrating them both?
We have a super long family room so I've divided the room with the sofa and the area behind that (which is very large) is the play area. It looks absolutely awful! Nothing ever stays in the baskets (which I just have on the floor, lining the wall - classy!) as my son is going through a "let's dump everything on the floor at once" phase.
I have a spare bookcase in our study that is the same style as your red one, except it is super cheap and ugly - from IKEA. Do you think it could be spray painted? I'm not a big black-paint person (I like it for other people, though!), I wonder if cream would work?
I love the idea that at least half of the baskets will be out of my son's reach!
And yes, we moms have to categorize everything. It's the law. :)
Also, a daybed in the playroom is a great idea! I wouldn't have thought of that. But I should have because we have one with a trundle in our guest room and I leave the trundle out half the time and my two year old has the best time just climbing it and playing with his toys on it!
Oh blessed,
yes, i think it would be great fun to combine a play room with a craft room. I would move in a square or rectangular table--so you can put it against the wall. you can even put a hutch on top of a table and use that for storage or a shelf underneath!
kitty,
yes!!!
I have noticed that the darker the shelves, the more clutter you can get away with. White shelves make your eye go strait to what is on the shelf so you have to keep it a little neater. isn't that weird?
Well look at you go with your badself! That looks fantastic and CLEAN!!!!!
Hi Nester...Long time lurker, first time poster. I love your playroom! I would love to know where you got the bed. I love it!
I love anyone who puts toys in categories. My husband harasses me over this because he wants to put toys in the wrong bins!!!
We bought some cheap, cheap, cheap ikea shelves that were deep enough to hold the faux leather bins from Bed, Bath and Beyond. They have handles and have held up to the boys dragging, sitting and standing on them.
Another tip: I put the toys that are truly annoying (anything that makes noise and requires no thought) on the higher shelves so they tend to play with other less irritating toys (legos, blocks, etc). I also rotate the bins so they feel like they have "new" toys. PLUS they help clean up because they're just pitching it into "buckets."
oh i am all about the comment padding today.
the bed is from a store in California that I had to wait 3 months for and the rails all split. You don't want it. The store I bought it from 4 years ago doesn't carry the line anymore.
but, the company was very happy to replace the rails for me!
and Darla, it's not clean anymore.
Loving the galvanized tubs, I am going to go get some know. You are really good.
LOVE the galvinized tubs!! What great ideas--so glad you shared!
Looks nice and clean. I love the red! My daughter Madison needs a playroom for all of her stuff. She is waiting for her older brother or sister to move out. I hope that will be no time soon. Ps .. love the plates above your bed. Hope you dont mind a copy cat but I went to the GoodWill and found some goodies. I will post soon. Hope you stop in and check it out in a few days. Smiles, Susie
Oh Nester, you make me feel like I can do it too - after all, I don't have a house full of boys, and if you can make it fabulous... so can I!! Please, pretty please, would you tell us the name of the red? I love it because it looks so soft (can I say that?)
This is great inspiration for anyroom. One can never have enough storage. The buckets are a great idea and I think using magnets is creative. I have also seen them done with a rectangle filled in with chalk board paint. Well organized and decorated. Thank for sharing.
Heather
Well, I cannot take the credit for the paint on that furniture! I bought it that color and it was called cranberry. and it is very cranberry. I have to be careful of what reds I put with it because it makes some reds look really orange!
I bought the red and black stuff all from the same place that I told you about above. 3 beds, 4 shelves, 2 dressers, a night stand, 1 trundle and 2 under bed storage. I think it was the most i ever bought at one time! mostly for the boys rooms. They were sleeping on mattresses on the floor and sharing one dresser that I got for free in college.
I had to wait awhile so we could pay cash but it was so worth it!
I'm loving those buckets! And the twin bed being used as a daybed... I was thinking about doing the same thing with an antique iron bed from hub's grandmother but wasn't sure, now I am totally sold on it after having seen how fab yours looks. Wonder how much sandblasting runs? LOL
Darling Chickie Girl, got any ideas on what to do with a very cheapo ugly Sauer entertainment center? Dear son left it behind when he departed & once I have consent from him, it's gonna be history or remade into some fab if you only tell me how, LOLOLOLOL Right now I have it piled full of home dec fabric bits and pieces in my newly acquired sewing room, lol, let me tell you it's visually a real disaster seeing all that color/clutter! Also doesn't help it breaks your rule of being directly in front of the doorway, I see it first thing...ugh! Help me please, pretty please? (Truth betold this is probably way beyond help!)
Nester, I feel so great to be in your company! I'm a nut when it comes to organizing toys. Actually, I'm a nut in recovery. I used to count Little People and absolutely flip out if one was missing. If one of the Bob the Builder trucks was missing, then I was up all night searching under furniture for that thing. By the time the second boy came along, I realized that if the Little People were at least in one box and the trucks in another, and the dinosaurs in yet another, well, you get the picture. I don't think my boys care where anything is. My husband doesn't either. Certainly my dog doesn't. But it makes me feel better. Love your playroom. I'm inspired to go thrifting for great shelves now!!!
Fabulous!!!! I love it!!! Thanks for showing us! I now want to go redo my boy's room and storage!!!
I look forward to seeing what you do!
Have a good day!!!
What a great play room. I'm sure with 3 boys you need a place they can hang!
I was sad to hear about Corine Baily Rae's husband. She is one of my favorite singers. Put your records on is one of those songs I can listen to over and over again.
love it!
Love the tin tubs. We have had baskets falling apart all over the place here!
Thanks for explaining how the playlist works. I feel like such a dork for not noticing it before. :) And yes, I do usually have the sound turned down, so I never even noticed you had more than one song.
Fabulous! The tubs are gorgeous. When we redo our playroom I'll have to keep this in mind!
You never cease to amaze and inspire me!!!!!!! Love it all and love using galvanized tins for gifts and now I am all about using some for my "tough guy" 4year olds room! He cant hurt those babies. Anxiously anticipating the next idea. I just need summer (off from teaching)to do all of the ideas I see.

This is the FIRST time I have read tips about organizing toys and a playroom that were actually helpful!
I love the shelf/nightstand combo to make a system and I am definitely switching to galvanized tubs. I am tired of trashing baskets and I can't stand plastic...these tubs are great looking!
You did it again Nester, thanks girlie!
I'll be back next week with a brand new baby!
I love it! Great job! I think your ideas are helpful and easy! I've always been weird on all the toys being grouped with the right toys, too....It makes me feel better....even when everything else was a mess :) ~Meme
I have been reading your blog for a while now and was just a lurker.... But girlfriend this post was a break through miracle for me! I had to post. I triple love your blog and check in everyday. This toy storage deal is the bomb. My daughter always ends up in her little brother's bed with him at some point during the night so with her consent, we turned her former bedroom into a play/craft room. I have toys in an an amoire and in buckets.. it is still cluttered. Not to mention all my scrapbook stuff. (That I am about to ebay some of). But it does work better for us. Just needs to be better organized. You have helped! I will be purchasinf galvanized tubs this weekend!
Thanks girlfriend,
You're the Bomb Diggity!
Rox
WOW...im soooo excited ....I actually did something that you did before you posted it!!! I use a dresser in MY PLAYROOM!!! Personally I just dont think you can have too many dressers..lol...millions of uses for them.
Love your blog! Really cute ideas! I have never left a comment, but wanted to say that I enjoy your posts. I noticed you lived in Columbia SC before and that's where I grew up! Mom and dad still live there. We just had lunch on Easter at California Dreaming downtown! Just a little something in common. AND I love to decorate!! Keep it up! Fun to read!
Love this room!! I had planned to paint some bookshelves and other stuff to create a system in my office. I have always loved galvanized bins:)
Looks great. I really love your color combos in this room. I have some metal bins in my son's room too and they do work very well. One of these days I'll share about my kids rooms, but first I'll have to go through and reorganize all the things that used to be organized in bins and baskets!
Ohhhhh my!!! I just found your blog and how happy I am that I did!! You see, we have this playroom for our 3 boys and I have tried every which way to get and keep it organized. I'm a basket user who is constantly frustrated by how easily the baskets unravel and fall apart, but alas, I have found you and your galvanized bucket idea!! I will make the switch ASAP!! I have all of their shelves and big wooden toy box painted black but you know what?? I like your red!!
Thanks for all of the fabulous inspiration! If you don't mind, I'm going to add you to my blogroll so that I can return for another visit!!
Have a beautiful week!
Hugs,
Erin
I looooove the bucket idea and would totally do it but I'm afraid my son is a drummer at heart and would arise daily to his "beautiful" music. :)
I do love how you've decorated that room though - think I'll head over to goodwill today!
Wow! Awesome playroom! Great ideas and you make it look so easy.
OOOooohhh, I love the galvanized tubs!! I'm definitely stealing this idea!!! :-)
I love it! This is going on my list of ideas for the next house. We will no longer have a separate playroom and I could totally see having a shelf of galvanized tubs for the boys! Thanks for the great idea!
I have a plain, ole bookcase that I would like to paint, add buckets to (with painted numbers)and place beneath a whelf in my livingroom...your red toy holder shelf is just perfect. Would it be ok if I used your picture to show on my blog where I got the inspiration? I do appreciate it...and you have the BESTEST ideas on so many things.
I love your blog!
hugs, bj
I'm so excited to see your playroom!
I was thinking about getting wooden boxes for storage. I'm glad I didn't. My son's nickname is "Captain Destructo". I think I'll be looking for some galvanized tubs.
Being a homeschool mom, I have a serious addiction to books, Okay I admit it.
I have always been addicted to books and homeschooling is just a way to enable my addiction.
How do you store your books. The kids are always wrecking the shelves. Not only do I Organize toys but I have a compulsion to organize books into categories. I have colored sticker dots for subjects. I like to think I have a library.
This comment is dragging on.....
Have you ever attached shutters to a bookshelf? I was thinking I could cover the dissarray?
Jaymie
I found your blog through my friend Oliver's! You inspire me to get my little one's room all organized! I too like to put my son's toys in seperate containers! For some reason they just don't stay that way very long!:) Thank you for sharing. Your blog is very relaxing and fun to read! ~Amy
I love your blog - so happy I found it!! GREAT idea for the playroom and just in time! We are turning our loft into a toy room for our 5 and 3 yr old boys this weekend...think I might be heading out tonight to get some galvanized bins! Duh, why didn't I think of that?!! Thanks for the tip!
That's a lovely way to make the playroom organized and clutter-free.
Nice blog you have here.
I sure having things so organized makes life so much easier. Great work, I love it!
Lovely! Especially the buckets! You should enter the contest that I'm one of teh sponsors for:

Ok, so this is a comment and a question on an old post. I love your blog, totally copy your ideas, but never comment. I'm really, really, sorry. I even spray painted my wicker black after you bought yours!
I just love your playroom shelves/buckets. My problem is finding buckets!!! I live in Iowa, and we have no AC Moore. I looked at Lowed and they only had a 16 gallon washtub. So I looked THREE more places, to no avail. So I began an online search.
Found a place I could order from, but now I need an exact size. They don't do returns and shipping is like $20 so I don't want to mess us. The buckets are about $7, so not terrible, I guess.
Do you possibly have time to measure one? Like across the bottom and the depth? It is so darn hard to tell.
your ever faithful reader,
Stephanie
