Ragamuffin Memo Garland: You Can Make One!

This is a repost of the now infamous Ragamuffin Memo Garland that I first posted back in April on this blog and then published over at Blissfully Domestic in May. I love the word "ragamuffin" and got to use it in the name of my previous business. I missed that word and thought it so appropriately described this garland and so did so many of you! The ragamuffin fever spread really fast and it was so fun to see what all of you made.

Want to make one? They are so simple all you need is fabric, ribbon, ring clips and time--lots and lots of time.

Here's the finished product it is fat and fluffy and adorable. You can always click on any of the pictures to enlarge them, don't forget about that.

I make my garland with long strips of ribbon, fabric, fringe and anything else I can get my hands on. You know I never measure but here is a close up of a few strips so you get the idea of how long. I would err on cutting your fabric too long. That is if you had to err.

You want to have one base ribbon that is the one you tie everything else to. I used a long pink one here and I usually make it about as long as my arm. You can make them as long or short as you want.

And you tie the strips on. And you tie the strips on. And you tie them on. Am I not supposed to end a sentence with "on"? I think not. But you keep doing it until you want to curse me and anyone who you are making this for and then you look at it and you are almost half way done. And you keep doing it. Your kids can help too. You cannot tie wrong.

For my boy's garland, I used some old shirts from my husband's teaching days. Look, there's a cuff. I also cut up some sweet little jeans they all wore and a blanket and even one of their little shirts. I even had extra fabric left over from a window mistreatment that I threw in there.

It's like making a big soup. You just keep adding all sorts of stuff until it magically looks right. You are thinking that I don't really make soup and you are right.

As you are tying and tying and cutting more stuff because you didn't dream it would take so much fabric, just remember how adorable this is gonna look. You really want to pack the fabric and ribbon in. That's how it looks so fab. Do not skimp on this, you will just be wasting your time.

Once you get to the very end, you tie the ribbon that is the base onto the ring of a ring clip. Do the same for the other end. I actually do this first so I can see where my start and stop are easily.

I like to add clips or clothespins in every 6 or 8 inches so you can hang stuff in the garland. You can hang photos or baby shoes or grocery lists or Christmas cards or ticket stubs...

Look how cute this one is in my old kitchen. And yes, those are napkins used for window mistreatments. I'm so glad you noticed!

I hope you have fun with this project! It's like a quilt only easier and you don't have to sew and you can't cover up with it. If you don't want to make your own I'll have some listed at my etsy shop within the week.

This garland would be adorable hung over a changing table, window or bed. Make a Chirstmasy one and hang your cards on it. Use your babies old clothes and hang it in the playroom. What ideas do you have for these garlands?

This is the perfect time of year to make a garland for someone. Need more inspiration? Google Ragamuffin Garland and get inspired by what others have made as well!

Here are a few other ideas of what you can do with some ragamuffin scraps!

I love the idea you think outside the box. I would not have thought to put a mans CUFF on here!!! I want so desperately to think outside the box like you...Im trying soooo hard..lol
The best part of this garland is clipping photos in it..HOW FUN!!!! Before starting this I need to invest in some really good scissors though. My sweet angels steal my scissors and ruin them...I need to HIDE them!!!

Guess what I finally did?! I mistreated. *sigh*

And you know what? I'm gonna do it again this weekend. I feel sooo liberated.

But, um... one thing. I can't find black ring clippies. And I know you *heart* gold... but I'm just not there yet. ;)

Where do you buy your (insert official name here) ring clippy things?

CUTE! Looove the pink one!

Oh, and can I make a request? I want to decorate my covered outdoor porch with a string of Christmas lights. How can I swag them and hide the cords? I thought you might have some advice for me.

So very cute! I think I'll make one (or two). What wonderful creativity you bring to decorating!

I kind of hate you. Not really, I heart you big time, but you're giving me the urge to have a baby on the hopes I will have a girl so I can pink and frilly up her room because I love that pink and green garland.
I actually love this idea and will do it for my ds's new pirate room. Arrrrr!

Biteofpunkinpie said...

How much do I totally HEART this project?! Too much! My little one's room is done in black, red and green w/a lady bug theme. I cannot WAIT to make one of these. And it just so happens that the curtains my mom made for her window are a tad too short, so putting this on the window sill will fill that space very nicely I think! Cannot wait to get on this project!!!!!!!

I love what you have dubbed these..."Ragamuffin garlands"! My aunt does these at Christmas and hangs them all over. Since she does it at Christmas, I never thought of using them other times of the year. I'm simply crazy about the one above your old sink. Oh, Nester, (SIGH) you are just so cool...

Mrs. B said...

You know I think this is so cute because I commented before when I saw one in your other picture, but I'll tell you again... so cute! I'm going to rush over to etsy to see what you've got. Love the idea of using men's shirts. My hubby used to be a teacher too!

Katie said...

Oh, P.S. I have been trying to convince my husband to let me paint our (his) movie room the famous Tobacco Road. So I have been pulling up pictures on your blog of it and keep showing it to him. Only since it's the movie room and the paint has to be somewhat dark in there, I keep trying to show him the monitor screen at an angle so it looks darker than it is. Isn't that awful of me? But I know he will love it once it's done...I just have to get him to agree with me at first!

Jo said...

These garlands are so sweet! I've done something similar with a coat hanger bent into the shape of a heart. I especially like how you clip memos and pictures onto your garlands. I just might have to make one or two ;-)

Keep up the good work. I must say that I did some mistreatment years ago on my own. I had a beautiful table cloth which I cut up!!! and stapled on my window frame...oh such abuse of a table covering...it looks great.

I just recently found your blog ... love it! Thanks so much for sharing your decorating ideas. I had a question about your barn stars in one of the previous posts ... what is the size of the biggest one? And where do you get your stars? There are so many places ... some really expensive and some not so expensive. Do you have a fav place where you picked yours up? Thanks again!
~~Mary Jane~~

The Nester said...

I found most of my stars at tj maxx type stores. all the ones you see on that one wall that are blue were $12 and under and the biggest is 36 inches.

I have two huge ones. One I ordered on ebay {metal barn star} for $40 you have to put it together but looks great.

I'm surprised that your hands were even able to type out this post with all that tying going on! Your garlands look feather-boalicious!

Wouldn't they be cool as super-exaggerated fringe on your mistreatments or on a pillow? I once saw a girl wearing this idea as a jacket. I don't recommend it in that ill-chosen fashion capacity. :)

Wanted to add...
I've been thinking about these all night, especially the picture of the one laying (lying?) on the table. So this isn't really a new idea, but if I were to make one for here at work to put on the top of my credenza, and then added clothespins like you suggested I could put pictures and cards and whatnot in it, and I'd be able to constantly change them out and whatnot. What do you all think?!

Tracey said...

I just clicked on every single picture to enlarge it so I could all the nitty gritty details.

Thanks for commenting on the price of your stars. I saw some nice big stars the other day for $7.99 at the grocery store, of all places. I was looking at them wishing I could call you to see if that was a good price. Now I know they weren't a rip off.

I'm so glad this post is back. I had it on my favorites and just kept looking at the pictures.

I just figured out though, you go from one end to the other? I must be doing it the hard way but I've been tying the fabric on randomly so I have nice balance and can cut the fabric as I go, since I'm anal and don't want extra pieces laying around not getting used right away.

Now, if only I could apply some of that neurosis to cleaningmy house and doing laundry and cleaning up the leaves outside killing our already sad lawn.

And girlfriend, you must have calves of steel and ankles like tree trunks (as in strong and think delicate saplings not aged oaks)--how can you wear high heels all. the. time? I can barely handle three hours of church. Oh well, you look classy. And I think I officially am too weird.

Thanks so much for the tutorial! This is similar to how we used to make decorated elastic hair bands, where you take an elastic hair band & while you stretch it out, you tie on all the strips of cloth, ribbon, tulle, etc. You just tie as much as you possibly can on it. They come out really cute to use in a little girl's pony tail! I especially remember the red, white & blue ones coming out so adorable! They were really cute coordinated with a specific outfit! I have loved these since the first time I visited your blog! I made one for my daughter a little while ago, its not anything close to the awesomness that you turn out, but it serves its purpose! lol You can see it here: http://projectdomesticbliss.blogspot.com/2008/09/tackle-it-tuesday_23.html

My first married Christmas, we were too poor to buy any decorations, so I made a wreath using this method. I started with a wire coat hanger and made it a circle, tied on the fabric. You can starch your fabric if you want it to stay crisp, or let it crinkle. I still have that wreath and another one I made years later.

Howdy Ho, I did make a ragamuffin and in a couple of days I'll put it on my blog with a link back to your tutorial. Thanks and it was way too much fun to make. :-)

I put the picture up, linking it to your tutorial. I have to say that next time I won't use "batique" (sp) fabric because it was too stiff. You could see the knots. It seems like it could use a worn or thin fabric. Thanks for sharing. Take care

I just got finished making one of these for my DS's room and I OVERestimated how much fabric it would take! I actually have a gallon zip-lock bag FILLED with 10" pieces of ribbon and fabric...lol!
I decided that for my DD's room, I would only cut the fabric first and THEN cut up the ribbon!
Thanks for the fantastic ideas!

I love those garlands. I might just have to try that. At least I don't have to learn how to sew first.
