See all those sticks and pheathers and junk in that urn back there?
They are the creepy, scrawny love child of this project...
And this project from a wedding.
I decorated for the reception for my husband's cousin. I had so much fun purchasing all the beautiful things they needed from Hobby Lobby with their hard earned money. Of course, they didn't need to pay me anything because that's what family does. But, they paid me in something that is even better than cash. Sticks. They let me keep every single one of these store bought, perfectly twisted, precisely measured sticks. Oh, and they also gave me those enchanting fake feathers {pheathers}. I was beyond giddy. And they were thrilled to be rid of 89 super long sticks.
I would never EVER buy sticks myself {not that it's bad if you buy sticks because they are well worth it and you should buy some now if you can} but I was so in love with these sticks and how tall they were and the presence that they commanded that I was eternally grateful for a gift of something I wanted but would never purchase for myself. Aren't those always the best gifts?
So, I stuffed my scratched up urn full of that floral foam, and without trying to perfectly measure where each stick would be placed, just started with the tallest sticks and stuck stuff in the urn. I put the white sticks in next. Then finished it off with the pheathers.
I was so surprised at how this simple arrangement stole all the attention against the builder beige walls in our rental. Funny how a room comes alive with some dead sticks and fake pheathers. My toile sofa is getting quite jealous.

Are we the only two crazy birds up this late? My kids asked me lastnight... do always look for something to blog about? Doesnt everyone... Guess I got bad. I find myself talking about you and all of my other favorite blogger friends out there like you are just the girl nextdoor. I think my family is beginning to worry, Im having fun! Susie H
Your boys don't try to pull out all your sticks? Lucky. Knock me over with a pheather. Clearly you trained them at a young age not to mess with YOUR sticks and to find their own urn. When did I miss that mom lesson?
You are the only girl I "know" who can put sticks and feathers in an urn and it be so pretty!
I did something really similar to this. I had my kids go gather long branches from the woods behind our house. Then I spray painted them silver and then coated them with white diamond dust. I then hung white and silver beads and small ornaments on the branches (just a few). I used it as a centerpiece on my table at Christmas time and made several to decorate a party.
So cheap! I want to go gather more sticks and play around with feathers. I love how that looks in your living room.
What in the world am I doing up this late..err...EARLY!!!??? And you too ...and 4 other seemingly fine ladies...i have to get some rest!! I love the pheathers...and sticks...and esp.the scratchy urn...you always do such a wondreful job making things beautiful!! makes me ooh and ahh!
(and wondreful is french..right?)
Being paid in sticks and pheathers....makes it SO worthwhile!
Pheathers!? You are phunny!
Your arrangement looks great...and your couch should be jealous!
It looks amazing! I'd love to see more wedding decoration pictures too LOL
I have a tall cyclinder style clear glass vase that I filled with florist foam and spanish moss, then stuck the branches in along with some fake berry looking looking branches (purchased from our favorite store) then I wired a tiny mushroom bird to the tip of a branch... Loving your nest though! Might have to incorporate a nest into mine and a few feathers, excuse me I meant Pleathers, LOL
You're amazing Girl!
ooops still spelled it wrong! pheathers!
It's beautiful. A little wild. And most definitely a tad dangerous. I love it!
I have to tell you that the painted branches and nest was the first thing that I unabashedly copied from you. I was so smitten by that arrangement that I marched myself into the backyard and clipped a bunch of branches, spray painted them and stuck 'em in an urn in my front hall. They sat there all spring with a sweet little nest that I already had.
That was before I started my blog, so I nevered showed a pic but I just loved it.
PHABULOUS!
I love the look of the sticks and pheathers...but I don't think my house can pull it off. Or maybe it's just me? I'm not phabulous enough for pheathers. I just realized I have glass urn with sticks and stones. How phancy. :o)
Yes, I love the sticks and pleathers, the arrangement is gorgeous...HOWEVER nothing could take away from how magnificent your toile couch is!!!! I've never been a jelous person but many howdy...i Love that couch!!!! She should never feel jelous of anything taking her glory away ;)
You have the most amazing ideas! Thanks for sharing ANOTHER great one with us.
We had friends over for dinner last night and my one girlfriend saw my tassel (the big pear one) hanging on my baker's rack and she said,
"Oh my gosh, is that one of the Nester's tassels???"
You're famous girl!
I love your sticks. It really adds something to your room amd fills up empty space. Very simple and charming. Clarice
Love the pheathers and sticks! You are amazing. When my daughter got married in Jan. we cut some sticks from our backyard that were a little wavy to put in some arrangements that she was making. We left the arrangements to be used for a reception, and when I went back to make sure everything had been cleaned up and thrown away, the sticks were laying in a pile. I went to throw them out and the maintenance man said one of the ladies had saved those and would be back to get them. I was amused since they were just back yard sticks.
I really lack in all things sticks and feathers. Not a one in my house, except for what my kids and the cat drag in.
But I love yours!
I've been eyeing that project since you first posted the picture. I'm so glad you dedicated a post to it so I can copy it! :-) I love it.
Whew, there are some relieved little birdies out there to learn that those are just pheathers! Looks fabulous!
How nice that the wedding couple gave you the decorations! Reminds me of the time that I bought decorations for a Y2K televised production and the producer was going to pay me back and then he gave away all the set decorations to the cast and crew and then gave me a hot check and then gave me another hot check and then avoided my calls. Not the happy ending you had. But I learned my lesson.
pretty pretty!!
I have a similar arangement, but I used sticks and eucalyptus. It smells lovely and adds some serious drama. I thing your pheathers look phantastic. :)
No, the toile couch still wins--love that couch!!
~ Sarah
A great way to add some drama to any room!
Honey... you could take mud, rocks & crayons and come up with a masterpiece. You are soooooooooo talented!
I did an arrangement similar to that for a Christmas wedding two years ago - I sprayed all the branches silver and it was just gorgeous with the lighting. Free to you sticks are even better!
So dramatic! -Julia
I think it fills up that space just right. Your room/nest is coming together nicely.
Kathy :)
Am I the only one who did Imperfectly beautiful? ~blush~
Beautiful! I love the height that it adds to the room.
And, um, wow. I priced sticks and feathers once. NOT. CHEAP.
Your rock.
oooh! i love them! very pretty!
Those photos don't do those sticks justice. They look even better in person.
i am a big fan of your blog, and just wanted to say i love this arrangement! i have saved the entire photo in my inspiration gallery. you've done such a wonderful job! you inspire me to push my decorating farther. thanks so much!
My cats would have that thing destroyed in seconds! Feather (pheathers) and cats don't mix, but it looks great in your house!
I love sticks too! At my first cottage, I carried a whole small limb and put it a corner of my living room, added white twinkle lights and birds...at the time my husband was deployed to Saudi Arabia. When he got back he just laughed about me dragging sticks in the house. I see I am not the only one with this "problem"! I love your container, and I may just do a stick display myself!
~Jill
You make me laugh! I love your toile couch so much. My hubby & I have a love hate passion for toile. I am in love with it & he hates it. Proving men know nothing haha. I have been so jealous (in a nice way) for your toile couch since I saw the first pic of it. The arrangement definitely is gorgeous too. Beautiful. I had a nice stick arrangement too, then my kids decided to sword fight with them. Go figure.
Looks great!! I always have sticks in vases in my house. For Easter, I painted them white.
Maybe I could paint some sticks red? I love red. Yes, I think I will. Off to buy red paint. Thanks Nester!!

Speaking of your toile couche -- we were talking about it, weren't we? I'm a new reader - I love your ideas - and I'm getting ready to tackle my first mistreatment today, not for a window, I'm starting small. Anyway, I love your couch...where did you get it? And, did you have to steal and burn your husband's black leather recliner? I may have to. DH won't get rid of his...
So glad to have found you,
Hey Nester! I wanted to let you know I mentioned your blog on my blog today. Hope it is ok. :) I was talking about where I get my style inspriation from and it would have been totally remiss to not include a link to your blog. Thank you for the wonderful posts--keep up the good work!
Love it! Funny how dead sticks can bring life to a room. Reminds me of the gospel in a roundabout way...
I love it! It demands respect, I may just have to copy :-) But, I'll probably just hop over to the woods and get my sticks. I'm cheap like that!
Just wondering, can you put up all your tacks etc. for window mistretments in your rental ??? Any objection from your landlord about holes in the wall ?
Wow! -- Just simply stunning!
When are you coming to my house to do mine? :)
Pritty, Pritty! That's JUST what I've been needing...we have 12 ft ceilings in most rooms and I've been needing something with more heighth! Once again, thanks Nester!
I really love that look! Something like that might work on the console table behind my couch in the living room.
Sometimes I just have to laugh at the things I get excited about! Like feathers and sticks! :)
Well I think that arrangement is just stunning. AND, I sent my dad over to your blog to check out that toile sofa...they have an extra sectional in the shop right now and I am praying they get their heart right and slap some toile on there...I offered to let them "store" it in my living room once it was finished. He laughed...and said how about a nice durable neutral with toile throw pilllows? Who knows what will come in the doors....
Call me out of the loop, but I have never heard of fake feathers; I always just hope a pheasant will keel over in front of me and I can take the tail feathers. I have seen a few pheasants, but they DO NOT cooperate! Maybe I just need to search for pheathers!
Janet
So pretty! I guess birds of a feather flock together. I'm still working my way through the IDHTBPTBB link list, 10 or 15 blogs at a time, and you have some fabulous readers with lovely homes and fabulous hearts!
I'm SO into sticks these days too & love to be on the lookout for them. Yours are great!
Rhoda
you're an inspiration!

well HOW FUn is that!!
I have a kat who would dearly, dearly love to come visit your pheathers. :)
ok..that is really cool..and that room...oh that is pretty!
enjoy!
Awesome!!! What a great idea especially for a room with some height. As usual..you deliver!! Thanks for the great idea.
You inspired me tonight! I dug out a new funky vase I had bought for my toilet bowl brush (!), stole some sticks that were decorating my screened porch, and wa-la! Instant height and drama in my den.
I love you, Nester :)
Sticks...they are the greatest! Great piece and so nice that they were given to you.
Oh I love it. It really did add something to the room. I'm a big fan of sticks too -- just can't force myself to pay for them yet :-)
I have a curly willow tree in my backyard, and a recent windstorm just blew what looks like about half of it down into my grass. Want some more sticks?!?!? :)
Oh, it's a beautiful arrangement and I am so jealous, along with the toile couch. Oh, never mind, I am also jealous of the toile couch!! LOL
Blessings,
Trixi
I just got a bunch of sticks from a neighbor who was gardening the other day, plopped them in a vase and am thrilled with the look! It's so bold and graphic and organic.
Really fun blog!
I have quite a few arrangements like this. People actaully think that I paid for them! HA!
We too tend to hide ugly electrical gadgets at our house. Only problen is...when my "not so careful" husband moves things (aka picture frame) to get to the thermostat, he usually breaks it!
Love it!
I may not be alot of things, but I AM A sticks and feathers girl. I can do that. And one one similar. MAybe I can put mine in ITHTBPTBB....hmmmm
LOVE YOURS!
COmmanding
Amazing to me what sticks and feathers end up when you combine them together.
Earthy yet elegant!
Keep those pictures coming with your new rooms freshly decorated Nester style!
Hugs~ Renee
Mama to four
And to think I got to sit right there next to those lovely sticks and pleathers.
I am one lucky gal.
I'm gonna go find me some twigs now.
Love you!
K
Love your sticks...they look great! Who would think that sticks and pheathers would make such a great arrangement!
Very pretty! But I do think you know how to spell feather!
YES YES the sticks are AMAZING!!! now i want some! have any leftovers...hmmm? lol...j/k!
~Laura
I dream of a Hobby Lobby in Upstate NY. My mom and dad moved to NC and decorated most of their home from the Hobby Lobby. Beautiful ideas.
You make the most beautiful things. I love the arrangement. I have a spot that something like that would look fabulous in......now just gotta get around to that project. You ARE my inspiration. I am so glad I discovered your blog. Thank You!!
I'm not sure if your computer is working yet, but I'm loving your blog. I found you through my friend Cathy. Sweet blog!
Blessings,
Pam
