10 Minutes to a Room You'll Love:: Part 4: The Kitchen

This is the fourth post in a series where we are exploring all sorts of quick and easy ways to spruce up your home. The idea is to focus on a few things that you can change right now to make the room just a little more inviting. Check out Family Rooms ,
Master Bedrooms and Bathrooms. This Thursday we will have a Mr. Linky party so you can show us any changes you have made; don't forget to take some photos!

All the photos in this post were taken by moi in our current rental home.
*

The kitchen. It's the heart of the home is it not? If we owned this house there are a zillion things I would do to this kitchen but that's another post. So bear with me, knowing that I am a renter who can only change certain things. But these certain things make a HUGE impact.

1. Unclutter. I have to state the obvious and I know it's easier said than done. But in this photo you can see all but about 2 feet of my counter space and that is all the counter space I have. Everything that is sitting out must be something I use at least twice a week and more of a pain to put away than to leave out. We use our toaster almost every day. But it's easy to put away and I keep it in the skinny cabinet next to the stove. Cutesy stuff placed on small kitchen counters takes up valuable real estate. Delete it.

2. Shine the sink. I'll let the Flylady explain that step. It's amazing how much better a shiny sink can make you feel. I'm pretty sure I have one of the least expensive, builder grade, sink {and faucet} in America but when it's shiny, it looks fantastic!

3. Clean off the refrigerator. When life seems overwhelming, I remove everything from the front of the fridge. I find myself putting notes and reminders up there too but I've notice when my fridge is clutter free my kitchen feels bigger and more clean. One trick is to only use the side of the fridge for magnets and when that gets full, remove something.

4. Incorporate Fabric. Did you guess that this is my favorite one?! Yes, you need fabric in a kitchen! Yes, it gets some dirt on it--YIPPEE that means you are using your kitchen and your fabric to its fullest! Those are silk panel mistreatments back there. I love them in the kitchen. A rug in the kitchen is great too, but with 3 boys mine always end up too crunchy so I use pillows, toile parsons chairs and mistreatments to soften the room.

5. Emphasise Seating. I know not everyone has a table in their kitchen. However, most people can find a place for a tiny table and two chairs or a single bar stool off in the corner. When you have a friend over and are working in the kitchen, it's so nice to offer them a place to sit. And I'm gonna get on my high horse for a minute and have a good talking to any of you out there who are lucky enough to have a bar area or a little overhang of your island. PLEASE, find a few bar stools! I lived in a house with an island and no stools for awhile and one day found some on sale. It completely changed the way we used our kitchen. Try craigslist and yard sales and don't forget, it's easy to spray paint them.

6. Consider Lighting. Yes, you need task lighting and junk like that but that's not what I'm talking about. You need some soft, warm, filtered lampshade light. Just try it. And turn off the overhead light unless you really need it. Have a chandelier? Add some clip on shades and bask in the warm glow.

7. Add Beauty. For me this white dresser calms and classies up the room. Beauty can come in the form of art on the wall, a pretty table runner, a wine glass with clippings from the yard placed inside, a bowl of fresh fruit anything that makes you feel good when you look at it.

That's it y'all. Those are my kitchen tips. Now, tell me yours.

**********
Thursday:
Let's all meet back here at The Nest and share our 10 minute makeovers. So many of you have emailed photos and done some creative and easy fixes. I know others would love to see what you've been up too. There aren't really any rules to join in. Simply write a post on your blog about what change you made and why and link back here to the post that will be published Thursday at 12:01 am Eastern time. Don't forget to take some photos! And I'll see if I can bribe Darcy into making us a pretty nesty button to use for the party.

Shine the sink! You won't believe if I send you the pictures of what the concrete countertop guy did to the fancy sink on my job! Won't use him again! Great tips! Thanks!

for heavy-traffic areas with little ones and dirty shoes, try an outdoor area rug. target has a fantastic selection at fantastic prices, and all you gotta to do make it look like new again is take it out back, beat the heck out of it for a few minutes, and hose it down.

totally pretty, totally comfortable compared to cold tile in the mornings, and totally durable and easy!

Perfect ideas! I especially identify with the de-clutter of the fridge. It gets crazy cluttered, fast!!

Thanks so much!

Why is it so hard to keep my sink shiny? Fly Lady is really onto something there. Love the tips, sista.

Ashley @ Domestic Fashionista said...

This is great! This is by far my favorite so far. I think because the kitchen is used so much...all the things you mentioned make so much sense! So I have a small window over the sink sandwiched between two cabinets. It is the only window in the house that came with mini-blinds...everything else I have used curtains. I would like to dress this window up but still keep the privacy. Do I go with a valance and keep the blinds or match everything else with curtains? It kind of grosses me out to think the curtains would be so close to the splashing of the sink. But like you said, it is just getting used! What is your advice? Get over the mini-blinds or get over the dirty curtains? But I also really like how you have a mirror over yours. I think mine would be cute with an empty frame hanging in the window...I don't know!!! AGH! ;)
Thanks Nester!

Nester, I have so enjoyed these room redos each week! I can't wait to work on the kitchen. Just today I was telling hubby that we need to get rid of the very ugly vertical blinds in our eating nook. They've never hung correctly and they look awful. My hubby, who is usually so conservative when it comes to decorating, said, "Yes, let's get rid of them." I'd love to replace them with what you have. Thank you for continuing to inspire me! I mentioned you in my post today.

Nester,
I love this series of quick room make overs. Years ago I started to use the Flylady's suggestions and have fallen off the bandwagon on and off. But some of it still sticks, the quick decluttering and shining the sink are still a couple of the lessons I practice religiously and it does make a big difference.
Thank you for sharing your tips.
Have a wonderful Monday,
Tam

Yay! I've done pretty well on my kitchen. I have a beautiful chest that belonged to my grandparents and 3 lamps in here. Love this room. I do want to change the window treatments & add different bar stools but I'm on my way.
Thanks for the tips.

Julia @ Hooked on Houses said...

I think the dresser with the lamp looks great in there. I wouldn't have thought to put a piece of furniture like that in the kitchen, but it totally works! I had an empty wall in mine and put a small marble-topped table there that I found at Pier One on sale, along with one of our extra kitchen chairs. Sort of like a little desk area. I do like having a lamp on it for non-overhead-lighting in the room, like you mentioned.

I have to admit my refrigerator is the kids' domain. They have all sorts of stuff on it, including those words that you make fridge poetry with, Lion King magnets, report cards, you name it. Mine has never looked as clean as yours! :-)

I love your series and plan to incorporate lots of your ideas in my rooms. First, I need to repaint the bathroom, kitchen, and bedroom. They really need a fresh coat of paint.

I have read Fly Lady, too. She does have great ideas! A little while ago I added pillows to my kitchen table bench...I love it...yours are so pretty...do you ever worry that food will get on them? I do!

Love that dresser so very cute!

loving all these! I love a simple "what's cookin" chalkboard to write what we're having for dinner~the kids and hubby love knowing what we're having, it makes me actually have to know what we're having (lol), and it just automatically looks like you're on top of things...even grilled cheese looks elegant when it's written on a chalkboard. :) Have a great Monday!

Did you put anything on the toile chairs, like scotchguard- or are they slipcovered? I want to do those at my kitchen table but I also have a pile o'small people (dirty, dirty small people) and I'm afraid an upholstered chair would get wrecked.

This is my favorite room so far - although your bedroom is a close 2nd. :-)

Love it...just did a post a bit ago about my shiny sink. It feels great for those minutes that it 's actually empty. Off to do it again , and clear some of that clutter. :)

Aubrey said...

I think I've done good--have a lamp, have not enough counterspace, added a dresser, added fabric. And of course mine does not look quite so classy and is covered in dirt and kids toys and I guess my kids contribute to clearing off the fridge by leaving all their foot-murdering word whammer letter magnets all over the floor. it's okay, i've learned to wear shoes so i don't feel all the grit, anyway. So is it okay that i covered my fabric-seated chairs with vinyl for that fresh 70's look? i'm aiming to be marie barone.

I.need.more.counter.space. I have a small kitchen/dining area. I have a microwave taking up one HUGE area and too many things on the counter. I would LOVE to re-do the whole thing. Move the microwave somewhere in now cabinet space. Now I am inspired to take another look at it! I just decluttered the frig last week and I'm all about a clean Fly Lady sink!

Really great ideas...since the boys are home from school today, I'll let them help by taking down the stuff on the refrigerator.

Parsons chairs:

Y'all like those doncha?

I got them at a furniture place that sold stuff after the furniture market in High Point--years ago. You can see some of the filth they have collected.

It would have been very smart to scotch guard.

But parsons chairs are all over the place--I know you can find them!

Oh my dear... we are suffering with the same builder faucet, which now is leaking and in need of repair. Yes repair because do I have the moola to replace the darn thing?? WHO KNEW that a measly piece of metal and rubber grommets could cost so much!

I cracked up when you mentioned the sink shining because my blog today featured a little blurb about our FLY GIRL and I admitted that I wasn't a sink shiner. Honestly, it's beautiful but dang-it-all, something always creeps into the sink and I can't keep up with it. I've digressed to just shining the leaky builder faucet and wiping down the counters.

Fabric is my downfall too. It's there... on my window box seats and I used to love it but it looks like my kids stood on it too many times then ran their runny noses the length of the seats. I think I'm moving to a rich vinyl (hate me) and nice WASHABLE pillows.

Great poster Nester!

Pretty Organizer said...

Oh, and I didn't mention that I don't think I've seen that dresser look the same twice. You're a girl in a whirl I tell you. I'm jealous at how much you can get done in a day... better go back to edjumakating those kiddos so I can catch up for a season.

The kitchen is by far my favorite room in a home. I'm so grateful for tips on quick fixes from one renter to another!

Denise K. said...

Great kitchen quick fixes! Love them all! :-)

The other easy idea we did just a week ago, was replace the boring builder light fixture in the kitchen nook area. It was silver and boring, but in good condition, so we felt as though we should keep it. When my friend suggested replacing it, I thought it would cost hundreds. Amazingly, Lowes had a neat black iron chandelier for $88. Since our kitchen is going to be in a "French Country" kind of theme, this light fixture made a big difference for under $100.

Isn't it fun to decorate! :-) Now I need your help for more projects! I will try to find your link for online services if you are available! Thanks Nester!

Wendy @ The Shabby Nest said...

Hey Nester! I just adore your parsons chairs and pillows...question from one Mommy to another...do the pillow actually stay on the chairs...and how do you keep the parsons chairs from getting too horribly messy? I have pillows in the windowseat in my kitchen which adds softness, but I love the idea of pillows on the chairs...I'm just afraid they'd be on the floor the majority of the time. ;-)

Oh, and I'm right there with ya on the fridge thing...I cleaned off the front of my fridge after we redid our kitchen, and I LOVE how much cleaner the kitchen looks!

AnNicole @ OurSuburbanCottage said...

When I walked out of the kitchen into the garage to go to work this morning (I kid you not) I looked back and went "Argh! I would feel so much better if my pretty kitchen was clean and clutter free." I always end up piling things on the table when I walk in the house, I have too many things on the counters and fridge, and (cover your ears if you don't want to hear this) I don't mop the floor as often as I should.

The linky party is a great idea. I'll be brave and take before and after photos and post them Thursday. Thanks!

AnNicole @ OurSuburbanCottage said...

P.S. You have such a nack for "Blooming wherever you're planted". You don't ever seem to get hung up on what you wish you could change. Instead you focus on the millions of things you ARE able to change to make your house feel like a home. That's why you're such an inspiration girly.

OK - I'll stop gushing now :).

The Nester said...

Pillows: they stay there for the most part. The bench is the normal seat for my middle son. It works because he doesn't like ketchup. If he liked ketchup, I'd throw the pillows in the other room whenever he eats it. Like I do when we have spaghetti.

for me, moving the pillows once a week is a small price to pay for the beauty they add to the room. You get to decide if it's worth it or not. They are only on the bench and the chair in the corner--not on ever chair.

Here's some pretty plain parson's chairs:

Love the kitchen ideas. I'm with you on the clean refrigerator. All that stuff drives me crazy! As far as fabric...what do you think about fabric and shutters? I have shutters in my breakfast nook (the only light in my kitchen). Is it OK to mistreat around shutters? The shutter people say the shutter IS your window treatment and you shouldn't have anything else. What do you think oh wise decorating queen?

Absolutely fabulous ideas. I'm a big fan of the Fly Lady, I SO agree with the impact of a shiny sink. My kitchen doesn't have room for extra furniture, but I am on the look-out for barstools. Love the lamp. You've given me lots to think about, maybe after the bedroom is done, the kitchen will be next!

Declutter!!! Yes! This helps so much. I collect things; newspaper articles, pictures from magazines, 100 books, business card...I'll just stack them here and get to them later in the week...that's what I tell myself. Before long I'm feeling overwhelmed, when cleared, it's amazing how much better I feel! Great post with spring on the way!

Love, love, love the idea of the mirror behind the kitchen sink.
You have just given me a fabu idea.
Right now I have napkins in sort of a mistreatment hiding behind my sink but I am all over this mirror action!

As for the size of my kitchen, well it's about 9ft long by 4 wide. So tiny is an understatement. I think the mirror will help give the illusion that it's bigger.

Thanks for the tip sista!

I'm not sure why I didn't find you until now, but I am so happy I did! I love this post. I live in a rental that is less than stellar. You have about twice as much counterspace as I do, to give you and idea. But I'm on a mission to clear out the unessentials.

We are a military family so will be moving around a lot. I'm trying to aquire things that can be used anywhere we live. I'm just so glad to see that you can make a rental cute. Now if I could resolve the closet space problem - wish I could just take closet space with me when we move too....

Thank you so much!!

I try to keep the clutter off kitchen counters (and everywhere, love FlyLady!) and shined sink at least a couple times a week. And I have the same blue and white daisy valances on my windows that I made when we were first married. I've put them in four kitchens now and it always make me feel at home! Lovely! Thanks!

My kitchen tips:

ISLAND:
I designed my island so you could sit at both sides of it. We LIVE on that thing!

The island is a custom fabricated rustic metal top. It's a workhorse and just looks cool and has an hourglass sort of profile on both sides which uses less space visually than a square shape.

STOOLS:
I bought the most comfy I could find, with bowbacks. You'd think you were sitting in a regular chair. THAT is the key to WANTING to sit at an island IMO. Ensure your feet are sitting on a wisely placed bar. Some stools don't have them or are too low or high. If too low, your legs pinch on the more shallow seat.

SINK:
Best cleaner on the market? Americans are sooooo lucky! Bon Ami of course! (not avail in Canada where I am) Use it daily and you'll eventually get a coating of sorts on your stainless that repells water.

SINK size:
I swapped out my two-sides-the-same sink for a larger bowl and smaller with grates on the bottom and I LOVE it!!!

SINK tap:
If you can, splurge on this thing. I got the kind where the fawcett comes up taller and hoops downwards. The configuration is so much easier to handle when you wish to spray something down.. you grab and go, rather than grab, twist, go. The gal at the plumbing store told me I'd never go back to a regular tap again or with a side sprayer and she was right.

Too funny about the lamp. I have no above the island light as of yet, so am using a tall lamp. And have been in NO RUSH to get a real light. LOL

I'm coming back and reading older posts. I have to agree whole heartedly with the shiny sink. If my sink isn't shiny, I'm not happy! It makes such a big difference in my attitude and always gives me my place to start when I am feeling overwhelmed.
