Our ceiling is begging for a pot rack. I loved ours in our last house that we owned but we left it with the house. Wouldn't it be great if I could make one myself?
I found a Ten Dollar Pot Rack at Wise Bread but my ceilings are high so it has to hang down really far.
Here's one from DIY Home Projects using a metal wall scroll work thingamajig. Like that idea.
Lowe's told me how to do it but there's no way I'm going to measure that much.
So, I'm going to the best source {you} before I go to the second best source {ebay}. Have you made or seen a neat hanging pot rack?

Use an old window as your frame and the add hooks:large cup hooks would be ideal for pans and eye hooks to attach the chain to hang. Paint to match your kitchen.

I saw a really cool one made of a painted vintage ladder once.
You know those old metal decorations that went on old screen doors or gates (not the flimsy aluminum ones but these are HEAVY... maybe cast iron?) Anyway, I live near Fredericksberg, TX (if you've never heard of it, it has the neatest little shops etc. and is known worldwide) and I have seen one piece of those screens painted and then hung as a pot rack with s hooks. I was just about to tell you about the iron scrolly thingys...but then I realized you already linked to something similar. I think it would be really cute to cover the chain with fabric. Chains are just plain ugly to me! I've seen one done in black iron, and it was darling!
I used to have a big, sturdy picture frame that I put those screws with the eyeholes in, then used chain to hang it to the ceiling. Then I took S hooks, drilled holes into the frame, and hung the S hook through the frame, then the pots on the S hooks.
I've seen ladders and even copper pipes that were made into a frame, that were also beautiful. I know you'll come up with something great!
I think the $10 pot rack idea is good but it'll probably cost you more than that to get enough chain to hang it low enough. But really, that's all you'd have to do-get a rough estimate of how much chain you think you'll need, add 6" per length of chain to give yourself some wiggle room, and paint it to match the rod. Or skip painting the rod entirely and cover it with fabric.
And give it some tassels on each end, natch!;-D

I like the idea of using a wall grill, S hooks and chain to put it together, but it would have to be just the right grill (to me anyway).

I have no idea how to help you because my ideas only get as far as something involving PCV pipe and I'm thinking that's NOT what you have in mind, and work better for little girls' bed canopies anyway. I'm interested in what the end result will be though.
I should put a pot rack up in the middle of my kitchen as a wind chime--like every time my husband walks into them and they clank together. Cuz our ceilings are only 7.5 feet high and we have no island and I'm kind of a twerp.
The only way I could have a pot rack in my kitchen is if we crawled on our hands and knees to walk around the kitchen. Sorry I'm no help. But I look forward to what you come up with!

I wanted one that I found in a store that was out of a vintage ladder, but it was over $50, so my hubby just whipped one up. Wasn't hard. At least for me, all I did was tell him what I wanted : )
As with most of my decorating schemes, it's all about what I find first. And only then does it happen.
I've also seen the old ladder used as a potrack and do you think I saved the link?!? It's what I also have in mind for above my own island.

I just wanted to share what I made years ago...I used an old window frame {without the glass}. I used hooks on each corner and brought the chains together on each side leaving. I then took the two[brought together sides}and used another hook for the main chain. Sorry I do not have any pictures because it was so long ago. It really did look neat. I bought one for a song a few years ago and love it. Good luck in your search. To me the searchin' is the fun part!
I so want a pot rack...but my kitchen layout doesn't allow for that luxury.

Yeah, I made one out of an old window frame for my Mama's house. Attach with cahin to the length you want and use eye hooks to hang the pots from. I didn't paint it, I left it distressed looking. Turned out great!

Re: the pot rack: I read somewhere once about someone using one side of a baby crib to make a pot rack. Done right (maybe with part of a vintage crib?) this could look really neat and would be pretty big in terms of scale.

Why not buy a drapery rod, hang it from the ceiling, attach the drapery rings and then use hooks to attach to pots? Seems pretty simple, streamlined, and affordable! You could also find some neat finials for the end to dress it up or down as you need!
Long ago (before we built this house), we had a pot rack my husband made me from copper pipe. It was sort of a ladder design. It looked really good. I decided I didn't want one in this house.

I saw in a book a garage sale iron gate turned into a rack. Looked really cool. Someday I'll have a ceiling high enough to have a pot rack. Until then, I'm on the lookout for garden gates.
so I saw some made out of an old bicycle wheel and also one made out of a ladder. In the mountains i've seen them made out of an old long hand saw (which if you are interested I will sell you the one I have lying around for $5 - i think we are in the same area)

I had one from Pier 1 a few years ago that I really liked and it hung the right way with our high ceilings. It was only like 25 bucks.

My aunt has a green chippy window (with the panes of glass removed) and has it hung from her ceiling with chains and hooks. It looks cute...not sturdy enough for loads of pots, but it definitely takes some of them out of her cupboards.

For character, I also love an old iron gate! However, for about $30 IKEA has a simple but VERY strong pot rack-ours holds two different sets of Calphalon. And it comes with LOTS of chain (we have a 9 ft. ceiling and we didn't even need to use it!) Love mine! Good luck---Conniekool@hotmail.com

Well Anon beat me to the IKEA pot rack, but I've also seen one made out of a grill rack or a cooling rack (you know, for cakes or cookies). It was spray painted red (that's why I remember it so well) and they used S hooks for the pots and chained it to the ceiling (they painted the chain and S hooks yellow, which was gorgeous).
You could do the $10 pot rack you posted, just lower it with some chain.
I can't wait to see what you come up with!

Does it need to be large or could it be small?
I've seen smaller ones made from a wooden serving tray with hooks screwed into the bottom for the pot handles to hang from, and chains attached to the handles for hanging purposes. Lids can fit in the tray itself.

Big heavy chains from Lowes or Home Depot. And some kind of industrial hooks. And somehow incorporate those arms you see sticking out of trunks at Halloween -- something like that.
That first one you are showing looks as simple as it can get. Should be very inexpensive, too...Now you got me wantin' one...:)
The ladder idea looks great - I love it b/c you can paint it up and add a little color to the kitchen without painting any walls.

It is an iron 'basket' thingamajig I found on the roadside. My ceilings are to low to utilize it. You are welcome to it....i will try to take a pic of it later today.

You could also use iron pipe and fittings to mimic that first picture on this post. Lowe's will even cut it for you. You can spray paint it to match whatever floats your boat. :D

They used chicken wire instead of a screen... And you could vary the length of the chain to get it to where you want it to be. =)

I bought mine from IKEA for $20! It is black, rectangle shaped and has a shelf on top, very sturdy. I love it, it's adjustable too. Love it. Did I say that already?
1. Take a family trip to Dollywood. Colonial Williamsburg would probably also suffice.
2. Stop by the blacksmith's forge.
3. Let your husband stand and talk with the blacksmith for 45-90 minutes.
4. Come home and sit your husband down at the computer. Guide him to various hammer selling websites.
5. Wait 1-5 years, $200-$2000 and 100,000 nails and hooks later you'll have a relatively expert blacksmith who can build anything you want of iron.
Or you could follow any of the hints already given.
We use an old section of French 1850-ish iron fence - I could only afford one section, which was about 2 x 4, and it was too small to go in front of the fireplace which is where I really wanted it, so husband added chain to the 4 corners and up in went. It's on it's 4th house and keeps on ticking.

I love Because I'm the Mama's pot rack!! Years ago in an old, old house with little storage, and few cupboards, I improvised a pot rack on the blank wall over the stove. I hung up a couple of plant hangers, suspended a length of chain from each of them, then attached a dowel to the chain. I must have used eye hooks or something. I remember I painted it all to match. Then I used s-hooks to hang the pots. A curtain rod could work for the dowel... or wood finials could be added to the dowel to dress it up! Can't wait to see yours. Blessings!
If the first idea is too high for your ceilings, you could always use chains to hang the rack from. Like those chains for hanging plants - that's one way to make the rack lower.

I haven't read the comments, so someone may have mentioned this already. Just take a curtain rod or shower rod (I'm sure you have plenty of those around the house! :D) and hand from the ceiling with chain (from Lowes for a couple of bucks). If you want, you can cover the chain with fabric like you do chandeliers. Easy and cheap. And, you can always reuse the rod later.
I love the ones made of vintage windows/screen doors/ladders and then hung to the ceiling with chains.

I made one out of a discarded shutter...added screw in hooks and hung pots all around the edges, draped with grape vine and added grapes..used the top to set pots without handles on. Turned out great and drew lots of compliments.
We made one at our old house using wire restaurant shelving.

Husband hung it from the ceiling using something heavy-duty. At our old house the chrome worked great with the decor - if we were to do it here I'd probably spray paint it with one of those hammered bronze type colors.
I liked the idea of using the metal art. Why not get two identical pieces (maybe at big lots). So from the bottom up: pots, metal thingie, chain, metal thingie, more chain to the ceiling. The second thingie would lengthen the rack for your high ceiling. You'd probably decorate on top of the second thingie with something spectacular!

I took my husband's childhood sled (the old wood and metal rung kind) and hung it from the ceiling. It not only gave me tons of room to hang my pots, but I am able to put a cute basket across the top. It looks great in my country kitchen.
