I used them in the bathroom in the old house but now, they are in the foyer. You don't need a window to soften a room with fabric. Six yards of fabric at $5 per yard {1502 fabrics, Thomasville, NC} is much less expensive than a 8' x 5' rug. Do you have a place that needs softening that could use some drapes--what about that opening to your dining room?

How beautiful! I actually do have a place for something like this. Our living room leads out into our sunroom, through glass sliding doors. Drapes for the glass doors would work great for keeping the open feel between the two rooms while clearly defining each space. Thanks for the inspiration!
We have a little entryway just like this from our balcony to the dining room. I have been telling my husband for months that we should put up curtains there and he keeps telling me to stop being silly.
Now I have to show him this and go out and buy the fabric!

oh Nester... You have got me THINKIN!!!!! I have one of those awful living room which opens into the dining room which opens up into the kitchen with no architectural detail whatsoever, but boy could I FAKE some with a mistreatment!!! bwahahahaha!!! thanks for the stellar idea!
That looks great! Thanks for the constant inspiration... after your post about bathrooms, I redecorated the "dark, dingy one" that I had been overlooking forevah. Hi, Nester. The entry to the dining room looks beautiful! I've been thinking of doing this on my entry (although mine is just an opening, no doors) but couldn't decide on which side to put the curtains... the dining room side or the living room side?!?! Decisions?!?!
Do you have any tips for hanging the rod in sheetrock? Do you also have studs in the wall where you hang or do you have to use those little widgets that are support to expand in the wall when you don't have a stud?

What I love most about all your mistreatments is how much you buy your fabric for! I can never find fabric that inexpensive! They look wonderful AND they're affordable!

I have two sets of double doors in my living room that I have been dying to put curtains over but everyone things I am nuts for wanting to do so. This has been one of my favorite things to do for years now!! I love hanging curtains in our entry way and I've also hung them at the start of hallways. EVERYONE in my life thought I was CRAZY the first time I did this. They now expect it from me ;) although none of them have been brave enough to do it themselves- I still don't understand why???
The curtains look fantabulous! But my favorite thing is the thingamajig in metal, next to the curtains. I LOVE it!

i have used panels to cover window units too..covering ugly!;; and to "section off" potty areas in bathrooms..of course now that i have little boys i would NEVER put nice fabric that close to a potty! ha!

I think the area between the top of the doors and the curtain rod is just _begging_ for some kind of rub-on quote or plaque with words... Nice job. It's beautiful!
I love 1502 Fabrics! Leisure Fabrics in High Point has very cheap prices on fabric too, but you have to hunt (or pillage) :) through all of the piled up rolls to find what you like. It is worth it though to get fabric for $2 or $3 a yard! I got some really cute trim there for $1/yd.
Oh I am going to do this. As a matter of fact the other day my friend and I were on the phone talking about the opening going to our den where there used to be french doors...This is what we talking about doing!!

Scouring my house looking for a doorway I can mistreat. They are all too crunched up against corners or doorways. Never fear, I'm going to mistreat SOMETHING!

Thank you for ending my quest for "art" to go on my wall that looks just like the one you pictured. Our (rental) house has tile floors throughout, and mistreatments will help tremendously with our echo problem as well as make it look better:) I did my kids' windows this weekend with little more than blackout fabric, pretty fabric, upholstery tacks, my glue gun and your ideas. Kids love the look, I love the sleeping past daybreak!
once again you inspire me. I have been contemplating making curtains for our dining room that hang from just below the trim. Because we have plaster and lathe walls this could be a bit of an ordeal and thus dread has kept me from moving forward. But your post today confirmed that I NEED to do it to soften the room and give it a touch of grace

You know where I need mistreatments? On the huge opening from our living room to the kitchen so I can hide the kitchen mess that is visible from the front door if someone shows up unexpectedly--and they always do just when the house is looking it's worst! Okay, mine looks bad all teh time because I'm a horribly inconsistant housekeeper, but I ease my conscious by giving it a good cleaning AFTER people have come and gone so that it has plenty of time to get messy again bor the next surprise visit. Anyway, my husband thinks hanging curtains there is a nutso idea, but I've proved him wrong before and maybe next time he fusses about it, I'll let him do the cleaning. I AM a good delegator.
I have two panels tucked up behind the opening from our entry into the "formal livingroom", then swept in folds over to the side. They provide a visual barrier that 1] directs people toward the *other* opening leading the the kitchen where I *want* them to go, and 2] shields eyes from my creative clutter since the formal livingroom is really my office/workshop space! I loved it the second I put it up, and of course, I was inspired by YOU!!

Um. I'd put the fold back in and lower the rod closer to the window frame.
Unless the drapes are closed... I feel the gap between the rod and where the window/ door actually starts is just too awkward.
Just my opinion.
