Before I can really get going here, I have to take a moment to compose myself. It's just hard not to laugh whenever I come over here to The Nesting Place. The Nester is just too funny!
It also strikes me as a little bit ironic that I'm writing about how to better dress a nest! Up until a year ago, I thought nests were all in trees. Now I know better and I'm honored to be invited here for this guest post!
I'm stumped though. How, on this wonderfully written, witty, and engaging blog, am I supposed to lead into the subject matter..???
Fix Something Broken
I could just hit on the fact that we all know just how annoying those "little things" can be! How they grate on your nerves every single time you see them. Day, after day, after day. But that would be depressing and make me feel bad about my list!
I could tell a story about how my mother-in-law almost hit the floor when she tried to sit in a broken chair (ha!)... well, it's actually not broken, just three-legged. Or I could complain about the cabinet door on the cabinet that holds all my grillin' seasoning... it closes on me every single time! It'll get ya!
If I really wanted to make this a "feature length" post, I could ask my wonderful wife, Kim, a simple question..."um, dear (I don't really say dear), is there anything around here you'd like me to fix?" But let's not go there. It's not a good idea.
The fact is, I could pick any one of a number of things to take care of around here, and every single one of them would result, ever so slightly, in a "better dressed nest!" And every step, no matter how small, makes a big difference!
I've been around people's homes long enough to know that almost everybody has some of the same simple things they could fix in no time flat! Any of these ring a bell:
- Light bulbs need changing
- Door knob is loose
- Door knob made a hole in the wall
- Door needs a knob... :-)
- Towel bar is MIA
- Drawer front can best be described as "precarious"
You get the idea and we both know that once you do that little thing, it's a whole lot more weight off your head than you would think! I put some glue on that broken chair leg just today, and I know I'm breathing easier! Wouldn't want to damage the mother-in-law, now would I?
So, I'm really curious, what little thing do you need fixed? I bet you have some pretty entertaining little problems out there. I'd love to hear about them!

I am totally loving this series. And now I have a project for the afternoon. Broken vase is FINALLY going to be glued! :)
Ooo, where to begin, where to begin...
The problem is that the Mister is the fixer upper kind of guy, so in order to get them fixed I often feel like I'm nagging. Here are just a few fixer upper classics around here...
Every door jamb in this house sticks, or creaks, or there is a 2" gap under the door.
The handrail going up the stairs wiggles just a little too much to make it feel at all safe.
The drip, drip, drip that occurs each and every time we attach our portable dishwasher.
The three knife cuts that magically appeared in our laminate counter tops, which apparently can easily be fixed. Hmm.
And I know you're all thinking, "Come on, become the liberated woman. Wield a power tool, get 'er done."
But its just so much nicer when the Mister does it... :)
Now we need about 235 days to let me fix all the broken things! LOL
I have just been reminded that I have several loose doorknobs. Off to fix them!
You don't have to fix ALL the broken things--JUST ONE! Fix ONE thing today!
Fabulous series!! The thing that needs fixing at my house is the patio door screen...THAT DOG!!!!

I have a cabinet in the kitchen that the middle of the door fell out - it's made of beadboard that had broken into several places and someone had used a belt and staple gun to try to hold it together! Didn't really work. I'm going to get new beadboard and then use those picture frame thingy - my BIL told me the name - to hold it in!

Nice to meet Tim! I'm good on the fixin' front since we have had our house on the market since August and nothing is allowed to reach the broken stage. Love the picture of the two of you ready to tackle and home improvement/decor project! Go Team Nester!
Tim- I so enjoyed your post and also your blog. there is too too much to post about what needs to be fixed around here. We just try to hit one or two a weekend. Then I don't feel so crazy and it gets done. Slowly. But done!

Soooo proud of myself...in the last week I have repaired THREE kitchen drawers! If only I'd done that four years ago! ha. :) Can't think of anything that needs fixin' and that's a nice place to be!
LIGHT BULBS! I can count FOUR just off the top of my head right now :)
And I know I have many many things that need super glue!

Yes! I've been trying to do this. It's amazing the relief that fixing one little thing can give you.
Argh, I think I need to finally fix that toilet in our powder bath this weekend. I broke the seal by standing on the tank whilst painting...silly girl.
oh no...this one is a KILLER!
Let's see.....
I need to: fix the bottom of one of my kitchen drawers.
Put up my 'soap holder' in the upstair bathroom. It was cute, I drilled holes....put in screws...heads to big for it's hanger doodads on the back. (SIGH)
So...off to Lowe's now...I will buy wood glue, light bulbs and small headed screws. This week those jobs shall be done....and well....the others I will start tackling too!

I have a 3 year old who loves taking off all the little twangy door stoppers. So now I have at least 3 walls with indents from the door handles. So I have to replace the twangy door stoppers and patch the indent and then paint. I'm pretty sure I will get to that, someday.
I'm gonna make a list for my husband right now. ;) He's going to love me when he gets home tonight!
Well I have to admit Mr. S. (my husband) does keep things up pretty well, but I do need a bit of painting and a few putty things, love the blog, I am a new follower of yours, come for a visit
I have lots of towel bars that have fallen down and they can't get up!! Probably because I installed them...oh, I am just too tired and on the verge of crying, so that might send me over theedge...maybe tomorrow!
I definitely think fixing just one thing helps you feel better about your nest. We also try to make little improvements as we can. My mom is a realtor and after people do the things needed to get their houses ready for market, they are always like, "The house looks so great, do we really want to move?"
Since we are not in our "forever house" hubby and I are trying to do all the little improvements that would need to be done before we sold our house so we can enjoy them NOW!
PS In our old house I flooded a bathroom because the faucets didn't turn the right way and I tried to fix them. I saw a program on TV that said how simple it was to do, but I missed the part on turning off the water first. After the bathroom dried out, I was so glad they worked correctly and I learned a valuable lesson too.
Thank you for sharing such excellent ideas with us. I am enjoying these 31 days and trying to find ways to include them all in our home.

Hmmmmmm...so many things to fix, so little time! I think i will start with the broken drawer front in my bathroom. It's been sitting there all ugly and jagged and sad for a couple months now. I guess I shouldn't admit that! Off to find some wood glue.....
Here are a fewo fmy questions. Our garage door opener doesn't open. I can hear it trying to move something with the motor, but the chains don't move. And my other question is about our front door. We tried to weather proof it but adding those foam adhesive strips around the door, but there is still serious gappage. Any suggestions? Thanks Tim!

I made a super cute sign for my house (and blogged about it, of course!). It is still sitting on the floor in front of the fireplace, instead of up on the wall where I intended it to go. I got one nail in place, but couldn't reach the second... I asked my sweet husband, and have been waiting 3 weeks. So I guess I am going to have to dig out the ladder from behind the piles in the garage, move the couch, and get that second nail in the wall. It will feel so much better when it is done! Blessings!

I just did this today...I sewed a pillow that had a seam coming loose. I had been meaning to do that for quite a while and it felt good to see it done! I know pillows aren't exactly home improvement style fixing but hey, I can use a little poetic license right?
Oh and Nester, I am going to be so sad when this series ends...I have loved reading your witty, engaging and inspiring posts about getting my nest better dressed!
This was fun! Reading through all of the comments made me not feel so bad about my list... except for the one reader who is married to a remodeling contractor and he takes care of everything... I hope Kim doesn't see that one!

OOOH I did this! I had an outlet cover missing from my sewing room since mid-summer when I repainted the room and cracked the old one taking it off (who glues outlet covers on? This is a weird house...ask me sometime about the fireplace facade in the garage...).
Well, because of Nesters suggestion to do something with a mostly unused space, we cleaned our garage last weekend. Because we cleaned our garage, I knew exactly where there was an entire box of outlet plates. So the outlet has a plate on it, my sewing machine is plugged in, and my sons Halloween costume is done now too! Since I was IN the sewing room, and had the cords out...
He's thrilled, I'm usually still sewing at 5 minutes until trick or treat time! LOL!

Let's see, I have a clock that just broke, a bunch of toys that need new batteries, some hems that need to be fixed, at least one lightbulb that needs to be replaced.......

I have lots around here that needs fixed, but we are in a raggedy apartment and our lease is up in 2 months, so we'll leave it for then, lest our little monsters break it again :)

I always have a list of things to fix or update or paint or change. A loose toilet paper roll, missing towel bar, new dimmer switch, hall light not working, and don't even get me started on the kitchen lights.
Those 15 minutes fixes can build up on a girl.

I fixed our front door deadbolt. It has been broken for a week & we've had to scream through the closed door for people to go around to the gate in the backyard fence... Not exactly a welcoming way to enter our home! : )
I fixed a cupboard in my kitchen! It took some creativity and fabric (unexpectedly) to do the job! I blogged it too, if you want to see pics.
