Take an inventory of your rooms.
Now, find that thing that you've always wondered if it would look right in such and such room and move it. Yes, you. Move it to that room. I'll wait right here. What are you waiting for? It's the easiest thing in the world, if you hate it {after looking at it that way for longer than 2 minutes} you can simply move it back. You didn't waste any money and you've wasted months already wondering how it would look behind the sofa, in the hall, next to the chair, right? Why not just see?
Moving furniture I already have is my favorite way to freshen up my home. I use furniture movers like these, but I've been known to lift up the corners of heavy items and put my socks or a ripped up cardboard box underneath, just to protect the wood floors and help the piece glide smoother.
Unless it's a huge piece or needing to go from one level of your house to another, I bet you could move it yourself. But please don't sue me if you break your back.
What are you moving today?

PS, Oprah is doing a follow up story on my friend Lysa today and her family. Make sure you tune in!

What a fun idea to do a series like this! I like the first two ideas already.
I'm always giving things away. I worked for years as an editor, and I think that same personality trait that makes me want to edit words makes it easy for me to edit things out of my house (they just weigh more).
I was clever enough to make friends with some women who will take anything that's free, so I always know where to go when I have stuff to unload. (ha)
Have a great weekend, Nester! :-)
P.S. I just signed up for BlissDom. Hated to miss the fun with all of y'all next year!
I gotta say, I'm pretty stoked about this series. Since I'm supposed to hit the major baby nesting mode soon (I think I'm really late on that one), this will give me some tools so I'm not randomly putting nails in walls with no purpose. I did hang curtains though! By myself! And they're lovely. Anyway, I'm excited. And I haven't forgotten about your spices. Promise. :)
I read that last line "My friend Oprah is doing a follow up on Lysa..." and then I had to re-read.
I just moved the bookshelf that was in our front living room to our back living room. Before it had no use. Now it is full of use. I'm so happy.
I am moving our office desk! It is against a wall in a closed off loft area. No windows! Who wants to work on anything when you are facing a wall in a room full of them? I think I will just simply turn the desk around...facing the rest of the room (and two huge, beautiful book cases full of books!)
Awesome series! I bet my home will be a different place by the end of October! Thank you!
I couldn't find anything to get rid of yesterday!! but I moved TWO things around in my home this morning. Does that make up for day one? :)
Oh, rearranging my bedroom again has been on my to do list. Maybe I can convince my awesome Hubby to help me. :)
Last weekend I did just this. I was home by myself and decided it was time to stop thinking about whether something would look good here or there and just DO IT. I spent an entire afternoon moving furniture around on our first floor. In the end, the biggest change was that I moved a chaise from one room into our living room and moved an armchair out. The chaise is a better use of a wonky corner and balances out the sofa ... it's ridiculous I didn't try it sooner. I can FEEL the balance when I walk into the room. I love it!
I just got my hands on a small decorator's table...I'm going to move it from the living room to the bedroom as one of my side tables. Yay!
I love moving things around. There's nothing better than getting a whole new look or feel for free.
I am LOVING this series!
Loving this series! Awhile back you visited my blog and encouraged me to move our family room furniture to our living room. Something my husband and I had talked about doing but were afraid to do because we thought it would be wrong somehow. Well, we moved the furniture! And love it in the new room of course. Seems weird to think we've lived in our house for 5 years now and we're just now starting to "nest" and make it our own.
Thanks for the encouragement!
Love it, thanks!
I love to do this!! It's been awhile though...going to look now for something to shuffle...
P.S. This may be just me, but my google reader is not updating that you have updated your blog--for the past 2 days. I can come here and read it, but the reader isn't working. Hmm....
Love this series - you are so ambitious! :) I used to move furniture around myself all the time until I DID finally throw my back out. I'm going to try the idea of putting "furniture movers" along the bottoms of pieces so that it's easier. My favorite was moving the sofa and loveseats finally AWAY from the walls and into the middle of the room. Well, not RIGHT in the middle, but you know what I mean. But I move little tables from one room to the next all the time - like a whole new look for FREE!!!!!!
Sometimes the simplest things help more than we could imagine...if we would just think of them. Great series!

I do move my own furniture! My legs are pretty strong, as well as my backside, when it comes to those heavier pieces! Keep the great tips coming.... Blessings!!!
Thanks for the Oprah alert. Love me some Lysa.
I am loving this series. Thanks!!
p.s. love me some Nester too, ha ha.
I'm not actually moving anything today, but I have been moving things around a lot recently. We moved into our house back in February, and I thought I knew how I wanted the kids' rooms arranged. I recently moved their stuff around after the first try just wasn't right. And after finding you and your talk about the master bedroom, I have done some rearranging there. It is a work in progress. I can't wait to see how it turns out. Thanks for the inspiration!
Love your series!
Have a great weekend!
I just moved my living room furniture around and I LOVE it! It makes me feel happy with my space!
Ya know, I actually read this post after moving a piece of furniture! I have a big coffee table in my living room that I've hated since about 7 days after I bought it. It's too big, it's too dark, I don't really like the style of it, and my kids have knicked it all up. So I decided to pull a cedar chest from our bedroom (that my husband made in high school!) and put it out in the living room. It's half the size of that ginormous coffee table we had. I'm also making a pad to go on top (with some super pretty fabric I found on clearance for $9/yd!) to go on top. For now, it works!
Love all your ideas....as always!!
Oh, moving something is something we can TOTALLY do. I feel like we have too much furniture in our living room, so I might just take something to Goodwill. That involves moving!
A few weeks ago my husband moved a small table that never looked right where I had put it. He stuck it in the corner and put a tall vase I had filled with curvy sticks. It was amazing what that little table being moved did for my attitude about my house. I'm going to think of something else to move now!
I'm going to move a sofa table that hasn't been working anywhere else in this house into the dining room. I don't have anything but the table and chairs in the dining room and don't have the moolah for a proper buffet or cabinet but I think that table just might serve the purpose well. The color of wood on the table doesn't match the dining set so I'm hoping one of these 31 days includes Painting Something. I'll wait and see. ; )
I had to laugh and comment, because I hadn't yet read this post while my son and I were decorating for fall. In the midst of seasonal decorating, I always seem to want to move something, and I just couldn't stop myself from seeing how my thrift store find hutch would look in my kitchen instead of the ugly standalone pantry we have in there now. I LOVE IT! Now, where all of our food is going to go, I'm not sure, but the hutch looks fab! I read your post and suddenly didn't feel like such a fruit loop anymore!
You make it sound so easy! : )
This is so HARD for me. Decorating doesn't come easy, and once I found a place for something, I'm afraid to try it somewhere different. But because you said to, I will try. Hee Hee. : )
I'm LOVING this series. Thank you for doing it.
I've got an end table that needs moving TODAY! great encouragement...now if I could get my little boy to come inside so I could get to work on it...
I just moved around my living room/dining area last week. At first, I thought it looked okay (not my favorite, but nice for a change). Now, I really, really like it.
I love moving things! It is like going shopping! Have a great weekend! I love your tips!
I moved a dresser to our foyer last week and love it, but my great room is a puzzle. Too many french doors and I just never know where to move things. Loving this series, and can't wait for Lysa!
LOVE this series!
Does it count if the upholstered headboard I finished this week is moved from the living room to the girls' bedroom? If not...I might just be lazy and leave it where it is! (hahaha)
OR....can I choose something from your house to move to my house? That would be my first choice!
~Amanda
Mu husband and I are moving our entire bedroom into the other bedroom in our house! I am very excited for this because our current room is just not working out and I think by doing this we will be organizing our entire home better!
I love these simple ideas!
I have been wanting to move my living room around but for whatever reason hubs is against it. I think I may try out the sofa in the place I want it and if I like it have him help me move the rest. The biggest reason I can't move the entertainment center is because it weighs what feels like a million pounds. I am sure that's why hubs got it, to discourage me....LOL
I'm an 18 year old living with the fam still, so the one place that's "my own" is my bedroom...it desperately needs to be rearranged! Seriously, I used to rearrange my room at LEAST once a month. Now, however...picture a set of bunkbeds (I share with my sister), 2 bookshelves, 2 dressers, and a very large upright piano...what's a girl to do!?! But I really, really want to rearrange!! Nester, any ideas? Anyone have any ideas? I want to make this work!
Thanks for doing this series for us Nester! I (pretty much) faithfully read, but I rarely get the chance to comment...but I'm working on that! =)

So timely, what a fantastic idea for a series! I'm 3 weeks into my 2nd trimester with #4. Just realized the beginning of this week that baby and home preparations need to happen ASAP with all typical holiday excitement and preparations and an upcoming vacation planned the beginning of November. Plus the fact that I'm 7 yrs older than the last time I went thru this isn't exactly helping speed things along.
Well I guess I started Day 1 and Day 2 a bit early, but it's taken me longer to complete. I started Tuesday decluttering and rearranging our Living/Family Room (we only have one). It's a long, narrow space and I had it separated by the chaise end of the sectional. This space is completely devoid of symmetry which bugged me big time. However I was completely ignoring the huge lack of balance that resulted. So after purging quite a bit out of the room and moving the sectional into an opposing arrangement, we finally have balance. We also have a renewed focal point with the front double window and the TV is no longer the first thing you notice when you walk into the room.
Oh I should add our living/family room does triple duty, it's also our PC/office station and my scrapbooking space. Everything now flows, the space is opened up and we can easily keep an eye on the kiddos when they are on the PCs. Oh, it's also allowed us to add a pair of chairs into the space for even more seating. Great for all the holiday gatherings coming up.
Thanks! I'll be following along for sure!
Man, you really know how to hit a girl in the gut, huh??! I've been wondering how my big blue (ick) armchair would look in our addition, but haven't moved it b/c I seem to thrive on uncertainty. :s
Thanks for giving me a jumpstart! :)
I have been moving things around all morning actually! Have taken some photos and will post about next week :)
It was a small thing...a Southern Living Acanthus Centerpiece, to be exact....They tell you how many uses there are for it and then you're stuck moving it around your home. Well, 3 years later she has found her home next to the coffee pot with mugs and a "LIVE" plant sitting pretty next to her. I think she even said "thanK you":)
I'm catching up a little late here, but about 2 weeks ago, we finally moved the computer desk with hutch (and computer) into the kitchen. That means no more kitchen table, but here is an island with stools. I am loving this arrangement! I had the computer in the dining room, but, you know, I just never liked it there. I always felt like that made the dining room have MPD.
Thanks so much for taking the time to do this series.

Love this series. I also just posted a piece about moving things from room to room as well. It is amazing how one small change can make a whole room feel new again
I have been moving my stuff since I was knee high to a grasshopper. I love doing that for a fresh view, especially when I don't have the cash flow to buy all new things, which is always.
I moved something... not sure if I like it yet. We shall see.
I'm behind and haven't even read today's post yet, but had to come back to this old post and tell you I 'accidentally' moved something this weekend and it made ALL the difference! We steam cleaned our carpets, and when my husband put the lamp and the chair back, he placed them 'incorrectly' --- I hugged him unabashedly and told him the lamp should have been where it is now the whole time! I never knew it til now! It's perfect! I thought of you soon afterward and smiled at your wisdom.

Love the 31 days series so far! I am constantly moving things and furniture around. We recently unpacked the furniture from our 2nd house we had up for sale. I use an old blanket to move the really heavy things on our wood floors- works great!
