Remember how I told you that I kept pulling things out of my yard sale pile to keep? I had already priced a bunch of topiaries but decided to keep them at the last minute. I used them two Christmases ago on my mantle.
I was tired of my unnaturally green, unnaturally perfectly round topiaries.
Then I saw a girl cover a wreath form with moss on her blog. And I thought I added her to the Nest Files/tumblr but I can't find it. If you know who it was, let me know. She was replicating a wreath she saw in Pottery Barn. And it sparked and idea to do the same to my topiaries. Thanks, Lettie, yes it was Carrie from Buzzings of a Queen Bee! . And, Get Your Martha On--that's what gave me the topiary push!
A little hot glue and a bag and a half of moss, and arthritis in my thumb later.
See the difference in the before and after? I have twins. I like how organic and imperfect the made over topiary looks. Boy am I glad I kept these. I sure would be mad if I was reading one of your blogs and you bought my topiaries for $1 each and then made them all cute and happy.
I found that within a few days, the moss kind of dried out and shrunk a little. Which was fine. The fresher moss was fluffier and brighter. I like how the moss has yellow undertones instead of bright green. Remember how we've talked about what to look for with fake plants? Now I'm looking all over for stuff I can cover in moss. Wreath coming soon. What have you covered in moss?

Love the moss topiary look!! I'm looking around my house for something to cover in moss now!
Good news, you're not crazy--I saw that on your tumblr! It was buzzings of a queen bee and I think it was a blogspot address. I love the topiaries and loved her wreath! Such a good idea. I made one for my front door.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the "new" moss topiaries!!! Who would of thought to re-cover old topiaries?...only AMAZING YOU!
Thanks for such a GREAT idea!!
Blessings!
Jill
Hi Nester! I have done the same thing to my fake moss topiary. They look so much better with the real thing! I'm sure they'll look amazing with your sophisticated decor style! Best, Vanessa
May or may not have been me?

I lightly mist my moss wreath now and then. Not sure it helps, but psychologically, I feel like I'm keeping something alive.
Well I just love your topiary! I have some that need a little work too, hmmm. I think I could definitely give that a try. Thanks Nester.

I used moss a lot for my wedding decor.
I will need to find pics of them all. But my mom and did monogram wreaths for the doors. My husband and I both have the letter 'M' for our first name, we now have them hung in our foyer.
I also made our table numbers. I bought cardboard 3D numbers from PaperSource spray painted them silver and put them on a wood base covered in moss.
And last but not least, I covered rectangular floral foam with moss that held our tossing cones.
Much better! Moss has magical powers~the one I have bookmarked is Carrie's from Buzzings of a Queen Bee~I loved it!

And Richella is giving away a Vietri "Rudolfo" chip and dip set!
I made moss topiaries for my mantle last year. Maybe I'll do a post about them, for I made them from scratch. Very easy, and no wonderful garage-sale finds required.
Love you!
Richella
Good Work! Looks SO Pottery Barn. :)
Hey, how neat! That's me and my husband on the canvas picture! (Julie is our friend)
I have a similar topiary in my master bathroom (there is a picture of it at my blog). Mine was even easier (but I hate to admit it). I bought the topiary balls already stuck on the stem and already covered with green moss (not as organic looking as yours though). All I did was stick it in a pot with floral foam and cover that little bit with moss.
Problem now is I would like to make its twin but they don't sell it anymore.
i have personally completely covered my garage roof with moss on the North side. It's been a labor of love. OK, fine. God did it, and I have messed up his handiwork. That's the only thing moss covered around my place ;-) But i love your topiaries, and now I want some moss!
Great idea to reuse something you already had. They look wonderful!
Very nice! I love things covered in moss. What a natural way to decorate! I'll bet you're glad you removed them from the sale!
Darn it, now I have to get the moss back out because I am feeling the itch to moss something all up. Your topiaries are fantastic!
Carrie
Not a cotton-pickin' thing! But once again, Nester, you get me a-thinkin'!
Have a beautiful day!
I saw that moss wreath too and filed it away for spring...but now I see I should do it now. Quickly.
Love the moss topiaries, but never got one for the same reasons! now I will have to try this whole moss thing out.
i covered grapevine topiaries from hobby lobby with sheet moss for my wedding in june, and they're still looking lovely around my house today! I posted about making them here:
http://pinkpaisleybride.blogspot.com/2009/04/sit-down.html and there are pictures of them in action at the reception on my photographer's site here: http://jmalahy.bigfolioblog.com/weblog/post/112810 we lined up one- and two-ball topiaries of different sizes on the mantel and interspersed them with candles and natural paper stars - it was lovely. we also made our initials in floral foam and covered them in moss, then hung them from the double doors with some great pink/green/white gingham ribbon. all of the moss items still look great around our home, and we assembled them over 6 months ago!
LOVE your topiaries! I love doing projects with moss. During the summer months I was lucky to get a lot of it from the outdoors near our home. It is too cold and wet to do that now, so I have resulted in buying it. I just finished some moss trees, and I am using the remaining moss for another project.
Oh topiary... lookin' good! The moss is always messy to work with, but after taking a look at yours, I can do it!
Love your topiaries!
I've used moss before. I covered our flower girl's basket(handle and all) for our wedding. It rocked... and still looks beautiful - ten years later.
Love it! Reindeer moss is one of my staple items. I've covered a wreath, letters for a friend's nursery, and our initials (for both our front door and an inside wall) and some round orbs. But like you, I'm always on the look out for something else to cover in it!
I use reindeer moss on about everything, and sheet moss...I also make my own moss balls and sell them and you won't believe how fast those hot cakes sell!!! super cute love it with the dark flooring!~
I so would have bought those topiaries at your sale. What else did you pull back in?
Yes! I love moss! I have covered styrofoam balls with them, wrapped them in no certain way with copper wire, or ribbon, decorated with pretty upholstery tacks, and scattered them both under and in my Christmas trees. They look great hanging in a window, with votive candle along hte window sill (far beneath, obviously).
I like those. I'm half-heartedly thinking of trying to make a wreath, wondering if it's safe to use a hot glue gun while nursing. I'm thinking not. But watch the pyscho who is me, try it anyway.
And why, of all things does this make me think of the movie "You've Got Mail" when Steve Zahn's character is telling Meg Ryan and the other chick that he has a date that night and is getting eucalyptis candles to make his apartment smell mossy?
Methinks I should do less movie watching, and more one-armed-potentially-baby-maiming crafting. (so kidding about the maiming.)
I wonder how well fake moss stands up to the elements if I hang this not-yet-made-that-so-far-might-only-exist-in-my-head wreath on the front door.
Super cute topiary. I have some moss we collected from my uncles property in Bainbridge Island, WA. I finally have a purpose for it!!! Thanks for sharing...
So, if you place it outside as a decoration, would it keep greener with the extra humidity?
What a great post. Love it.
Super cute! I have the exact same topiary with white/gold pot, may need to cover.
I made some personalized moss topiaries awhile back you may like -

Take care,
Alyshia
Maybe if I covered my couch in moss I could get it to look better than it does...it certainly couldn't look worse. ;) Love your topiary makeovers!
Oh, I love those topiaries! I am going to have to try and replicate your idea for my own home. Thanks so much for sharing.
Love this - it really looks so much better, and more natural.
Oh my word, I am squealing with delight!!!! YAY!!!!!! So happy and THANK YOU SO MUCH for the chance to win this awesome prize!!
