Winter Apothecary Jars

There is something about these glass apothecaries that lend themselves to any season. I guess it could be the fact that they are clear and pretty and you can put anything you want inside them.

Shells, an old finial, pretend eggs and nests, fake snow, silver anything, tiny bottle brush trees, berries, rocks, notes, nuts, ribbons, buttons, coins, photos, tiny frames, toys, Christmas ornaments...

What do you put in your apothecary jars?

Right now I have some sugared fruit and glittered leaves and pinecones in one. In one of the little domes on a stand I have an old, treasured ornament, resting on a bed of fake snow. In the kitchen (where snowmen reign LOL), I have a larger one of those domes on a stand with a skating scene (figures from a christmas village) on snow. Also a vintage looking glitter snowman under a small cloche. A large cloche on a table with two victorian children and a decorated vintage bottle brush tree.

Since I have different things/scenes in my jars and cloches, I prefer to use them alone or in small groupings. I use bell jars and apothecary jars year round. Love them!

I have my one of my grandparents wedding presents in a cloche - 6 glittered paper snowmen playing different instruments, and some vintage silver tinsel garland that was also my grandparents. I only have 2 strands, so its not enough to do my whole tree.

I don't have any apothecary jars at all. Not one. Can you believe that? But then again, with three huge boys and two dogs, maybe I'm better off without any. Yours look beautiful, though!

Nester, thanks so much for showing these! I've wanted to see them since you showed your white tree last week.

I don't have anything in my apothecary jars, because I don't have any yet! But now I have great ideas for when I get some!

Anything put into a glass jar suddenly becomes special. Love how these look.

For Christmas, they have ball ornaments in red, silver, and red&white stripes. The rest of the year, one has rocks and shells, one has faux eggs, and the other changes seasonally, faux lemons/pears, autumnal apples/pears/berries. Love how you can do so many wonderful things with them.

I have a small one on an end table that usually has peppermints in it. But my children can't stop eating them and so more often than not, it is empty! You amaze me that you have 3 boys and have breakables and white around. Shiny glass screams "touch me and test me" to my kids.

I have not a one! But I think that perhaps I WILL have some before it's over. ;) Those are TOO pretty!

I know, I am still amazed that they are not broken into little shreds!

I've only had one break and it was because I broke it!

These are beautiful! I have eggs, moss, old door knobs, and old photos in mine. I need to freshen them up a bit. After Christmas, I think I'll move them to a new location and do something different.

I just did a post yesterday on how to make your own winter cloche/snowscape! I love them!

I'm so happy to see this post today...I have three jars and only one of them is filled (with ornaments) and for some reason I had no clue what to put in the others. I think I'll pick up a little tree today because I love the one with the tree and the snow...so cute.

I am glad to see that it's okay to group apothecaries, b/c that's what I've been doing and I wasn't sure if it was okay. :) I love the little silver buttons (?) in yours. So cute!!

I LOVE these...i put a few on my list for Santa...as I'd love to use them in my craft room for my rolls of ribbon!

I love that faux fur tassel! Your jars always look great, probably due to the "mix" of stuff in them!
Right now, my jars are full of gumballs & huge lollies, and vintage ornaments. I still have to unpack the rest of my apothecary jars!
Blessings,
Stacey

I love the jars! I have a few filled with seashells, rocks, and whatever we love. I need to add some Christmas love to all of them but I doubt I group them like yours...even though it looks very pretty :-)

Something else in your pics have picqued my curiosity...How on earth did you tie the ribbon around your lamp shade at such a great angle without having it slip and slide?! Did you pin it? I love the look!!

Have a blessed weekend!!

I was so jazzed last summer to snag a very large apothecary jar for a song. But it has sat empty ever since. I've tried filling it with things but I don't like any of it. Finally I decided it's the shiny glass I don't like. I am not a shiny person at all. I like matte things. When you did your tablescape tutorial I tried really hard to use a shiny globe but couldn't bring myself to do it. I used a wood ball instead. So, that's the long way around the barn to say my large, ultra cheap, apothecary jar is now in my swap pile.

I love displaying things in jars. They always make what your displaying seem so much more important and classy. Even when it is candy or macaroni or even pinecones. Yours are very beautiful.

Right now I have a huge jar filled with Hershey candy of all kinds and Dove too...
Hubby hates when I leave candy out in a dish so I just filled the jar!

You have inspired me to up the ante on my Christmas decorating! When I get home at night I figure I should a)spend time with the family OR b)decorate for Christmas. I don't feel guilty for choosing family, but it sure does feel good to get a little fire lit under me for the decor!
Also, THANKS so much for posting the GOOGLE READER youtube tutorial. It has been life-changing!

I put most of my small ones away but I filled up the biggest ones with lime and red glass ornaments.

I have these all over the house! Mostly they're on my dining table right now, filled with snow and pine cones. I use them year round. For fall I filled them with acorns and leaves, and in the summertime I fill them with fruits or shells.

I have bright colored candies in mine. I put different candy in to match the holiday--my kids know the candy is three years old and stale so they leave it alone!

I don't have any apothecary jars (yet) but I use tall cylindrical vases the same way.

I have one that is filled with a collection of all white pot pouri. It looks and smells fantastic.

I intend to start collecting apothecaries when I can find them on sale. Your collection is inspiring!

I lucked into some...Christmas 2007. Actually, it was just *after* Christmas, because before Christmas, the trio would have run me close to $150! There was NO WAY I was spending that much on some glass jars. I don't care how versatile they are! LOL

I got them after Christmas for a combined total of I *think* $30. Maybe less. I don't think I would have spent more than that. LOL.

I've picked up several more while thrifting over the last year, year and a half (since we moved and I had places to put them).

I've got five children under 9, and so horizontal spaces are *not* low...lol. I've got my jars all grouped on my dresser in the dining room. I've sadly neglected them the last few months--never got around to changing out the seashells I put in there for summer.

I will be using epsom salts in mine for winter, but I'm not sure what to put in them. I do have a cedar growing here, but I'm not sure how long cut branches will last, put down into the salts...does anyone have any ideas? I'd use some of my ornaments, but I don't know what the salt's effect would be on the glass and paint...again, does anyone have ideas?

This is my biggest want in all of the decorating world. It is the one thing that I have had to have the most patience about buying. I have three kids - two of them are four and two years old. I am terrified that if I buy and decorate with GLASS that it will only last inside of a week before I am sweeping up apothecary guts and shards from my living room floor. I'm thinking like in three more years we'll be safe. I'd put them up high, but then you can't see all the little pretties inside. **sigh** one day.

I actually am so glad I started reading your blog about 9 months ago! I used to have the mindset that my shells and beach-y type stuff could only go up in the summer. And I have a TON as we take every vacation at the beach which is 2 hours away. I have huge pieces of coral, sand dollars, every size of starfish; etc, etc. I love how you mix them in with every season and make it look fabulous. This year I mix the shells with pinecones, acorns, and Christmas ornaments and it looks really fabulous. I can't wait to join the Christmas tour on Monday :) Thanks for your inspiration.

I am about to fill one tonight so I am glad to have read this. I am thinking red and white things although I don't know exactly what yet. I do have one with exquisite looking old-fashioned ribbon candy in it that I bought on after Christmas clearance 75% off and saved for this year. Kelly
