I wanted to share this with you so that you can be at the ready when going into some of these wonderful fabric stores! Kimberley just emailed this to me--it's a play by play of her experience with a fabriteer as I like to call them. Read on, and enjoy...
here's Kimberley:
I simply must share my conversation with the clerk at the snooty fabric store where I purchased my mistreatment supplies!
Clerk (middle-aged, attractive, though not pretty, uptight!!!!): How can I help you today?
Me: I need 4 yards of this fabric (a fabulous animal print that was only $13.95/yard, which is a miracle at this store!!!!!)
Clerk: This is a lovely fabric, what are you working on?
Me: (Here we go...) A decorator's table skirt and two window treatments.
Clerk: Are you sure 4 yards is enough fabric?
Me: Yes, I believe so. I need 3 yards for the table, and whatever is left will be used for the windows.
Clerk: You don't know how much fabric you need for your window treatments?
Me: Not exactly, but I'm sure a yard will do the trick.
Clerk: Are you working with a designer?
Me: Yes.
Clerk: Well, what kind of window treatments has she designed?
Me: Upholstery tack valances.
Clerk: Are you using one of our recommended designers?
Me: Nope.
Clerk: Who exactly is your designer?
Me: Nester.
Clerk: Who? I've never heard of Nester, and I know all the designers in town!
Me: She's not in town. She's online.
Clerk: She's an online designer? How does she conduct her consultations online?
Me: She doesn't.
Clerk: Then how do you know what you are doing?
Me: I don't, I'm just looking at her pictures online and following her step-by-step instructions.
Clerk: I've just got to see this. Do you have her website? (She boots up her laptop.)
Me: Go to thenester.com. Yep, there she is. Click on the right hand side where it says window mistreatments. There you go!
Clerk: (After spending several minutes scrolling madly!) Well, these do look nice online, but I can guarantee you they don't look all that great in person!!!
Me: I don't know about that! My kitchen and family room look pretty fabulous--And all I needed were some upholstery tacks and unmeasured fabric with rough edges!!!
Clerk: (flustered) I'll have your fabric ready for you in just a minute. Did you say you needed trim?
Me: Yes.
Clerk: How much?
Me: Oh, I don't know, lets just eyeball it!
Let's hear it for Kimberley!!!!!!!!
Talk about facing the giants! For a minute there I didn't think the fabriteer was gonna let her make a purchase! I know she was just trying to be helpful but shesh! Can a person not go in a fabric store and buy $60 worth of something without being grilled? I mean, my checkout girl at the grocery doesn't ask what I'm making for dinner and then continue to tell me how I'm gonna burn it and mess up the recipe!
I sometimes feel like some of those women were just waiting to convince me that whatever it was I was doing couldn't be done without the help of them and a $100 per hour designer. When they ask me what I am doing with what I am buying I've learned not to tell them! I'll just say that my mom asked me to pick up a few yards of such and such for her or mumble something impossible to understand.
I'll be the first to say that there are some wonderfully, brilliant, encouraging fabriteers/designers out there--let's hear it for Jennipher {yes, that's how she spells her name so funky!} at Printer's Alley--this girl encouraged me to sell my tassels at a local shop! And I cannot forget Debbie out at 1502 she walked me through a purchase of 60 yards of fabric for a COM order! These girls really helped me make some great decisions!
But for all those poshy 50-something ladies {edited to add: poshy 20-something, 30-something, 40-something, 60-something and 70-something [thank you readers for pointing that out]} out there who believe that it must be perfect to be beautiful--give us mom's a break! Maybe we want our house to be beautiful but we also want to have enough money left over to sponsor a compassion child. Maybe we were nervous about even walking into your fancy store. Maybe we can only come with our children. Maybe we just want to be encouraged that we can do it ourselves and within our budget. Maybe we need to to be reminded that
it doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful!
Lately, if I need something from a fabric store, I'll visit Fabric.com, etsy supplies or ebay first, I wonder if those fabriteers miss me? Have your fabric shopping experiences been good?

You are so right, Nester! There are some brilliant fabriteers out there...I love my decorating diva, Nancy! But, your signature line "it doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful" has saved me endless hours of obsessing about my windows and sprung me into action!!!! And, if I don't like the results, I've not wasted hundreds of dollars...like the custom silk drapes beneath the beach towels in my linen closet! Awe, I bet that fabriteer is at home right now ripping down her custom panels and tacking up something she really loves!

I am an interior designer who really hates the snooty image so many in this industry try to impress others with. Yuck! Your fabulous window treatments have inspired me, and your fun fresh attitude are what it is all about.
If it isn't fun- don't do it! They're windows for pete's sake- not world peace. Love your mistreatments, and can't wait to mistreat my windows this weekend:-)
Okay...I want to stand up on my chair and clap. That was just too awesome, Kimberley! Haven't we all been there at one point or another with a snooty salesperson? (insert angry eyebrows here)

"WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DIDN'T MEASURE YOUR WINDOW?! HAVE YOU EVER SEWN ANYTHING BEFORE?!"
I am a firm believer that holding my hands out and saying "it's about yea-big" is a very accurate measurement.

How sad, sad, sad, to think you need a blasted hoity, toity designer to have a pretty home. That is why we all LOVE YOU TO PIECES...you give us gorgeous, doable, inexpensive, designer treatments for sooooo much less. You should have invited that stuffy lady over to your house for viewing. My husband digs beautiful, modern furniture out of the trash. It's never perfect but it works and it's beautiful because God provided it, we're creative with it, and we enjoy it!

What a great post...this crosses all lines. Women on women snootyness is the worst. Why are we so hard on fellow woman. Its snooty fabric ladies, its working vs. stay at home moms, it's home schoolers vs. public school, it's breastfeeding vs. formula...everyone has there own style. All are okay. Torn fabric vs. hemmed and lined window treatments if it works for you thats whats important. Mistreatments work for me and I'm thrilled to be a client of the Nester's online service!!!
Hillarious conversation!!! I got your tassle yesterday and was so excited (the nest with one lone egg)!! I was so excited though I couldn't get into the box you taped it so good!! After I ripped the box to shreds I took it out to look at it and love it! I promptly hung it on my china cabinet so you can see it right when you walk in. Thank you!!
I have never been grilled when purchasing fabric! i am glad that your friend stood up to the woman!
You have touched on one of my biggest pet peeves. I do clothing alterations. I did it full time many years to support myself and my children when I was a single parent. So, I was in the fabric store a lot.....matching just the right thread....picking up a zipper ( when I got low between supplier shipments).....and they always asked that question "what are you making?"
......they saw me several times a week....and they always asked. I just grit my teeth and answered. I felt like saying something like "Oh, it's a new zipper for my Striptease costume" but I never did! What a missed opportunity. :-) Rosie

I don't remember if I have ever commented before -- I've been reading since Mrs. Wilt linked to your window mistreatments a few weeks ago. I love them, and I say that as a 50-something lady, a home economics major, and a former fabric store sales clerk. :-) Even with all that, sewing is not my best thing, and if it had to be perfect it would never get done. (Just don't let my former adviser know I said that...)
When I worked at a fabric store we were encouraged to ask the customers what they were making as a way to make conversation (one of the things I hated about retail sales was that everything from the way we answered the phone, with phrases a mile long that the customer didn't want to hear, to what we said to customers was regulated). And sometimes that question brought awkward answers -- like the guy who was buying cheesecloth to make his homemade beer or the dancers at a g*y bar -- and I had thought a fabric store would be such an innocent place to work!!
But as a customer I do hate being asked.
When I worked we didn't recommend designers, but I wonder if the stores are now doing that to boost sales if they are somehow working with the designers. But I am suspecting it might have to do with not wanting to deal with customers bringing something back and wanting a refund, so they are trying to make sure they cut things to the right lengths to begin with. But that's just speculation. When I worked there our store did accept returns but another store in town didn't. I believe Wal-Mart does -- at least the saleslady told me so when I was mulling over a purchase -- but I don't know about the other stores in town. But it was disheartening to spend a long time helping a customer with a purchase one day only to have her bring it back later, or come back for more fabric and then be upset because it was all gone.

This cracked me up. I have to tell you that when I worked as a designer's assistant, the designer told me on my first day of work that I should "Never sell a customer a window treatment that costs less than $1,000." Yikes! And this was in the '90s. I'm sure he's upped the amount by another $500 by now, at least! Crazy. -Julia

Last time I bought fabric I was asked what I was making... I sheepishly told the lady I was just recovering my computer chair. She gave me a confused look so I decided to tell her I was going to use a STAPLE gun to do cover it too! The horror!

I wanted to tell you that I tried the scrapbook paper thing in my china cabinet but I was so upset because the the distance between my shelves are taller than 12 inches. I wanted to do it so bad but didn't want to piece it together. :) It was a GREAT idea though. Keep posting fun ideas! I'm inspired to "mis-treat" some of my windows now!

I felt like I could have written the exact same story. Even "IDHTBPTBB" might not agree with my philosophy....(and neither did my Momma for that matter). I recently made a shower curtain without the "strongly recommended" 5 yards of fabric that the fabriteer INSISTED I must buy. It was a lovely paisley and since I don't care which way paisley's stand....I did it sideways. And ya know what?...I think it's mighty lovely (and much cheaper) :) p.s.....I also performed a simultaneous “distressment” (yeah, I made that up...it means = to distress) job on my coffee table with the “wood burning” fabric glue I used to attach the fringe to said shower curtain. P.s.s Walmart sells some markers that touch that right up too...plus it matches the nicks and dings lovingly placed by my precious toddler’s cars and trucks.

Excuse me, but I'm a 50 something mom of grown children and I am anything but "poshy". Just b/c you reach a certain age doesn't mean you are able to decorate and not give a thought to the budget. Girl, I am sensitive enough about my age, please don't make me feel worse.

The whole thing is just funny isn't it.
Creativity doesn't necessarily come from a design degree. People are so uptight sometimes and guess what?!? It makes me sad for them.
This was good. I understand that designers go into this business to earn money, but not everyone can afford one. Most importantly, not everyone NEEDS one. There's a lot of us out there that know it can be done for a lot less money. We just need guidance--from people like the Nester! :)
I'm new to this decorating thing and so I get all/any fabric I need at...Hobby Lobby...I know that probably makes you shutter a little. Sorry. But it suits my beginner needs.
And as a general rule I don't ever shop in a snooty store as a form of protest against the...well, snooty. But I always encourage my kids to be a little louder and super friendly if a 'snoot' should venture into my territory...Target, Walmart, Hobby Lobby... you get the idea.:)

Ooh that clerk would have made me sooo mad!! I had window mistreatments that I fashioned after a photo in a Mary Emmerling book and I loved them. When people came into our home they always complimented the window treatments. One day I had a designer acquaintance come to give me a little advice and she ripped the treatments. I looked at them after she left and said, too bad I still like them!
Who said "they" are right and we are wrong?! :0>
The only fabric shop in town is a little quit shop. So, I have to go to the big city for anything other than quilt fabrics. Those women can be snooty, though. How nosy. :) Thank you for sharing your fabric resources online. I need to check those out.
I have to wonder how a retail clerk is supposed to behave with you lot? Because it seems to me if they show a geniune interest in what your project is that you feel like you're being grilled but if they don't show an interest than you're ticked that you didn't receive service... so basically you expect the clerk who has no idea of your skill level to assess your project needs and sell you the appropriate supplies without asking you what your project is??? I'm so glad I'm not in retail....
I absolutely agree IDHTBPTBB and I love Nester's ideas but let's remember those girls in retail have it tough too dealing with demanding customers. I've heard all about it from a dear friend of mine and it's unbelieveable how some people behave in fabric stores and the things they let their kids do!

You are so right that most people are going the extra mile and wanting to really be an asset when asking if they can help. That's why I mentioned by name two women that have personally helped me tremendously.
However, I have a feeling that everyone reading this has experienced some persnicketyness especially when it comes to the design industry.
My personal experience {Kimberly's too} in some of the high end fabric stores is that the workers want to know what I'm making, how I'm making it and then proceed to tell me I'm doing it wrong.
I'm hot gluing the fabric people. They are NOT happy about that.
I am laughing because I just had a very similar experience yesterday at the fabric store. :) I even said to the woman (in a nice way) "Look, I know this sounds strange to you, being in the line of work that you are, but really, it doesn't have to be perfect. Let's just estimate the yardage." I don't think she liked it too much, but I don't have the emotional capacity right now to make my new curtains perfect...they just have to look pretty and be able to (kind of) block the windows sometimes. Thanks for the laugh!

I went to the hardware store and wanted to buy some boards. My new garage had a very skinny concrete ledge and how was I supposed to stack my rubbermaid bins of decorating supplies against the wall when they would just topple off that little ledge? So, I went to the hardware store like I said to buy some boards. I didn't have any specs, I just knew I could eyeball it. I walk in. Start to head toward where I think wood would be when an older gentleman (who are usually soo wonderfully helpful in hardware stores) approached me, asked what I wanted and I told him. He asked what I was building. I felt like he was holding me up but tried to patiently explain what I was trying to do. He proceeded to discuss this with me (can't remember the whole conversation at this point) and ended up asking what kind of car I drive! He told me that as an former police officer he could not let me put boards in my car. WHAT??? I left and went to Home Depot, got what I wanted, a nice man cut them for me and home I went happy as a lark to finish my project! :) Kelly

Loved the post back then, too! I find a pretty good experience at most because I shop at the outlet ones and they aren't as snooty. There is one higher end shop in town that puts me on edge. There is one REAL gal in there and I try to get with her for help. I also try to limit visits there if at all possible but their fabric is so stinking pretty! Thanks for the scoop on online resources - will definitely check those out!

I am 54..and I teach 44 elementary Pre-K students a day.....I am not poshy, and I definitely AM a mom..even if my sons are in college or working as an engineer. I have gone into fancy clothing boutiques at times, to have very young and snooty females look at me as if "you are too old, not rich enough, and way too big to be in here." We should all be able to shop or browse where we want, and we should all be treated with respect......and most of all..we should all realize that we ALL go through all phases of life......

I felt this way the first time I read this entry, and I feel the same now!
It seems that there is some gentle disagreement with this post! I read it last year and now again, and it just doesn't seem kind to me. I know there are a lot of hip, hip, hurrays out there, but maybe if we can't say something nice, we just shouldn't say it?

Nice and encouraging. I have a snooty fabric store where I live, too. Luckily, yesterday a strange man was working and I got the loop on his old TCBY job and wardrobe. I guess I should be lucky I wasn't grilled on the remnants I was getting. ha ha

I have walked out of a store before, due to snotty salesgirls. You would think in this economy they would be grateful for those of us buying $20/yard fabric. When I told her I was recovering chairs, she said "You need someone who knows what they're doing to have it done right." Well, I can do it. Sure, the first was trial and error, but staples can be removed.
The store I finally bought fabrics was so helpful. When I had to go back to get another couple of yards (because they didn't have enough the first time), the lady remembered me (from only one trip) and asked how they were looking. That is now my favorite fabric store.

OMG ! I'm so glad someone else has experienced this! I thought it was just me. Usually when I'm buying fabric and get asked "the question" (what are you going to make) I have to fib and make up something. BECAUSE the real reason I'm buying it is that I'm a fabriholic and am just collecting it for my stash!

She is clearly not dogging on 50-somethings as a group. Just sharing her experience which a lot of us can relate to. Lighten up!
She could have just as easily said, "for all of you snotty 30-somethings". I wouldn't have been offended because I'm not snotty...unless I have a cold, of course.
It's so easy to hide behind an anonymous comment and sling zingers at someone you don't know. I know The Nester for real and her heart is good as gold. For real.

I've bought most of my fabric at thrift stores (like the bed skirt I will be using for kitchen valances soon), yard sales and Walmart (I live far, far from anything "upscale") and none of those people seem to care what I'm doing with it as long as I'm buying it and getting out of the way!
what a rude thing to say...I was not "hiding behind an anonymous comment and slinging zingers" or whatever. I am also one of those who does not have a blog or know how to make an identity and therefore the only option below is anonymous..not what i prefer, but all that is offered. I do not know any other way. And it is not easy to stand up for oneself, but it is easy to make the error of grouping all people together. I would guess that many "posh 50 somethings" are ones who buy tassels..and things from all who sell online.
One of these days when you are '50-something and not quite pretty' -- the time will come much faster than you expected -- I'll call you from the Home and we'll laugh about this.
Try buying 12 yds of burlap...and see the looks you get...AND try explaining what you are using it for. cherry

When I go to somewhere like Hancock's or Hobby Lobby, I don't get the grill. I think they could care less what I am going to do with it. But when I go somewhere like a decorator fabric store, yes, they are kind of snooty about their fabrics. So, I mostly avoid those places.
I love it....you should have been in the isle at Home Depot a few years ago when I told him I was going to hang the "drop cloths" as drapes. He judged me for sure and looked at me like I was nuts...guess what...he's right...I am...thank goodness!

I work as a decorator for a design firm and the owner would fall.over.dead. at some of the things I've done to our home. ON MY OWN. And I've done it for a FRACTION of the price. She would just DIE...but when she sees the finished result she's always in love. I just don't tell her how I get there. ;)

I just had to add that two years ago with a few written details I learned how to do a rag style quilt. I was nervous and went to a fabric (quilting) store and spent $125 on fabric that they told me was completely better quality than I could get at Walmart, Joann's, etc. That was the fabric I used to "save money and make my MIL a Christmas gift (quilt)". BOY did I learn a lesson! I have now made a baby blanket from online tutorials and Hobby Lobby fabric, two quilts, hemmed a skirt and I am well on my way...about to embark on revamping my bedroom and it is all thanks to getting a confidence boost and reading blogs like yours!!!
Speaking of which, could I get your opinion? I have a black bed frame and wanted to go with warm colors in my bedroom but my accents are all silver and expensive items I prefer not to paint. Should I go with more gray colors to blend or will the taupes and browns work okay? I need some help deciding since I can't get a new bed anytime soon!
