Playroom Mistreatments

After making the canvas wall in our playroom, I had lots of fabric scraps left over and I temporarily hung them up above the window to see what fabric I liked best for a mistreatment. I really wanted to do an awning type mistreatment and even bought some wood to try to make something real cheap and Nest it all up.

My mom stopped by and said how much she liked the idea I had for the windows. I didn't know what she was talking about so I ran into the room to see what my idea could possibly have been. Yes. Those scraps that are hanging there were my big idea. I was all "Mom, I'm so sure." Or something really mature like that.

A few days later my friend Betsy {there she is with her cutie husband, Mitch} came for a quick visit. Betsy is a real live designer with papers and a beautiful house to prove it. She poked her pretty little head in that playroom and I told her my elaborate plans for an awning for the window. Lo and behold, she said "I really like what you've done so far, why don't you just finish that?"

Well, for some reason that sounded so much more convincing coming from Betsy. I decided to try it and this is what I came up with. Poor Mom, she's had to deal with my dismissals my whole life! Oh, and here's the canvas wall. I still need at least 2 more--I'll be getting those tomorrow because Michael's finally put a coupon in the paper. I HATE posting things that are half done but I am so impatient! It's such a great compliment to the mistreatments!

I had lots of scraps left over from the canvases/canvi? so I folded them to be rectangular. I didn't cut them or anything. I hate cutting fabric, it's such a commitment so, I just clipped and tacked. I even threw in a few square pillow cases that I had laying around. It has lots of personality and I love the different lengths and texture.

This is a great idea for a playroom and would also be cute in a laundry room, kitchen or nursery. I could see dish towels, pretty burp cloths, or even real pillow cases hung up like this! What about team pennants for a boy's room? Or, like me just use leftover fabric. Do you have an idea of what else could work?

It's the perfect treatment for a boy's playroom. Did your boys have any comments on it?

With my youngest daughter every time I try to do something with her room she always balks and doesn't like it. Drives me crazy! It's a control thing I'm sure. Soon she will want to be like her big sister and start putting posters of bands and the like on her walls...that's when I just keep the door shut!

Well you did it again! Looks beautifull, the colors and textures go so well together. It definitely has the Nesters touch. I think it is a great combination of a manly windowmistreatment with a very feminine touch. I bet your boys love it. I sure do!
Greetings Marianne

i've seen vintage slips hung on a curtain rod through the shoulder straps all bunched together - surprisingly cute.

I just love this, I can see it done in a nursery with favorite outgrown outfits or with pretty receiving blankets.

I have a lot of dish towels from my husbands grandmother that she embroidered. We use them everyday but I'm thinking of stashing away a few of his favorites, your canvases have given me a sweet idea for displaying them.

How about pretty baby bloomers or diaper covers, for a little girl's nursery??

What about neckties?? That's cute for a boy's room!

And old flags??

And pieces of vintage table cloths or quilts!

What about the bottoms of gorgeous camisoles? Especially the ones that have lace on the hem1

I'm scaring myself with all the possibilties!

And I love the warm browns and oranges in your window hanging, looks so welcoming and gorgeous!

As I've mentioned before, I hate matchey matchey....so that look suits me. I won't tell anyone, but the fabric fifth from the left is in my kitchen as we speak...or at least it looks exactly like it. Oh and tell your friend her coat/jacket is gorgeous. Oh and I saw what Darcy is working on for you ;)

You have done it again. What whimsy. Every idea was born from someone thinking outside the box. I think this look coud catch on in many different ways; dresses, towels, ribbons, placemats, dried flowers/herbs. It is endless as long as you have nails and rings. Thanks for posting this clever mistreatment. One more for the book I am waiting for.

My son has pom pons (the kind you get free at games, you know, with the stick?) as his mistreatment in his room...Memphis Tigers blue, white, and gray. We just stuck them up there one day to get them out of the way since he COULDN'T part with one of them, and it's perfect for his Tigers room. GO TIGERS! :)

I just shake my head in wonder....How do you throw random peices of fabric at a window and end up with art? I could never do it. I am awed.

Duh...Aprons!! :-)

I have seen little girls dresses used as a valance too-very sweet!

See? You are a decorating genius without even thinking!

I did a treatment similar to this one once with cloth placemats. I just folded the top over about 1/4 of the way down, put a couple stitches in, and slipped a row of them on a rod. But if we're seriously mistreating--then just clip and go, right :)?! I love the way it looks too! What a fun playroom!

And yes, I know what else will work...I have saved EVERY Lilly Pulitzer dress my girls have ever had and I plan on using those in our beach house when we rebuild!

Girlfriend you make me so jealous. I love the unconscious genius.
I keep feeling really inspired by you and ambitious and go to the fabric store and instantly feel like a deflated balloon--I have bad luck at fabric stores. Remember my kitchen window mistreatment malfunction?
I so wish you lived in my town and could help me figure out what to do with all my retardededly-shaped, blind-lacking windows.

I gave you a little shout out on my post tonight....

The bottom left square of the canvas wall..... How do you make that memo board? I want to make a memo board like that for my daughter's bedroom.

I know this is probably a stupid question for you. But for an especially uncrafty person like myself.... the answer is not so obvious.

I just did this in my dining room/school room with placemats. I didn't sew them - what if I want to use them? But used your trick of upholstery nails.

I've also folded napkins in triangles for kitchen door windows lots of times.

When you rent, you decorate so you can take it with you!

i did this in my Landry Kate's room and used vintage hankies...I also used them on her crib as a bedskirt. i am not a pepto pink girl mom...so these worked perfectly.

I love this idea. But I have no fabric. My kids could use some curtains so maybe when I think of ideas of what I can use then I might attempt in the mis-treatment,lol!

I love the room with that color pallet. Well have to go and reboot laundry.

Oh my gosh!!! I LOVE THIS! You've done it again. You have the best ideas, girl. I just love that everything you seem to come up with can be done with out spending a boatload of $. It is refreshing.

I just changed out my dining room centerpiece with candles.....thanks to your candle post on BD.....I also went to JoAnn's yesterday and got a bunch of cute fabric remnants for CHEAP to do my own "canvas wall." I can't thank you enough.

In the words of Tony the Tiger, that's "Grrrrreat!" Is this the only window in the room?

Here's my idea (I didn't read all the above comments, so maybe someone has said this already)... I have trouble parting with my children's baby clothes, so you could use them somehow. Of course, little girls dresses would be perfect, but you could do it with boys clothes too. I'm thinking little plaid shirts, blue jeans, etc. You'd have to either cut or fold them to work though.

Really fun!!! I do love that fabric you had in there before too!!

Now I just hate you.

Does anyone else think that having to put in the letters you see above the box to post a comment is too much like a test? I get it wrong a lot of times. Why do the letters have to be so funky?

Goodness this is creative!!! What do I owe you LOL?

Sports pennants could work for a girl, too! Let's not start drawing gender lines in kids' decor!

I love this idea! Brilliant!

I once did something similar with napkins and placemats. It's all just fabric...right?!

I really like these. I only wish my playroom didnt have so many flippin windows in it. Hmmm, I may need to take a picture of the windows and send to you to see what you can come up with.

I am a teacher and I have a western theme for my room this year. I took red and blue bandanas, folded them into triangles and stapled at the top of the windows with the point down, and alternating the red and blue. The windows are small squares so one fits perfectly with just a little extra fabric on the side. And since it's a classroom, we staple everything to the wall, so the staples were the obvious choice!

Socks in a laundry room! That is on my to do list! Here's my plan. Put hooks or knobs on the wall, number depends on how wide the window is. Tie thick string on it like a clothes hanger. Then take old fashioned wooden clothes hangers and clip on tons of cute socks to make a valance!!! I have collected socks but haven't had time to do this yet. If it's a big window, you could do this on the top and then do a cafe type valance with fabric on the bottom (buy them from Martha Stewart at KMart) and then hand sew on more socks all over them!!! It's SO SO SO cute! Love your blog!

My mom did something similar in her kitchen with kitchen towels. It was WAY cute! (so is yours!!)

I love that, Nester~! I think it is just as chic as those silly designers we talk about...I think it's a good way to get alot of color in without spending a dime....

who'd a thunk? Maybe I should try that in my sewing room! That would get some of my fabric off the cutting table, sewing table and floor! Just hang'em at the window! Like I said, who'd a thunk?

You make it sound so easy...

It does look good!! (2 exclamation points worth ;-)

I took various colors of felt squares, cut a point in one end, sewed a piece of neutral colored ribbon across the top and threaded it onto a (blush) dollar store white metal rod....made the cutest "penant" type valance for DS's room!

I think I fell into an alien universe. Y'all (you and your commenters) are *so* creative, my goodness!!! I keep my windows clean because I love the views. Window treatments (or mistreatments)? Uh...?

I'm bookmarking your blog so I can delve into more of this lovely craziness. Will you kick me out if my only talent is in reading about what you all make?
