Fancy Mistreatment

I was packing my magazine collection the other day and saw the photo above. Yes, It's a bad, bad thing that I cannot throw away any of my Southern Livings--great recipes, great gardens and of course, great house ideas. But I'm so glad because I ran across this fun idea to make a sideboard out of wood and fabric.

If you're like me you are not gonna go buy wood but a few years ago, I turned an old particle board cheap shelf on it's side and it was a good height for a sofa table. I got out my upholstery tacks and fabric, made some pleats and it turned out really cute. Look, they even fabriced the top! It's like a mistreatment for a table. What else could we mistreat? Tables, shelves, cabinets--remember this project?

Oh, and Meredith never ceases to amaze me check out this and this.

I love that idea but it will have to wait until the little ones are a little less destructive. They love wrapping themselves in hanging fabric and would have those glasses shattered in a minute :)

I heart Southern Living too

Question... You were packing magazines but "saw this photo"... so were you REALLY packing or did someone get a little side tracked? Sounds like me "packing" but really sitting with a glass of tea looking through my old magazines- because it is like Deadliest Catch and is addicting:)

Hope all is going well and smoothly for your move. I am just joking above, don't hate me.

I need one of those in every room of my house. And I still haven't unpacked my very heavy box of Real Simples and Southern Livings. Can't wait for that day.

Southerner--you totally busted me! I have about 5 other pages dogeared in other magazines that I was busy packing.

cute idea! I am thinking of doing something like that on those cheap stackable basket things (where they are open in the front)...anyways I am going to get my sweet husband to cut a wood top for it, and mistreat it...it will go in the corner of my sewing (I mean dining) room to store all my fabric!

Nester, you know what I do.. I pull out only the pages that I adore. That way I end up with a much smaller pile. Well not really, it's hard to pitch a good idea. Lets just say I pull out those darn cards in the middle and the advertisments. Happy packing, Susie H

Loved that idea...but pretty much love all your ideas. I was searching your archives for wall paint ideas. I know you use Tobacco Road, but what brand is that? I need to find an equivalant color at Lowe's. Also I have dark stained early 90's trim. Any suggestions on paint colors?
Thanks,
Karen

My problem as been that I have been using older catalogs like Pottery Barn and will come across pictures that will make me open sealed boxes to find fabric, etc., that could possibly be used for decorating projects. There has just got to be a support group for this sort of thing!! And then we could all help each other to decorate - LOL!!

You just Rock Nester....love the bookcase on it's side idea. I wish I come up with this stuff on my own.

Once again, I bow down to Queen Nester.

One year my husband threw out probably 50 of my Southern Living Magazines without asking me first...I was mad at him for two days! He just couldn't understand why getting rid of a bunch of magazines would make me that upset. I told him for one thing those magazines are dang expensive! And that I was going to go through each of them and pull out the articles and recipes I wanted. He still didn't understand. I remember seeing this project and wanting to do the same thing with a small table I have that needs some love.

Great idea! I have a bedroom night stand that needs a tremendous amount of help and I think that this would do it!

One thing though... You were packing and just stumbled on this!? Missy... you must take A LONG time to pack! LOL

Well, I'm glad you did!

I'm so glad I'm not the only magazine junkie out there! I just hate to get rid of them. You never know when an old idea suddenly applies....

Oh I remember that article! Two years I went thru all my SL's and cut out my keeper articles. Then I made dividers from scrap paper with tabs on top and filed the cut out pages in a magazine holder in my home office closet. I still miss the books though but sadly just couldn't keep the stacks any longer - must have room for fabric stash! lol

BTW - you would be so proud of my latest mistreatment for my living room curtains. Now I've moved on to the dining room curtains and my fingers are to the bone from all the sewing... I know you wouldn't sew them but I have to use my machine once in a while to justify it's expense, lol

Don't work too hard moving boxes, remember those breaks you take to look thru your magazines is a benefit to us all since you post inspiration for us! Really you could say your break is a community service! LOL How's that for a rationalized excuse? LOL

Once again, sisters separated at birth. I am a magazine hoarder!!! I can't throw away Southern Living or Cottage Living. Love them both...in additon to kitchen/bath magazines, outdoor decor...basically any of those specialty decor mags. People HATE to move us- especially when they pick up those boxes of magazines. We've done three moves in three years. I'm with you girl!! I start the packing by going through things and being very organized. My ADD gets me sidetracked at looking through photos, mags, craft junk... then I end up chucking everything into boxes because I run out of time. Thank goodness for a basement this time around to store our boxes until I can go through all of them. Moving = No fun Decorating new nest = Much fun!!! I will be thinking of you this weekend, feeling sorry for you, but knowing that you will have lots of fun decorating once you get there!!!

I did a similair project with a press board ugly book case I used contrasting fabric on the top and then the side and front matched with piping out of the top fabric, Since it was a bookcase I needed to get into I made it go up like a roman shade. It was a great way to store books and all my magazines.

I have taken to just making cut sheets of ideas I like out of mag and tossing the rest of it. I have a binder with clear plastic thingies..you know like For a report but the name escapes me! LOL
I have all kinds of ideas in there. I live in a old 1950 ranch that we have expended to every space under the roof line so no storage here for volumes of magazines. I do keep my real simple's for at least 3 months...love them!

Oh my gosh! I have that article! You've got some old magazines, girl! I've been hoarding that one for quite some time (at least three moves now!)

Great ideas! Wish I could get over my anxiety with fabric. It's like stage fright. I'm all set to pick something out and then I see the rows and rows of fabric and I panic. And get a little sweaty. It's just not right...

OK ladies, I too save pictures from magazines I love. There was this one home in particular that I just loved everything about it. I have had that magazine 4 years & try to imitate it when I can. Well, a couple of months ago a lady was in my home decor store & as we were talking I began to describe that home from the mag. Turns out to be her home!!! I just about fell over & she laughed when I told her about the magazine & how I try to imitate her. It was a double pleasure for me, I got to meet her & she is a great customer now too.

bella--let me promote me and my big self--if you scroll down a few posts from the one you linked to, you will see that they featured little ol me and the secret reading room we talked about. Um, what were you saying again, i got all caught up in myself...oh, yeah, fabric on cabs--i would have never thought of that!

Oh, that is cool!

And you did think of it, lol...you mentioned it in your blog...and I had just bookmarked her site the other day, so I just wanted to post it for you, since you mentioned it (fabric on cabinets).

I just hauled a round table out of my basement, topped it with a tablecloth and added accessories...I got the idea from your site, your tables are so beautiful. I really love it...thank you so much for sharing so many ideas with us!!!

Hey there Nestah! I love a skirted table. Very cute. Actually, more elegant than cute. I have magazine throwing away issues too.

I have an award for you over at my place. I won't feel bad if you don't do anything with it, I just wanted you to know you're appreciated.

That is a totally cool idea. One day I am gonna have time to do all this stuff.

Oh no. You've just given me an idea for another project, Nester. Darn it! I keep telling myself no more yard sale shopping until I finish the projects that are already on my list. At this rate I will never yard sale shop again. It's a tragedy! :)

Hey Nester...happy moving to you!!! And, when you get a chance, I wanted to beg you to stop by this post on my blog (http://mytwosons-kelley.blogspot.com/2008/05/kellys-korner-idea.html) and see if you had any great ideas for Mistreatments here.

Thanks,

Gorgeous!

I'm the same way with my Coastal Living magazines. They're too beautiful and useful to throw out.

Okay Nester, how do you do it? You should be packing and moving, but instead you're looking through magazines and visiting blogs. Thanks for the nice comment!
So, do you have movers or just a lot of family and friends?!?

Stephanie said...

Well you can't JUST pack, you need a break right? And we all need your great ideas, so I am in total support of you looking through some great magazines. Is that being selfish?

Meredith said...

good luck with the packing--it would be horrible if you didn't get to take an inspiration break here and there!

Thanks for the link--you didn't have to do that!

Can you post the directions or at least tell me what issue of SL it is...Love it. And, between you, your sister and my 8 year old daughter, the Tobacco Road is going up in all it's glory all over my house this week. Can't wait.

I am having a little drawing on my blog and someone sent me your way! The prize is ribbon and I am asking for ideas of different ways I can use my stash! Someone recommended your little ragamuffin garland and I HAD to come check it out! Your blog looks so fun! You definitely have a talent! I'll be back when I have more time to browse!!

Miss Nester,
I'm almost afraid to ask, but do you know what edition of Southern Living the skirted table idea is in? I would love to contact them for a back issue.
My magazine collection is legendary! In fact, when we moved I took my boxes of magazines with me in my car so I would know exactly where they are at all times! My collection includes Victoria, Home Companion, and every Martha Stewart Weddings magazine ever published.
What's a woman to do?? :-D
Thank you, and happy new home!

You are too funny! I have really enjoyed your blogs and have been admiring them "from afar". I, too, have a difficult time throwing away my Southern Livings. If I have thrown them away, you can bet your bottom dollar that I've been through every page and torn out any recipes or party ideas and stashed them in a file somewhere. (how do you like that run-on?) Do you have any "easy" ways to do decorative pillows?

I love this idea! But how could I do it myself?

Love this idea, and I am very similar. I actually have a very "fatal" stack of magazines next to my bed that I know is going to fall over one day and smother me while I am sleeping..Southern Livings, County Living, County Home,Romantic Living..I know, it's an illness..
