Well, Kimba, I did get my camera cord in the mail yesterday thankyouverymuch but, I already had this post in the works and wanted to see what y'all think about this. I got an email the other day from Sara and she wanted help with some mistreatments. She sent me these photos of her lovely, inviting home and said that I could share them with you all and enlist your help.
Here's what she had to say...
Dear Nester... {this is me leaving out all the fine, fine compliments as to how beautiful I am and practically perfect in every way to the extent of rivaling Mary Poppins.} My one main goal all summer has been to do mistreatments for my new home in the living room/kitchen. However, my dilema {I can never spell that word} is.......... I can't pick a fabric!

You are so talented {well, I'm sure she meant to make it larger in her email and just forgot so I thought I would add it in} and I am sure with one look you could tell me. Aw shucks. I have a hunch that this great room is dying for some color and that a certain fabric might help. So, I am wondering........do you have any idea what might look good in this room???? I love all of the fabric that you use. Double shucks. Could you suggest one that you have used? I just don't have an "eye" for things like this:)

Y'all, won't it be fun if we all pitch in and help Sara together?! Do you have a favorite fabric that you have used or an idea that she might like? When I emailed her for permission to use these photos she said advice in any area was welcome. This room looks 95% done to me and she is so right that fabric will really soften it up! Maybe if this goes well we can do this from time to time. But don't go sending me a zillion photos just yet, I'll have to set up a separate email first. So, what would you do if you were Sara? What kind of fabric would you be looking for?

She has a lot of solids going on, so the fabric needs to definitely have some pattern in it. Paisley is always a good match for this Pottery Barn type of decor.
I think the room is beautiful. Perhaps some fabric that has a bright pattern - something with a little punch.
I vote for plaids/stripes/and/or floral. But also important is where she wants the focus. Does she want to highlight the 3 small high windows? If not, she may want to give the illusion that they are 3 long windows by hanging rod high and using a valence OVER (not covering) them, then another rod over lower set that will cover the lower windows. (This IS hard writing insructions when you can't use hands motions!) That is unless she wants to open them to let light in, then it would look dumb. What is on the other side of the windows? backyard patio?
OK I am spent. Can't think clearly any longer.....
You can never go wrong with a cream and khaki brown buffalo check (oversize, simple check--lady at the fabric store would probably be able to identify it). It looks fabulous with everything and transcends every style. I think Waverly still makes it. They have a website that's easy to search by pattern and color, and then where to go to buy or order it.
Good luck!!!
I would do something that really stands out in the dining area to make it the main focus. Something with a gorgeous pattern that looks expensive and foreign-but somehow isn't:)
By the fireplace I would do something a bit more subdued because that fireplace demands alot of attention and I wouldn't want people not to know what to look at first.
Im with Jennifer, Brown and creme check...big or small. She already has a paisley chair by the window so it cant be too busy right??? I feel so silly giving any advice to the Nester! Serious!!!
I think she needs some deep crimson red with that butter yellow in some type of pattern to tie it in.
First can I say, Sara your house is beautiful! Love your paint color too.
I agree, you need some color. Rusts, greens, burgundys. or even brown. Personally, I love Buffalo Check patterns, but maybe even a thick stripe or if you want something more feminine a paisley or toille. I'd go with a silk fabric...it'll give you that classy designer look. I suggest getting one yard of 2 or 3 different fabrics you like and hanging them on the wall to see which one pops.
I'd also do a valance to tie the 3 windows together in the dining room, but in the family room you definitely want to showcase those beautiful transom windows. Not sure how, but lucky you...I'm sure the Nester will help you out. :)
I think a pattern is necessary-I actually had in mind something like the chair and then I saw the chair. Also, I would hang sheers or something similar to get rid of the mini-blinds. I'm on an anti-miniblind crusade (unless you absolutely need the privacy). I think they make a house look rented and not lived in. I know-its a personal problem.
I'm thinking crimson in both rooms since they are visible together. I personally love dupioni silk. The sheen on that really adds light to the room.
When I first read this post I immediately thought, "she needs some brown/khaki check (like Jennifer said) and some creme/brown toille. Perhaps curtains (all the way to the floor :) of toille and a (puffed -- like you did in Emily's old kitchen) valance of check. I'm still trying to visualize that look but something with those fabrics... I can't wait to see what you decide on :)
i'm voting for a big buffalo check...something that will pick up her color on her walls AND add some additional color in the room as well. as far as what kind? ... drapes! they are oh so poplular and beautiful and you just can't go wrong! i would hang them below the smaller windows too!
I'm thinking texture more than pattern...even a solid with a tone on tone texture rather than a pattern like floral or stripe.
and I'm with lacy! crazy to be OFFERING advice on nester's site!
I think a large plaid in a warm red or rust color would look great (colors are hard to tell on a monitor, so I'm not sure about the red or rust).
Beautiful room!
tina
I'm thinking she needs to bring in some of the red from the fireplace so that the room feels more unified. Maybe a really pretty buffalo plaid in a red, gold and brown. But not too bright. A nice dupioni silk would bring some drama and elegance to the room. For the kitchen she could use the same fabric as part of valance with a little bit of toile.
You won't find any fabric advise from moi, but did I tell you that I prayed for your mailman yesterday. Ah - the Lord always answers prayer.:)
I say HANG 'EM HIGH!
I'd hang 1 rod, about 2 inches from the ceiling, treating the whole group of windows as 1 window.
More dramatic and really emphasizes the great ceiling height she has. You don't want it to look all chopped up.
And a strong color with contrast from the wall color will add to the effort of drawing the eye up.
Like a dark brick red maybe, and I agree with the paisley or stripe choices. Smashing!
Great room, by the way!
I think this one would look nice:
http://waverly.com/products_information.php?id=648462%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20&productType=1
Oh what fun!!! The first thing that popped in my mind was color and pattern since she does have many solids already. I would go for something similar to the nesters big honkin gorgeous toile couch!!! Love that couch. I think I dream about it once a week :)
I personally am not a fan of the little windows above so I would hang the curtains high taking the emphasis off of them but that is just me.
Gorgeous room and house just DONT be afraid of color!!!
Yay! I love this game! Sara, your house is gorgeous and looks very comfortable and cozy. I would suggest definitely doing some sort of dramatic panel in a stripe, plaid, or solid to emphasize those great windows. The chair has paisley on it, which is a statement in and of itself. You don't want to get too busy on the pattern with the mistreatments because it would fight with the fireplace and the paisley, so I would keep it relatively simple. I would also find a pattern that has some of your current colors; browns, beiges, reds, golds, but I would find one that has a blue or green in it as a punch of color. You have lots of warm tones, why not bring in some cool ones?
Then, in your dining area, I would find a similar pattern to your family room, but instead, I would choose a print with more of the sage green or sea blue (similar color to that greenish piece you have on top of your hutch by the table) with accents of the golds/reds/tans to tie into the family room. That way, you keep things relatively consistent and flowing since your rooms are open to each other. You want them to relate, but not necessarily match. Does this make any sense? As I read it back, I am confusing myself.
Anyway, your windows are gorgeous, so I really don't think you could go wrong!
Oh, Nester, you are sooo much better at this than I but here are my thoughts. I love those little windows so I would leave them bare. Then I woul do one of your fold and poof treatments on the big windows in a nice bold print. One that had all the deep hues going on in the room. Does that make sense? I know I can't wait to do one of the fold and poof mistreatments, so I am sure there are others out there just chomping at the bit.....
Blessings~~
Beautiful house, Sara. I think a floral with a deep crimson red background would be pretty. It would be nice to do panels on the fam room windows but leave the transoms uncovered. (Start the panels in the middle...) Can't wait to see what you get!
Is this a trick question? We aren't going to get a big "WRONG!" in tomorrow's post are we? :o)
I must have issues with my monitor...because the pictures were so dark I couldn't see much but the windows! With all this talented help, I'm sure she'll find what she's looking for.
Can you make sure she sends the "after" pictures when she's done?
This is like my idea from the other day. I think it would be best to just have the people upload there OWN pictures on their own blog and you just link them.
I wish I had a better eye for this stuff so I could help.
Can not wait to read what people suggest.
Not that I have any business leaving a comment here like I know what I'm talking about, but I think a red toile would be really pretty. Would that be tobacco road on the walls?
Hurry up and decide so some of the rest of us can just copy the idea!
I always pull colors for my rooms from something that gives me inspiration that is already in the room that makes a statement. In her case it looks like the picture over her fireplace should guide her in her color scheme. She should pick out two coordinating fabrics that work well together and put one in the family room hung as panels between the windows with the rod hung between the small windows and the larger windows. The other fabric could be hung as panels in her kitchen. The reason I suggest panels instead of a valance is because it doesn't appear in the photos that her windows have a wood casing around them. Therefore, she should use fabric to hide the sheetrock casing that is currently there. She could then use the same fabrics that she has chosen to coordinate with pillows on the sofa and linens on her table. Maybe alternate the patterns in each room so they tie all together. She could take a photo of her picture to the fabric store to go off of to pick her colors.
Kelly
Well, isn't this fun?
I have a few tidbits to add so here goes....
I'd do long (from up near the ceiling to the floor) "dummy" panels in the Great Room. In the breakfast nook, I'd do more of a top treatment (also hanging high). As far as fabric, I'm thinking something "light" (literally weight wise); maybe a silk or silk-look and, yes, with lots of color/interest. I have seen some great ones that are LARGE blocks of color. In the "nook", I'd be inclined to find a coordinate to the Great Room fabric...something with the same colors but a different pattern.
LOL..after reading every single comment and even leaving one myself already I just realized the poor girl is going to be MORE confused than ever..lol
Several have said big plaid though but there are TONS of different answers. The nester will have to come in and pull it all together and hopefully pick my great idea (yeah right..lol)
I've not read all the comments previous to mine...maybe someone will have already said this. I've heard that you should consider what is "outside" your windows when choosing your fabric for the inside. A pattern or color that draws attention will not let your eyes go through the window...something to consider if there is something outside that is worth seeing. If you have a beautiful lake to look at, or nice landscaping...you might choose something more neutral/in line with the wall color so you are able to focus on the beauty outdoors, and not just the fabric of the window treatment! I might be wrong...I'm NOT the Nester!! Hee Hee! But, I have found it to be helpful in my own home. I did immediately think "paisley and stripes"...then realized that the chairs in living room may have a paisley print in them, that may have influenced my first thought.. Good luck...can't wait to see the "after" photos!!
Just for the heck of it, since I'm NO decorator... I'll say this for the living room..
http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp?CATID=cat893850&PRODID=xprd560924
And this for the dining...
http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp?CATID=cat893850&PRODID=xprd560897
or something like that. ;)
Toile or paisley, damask, only because these are my all time favorite patterns! With lot's of color.
This is where I'd have trouble too. I'd say a dark red fabric with more of an orange than purple tone. But that's our color scheme here and I'm getting tired of looking at it!! I'd use a subtle small print.
Ok putting my two cents in -- I think she needs some pattern her chair that has a pattern seems to have red and golds -- So she needs to introduce some pattern in the drapes . Her large picture has a romantic look -- so a subdued floral or even a paisley style as others suggest - also a little bling on the mantel with brass etc candlesticks and books and greenery on the other side -- Then a runner in red on the table to spread that color and throw pillows of same curtain material -- and then some solid red and add some green also and pull these colors into the kitchen also for continuity -- Kathy - GA
Lucky...getting help from the Nester. Hate you Sara. :-)
Great room, though. Fabulous, enviable windows! I'm thinking she leans towards the Tuscan style. Color for the treatments should come from the picture over the fireplace, right?
Definitely need a rich, deep, solid color in the living area and some valances only (in coordinating colors, with pattern) in the dining area.
Also, whatever (mis)treatments are chosen, definitely need to add fringe of some sort. Curtains, valances, roman shades, etc. look totally professionally done with some fat fringe...bought with a coupon from Hobby Lobby, of course! :-)
Mistreat away, Sara! Have fun with it! Can't wait to see an after photo!
I'm seeing red. Beautiful red fabric. Maybe a paisley design. She has a gorgeous home.
Oh fun! I love the site and love stuff like this. Ummm...yeah, there needs to be a *pop* to the room. Something fun and pretty to make it really stand out.
I have loved reading the replies!
I would go with a LARGE check (the blocks being several inches)...something with red or cranberry along with green and brown and a neutral color that will compliment your wall and patterned chair color. I would use the same fabric in both rooms. The treatment doesn't have to be the same in both rooms but I would probably use the same fabric in order to unify the rooms. I would also purchase two or three fabrics that compliment the check fabric for pillows for your couch and chair.
OR
From what I can see, the main patterned piece in your room is the chair. Maybe look at the colors in that pattern. It is difficult for us to see the colors in that chair from the photos. You could pick a large check fabric with colors that compliment that chair.
I will leave the TYPE of window treatment up to Nester. LOL.
I love the paint color! I vote for a pattern, as well. Something with a deep red or mossy green, maybe?

I agree the room is 95% done and just some pattern and color will add that 5%. Depending on her style, checked, plaid, floral etc.We all are usually drawn to certain colors. Here are some ideas:
Check:
http://www.housefabric.com/ProductDetail.asp?ProductID=16522
Floral:
http://www.housefabric.com/ProductDetail.asp?ProductID=8473
other:
http://www.housefabric.com/ProductDetail.asp?ProductID=18416
I would do two fabrics that go together for the kitchen and family room. I usually take a paint chip Joanne;s and existing throw pillow and walk the fabric aisles. Good luck!
I'm thinking a very busy floral in muted tones to do that puffy thing over the top little windows, then a less busy print (maybe a coordinating stripe?) to hang as panels over/to the sides of the long windows... oh, and the panels need some fringe. They need to be fringed up real good.
Everything seems to already be brown shades so I think long, puddled at the floor printed red color would be wonderful, giving the room a nice punch of color.
I would say a faux silk plaid (or real silk - but if she has kids a faux might work better b/c you can clean it, unlike silk).
Maybe she could do 4 mistreatments (panels) a little above the higher windows down to the floor - on the outsides of the window bank, and then between them also. She could hang them with The Nester's genius ring thingies.
I'm sorry I don't have any advise, but it looks like the other readers have things under control in that area. I just wanted to say that I LOVE your blog and have mistreated all the windows in my house. Thanks for such great tutorials and ideas! I have quite a mistreatment dilemma at my house and would love some advise of my own if you ever get the time. We turned half of our utility room/laundry room into a little nook for the baby to sleep. I am not much of a decorator, but it is coming along slowly but surely. I'm looking for ideas on how to make it seem like there are 2 separate rooms. I won't bombard you with pics, but if you end up doing something like this occasionally I'd love the help.
I probably agree with some dummy panels of a lighter fabric...as in colors...to brighten some of the darker features of the great furniture. I also think the decorative item above the fireplace mantle should be lighter in color so as not to fade into the brick...maybe a picture double or triple matted with a cream or taupe color for the top matting.
I'm not great with fabrics. I usually try to get mine in with pillows. I love pillows! But I agree with several of the other posts about the 3 smaller windows. Cover those up! Hang your curtains high so it looks like 3 tall windows. Good Luck! You definitely went to the right person for help!
You might consider a big floral like Waverly's Ballad Bouquet in Sepia. It is a gorgeous linen with a nice hand - it drape beautifully and it has lots of colors in it - chocolate brown, cream, soft gold, a bit of robin's egg blue and three shades of rose. Quite lovely in many rooms! Online the fabric swatching never properly portrays the richness of this fabric, but trust me - 'live and in person' it is really stunning! There is a nice stripe co-ordinate too!
Okay Can O worms opened you are going to have to start a new blog just to help people with ideas! LOL
I have these windows I am not sure what to do with too! They would be a real challenge low ceiling less than 8 foot on that end of the room. 4 four foot windows all in a row...with white wood blinds....do you hear them crying for help!

Glad that you got the camera cord! ;-)
That is a beautiful room! Love the high ceilings and the transom windows. Beautiful!
If I weren't brain dead from packing, I'd probably have some ideas. But now? Not much.
I think I would like a soft pattern in the family room so that it doesn't compete with the fireplace. Then something a little bolder in the dining area.
Okay, here goes. The large picture above the fireplace gives a clue to the style of the room. It looks kind of French, or romantic. So a subdued print in a color from the picture would be nice. A pretty red with a subtle design with a coordinating print to tie in the two rooms would be gorgeous! I agree that hanging the rods high would be best, it would draw your eye up to the high ceilings. Otherwise there could be an awkward height difference between the living room drapes and the dining area window treatment.
What a beautiful home. Congratulations!
P.S. You could balance the room and cozy it up with some pillows in the red fabric from the drapes and other pillows with red on your beautiful leather furniture. Maybe even paint a small piece of furniture the same color of red as an accent?
For the Family Room:
I vote for a dark, heavy rod between the transom windows and the ones below, with a panel on each side in a bold red/brown check.
OR
Same idea with the rod, but have a 30" wide panel between each window and on each end.
For the Kitchen:
If those are mini blinds (couldn't tell by the picture) get rid of them. Cafe' curtains hung at 1/2 way or 2/3 up the window would be adorable in a fun, large print in your favorite colors.
OR, you could buy the window treatments I have for sale. Hehe!
We have similar sized windows with a glass door in the middle and transom windows on top. If this is the room where you watch television, be sure you take glare from those transoms into account. I wanted to use cheater panels but had to hang higher than the transoms and have drapes that actually would close due to glare on the TV screen -- which drove my husband crazy.
She has a beautiful painting hanging above her fireplace--maybe bring some of those colors into the room. Seeing the kids toys around, I would suggest using a print to help hide any sticky fingers that want to touch the pretty curtains. maybe a darker print with a added gold trim piece. maybe acent with some throw pillows in a solid color to bring the look together.
I've read that every room needs 5 elements to make it good and balanced. A solid (which she has plenty of), a plaid or check, a print, texture (brick), and a stripe. It looks to me like she has a French country like theme going. I'd say a red/yellow toile to balance the strong yellow (?) (that's what color it looks like on my monitor) with a band of check. You could steam a seam the band if you don't sew or there's always the hot glue gun. Our local fabric stores have swatches (small pieces of fabric)that they let you take for free. They'll even cut a piece if you ask. That way Sara can try out different fabrics to see which one or ones she likes best. Good luck. Lovely home by the way.
Reds would be very warm for the rooms. You need a pattern (floral, fruit etc). I think plaids won't be enough. I would do florr length panels in the living room with the hardware going right past the thee big windows. Panels will allow you to see all the windows. Don't cover them up!!!!!! I would use a coordinate for the kitchen.
One more thing..... I would hang a rode going across the whole length of all the windows. It would distract you from the windows and look funny. Have separate hardware on each side. My mom has done draperies her whole life for top designers....... I think I hear her talk a lot!!
WOULD NOT hang a rode across. Sorry I don't proof read my stuff.
I'm thinking some kind of stripe with that wonderful color she has on the wall. I'd go to the nearest joAnn's fabric and browse the home section. Then wait for a 40% coupon in the mail, and score!!
javascript:zoomImg('http://63.210.199.180/04/81/9/48196.jpg.fpx?qlt=80&wid=265&cvt=jpeg','/joann/shop/shop_tszoom.jsp')
See if that works!
This is so hard... there are so many options - it really just depends on the "feel" she's trying to get in the room. I looked around at JoAnns online (too dangerous to actually go in the store) and here are my first dozen thoughts...

OK, that's all from me. Except on the three living room windows I'd take the fabric above and below the window and tie them in the middle...
You guys are great.... I just kept looking at the room shaking my head. There are so many possibilities!!
Definitely hang them high. Way to the ceiling high.
Personally I would go with a flowered & stripe/plaid combination. OR a super plain panel.
Since I don't know the personality style of the "sistah" in question I am not much help. Sorry.
Hello there Nester! I have to tell you that I LOVE your site. SO MUCH fun! I do have a question for you, off the subject of what fabrics she should pick...
You mentioned wreaths in your last post and I am very new to making things. How would you make a wreath? I know this is very elementary but I am not too worried about asking a stupid question. I just want a more cozy home.
Thank you! Martha
something red or brickish and jacobean (picture a floral that almost looks paisley-ish). i also think she has a beautiful room and could use a little more texture on the brick mantle (not the mantle itself but on the "floor" of the mantle)- maybe a "snake charmer" one side - to hold blankets (one could be draping out) and some kind of tall greenery on the other. Something simple. Anyway, I love the pretty room already...
OR a silk buffalo check would be beautiful and bold as well...(I agree with what someone else said about that)
I say something rich, perhaps chocolate with some of your ideas re fabric at the bottom or sides....
On an aside, have been enjoying your blog and your sister's for ages and now have my own. One new visitor recently said that The Nester was a good blog to visit... How about that? The blogging world is small as I am in Australia and she is in the U.S.A. Not sure how we all ended up webbed together??
Beautiful room! I would pull the rust & gold out of the picture above the fireplace; maybe a damask print in rust & gold or a scrollwork with rust background & gold scrolls, that being my favorite pattern right now! Of course anything Nester suggests will be awesome! Patti
What a beautiful home. I would keep it simple with a pretty silk fabric. Not a real shiny silk, but the silk that some wedding dresses are made of..you can kind of see the stitching sometimes in it..sorry I don't know the exact type of fabric I am describing. Anyway, I think a check or plaid with a pretty creme color and tan would look beautiful. Nester, I KNOW you will come up with something fabulous! I LOVE everything you do. Thanks for always inspiring me.

Buffalo plaid with some brick red for punch, and tan/brown/beige to complement the wall color.
Ethan Allen has very pretty silk buffalo plaid. They were kind enough to humor me and give me an estimate to cover my french door sorta thing with the pretty stuff.
$$8000.00$$.
Three zeros. But it included the curtain rod. Bwahahahaha...yes, french door sorta thing is still nekkid. I need some Nester help!
All I can say is HOLY COW!! 70 amazing ideas (well, minus the few of us who refuse to comment or give any advise). How will she ever decide. Just pick her something and she'll go with it.
hi! i just stumbled on your blog, and i LOVE it! very interesting and helpful. i've added you onto my favorites list!
Wow! Look at all those comments! I hope you come back and tell Sara what to do.
Wanted to let you know that I FINALLY hung my plates on my wall...they're posted on my blog....as if you haven't seen a million pics of plates on walls already...Just wanted to say thanks for the inspiration.
I agree with the nester about the rug, both shown are gorgeous. However in lieu of adding more brown, because the furniture provides enough brown/black color, I would opt for a check or stripe in an olive or artichoke(sherwin williams #SW6179) color and some copper tones (#SW6361) to accent. The walls need something to add contrast to all that yellow and bring the eye up from the dark grounding of the furnishings. If you use a dark tone of the colors mentioned it will balance out the room, right now it is too bottom heavy and therefore you need to make the window mistreatment bold to make an impact. I would also paint the brick if it were my house but if not, then find a stripe that has the brick red tones in it with the green tones mentioned and of course hang the mistreatment high to add height to the windows as the wonderful nester has mentioned in her gorgeous blog. Best wishes, the home is beautiful as is yours Nester.
so i'm dying to know...what did sara do? this is similar to my dilemma with the transom (sp?) windows.
