We built our own sofa, and spent about $100 including the fabric to slipcover it. It's like a massive day bed, but it is perfect for the entire family to climb up on and snuggle together while watching a movie.
yeah, a Lazy Boy cranberry red leather sofa wasn't in the most popular price range, lol, but I love it :o)
ours were both under $500- one was handed down when my MIL got a new sofa- the other was from Pier 1 when they had a GREAT sale and we were newly married- it's holding up well though I'm planning on DEF. spending more on our next sofa- whenever that may be that we're in need of one...
Well, my price was for my sofa & loveseat combined - $1200 - which I was very pleased with since they are very nice leather. I also have to confess, though, that my mother-in-law bought them for me. So it was she that paid the $1200.
I got mine at "Weekends Only" Furniture store when I lived in IL. It's a red sofa with slim beige stripes by Ashley. I paid $200 for it and I LOVE it.
Have no way to answer that question. My father and his father purchased my sofa 45 years ago for my grandmother. It was reupholstered 20 years ago.....I inherited it 8 years ago....it needs reupholstered again, but still going strong.
I spent ZERO....and I have no clue what sofas cost in 1966. LOL
while we were originally going to buy leather new, I found this perfect condition, chenille 70s tufted couch at Goodwill for $60. They even had 2 matching chairs. All together we spent $100 for the set and I couldn't be happier!
We just bought new furniture. For a four piece set on clearance, we paid $798.00. Great deal for the sofa, loveseat, chair, and ottoman. I love it to. It has dark wood legs, and a nice medium tan color. I'm not a puffy sleeve kinda girl when it comes to sofa's, so I was supper excited when we found it.
Have a lovely day.
Blessings,
We bought our two love seats so long ago, I had to ask dh how much they were. Needless to say, I'm over them and want new! I think combined they were under $1,000.
Nancy
I wasn't sure how to answer the question as we have two matching sofas in the living room. Together they were about $900--so I priced them individually and chose the first option. Call me nosy, but I enjoy seeing other people's homes and hearing about how they saved money (or didn't).
My husband had all the "good" furniture when we got married 10 years ago, including the sofa. I have no idea how much it cost, but knowing how much he spent on other pieces of furniture and artwork during his bachelor days, I'd say it cost TOO MUCH. Good news is, it's stylish but not too trendy (it's been 10 years, after all), has been reupholstered once and is receiving new linen slipcovers this week!
I got mine at a Weirs Clearance center a few years back. It's a sofa and oversized chair in a neutral micro suede. I think I got them both for around $1100. They've been great, but I think my husband and I might be searching for some new furniture when we move! The back cushions have warped and its annoying!
My husband didn't want to spend a lot on a sofa, so we went with the one I didn't like, but he did, which was "less expensive". When it was delivered, we both disliked it, so it became the new basement sofa. We went back to the store and ordered the beautiful Martha Stewart/Bernhardt sofa from her Turkey Hill collection. It was expensive, but when it was delivered I knew it was the right choice. Next time DH will just trust me and go with the one I want to begin with, even if it's more expensive. It's cheaper in the long run. hehe
Hm... I'll have to ask my husband, convert from Euros, and get back to you.
When we were dating, he sold a motorcycle and used the proceeds to buy a houseful of German furniture, which is why everyone calls our house 'modern'. Really, everyone in Europe decorates with Ikea-style! It's Euro-traditional.
I think it would be fun to hear sofa stories along with those prices! Oh - let me just go read the other comments... :)
I'm thinking about your link within problem. I'll get back to you if I figure it out.
Sofas...I love them. Wish I had room for many. It's sort of a mission of mine to find sofas for friends.
I bought a beautiful, huge, white slipcovered sofa/loveseat combo from friends who were moving for $1000. I think I overpaid. That was seven years ago right after we got married.
Two small kids later, we gave away the loveseat due to downsizing, and relegated the sofa to my teenager daughter's room (she has 300 sq.ft.), and purchased an Ektorp sectional at Ikea last month. It was $899, but we received a gift card from Ikea for $150 for our purchase. Which I promptly bought a child friendly slipcover for the new sofa, not white.
Story is on my blog of course.
Strange... when I try to vote it says I have already voted in this poll. Yet, this is the first time I've been to this blog entry today. Hmmm.... Anyway, our sofa falls into the $501 - $1,000 category... purchased about 4 years ago at the Macy's Home Store in Atlanta.
Ours was FREE! But I am in DESPERATE need of a new one. The one we have now is in great condition and comfy. But, it's GREEN (like 90's hunter green) and it's a huge things that the arms are attached to the back so NO STUPID slipcover will fit!!! And I don't sew that well, yet! :) Still on the hunt and hoping to inherit the hubbys grandparents sofa when they get new stuff. Hers is so beautiful!
I used to have a gorgeous Broyhill set that I spent only $1000. It was microfiber, super comfy, gorgeous green , and was purchased using my discount. We owned for less than a year and had to sell it b/c of moving. {long story here} I can't wait to see your prices! :)
Our sofa is a hide-a-bed we bought new 2 years ago. The store was having a big sale and then they gave us $150 credit for our trade-in hide-a-bed that we had bought from the same store for $150 2 years prior. In the end, we paid $600 for a $1000 hide-a-bed and I just bought new foam for the cushions (they were really sinky) for $100. So, $700 total for a really comfortable couch that also doubles as a comfortable (really) bed when my in-laws come to visit. My mom slept on it for 3 1/2 months while my parents lived with us. It's been a Godsend for our tiny house.
I tried to vote but it said I already did. Stupid computers....
I paid in the $500 to $1000 category. On sale of course.
And do you know what that dumb sofa did after a month? It broke.
We have a $1,200 sofa bought at a trendy (and now extinct) furniture store in our formal living room, and an ugly free sofa we keep slipcovered in the family room.
30 years ago, we started married life with wonderful down sofa, 2nd hand, given to us by a family friend. It's been upward since then in price, as the only thing I'll spend real money on in decorating are good upholstered pieces and beds.
Our latest sofa is from a small shop in New England that hand-makes antique reproductions -- I love it, and hope to have it forever. I think it cost 1200, which was less than we'd have had to pay at Ethan Allen for mass produced.
Cass
I also got the already voted pop-up. So here's my vote... We spent $1000 on a leather loveseat and sofa. They are about 8 years old and are holding up wonderfully under the stress of two small children. They are comfy, cozy and perfect for us!
We got our brown leather sofa at a furniture outlet store here in town. It cost us $387! Here's a picture of it on our blog: http://mattandsarahj.blogspot.com/2009/07/shuffling.html
I found my dark brown velvet Century sofa at a resale shop for $550 and got them down to $475. (I found my sofa on the official Century website, and I think the price started around $1,500! Never could've paid that!) Then, in June, my mom made slipcovers for it out of painters' drop-cloths. Really lightens up my family room, and I love it!
If I had known you and your blog BEFORE I furnished our first home, 5 years ago...I would be participating in the price my space, but I'm embarrassed at how much we spent! I have learned a lot from your blog though and look forward to finding inexpensive treasures from here on out. :)
Love your blog!!
I tried to vote for 0-500, but it said I've already voted (I haven't).
My couch was given to me by my parents. It's long enough for a 6'0" person (my son) to lay down and not hang off. The seat is a single cushion and it has wooden legs. I love it.
It's covered with a brown suede-ish slip cover to protect it from my children. One day, I'll have it reupholstered.
Ours was over the $1500 amount but it's not that bad. Our sofa is my grandmothers and we had it redone. This included new caning and cushions and fabric. Plus refinishing the exposed wood and repair of the feet and legs. It was a big job. But it was well worth it to have my Grammy's sofa again and to have all my children loving it as much as I did - it was THE.PERFECT.FALL.ASLEEP.SPOT.
We invested in a Flexsteel sofa about 4 years ago, and it is one of the best purchases we've ever made! It still looks rand new, and the reason we bought it was for it's sturdiness.
Here's my vote....ours was free. Well, kind of. We got it when my dad's estate was settled last year. It is actually a loveseat that sat in his home office. I helped him pick it out several years ago before he remarried. It didn't really like it because it was "green". Dad didn't like green at all. It is a nice sage color and the softest fabric ever. I am about to recover it - maybe dad would be proud of me. It is a wonderful solid piece that we will probably never get rid of.
I can't wait for the party on Monday!
After being married 13 years, we were finally able to ditch our cheap saggy sofas we'd owned for forever, and invest in quality furniture for once. We spent nearly $2000 on our sofa and loveseat with ottoman, and it was worth it. I figure we'll keep them for at least 10 years if not more. They are very well built from a reputable company. It was the most we'd spent on furniture.
We bought our sectional sofa about 6 years ago on clearance at Hecht's (now Macy's) for $600. It was marked down considerably from the regular retail price. There was a small hole in the upholstery, but it's not noticeable. It's a bit too big for my living room, but I love it and can't bear to part with it just yet.
We bought a green chenille couch and chair 8 years ago. They were floor models from a Sears furniture store. We paid $1100 for both pieces. We saved $800 buying the floor models. They have held up great. The chenille fabric wears like iron. Sometimes I wish it would wear out because I would like to get a new couch in a neutral colour.
It says I already voted, but I didn't... We paid around $800 for our sectional on sale - it's a queen sized sleeper as well. Since our house is so small, getting a sleeper sofa was a definite must for me in case of guests (like hubby's grandma). 5 kids in a 3bedroom 1100sq ft house ~ we need all the sleep space we can get!
I work for my brother and he bought me a new sofa for a Christmas bonus a couple of years ago. WooHoo!
btw...I tried to vote, but it told me I already voted??
I didn't see a poll on your site.
But, our sofa was one of those items we wouldn't settle on. I needed a neutral color in a classic line. My hubby needed comfort. We found a Berkline sofa with great lines in an off white color (oyster). The entire thing reclines. It's the only sofa my hubby has ever been able to fall asleep on. It's made out of micro-fiber, so, even though it's light - nothing stains it. A damp cloth will clean up anything on it. We either paid $900 or $1,000 for it. I would definitely buy it all over again.
My sofa was originally from a design shop going out of business. We purchased a 7800 dollar
Christopher Guy sofa for 1000. Deal of the century!! I also purchased a lovely chair from the same designer. I would not trade the money we spent for anything. No way we could have bought such a lovely pair at the original price. My other sofa was a sofa bed about 700 and it resides in our bonus room with a tear on the back.Laura
After numerous cheap and uncomfortable sofas we just bought a beautiful, higher end sofa for our new house. We paid $4200, but it is down wrapped, 8-way hand tied, and gorgeous!
We had a black faux leather sofa from the 80s with the floppy cushions and all (I inherited it when we were married). I figured anything was better than that so I scrimped and saved and purchased a simple tan microfiber sofa for about $399. It's not super high quality, but the piece of mind it give me is PRICELESS.
Mine is a all leather navy blue sofa that I bought at a garage sale! HUGE score! I got it for $400! :D The matching loveseat was $250 (I talked him down by $50 since I took both pieces!) :D
Hooray! For once I am not the only person on here who actually paid more than $50 for something! Better still, I didn't have to vote in the most expensive category.
Our sofa is a recent purchase from Crate and Barrel. The one before was Marks & Spencer and made a long journey across the Atlantic when we moved from England. I'm hoping the new one will be as loyal as its predecessor!
I'm actually pretty surprised now looking back at what I spent on our living room sofa. But she's beautiful, with a pleated skirt that stops above the floor so you can see her legs, down pillows, and a neutral green matelasse fabric. I looove her.
We got our sofa, chair and a half, and ottoman for $400. This was a great craigslist find - the owners had only had it for about 6 mo. and it was in great condition. They were just moving and didn't want to take it! Its a great neutral color and durable fabric that we hope will last us a while. I dress it up with fun colored pillows.
The sofa which isn't in storage during the home restoration projects is one my grandpa purchased in the late 70's from a fine furniture store. It's yummy tufted dark chocolate leather. As for your link, when I tried to post your "price my nest" button on my blog last week...it refused to go where I wanted it and kept shooting things up above my blog title. hmmm...
: )

We got our sofa from returning duplicate wedding gifts from Rich's. So it was free from all the wedding gift credit!
After 18 years of marriage, we bought our first pieces of furniture (other than yard sale or handme downs). Sofa and chair. Wish we'd bought the ottoman also, but I love it. 10 years old, covered in about 5 different fabrics and I still love it. Paid less than $1000 I think.
Hello - Our sofa and love seat was given to me by a friend who bought new furniture. They are so comfy! Very cool wood decorative legs. The fabric is a little too dark for the look I'm trying to create, but I know slip covers can do the trick - just have to learn how.
Btw - I had no problems voting!
Blessings,
Marie

Wow! I must be shopping in the wrong places, because except for IKEA, I've never seen a sofa for uner $1000. And even though I spent what felt like a fortune, it STILL didn't hold up well under the use of 4 kids.
We got our sofa when a furniture store here was going out of business, so we got a REALLY good deal on it - under $500. It's a red microfiber suede sofa. I love it, but they say they're easier to clean...NOT! They are a pain in the patooty to clean!
We got our leather sofa for ZERO dollars when we were newlyweds. Another couple wanted a new style, so we gladly accepted it. Still love it, too!
I rented a U-haul,drove 1 hour for a toile slipcovered sofa -$200.
when I got it home I discover ed the original receipt..1 year old
rowe sofa retailed for $1400. Lucky!!
Both of our sofas were given to us from family members - so they were free! One is a very nice couch from about 10 years ago that was in my moms formal living room, so it was never sat on. Ugly upholstery which needs to be taken care of ASAP, but we'll survive. The other is a family heirloom antique wooden sofa with the wood carved arms and legs - it's beautiful! Unfortunately, the original upholstery was lost to 1970s redo, so now it's pale blue velvet corduroy. That too needs to be redone. But they've both got good bones!
all of ours have been free for us. We've had 4 sets in 7 years, but all free. We're currently on tan leather couch & an espresso leather sectional. With the 3 toddlers I'm loving the leather right now. =]
I have 2 sofas, one was free, the other was not so I voted for that one. A leather modular sectional, not exactly in the popular price range but I be it lasts until we die! So I'd say its a good buy.
I spent big bucks on my second sofa when our first one wore out. I loved that LaZboy sofa and was mad when it pooped out after 6 years, so I sprang for a very expensive one at Ethan Allen and I HATE it. It's slipcovered, but the slipcover can only be dry cleaned -- something they didn't tell me at EA until after the sofa was bought and paid for. And that was after I had specifically told the salesgirl that I wanted to be able to wash the slipcovers when the kids got them dirty. Instead it's $100 to dry clean it....
The only reason we spent $1200 dollars on our couch is because it is an antique, has sturdy bones and was worth keeping and getting recovered. That thing has been AWESOME to us and our 3 year old twins. It has Stainmaster in it and I mean NOTHING has penetrated that fabric. Worth every dime.

My sofa was 300 from Ikea. And when I bought 1 cover I got 1 free. So it was a great bargain!
We have two: one is a flexsteel (cushions/pillows will be replaced for the life of the sofa) and after sale price and a coupon it was $700. Still looks brand new after 10 years.
Our other sofa was purchased for $180 at a thrift store. After several years we took the cushions into a local upholstery shop to be replaced. Now it's as good as new. :)
Sorry I misquoted :( on the price of that Christopher Guy sofa ...it was 2000 not 1000....still a good deal when you consider it is down 8 way tied and gorgeous lines. The chair was originally 3000 reduced to 800 It is lovely with nailhead trim and down cushion. Laura
We spent around $5000 (feel free to have a heart attack now!) on our Bassett sectional with upgraded fabric. We wanted a comfy sofa our family could curl up on...and one that would last a LONG time.
Well, we've had it a year and already had to have one of the cushion cores replaced as well as the cover on that cushion. Two more cushions need to have their covers replaced--and one of those cushions is rarely sat on!!
Yes, all this stuff is under warranty...but it still makes me MAD.
Never ever again will I spend this much on a sofa. NEVER. Nor will I buy this brand of sofa again. At this point I feel we will be lucky to get five years out of this one--which is equivalent to spending $1000 a year on a sofa! That is ridiculous.
Lesson learned, that is for sure!

My mom used my wedding as an excuse to redecorate her living room, so our entire living room set (couch, chair, ottoman, coffee table, and two side tables) was free! The upholstery is the ugliest color of sea-foam green I've ever seen, and the back cushions have a paisley design that screams, "I love the 80s!!!"
...but hey, it was free. And very comfortable!
I had to guess because we got one of those whole sets, sofa, loveseat, chair and ottoman for one price. I'm ready to break up the set I think, uh, in two more years, maybe if I can wait that long.
Our's was over $1000. My husband and I saw it in Ashley's showroom in San Diego and bought it in Vegas.
We just love it!
I gave my $1200 sofa to my son and bought one I LOVE on Craigslist for $100. It's my favorite sofa ever! I'll never buy retail again...Craigslist in Austin is amazing. :)Nancy
We had ours given to us by my inlaws and they helped us reupholster it. So we spent about $100 on it! It's gorgeous and I LOVE it...but I'm thinking a crisp white slipcover is in my future...
I suppose my sofa won't count here.
I'm making one for my dollhouse! So far I've spent about 50 cents. That was for the Dollar Store napkin fabric I'm using!
:)

My husband works at La-Z-Boy and gets discounts. He also knows how to build the furniture.
That said, I went and picked out something pricey from a different company. Ugh. Then I got sick of it and started using slipcovers. Live and learn, I guess.
My husband bought our sofa shortly after we started dating. Cute story: since he knew I had taken some interior design classes, he wanted me to help pick out his new sofa. Unfortunately, he lived nearly 400 miles away, and I couldn't travel to see him that weekend (had to work). But, determined to get my opinion, he waited until I was off work, and called me to discuss his choices and send me cell-phone pictures to see what he was talking about! The choices were between a sectional, and a big brown sofa (that was a tad too big for his tiny apartment). We decided on the cream sectional (I think he paid about $400), and although it's been a bit of a monster to move and integrate into our current apartment, it's definitely comfy. Although it's in desperate need of a slipcover--the cream upholstery didn't last long with two bachelors (husband and his roommate in the pre-wife days) and now a klutzy wife! ;) Time to pull out the sewing machine...
Don't tell my husband (even though I think he already knows) but after long persuading and acquiring, I don't really like our sofa as much as I'd hoped. My kids spill more than I thought and I wish I'd bought leather for that reason, and apparently if you want to fit comfortably on Ikea furniture, you have to be a midget or Japanese--not an over-sized American.
We have - count 'em - 5 sofas in our living room and didn't pay a dime for any of them. Now...2 of them are not in the best shape and I would LOVE to see them gone ASAP, but hubby is not quite on board with that since I don't have anything to replace them with just yet.
But we have 2 deep red couches that I love...and a deep green couch that is pretty, too.
Can't beat free! =-D
I have a couch and loveseat set in a sage green green velvet type fabric that is absolutely gorgeous! $89.06 from Ebay, nicest stuff I have ever had. When I picked it up from a "mini" mansion (lol), the guy was apologizing because it was just their "basement" furniture and not nice enough for the living room...talk about feeling poor! One mans floor is another mans ceiling!
When I graduated from college we bought a sofa done in blue & white pinstripes for $350. It was so amazing to have a new couch and at such a bargain! Unfortunately, it got very dirty very quickly and the cushion covers - while indicating they were washable - did not hold up and eventually it looked like Wolverine had come to visit. Then we bought a stylish chenille couch at Macy's for $800 and again, another couch that after only a couple year's of use fell apart. The weave came loose and soon enough there were holes all over the damn thing. When we moved into our old loft we said, "let's buy a great sectional that we can have for years." We didn't want microsuede which was all the rage at the time and we felt that leather was too expensive. After looking for several weeks, we ended up with a giant comfy sectional that is covered in Sunbrella fabric - with cats who sometimes vomit on it while we're away, this has been a lifesaver! We paid way more than I ever would have imagined for a couch - $3k - but it was been the single best furniture investment we made. Five years and a quick washing later and the thing looks brand new. I would definitely recommend Sunbrella covered furniture for anyone who leads an active lifestyle and Lee furniture for its durability and construction quality.
