Price My Space:: Living Room Part 1

The bulk of our furniture was purchased five years ago. It was 5 years ago to the month I think, when my husband and I sat down on the lone place to sit in our house besides the toilet and decided it was time to think about furnishing our home. At the time we were able to set aside some money every month to put towards furniture and such. My goal was to focus on one room at a time so we could see progress and so I wouldn't be overwhelmed. My other goal was to pay cash for everything.

My first priority was places to sit. So we started in the living room. I had a yard sale and sold our old furniture and we had no where to sit for a few weeks while we waited for our sofa.

1. Window Mistreatments: the fabric was $7 per yard {purchased at 1502 Fabrics in Thomasville, NC, 5 years ago} each panel is about 3 yards so each panel was $21 plus the trim at $3ish per yard so that is another $9 per panel. Each panel was about $30 completed. I bought the rod at Target for $30 and have used it in 4 houses so far. We've got another window that cost the same on the other side of the room. {See how to make them here.} Total for both windows: $180 These are my most expensive windows and have been used for 5 years in 5 different houses! And I wish I would have bought one more foot of fabric--then I could hang my rods even higher.

2. Sofa Table and stuff: Table $109 at a crazy unfinished furniture place that has since gone out of business. I bought it already painted black 5 years ago. Changed out the knob: $4. Ottoman was included in a set I'll tell you about on down. Lamps, TJ Maxx, $39 each, 5 years ago--I moved them from my boy's room. On the table there's some red stuff I pulled out of this wreath and a box thing that I had in college sitting on a candle holder that is chipped that was $1. I painted the box blue last month. Pointy thing on the wall, Goodwill, a few months ago, $7. Total: $199 not including the ottoman.

3. Armiore: Purchased used from a friend for $75 --again, 5 years ago. I painted it last month with Behr Paint Plus Primer all in one stuff that was ??? Maybe $30ish. I'll tell you more about painting it soon but here's the before. It was super easy. I still need to find 3 knobs for it. Plates; the middle blue one was a gift to myself back when I had that big tassel sale I bought this plate for $13 at HomeGoods. I had the red ones {part of a set from Target 5 years ago 4 for $10} big green ones were $2 each from the rich Goodwill and the square one was $3 from HomeGoods. Total: $130

4. Fireplace Wall: Well, it already looks different up there. I'll list what you see in the original photo and I'm still not happy with it at all so just so you know, it will keep looking different.

  • mirror: $50 Garden Ridge 2 years ago
  • white urn: $20 Hobby Lobby 6 years ago
  • red plate: $2.50 part of that set
  • white crock: wedding gift {one of my favorite things}
  • books: .75 cents yard sale
  • wood thing on the fireplace front $13 TJ Maxx 6 years ago {hiding an ugly little scroll thing}
Total: $86.25

Now:

  • urn: $20 with free branches from my yard
  • books: .75 cents
  • shutters: $10
  • wood thing: $13
  • starfish: ?? I have no idea how that appeared in my house
Total: $43.75 and I like it better

So far we are at $552.75 and we don't even have a place to sit yet. And if you want to see the photos closer in, you should be able to click them to enlarge. Go here for part 2.

i just had to tell you something that happened yesterday! even though we've never actually met, i thought of you as soon as it happened. 2 realtors were previewing my home, and they kept exclaiming how well it's decorated. they looked at my walls hung with plates and my window mistreatments, and then they asked me if i'm a designer! i cracked up- mine are the shabbiest of mistreatments- mostly hot glue & permanent marker, safety pins & luck. i politely thanked them & giggled to myself all afternoon... thanks for showing me how to fool everyone into thinking i'm classy & stylish! : )
and i like the "price my space" post- if i had a blog , i'd participate!
have a great day,
rachel

LOVE the armoire...well, your whole LR space is amazing!

I have a computer armoire that I am thinking about refinishing, but the task scares me. It's Cherry and doesn't go with my "beachy" decor. I don't know if I should sell it or paint it. Help!

I'd love to know more about painting the armoire. I have the same one. I want it painted. Husband says it will look bad. I say he is WRONG!

Sara @ Be Still and Know said...

thanks for keeping it real....it's encouraging to see how some how you change things out often (fireplace) like we all do but also are practical and keep some things for 5 years (window) thanks! :)

I am obsessed with knowing more about this room. And I already know about this room. So fun.

So far, so good! I think it's great that you can even remember where/how much each thing was!

Love your deals. And I'm just chomping at the bit for that armoire tutorial. Mine is so sad and piney in all its 1990s glory. It's just begging for a makeover.

How is it that you just moved in and it's amazing? I so want to do your price my space but just don't know how I'll get it done...I'd have to get it all photo worthy. ;)

I love your room. I is so pretty and well put together. I love the painted furniture. I think it adds so much to the room. I have a suggestion for the drapes. You can buy a solid or coordinating fabric and add to the top or bottom of the panels and then you can hang them as high as you like. I added to the top of mine, you can see them on my blog. Looks super and really makes an easy fix. Hugs, Marty

Great! Can't wait to hear about painting the armoire. We have that exact one and have wanted to paint it for some time and plan to do so soon. Thanks!

Kathy, I have a sickeness. I can remember the store, price and sometimes month that I bought each item.

The only think I'll be looking up is the sofa because I want to make sure what's in my head is the right number.

And, if something is inexpensive it sticks in my head because I'm so shocked and happy, and if something is a major purchase it sticks in my head because I usually take lots of time considering it.

Too bad I cannot use that brain space for something useful like memorizing the Bible or my phone number {seriously, I don't know it, it keeps changing.}

Janna said...

I can't wait to hear how you did the armoire--I have a similar one made of (I think) the same soft rustic knotty pine wood. Still like the shape, but have been wondering if I could pull off painting it or not. I love how yours looks!

Love that armoir. The color is great. This is fun, to see the deals you got and what you paid! Looking forward to the rest.
Thank you for all the inspiration. You're the best!

You , my friend are a rock star at remembering what you payed for things. I remember my REALLY good deals, but not everything!
I agree, btw thata place to sit is overrated. ;)

Nester, I was thinking the same thing as Marty-just add some fabric to the top or bottom and raise your drapes as high as you like-I think it would look fantastic in this room! I'm going to be totally pushy here and suggest a tich of something or other over or in front of the shutter over the fireplace. It just doesn't look quite finished and the rest of the room does.

PS-when we moved back to the US from England it took me over a year to memorize my US phone number, and I swear to you I still have to stop and think about it every time. But I never call my phone because I'm always...HERE.

Great post! Your room looks fabulous. When I had some drapes that were too short, I hot glued fringe to the bottom, so that I could move the rod up. laurie

Yikes, you got some good deals! I think that my media console was more than $600. I really needed to get my bargain hunting hat on sooner.

Gina @ The Shabby Chic Cottage said...

Ohhh...I'm a cheapskate, and I'm almost scared it's gonna show! Can't wait to see everyone's spaces, though! And, of course, I'll be sharing mine as well.

Love the armoire--I have to have that color---what is it?

Nester, you know that everyone is dying over your armoire. Are you really going to hold us in suspence before you will at least tell us the color that you painted it? Curious minds are waiting with paint brushes in hand....

Funky Junk Interiors said...

Yup.. same-ish airmoire here in that rustic knotty pine look, complete with rusty hinges I actually really like. I want mine white with a glaze. However I worry about the oily finish on it. Can't wait to hear how you painted yours and not have that gunk bleed through.

Look forward to the rest of your rating! The room looks so cozy and inviting!

Nester, I love this room so much I have a pic of it saved in my folder of "inspiration rooms". I love how you paid so little to get it to look so great. I want to be you when I grow up!

I really really like the blue you painted your armoire and I can't wait to try that new Behr paint on something when I'm feeling less pregnant and more motivated.

I'm so jealous that you have the ability to pick out good paint colors. I always have to copy other people because I just cannot ever seem to get the color right on my own.

AnNicole @ OurSuburbanCottage said...

I love this. It really makes me want to go through and price everything in my living room...although I don't know that I can remember the prices of the accessories as well as you can...although it's a pretty safe bet that anything I bought was under $20...that seems to be my limit :-).

Can't wait to see more!

when we bought our cabin it had pretty ugly furniture in it that conveyed with the house, but we said, no thank you we have our own, which we did not, and so we literally had a bed and a hard chair at first. One weekend after our butts were so tired we went furniture shopping, It was amazing how comfy every sofa felt. I like what we bought, but in typical buyers regret fashion, it is too long in the seat for me and my feet dangle above the floor like I am a little girl! ha ha!

looking forward to part two!

I have to tell you something, also! (just like rachel blazer)

That blue armoire is just beautiful. I love looking at people's houses - especially ones as pretty as yours, and the fact that you're sharing how inexpensively you did it all - wonderful!
Thank you.

Just so you know, I LOVE your blog! I discovered it a few weeks ago and I love checking in every day or so. I think you're awesome. I am in the process of trying to get my own blog started, but it's so hard to find time. But I just wanted you to know how inspiring you are. You are helping me to see how happy I can be in my own surroundings without spending a lot of money. It's great to be content with beautiful things that don't cost a fortune. Thank you!

You're home is adorable!

My dining room table cost $87.50 at an antique shop over 35 years ago (have no idea why I remember that). My daughters (who have now been married 25 years) won't let me get rid of it because they remember too many dinners, homework horrors and parties around it. So, it stays! It looks a bit tired, but . . . things don't have to be perfect, do they?

well what a wonderful idea to "price my space" == lovely all of it...I am trying to figure out how you were able to take your rod and drapes with you in 5 moves? Usually we have to leave those when we sell....I recently sold a home (my fav thing said was: Oh, you had this staged!!!=== Well, not really cuz i staged it myself!!! Anyway I had bought the most beautiful silk panels for the dining room and living room and would have loved to bring them along to the next home!!
