Beautifying: It's A State of Mind

This birdcage is one of my favorite things. I don't have a bird. I don't need a big huge 3 foot tall bird cage. I didn't wake up one morning saying "this is the day, I shall buy me a needless birdcage". I was out, I fell in love, I had the cash. I bought it for love, not knowing where I would use it and decided it was worth the risk and that I could make it work. On the drive home I had decided it would look striking on my dining room table. When I got home, I forgot, we had a chandelier and the cage wouldn't fit. That forced me to try it in our bedroom and it worked beautifully.

Over the weekend I was hanging with my our family at my sister's house and my dad mentioned something about me carrying around my fabric all the time and how people approach shopping for their home. He asked a question that he probably doesn't remember even asking, and that got me thinking.

There are two kinds of shopping and shoppers.

1. Need Based Shopping/ers. You need a kitchen table so you save the money, measure, take a free Saturday and don't stop until you find the right table.

2. Beautifying State of Mind Shopping/ers. You are out for whatever reason, you see something you are drawn to, it's affordable, you LOVE it you might not know EXACTLY where in your house it will go, you just know that it will GO.

I would dare to say that most of the people reading this blog have experienced shopping method number one.

And, with this audience, I think lots of us have a beautifying state of mind. And we beautifiers can take it too far and have closets full of empty photo frames {or birdcages} that we love and were a great price. We can mistakenly make a purchase that we just didn't need and cannot use. We have to watch out for that. We could learn a lot by the strictly need based shoppers.

However, I've also shopped with people who have agonized over a purchase. They have found something for $7.99 that they love and they stand there in the store paralyzed with fear. Should they buy it? Where EXACTLY would they put it? If it's a frame, what photo will they put in it? What if they hate it. Never mind, it might not be the perfect shade of silver.

To those people I say, try it. Don't take that kind of risk with a sofa but, do take that risk with a decorative pillow. You can always take it back. And, before long, you start learning what will work and what won't and you'll have to return things less and less.

I'm not advocating shopping as a past time. Nor am I saying that you should purchase anything you love if you can afford it. But, I am saying, if you think that you are strictly a need based shopper and then wonder why your home doesn't seem finished, you might be stuck in the details.

I tend to be a need based shopper with the big things and have a beautifying state of mind with the small things. If I'm at a yard sale and something is 50 cents--no question, if I think I can use it, I'll try it and if it doesn't work I'll donate it. I also think it's great to shop with a friend who is the opposite type of shopper as you. You kind of balance things out.

armoire:need based shopping/stuff on top:beautifying state of mind

But, for any of you out there that feel like you can't make a small purchase that you can afford unless you know the very place it will work perfectly, I ask you to take that risk. If you truly find the item beautiful and think it would enhance your home, check out the return policy and just try it. Take it home, try it out 37 different places and start to learn what you do and don't like and what does and does not work. It's not rocket surgery, it's beautifying your home and it's supposed to be fun!

What kind of shopper are you?

I have definitely been bogged down and stuck in the details at times. I'm getting better, but that was exactly why my house didn't seem finished for so long. I was a need based shopper and couldn't make the switch. Great post.

I am one of those people who *used* to agonize over every $5 purchase....UNTIL, I started reading your blog! Only since I got "cured" has my home more fully reflected my personality and tastes. I am like you though, I save and am thoughtful for the big purchases, and am a beautifying type shopper in the small things.

I am the one in the aisle for hours contemplating and driving my husband INSANE with my fretting. However, my jekyl side will appear from time to time and purchase way too much on a whim and then spend the next week returning it over guilt from having spent that money without thinking first. And still there is a third side of me that has collected too much stuff with no 'home' to put them in and so they clutter the house in which they reside to the point where it paralyzes me to clean any further and it seeps into my whole life and I just feel cluttered. Yep, my husband has a right to be insane, huh? I know I am :)

Soooooo true!

And you're soooo cute. I've heard of "rocket science", and I've heard of "brain surgery" but never "rocket surgery"!

P.S. I might add that "beautifying shoppers" often have a shelf somewhere to store extra pieces. We then shop from our own collection. Know what I mean?

Oh, but I left off the important part of my post - God is so gracious and loving that He sees me and my home as perfect right now the way it is - clutter and all! So, He and I are working towards me living fully in His grace and love; and the insanity will slowly wear away. Praise Be!

I am a beautifying state of mind shopper unless it's furniture. If I see something I love and I can afford it I can't grab it fast enough. If I love it I can probably use it. Plus, I like to move things around in my home pretty often so I always know I can use it sometime.

I do love me some pretty things in the home.

I'm usually one of those shoppers who has to stop and think "where will I put this" - but I'm learning to buy it if I like it - I will find a spot! - I must say, it make shopping MUCH more fun!!

I tend to be a little of both. I'm like you, need shopper on big ticket items, beautifying shopper on smaller decor items.

Me... I'm a need based shopper. But I only shop when I'm beautifying. Unless you count the grocery store, which contributes to the beauty of life!

But I usually only shop if I'm trying to make something pretty. Build something, need wood, shop for wood, go back and finish.

'course I'm totally out of place in this discussion for obvious reasons.

I can't remember the last thing I bought for 50 cents. Might have been a washer. (not a machine, a washer, for a bolt)

Have a great week!

Thank God! Someone else loves needless bird cages... I always have! Never bought one and never admitted I wanted one until shopping with my mom last weekend.

There were several at "Hobby Lobby" and the "Home Goods" stores, I kept talking about how pretty they were and my mother gave me the strangest look and said "Please don't tell me you're getting a bird? You don't need a bird."

She wasn't any more releived that I wanted one just to have one WITHOUT a bird. I can't choose between the black or white cages I run into. Yours is gorgeous!

I am usually the one that you find standing in front of something at the store, saying things like "do you think this will look okay? will this clash with the paint? Will it look funny in our house?" I agonize over everything! Shopping is usually pretty stressful for me, and I need to learn to relax a little. Thank you for this post. I will try to take your words to heart next time I am at the store wondering whether I should buy something or not. :)

It has taken me almost 22 years of marriage to become a Beautifying State of Mind Shopper. I have always been so practical, if it didn't have a purpose I didn't need it. But recently I have begun to buy little pretty things. I would still fall under the minimalist title I am sure but when I see a milk glass piece for a buck or two I don't hesitate to pick it up. I even, thanks to my son's wood shop project, have a chest at the end of my bed filled with little treasures that aren't currently being used. Way out of character for me but I am enjoying it and learning along the way.

I am new to your blog and I'm hooked! I am def. a need shopper. I agonize over every penny! I'm going to try to change that this weekend when I visit the flea market! Thanks!

Oh, great post! I'm definitely a need based shopper for the big stuff, like furniture. For the little accessory type things, I'm a beautifying state of mind gal. It helps that I like to make most of that stuff myself from things I find in thrift stores.

Your birdcage collection cracks me up! Could you send me one? LOL I really want one, but can't find one I love for the right price. I don't know why I have agonized about it for months, but I have...which is insane because it's normally not something I would think twice about. I even saw a cute one for 70% off at Joann the other day and couldn't pull the trigger on buying it...it was under $10. What's wrong with me?

You mom did the BSM thing this weekend. She found 2 lamps and 2 pictures she LOVED on sale at Steinmart. She knew where she wanted the lamps but the pictures? They're still on the floor leaning against the sofa. All she knew was "I need me some yellow." How can you ever shop the house if everything you have was bought to go in a certain place?

And I'm thinking about a new game -- "Find the Nester's unintentional misuse of a phrase" -- there's always one there (it's not the rocket surgery thing).

Unknown said...

I'm definitely a beautifying state of mind shopper, riddled with guilt when I buy something I don't need. Is there a medication for that? Of course, it depends on the price point. At the Goodwill store, I'll buy everything that has potential, because I can do that and still only spend $12.

I'm a designer by trade, so I always have my eye out for things that would work beautifully at some point in my home or someone else's home. But, like you,for the big things I'm all about planning and specific shopping. In fact, I did a lot of specific shopping at Ballard Backroom yesterday, and came away with large pieces to furnish my husband's home office at about 60% off retail pricing. Love that!

Leila said...

I agree!

I think that if you take care not to shop in pricey places (unless ONLY in the clearance LOL) you should risk BUYING WHAT YOU LOVE!

You should have a BWYL emergency fund!

Especially at tag sales -- you will never see it again!

No problem with the inexpensive items.

Def. think more about "do I need this?" for larger items.

I've become wiser over the years with my shopping, not so impulsive.

I scored at a yard sale this weekend! Lots of $1 items. Fun!

Great post, Nester. Happy Monday!

"Rocket Surgery"..ha!

I tend to be a need based shopper that is intentionally looking for beautifing stuff. I used to be 100% beautifying, but I ended up with waaay too much stuff that I really wasn't going to use and that gave me a tummy ache.

I've finally leanred to find a balance. If I find something I love, that makes me jump out of my skin because I can't believe how wonderful and inexpensive it is, then I'll buy it...even if I'm not sure exactly where it will go. But if something's just really pretty, and I really like it, but it doesn't make me jump out of my skin, and I don't know where I would put it..then I pass. Make sense?

Happy medium...that's my motto.

P.S. I love your photos. I always love seeing little glimpses of your home.

I am a "now that would look good" shopper. If something grabs my eye I trust my instincts (when the price is right of course, staying on budget these days). If the color is off or it looks hideous, like you mentioned, I take it back. (I hope leaving the price tags on your decor while you think about it is acceptable home fashion). I also have about many bird cages around my house- minus the birds. Love them!

So true! I am need based on big things - those I like to know where they'll go before I buy. With little things - I find if I don't buy what I like when I see it (if it's affordable) I always end up regretting it! You can almost always find places to tuck in sweet little pretty things!

Dana and Daisy said...

I agonaize over the big purchases. It takes me months literally to make a furniture purchase, unless it is a dire need. On the little stuff, I'm a fly by the seat of my pants girl. But I 've learned over the long haul, don't buy stuff just because it's cute. I have given away so much stuff over the years, and think of all the money I've wasted on mindless purchases. Still I make mistakes in buying things and items rotate in and out more frequently than hubby would like. But my local Goodwill donation center knows me by first name =)

I think I used to be a 1.5. I didn't feel free enough to be a total 2, but was more impulsive than a 1. Now, I'm pretty much a 1 as we're trying to pare back clutter in an attempt to sell our house, move to a new house or something of that sort.

How do you manage clutter? Is it something you worry about?

Christine said...

Oh, I can SO relate to this post!! This weekend while out garage sale-ing, I came across some great 8x10 distressed black frames. Solid wood. Beautiful. I didn't get them. I started agonizing over the $2 a piece (I'm unabashedly cheap), whether I really would get around to that family photo grouping I had planned for the staircase, didn't I have other projects that were already in the works and shouldn't I finish those up before buying something else. Oh, the sheer agony. Over SIX stinkin' dollars!!

I didn't buy them. Cruised the neighborhood for other sales; regretted passing on them; went back to the lady's garage sale (looking like a crazy woman); and alas, they were already gone!

Lesson learned.

Pauline Wiles said...

Need-based shopping sounds really sensible but has led me to some bad purchases. When I got my first place, I 'needed' quite a few things, so I bought with my head not my heart and never really liked them. Much better, I think, to wait until you love something.
The extra dimension, which derails me often, is when I adore the beautifying item, but I know Beloved Husband will roll his eyes in horror. Recently I've been sneaking a few items into the house with a somewhat coy "if you hate it of course I'll return it darling" line. Sometimes it works, sometimes not!

Bethany said...

Nester- I just realized I have learned so much from you over the past several months of reading your blog!!! I used to be a combination of those types of shoppers- I would plan for big things (and agonize over them) and then often agonize over little things and when I did buy something, all too often I would buy the wrong thing! I have several things stuffed under my bed that I bought before really realizing what my style is and what kinds of things I like in my home!
A few weekends ago I went on a big shopping trip with some girlfriends and I came so prepared- with pictures of homes that inspired me and a list of items I was looking for, including swatches and paint colors from my own home. I was so focused and ready that I bought so many wonderful things that I just fell in love with and even since coming home I have not regretted a single purchase! (like I know I would have in the past!) Great post, and keep up the good work!!!

I love the idea of picking up things as you see them but like many others I don't want to add clutter or spend money on stuff I don't end up liking or using. What I'm thinking is I should start a 'beautifying budget' of cash so I can purchase without guilt. Anyone else have something similar?

Pretty Organizer said...

Need based.... guilty. With 6 kids I can't afford to do opportunity shopping. In reality I never go our to just shop for the sake of shopping because I don't have the money to spend. That being said, I'm not paralyzed by fear either. IF I'm out and see a deal (because the cost it the bottom line) and I KNOW I won't find it anywhere else, and I LOVE what I see, I buy... BUT only IF I have the money to spare. It's tricky to be ruled by the purse strings but my husband insists that the truly talented decorators in the world are the ones that can do it on a budget, not the ones that have an endless supply of dough to buy all the perfect items... I'd like to "try" the endless dough route just to see...

I am like you, Nester. Big things take me forever, little things come home with me right then. They almost always find a great place to shine because I make them work. For the purchases that don't work, and do not get returned, I have found a good solution. I get together with some girl friends once a year and we shop each others impulse purchases. Whatever doesn't go home with someone else we take to Goodwill. It has been lots of fun and unless it's a really nice piece, we don't charge each other, just swap.

I had one of those great beautifying moments today. I was in TJMaxx looking for a new plate to replace the one from my bathroom that I broke this morning (ugh) and found some okay things. Then I saw a big candle holder and I think I stopped breathing for a few seconds. No hesitation, just in the cart. No idea where I will put it. I'll find a place for it.

Those are my favorite finds. And yes, some do reside in my basement but hey, I would have regretted walking out without them!

I never did get that darn plate today.

I guess I'm a hybrid of the two. My mom calls me the queen of take-back. My philosophy is I won't know until I try it. You do have to know the return policies, though. And I have to pace myself. Nothing is worse than spending an entire Saturday afternoon returning stuff. It makes me nervous if I can't return it but like you said if you love it give it a try. The fabric inspiration for my latest den redo was total whim (I was in the market for fabric but not THAT fabric), I went for it and now I LOVE it!

I am definitely not a need based shopper. LOL. But I think that if we all were strict need based shoppers our homes would be bare! Because like you said about the birdcage we don't really need things like that, we really only need the basics a table, chairs, couch, and bed. But if that was all we had well booo, it would be boring LOL. I agree about buying it and you can always return it. Often time I agonize, not over a few dollars, but big purchases and so I buy it and after having it for a few days I get over the impulse and return it :)

I'm kind of both~mostly I just go to yard sales, find things I *love* and then find the perfect place for them in my home. But, I have also gone with something specific in mind, such as stuff for the top of the bookcase in the bedroom, etc. I think you can be much more frugal if you are in the beautifying state of mind though so you don't have to feel like you *have* to buy something.

I'm a combo--need based shopper who tends to get paralized on non-need purchasing. However, if I'm focused on a project (redecorating baby's room)I find it easier to spend on beautifying when I spend it all at once. I just don't do random very well. Great post.

Thank you for the perfect description of me (standing in the aisle agonizing). I've gotten better with this but I'm not where I want to be. The problem I have is that my husband is a need-based shopper. It took me YEARS to convince him that two wooden boards laying across cinderblocks does not an entertainment center make. So when I do make a purchase, he questions me about it saying we don't need it and where will I put this junk. Although recently, I just bought a nice picture frame out of the blue and he loved it. So go figure. Anyway, I am buying more affordable things to pretty up the house but I do have to be careful because my house is small and I'm starting to get cluttered.

Nester,
You will rake in a tidy sum if you put whatever bird cages and whatnots you have on eBay and post a link here. Try a couple items, and make sure you are sitting down when you see where the auctions end. Pay the 10 extra cents to have the auctions end when people are home, like on a Sunday evening at 7 PM eBay/Pacific Coast time. Seriously. Everyone wants some Nester style.

I am definitely a needs-based shopper. I won't shop for beautiful things unless I know I need them -- well mostly, anyway --nobody's perfect. I think it might be harder to return unwanted goods here in Australia.

By the way, is "past time" an American expression? I though it was 'pastime', meaning a hobby, but have seen it the other way on many US blogs.
