Trashy & Brassy to Sassy & Classy

This is a guest post from my blogging sister in decorating crime, Kimba from A Soft Place to Land. If you've been under a rock and have yet to meet her and all her genius ways fly on over and say hello.

When it comes to furnishing my home, I love the challenge of finding a piece of bedraggled furniture and rehabbing it into something that I love. This method also works nicely with my cheapskate tendencies.

Let me start with this disclaimer...What I do isn't furniture restoration or even refinishing. If you do that type of work, you really should look away now. The pieces I work on are usually someone's unloved trash or thrift store bargains. I use paint, fabric and some elbow grease to create something new and pretty that I can love.

I was up for a challenge the day that I saw this brassy, trashy vanity stool at the Salvation Army for $5. I threw him into back of the van with visions of a dramatic makeover for my bathroom. Every girl needs a soft place to sit in her bathroom, right?

Here's what I used for this dramatic makeover:

  • Brassy, trashy stool
  • Rustoleum spray paint in Heirloom White
  • Burlap
  • Staple gun
  • Stencil
  • Lumiere fabric paint in metallic brown
  • Sponge brush

The seats on these types of stools (and most chairs, for that matter) are easily removed by unscrewing the seat from the bottom and lifting it off. This will let you paint the frame without protecting the seat.

Two or three coats of my beloved Heirloom White spray paint (satin finish) covered up the horrible brass. Note: I did not prime this piece because it's going in my bathroom where it won't get banged around (and because I'm lazy like that). BUT, if you want to increase the durability factor, a base coat of primer will greatly increase the chances of your paint not chipping.

Recovering a seat like this one is as easy as wrapping new fabric over the seat cushion and stapling it to the bottom with the staple gun. Once the seat is recovered, you just reattach it using the same hardware that you just removed.

The monogram was done using a regular stencil, fabric paint and a sponge brush. Burlap takes fabric paint beautifully, so it was an easy way to add a bit of personalization.

I'll be honest...Even I, lover of all things aerosol, (spray paint, hairspray and cheese whiz) wasn't convinced I was going to love the end results on this one. I knew that the brass could be transformed with spray paint. But I was worried that the scrolls and swirlies would look dated even when they were painted. But now I love it! What do you think?

Do you have something at home that you could transform with some paint, fabric and elbow grease?

Thanks Kimba, I now want to paint everything I own, and used to own, and got rid of too soon. By the way, today is moving day for us. I'll have some photos soon!

In other news, Jon and Kate's {K8?} old house is still on the market {thanks em} if you are interested. It brings back so many nice memories. I'd love to know what the note in the bathroom say. Because I am nosey like that. But let's play nice in the comments about them please.

That is a great idea! I am constantly amazed at all the cool painting ideas you have!

Sarah said...

Glad you showed the after pic first, because I too, was thinking, could she pull this one off? And of course...no biggie for you! I love it! Is there anything you can't transform!!??

Love me some Kimba. That seat looks great. Makes me think even I could do it!

Good luck with moving. And before you think you're too hillbilly, our family once moved everything we owned in my uncle's horse trailers. Now THAT'S hillbilly. : )

Super cute chair! Good luck on the move Nester! I love Jon and Kate's house. It's so sweet...but there's no way we could afford that.
I miss them being in that house.

Of course, we love Kimba. I may live in the country, but I'm not that hillbillie.
Actually, you two decorating ladies would be proud. We have no TV as of Fri since that convetor box doesn't work out there and we have no dish/cable. Well, we got us a yard saling deal on dish, and they came to install it. He said the only place they could put it was right in the middle of my front yard and he was then offended when I told him that wasn't an option. He encouraged me that millions of people all around America have it in their front yard, smack dap in front of their walk way and since I lived back in the trees, no one would see me. You'd laugh at what I told him, but..hmm...no dish. That just would not have fit with your curb appeal post. We have to cut down some trees before we get creative on placement. :)

How smart! A tacky chair like that would make me turn my head, rather than see the potential.

Cheryl said...

Love the after pic Kimba. You and the Nester have a knack for finding some cool stuff. Our Goodwill and yard sales aren't as good here.

Cheryl said...

Nester, almost forgot, good luck with your move. Can't wait to see how you will mistreat the windows in your new house.

Cindy said...

Amazing!! I used to own something that looked remotely like that, I should have kept it!! Love the monogrammed seat, too. Happy moving, may all your treasure make it to their new home in one piece! Hugs, Cindy S

Excellent redo! I'm so in love with all white, but will have to wait a bit on that since we are still moving in (2 years) and repainting someone elses's style setting up our previous decor. Collecting inspiration and so appreciative!

Love the chair!

I'm with you...I would love to see what the notes say in the bathroom. I watch the show all the time! I honestly like them...I couldn't imagine having 8 kids and staying sane! My 2 kids are a handful! Lol!

I think those are Bible verses she had taped to her mirror - like you used to see on the kitchen cupboards.

Hope your move goes well

I was just bidding on a little chair like this off shopgoodwill.com and LOST! I am now very distraught.

All these wonderful ideas are helping me look at something a lot more creatively. You always do such a beautiful job. This little stool is now just gorgeous. Hugs, Marty

I love Kimba's blog! I never thought to spray paint furniture until I started reading her blog.

The house is cute but way more than I'd want to pay for it. Couldn't afford it now anyway but if I could I still wouldn't buy it when I could get something here like that for around 1/2 the price.

Truly an awesome transformation!

I would have been worried about it still being cheesy, too - but it turned out SO cute!! I hope my Salvation Army has something for me ...

That looks AMAZING! Love the burlap!

Also, love Jon and Kate...those were good times back in that house.

Heirloom White, it's my flavor of the month in spray paint. Love what you did!

I love all these makeover ideas - it gives me new eyes when I am out at garage sales and thrift stores!! Oh, the possibilities!!! :)

tracyvanhorne said...

Lovin what you did to that stool! Good job! :) I love spray paint but totally suck at using it... seem easy enough (point & spray) but I always screw it up. Any words of wisdom there?

Gina said...

Wow! I was right there with you--totally unconvinced that the shape would look good even painted--but it turned out lovely! And I love the contrast between the rough burlap and the feminine scrolls. What a great project!

Jared, Brittany & Charlotte said...

LOVE the refab! And I'm pretty sure those are all verses of Scripture on the mirror. I saved the picture, zoomed in like something crazy, and can make out that the third from the top is Proverbs 3:5-6. I swear I'm not a stalker, just curious :)

Nancy said...

Do you know I just passed up a stool like this recently? (Now kicking self) I did, however, "find" on the curb a baker's rack-lightweight, trashy, shiny, brassy...I knew I saw possibilities! I suppose it will do nicely for plants or in the "office" guest room with baskets? hmmmm

I LOVE what you did to that chair...beautiful! I would love to have Jon & Kate's old home. It is so much larger than any home we have owned I think it would be wonderful. But, we don't have that much money and we don't live in the area...darn!

Bonita said...

LOVE it! Not only is it beautiful, but I think I could actually follow your directions and accomplish this project.

I LOVE it!! Back to the Salvation Army store today at lunch with new visions that I've stolen from you-LOL. Some days I will stand and look at a piece for a good thirty minutes, and never quite figure out what I would do with it. Wish you were close by so we could go together!!!

Have a great moving day (is that an oxymoron)!

I'm so happy to see a shout out for Kimba b/c she is another one of my favorite bloggers!

I'm loving the idea of the burlap on the vanity stool. I already have a creamy colored stool in my bathroom but it sure could benefit from some pretty burlap and a delicious monogram! Thanks for the inspiration!

Good luck on your move Nester! We're all chomping at the bit to see all the pics of the new place!

Becky said...

Wow, that is an awesome transformation!

Alison said...

I am amazed that with moving you still have time to transform something, even something I would have probably not even looked twice at! I love the results, too--love white paint, a stencil, and burlap. I used the same supplies for my daughter's craft area. Here it is! http://thisisnotaroughdraft.blogspot.com/2009/06/and-if-only-it-were-my-size.html

Great makeover -- I'm in the process of spray painting a chair myself these days (between rainy weather and sick 2 year old, these things get delayed) So now I'm really eager to get to the finished product.
I really like J&K+8 and am saddened by what they are going through right now. I really hope they can work things out and lean on God during this time. I also can't believe that no one has bought their old house...if for nothing else the fact to live in THEIR old house :) [oh and that laundry room...simply dreamy!!]

I'm nosy too and blew up the pic a bit on the bathroom. The papers are Bible verses. :)

I never would have thought that piece had potential. WAY TO GO, Kimba. Hmmm. I think the wrought-iron look (flat black spray paint) would be good too!

Too bad they weren't content with that cute little house...

I'm amazed there were ten people living in this house!

Great job on the vanity stool!

Terri said...

I am armed and ready with several cans of spray paint! I have even picked out a few things to spruce up... just waiting for a chance to do it. Good idea to paint on a tarp on the grass... If I would have done that last fall, we wouldn't have giant black rectangles on the driveway! Ooops.

I want to know how I can get my hands on J&K storage system! That would be cool to have.

I will keep praying for your move! Blessings!!

Its sweet-I zoomed in on the picture with the notes on mirror-can make out bible verses.....

Dawn said...

Great transformation - love the burlap.

The notes...

Probably Bible verses like Kate always had in the kitchen.

Tara said...

It turned out great! I seriously need to find a stool to transform to put in my bathroom. Aside from the toilet, there's no where to sit in there!

BTW, I was buying new spray paint today and couldn't find "Heirloom White". What brand is it? I wound up getting Valspar's porcelain white, it was the least creamy of the "not whites".

too funny, just this week i busted out the spray paint and elbow grease to de-brassy my fireplace insert!

I love that! So great! It encourages me to try to paint the ugleeee lamp in my living room!(since it to is brass)

This is great! I am addicted to finding people's old, trashed furniture, so I'm really in love with this post.

Not to plug, but just a couple days ago I tackled a similar project with two outdoor wicker chairs: http://www.keepingupwiththecases.com/2009/06/trash-to-treasure-wicker-chairs.html

I'm just including this because it's very, very relevant. Great job, Kimba!

Awesome makeover on that brass chair! It doesn't even look like the same piece of furniture.

Interesting that the Jon & Kate house is still on the market. I'm so sad for their family. All of those notes on the mirror appear to be scripture verses.

Mary Ann said...

Good luck on the move!
Can't wait to see pics of the new place.

I can see that 3 of the notes on the mirror at Jon & Kates old place are Bible verses.
Too bad it hasn't sold yet.
