Once the kids are back in school, I'm going to repurpose our d.r. as well. In over 3 yrs since we've lived here, we've never used it... and I know we won't. So, it's going to be "my" room- where I can enjoy a magazine or glass of wine while the boys are in the other room playing legos or watching Batman ;)
It's really only been about five years that I've actually used my dining room as a dining room; and we do use it. For a long time, it was a play room when the kids were small; then it was an office for a little while. We do use it --now the breakfast room I wouldn't mind making a little more like a sitting area, but since we have a den AND a living room, I guess that won't happen. Looking forward to seeing yours.

My dining room is more of a pass through to get to the stairs than a room. I have said {and promise myself} that, when we move, if the house has a dining room it will not be a dining room. I'm planning a library for mine - something we will both actually use.
In our old house I used the formal dining room as a living room. The space was much better used that way. I can't wait for Wednesday!

Don't you love it! We never used our dining room space and love it better now! We also feel it gets used a lot more. Ours is a family style room, with some toys, a couch, and a movie theater we can use too. We actually hid our screen under the curtains and pull it down with the projector when we want to watch a movie. I am now a firm believer in using every space in your home, if its not being used, than why not transform it so it can be used. Great post, and I'm sure many will get inspired.

How big is this house? It seems to have many a rooms. And all beautiful!
You know, it is so interesting. We've been looking for a 4 bedroom house and it is virtually impossible.
Most homes that have been built in our area over the last 20 years are 3 bed/2bath and a formal dining room.
Creative uses of the formal dining room space is something I've been thinking of. This weekend, I priced french doors on the internet and it looked like at Home Depot they were about $300 (yikes!).
Love the picture and usage of yours. One great thing about using that space as a living area is how it usually opens into the living room or kitchen.
Anyhoo-would love to hear more of your thoughts on creative usage of this space sometime! You are great :)!

If you'll better use it as a sitting area, who cares?! My parents have a formal living room that no one ever goes in--never made much sense to me. Why not use the space in a way you love?

About a year ago, I flipped my LR and DR...and now I use both rooms all the time! Why not... Your home should work for YOU!
The dining room now has ample room for 10...or, if I use 2 round tables, 20 (we entertain large groups). And it faces the beautiful pool/woods view. The living room/sitting area is cozy...room for a sofa and 2 chairs. The sofa backs up to the window where I can look out over my garden and the street. It's so peaceful! The pups love watching out the window for their 4-legged friends, too.

I do have a question for you, a while back you posted 2 paint swatches (one you used, the other your sister used) One was Oyster Bay the other "Something" Sage. Anyway, I have tried several blues for an enclosed back porch and can not for the life of me find a color I like. I think I would love that Oyster Bay blue color but my Lowe's or Home Depot won't pull it up to find a color match and that is pretty much the only option I have to go for paint (other than Wal-Mart). We don't have any specialty paint stores like SW anywhere near. Do you have the paint formula for it? Thank you so much.

YOurs is pretty. Mine is a disaster, an office space for hubby who apparently does not know how to use a filing cabinet. I was thinking of putting black out shades on the french doors looking in.
I really love how you put the plate rack on the door slats.
Also, where do you get your slipcovers from? Are they made to go with the couch or is it a tie back to fit kind?
Do you know the name of the color on your shutters? It's perfect! It looks similar to your armoire, but maybe not exactly the same.
