Welcome to day 5 of 31 Days to a Better Dressed Nest. If you are new here or if you are old here and not paying attention, we are taking the month of October and talking about quickish, easy ways to freshen up our homes before the holidays.
Today, let's paint something. Anything. With any kind of paint that you have.
This yard sale table was painted with spray paint. No, I didn't prime it or sand it. You don't have to email me to ask me for sure if I sanded it or primed it. I promise, I just found a pretty color, took it outside on plastic bag and hit it with a few coats. Within an hour I loved it all over again. It was an inexpensive table, I don't spend time trying to perfect inexpensive items. My time is valuable. And so is yours.
You can't paint everything with spray paint but you can use it for lots of things. I use spray paint for small tables, rocking chairs and wood chairs, empty frames, lamps, chandeliers. Don't use spray paint for the top of your dining room table. It probably won't turn out the way you want it and you will want to hurt me.
I painted this chandy with red spray paint.
You can also use those little bottles of acrylic paint. They are less than a dollar and you can use them to update photo frames, mix them together to paint that door you hang on the wall. They have a super flat finish unless you spray the finished item with polyurethane so I like to use them on things that look good with a rough finish.
This red frame was painted with acrylic paint.
I was sick of these flimsy "wood" cabinets in our guest bath. So I got out whatever paint I had laying around {from the armoire project} and in an hour I had a new looking bathroom. No, I did not prime or sand. I used BEHR paint plus primer in one. Two coats. Here's my lazy girls guide to painting cabinets.
If you've been putting a big project off like I did, take my advice, you'll be glad you did it once it's done. I waited 4 years or so to finally paint this armoire. My only regret, not painting it the day we got it. I was dreading all the "time" it would take. It cost less than $40 to paint and was done in a few hours that was spread out over 24 hours time.Same with the table. It's funny how we put off painting something that we can't stand for fear that we will ruin said thing that we already hate how it looks. Why are we all such ridiculous perfectionists? Save your worry for things that actually matter.
Some of you are paintaholics. You are professionals at painting your walls, experimenting with new colors and not afraid to change it up with paint. For you, your assignment is to finish that paint project or tackle the one you have been hoping to start.

For those of you that when you hear me talk about painting something, start telling yourself that you will not be doing that because you "don't know how to paint" or your husband is too busy to paint for you or, you aren't rich so you can't paint or, you might ruin that frame that's cracked and in your garage with cocoons all over it if you paint it--I'm talking to you.
Paint something. Anything. You can do it! It doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful.
If you want to paint a wall and you never have, here's a little video
PS:
I never use a fresh roller pad for the second coat--if I even paint a second coat
If the color is light and I do a good job with the first coat, sometimes I skip a second coat
It rarely takes me more than a gallon to paint a room--unless it's a big room
Now be gone, and paint!
If you missed the previous 31 Days posts:
Day 1: Give something away
Day 2: Move something
Day 3: Utilize plants
Day 4: Add an element of surprise
And check back later today, I've got an announcement.

Nester,
Thank you for the inspiration. My favorite tip in this is one you didn't even say, but it is in your pictures. You lined your paint tray with aluminum foil.(the picture with the bathroom cabs getting painted.) I love that and am so glad that I found that tip. I can use that.
Thanks,
Tasha
Well, now I have to come back later. I feel like I'm living in the nest lately. I think I'm gonna go paint my dining room table now...
I had a feeling this one was coming. I paint something nearly every day. Spray paint, brush on, whatever, it's all a wonderful way to transform anything!
I painted a wooden candlestick yesterday (among a dozen other things). It ended up being a Nesteresque robin's egg blue. Loving it!
I have a few projects that need painting and have been working on my bathroom-painting the walls and two hanging cabinets. I LOVE how it looks!

i can't wait to paint my armoire & all the ugly brass chandeliers at my new house- unfortunately, i can't do those until i get done painting all the walls! literally EVERY surface needs to be re-painted. and i like painting, but it's getting a little tedious! you've been my inspiration for tons of projects i'll be undertaking at our new house- thanks for sharing your ideas!

Isnt it wonderful how a little paint can totally change the look for a room!! Great picture ideas!!
Love this, Nester! It kind of drives me crazy when people say they can't paint something because they don't want to "ruin" it, but they hate it the way it is. Make sense? Not really. :-) I'm all for a good paint job on whatever strikes you. You can always repaint... Love this post.

I love to paint - and I love to paint walls. It's mildly relaxing to me. Unfortunately I'm a renter with no walls to be painted. Although I do have a lamp - and a mantle. Maybe I should tackle those.
I really want to paint our Adirondack rocker kelly green. Maybe this will give me the push I need to actually do it!
That red Chandelier is really crazy pretty!! I love paint, if something doesn't want to be painted in my house it had better hide itself!
Again, great series! Janell
Great post you have here...sure hope it will inspire those who think they can't paint. Sounds like I am a paintaholic...painting today! Hope you have a great week.
Blessings,
Linda
We are in the process of painting out entire house. We bought it a year ago, and all the walls were a builder grade beige. Now we have sunshine yellow, apple green, robin's egg blue and mushroom. It's colorful, and it's fabulous!
Perfect! I am a painter...I have painted and repainted all of the walls (and ceilings) in our home over the last 7 years. Love paint...now I am finally going to have black cabinets in my laundry room!
Great series and great post!
Tamera @doubledelight
I did spray paint something this weekend {post coming out later on that} and I have chairs that I have been putting off. I have the fabric for the seats, I have my free quart of Glidden paint ~ it's just a matter of doing it already. I was just thinking about them, again, this weekend and will probably start one evening this week.
Painted my laundry room this weekend! It took two coats to make it look even and pretty but it was worth the effort. Actually hung a chandelier in there too. I have to put the final touches on it and then will post later this week.
We just bought a house and will spend a lot of next week painting the entire interior. Thanks for the tips! :)
Is it weird that I sometimes fantasize about eating paint because I love the color so much? Your armoire color makes me hungry.....
:-)

Oh man. I'm intimidated by painting - mostly b/c I've never really done it. But there are partial cans of paint all over our new (old) house. So maybe I can crack one open and try something with my new mailbox (old breadbox).
Preaching to the choir here. I loooove paint, heck, I even love paint swatches. I could sit and stare at them for hours...like baseball cards or something :).
Great series!
Nester,
I started reading your blog over a year ago. It sparked my creative bug like I never knew I had. I was having a hard time coming up with a style I liked for our home. I wanted something homey but yet classy. After following your blog I have discovered what I like. I also have a new hobby of finding junk (junking) and redoing furniture. I have a somewhat big house and didn't have the means to furnish it all without taking money for more important things. I have transformed several things and made them my own. I'm really proud of the items I have gotten so cheap and have made new again. I want to thank you for your blog and for helping so many of us stay on a realistic buget and enjoy our homes even more.
Blessings,
Katie
Thanks for the great inspiration and motivation. I started touching up all our scratched and dented trim (I also have 3 boys) back in July. Now that it is rainy and cold I will finish the upstairs.
How did you know I just finished painting? Yep. Below the chair railing in my dining room is now a beautiful crisp white instead of two tones of ugly colors. It's amazing how much happiness one gallon of paint can supply.
OH my word, you make me want to get out and start some paintin'! I love your easy, breezy approach to decorating! Your home is stunning, but I think even a not-so-good-decorator like myself can pull off some of your brilliant ideas!
What a blessing you are!
Kristen
PS Love chandy for chandelier!! LOL!
Well, I unfortunately am going to wait on this one. I am in the process of acquiring a cabinet for my office to store all the craft supplies that are laid about. I am, however, going to paint that cabinet when I get it!
Too fun! I am with you on painting...only it is pouring outside and the spray paint would not do what it's supposed to do--stick! As soon as that sun comes out...so does the paint! I DID pull out my handy dandy sewing machine this morning. I might even post what I made! (Cut and Paste Pillow! Kindergarten teacher style!)
Hugs!
susan
I whole heartly agree with you! I think starting with a frame is an excellent idea-by mastering something tangible, it gives a boost to tackle a bigger project.
I hope everyone trys this assignment. I LOVE how easy, fast and rewarding paint is! good post!!
I am in love with the painted armoire! You have no idea how much of that pine funiture we have floating around our house! I have wanted to paint it forever but my husband is incredibly against the idea. I think after a few years of whining about how I no longer like the rustic pine look, I have worn down and he could not care less......so long as there is no work for him required. hahaaha
I am doing a 31 Days To......... on my blog starting this week, where I follow your tips(linking back to here of course) and see how my home is transformed. I can't wait to paint my armoire for my "paint something" step. Thanks for the inspiration and I look forward to the rest of the "31 Days..."

I love this series. Great tips!! I recently painted a lamp base with acrylic craft paint. Came out great! And you know what else will make it shiny after you paint it? Mod Podge! I painted the lamp with brown craft paint, then painted on the shiny Mod Podge to make it look better. :-D
Hubbs and I were JUST talking about painting this morning. He wants to paint the mirror above our entrance table and he suggested red or turquoise. In that moment I knew I loved him ;)
Gussy
Paint is one of my most favorite things. Ever. Especially the spray variety. I have used spray paint with a stone finish to dress up my drab living room end tables and the panel inserts of my armoire to go with it. That always get a cool comment or two from guests. Lovin' this series.
XO,
Pam
P.S. Did you know that spray paint was originally made from fish oil? The guy almost called it Fisholeum instead of Rustoleum. I don't know if it's still made with fish oil or not - but, I thought that was kind of interesting.
A girl of my heart! Have a great week. TTFN ~Marydon
Ahhhhh, paint. My kryptonite. Your blog and a few others actually did help me get over my fears of spray painting. I love to spray paint stuff I find at Salvation Army...bigger stuff makes me nervous though. Not so much over whether or not I'll ruin it, but whether it will look awful and then I'll have to scrounge more time to redo the piece.
I think I need to get a tattoo "It doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful." Unless you already have one. I don't want to be too much of a copycat.
Finally painted my kitchen chandy after three years of hating it! Hurray for the joys of paint!
Oh, you Nester, You!
Painting something is always a great idea for a little freshness around the house. Trying to finish up my den right now. Then off to do kitchen and laundry room, I've got projects out the wazoo right now!!!!!!
I feel inspired! I have been putting off a project of repainting an old bedroom set because "it's going to take so much time". It's a twin bed, dresser, mirror, desk and hutch that I scored at a garage sale. Now I see I have no excuse because it doesn't have to be perfect and it sure as heck isn't going to paint itself!

A girl after my own heart. I keep a full supply of spray paint handy!
Your blog is amazing and I love every bit of it. I am new to blogging and yours is among my top 5 blogs.
Please check out my new blog at
www.thepaintedhome.blogspot.com
Thanks, happy spraying!
Thanks for the inspiration! I paint a lot of little things...all the time. I just run out to the garage and throw something on a cardboard box and start painting it..but I HATE our orangy-wood dining table and this has given me the inspiration I need to just paint it already! :) Thank you!!
Painting is the thing around my home lately. Last month we painted the family room, and this coming weekend we do the dining room. I'm right on target.
I never thought of using those little bottles of acrylic paint for smallish projects. Thanks for the idea!
Mary Lou
Painting my armoire {I feel so fancy when I say that word} tonight. After the kids are in bed.
Can't wait to see how it turns out!
Oh dear, I still haven't decided what to paint...a wall, a table, a desk..I'm overwhelmed. I know, I know, just pick something.
I painted my kitchen chairs black. They look great but whenever they bump against the walls, which are beige, they leave streaks! Should I have used polyurethane spray over it?
We are moving (to the South!) and will be renters once again. I've been scared that we won't be able to paint -- I'm a total paint things and be adventurous kinda gal. However, I've always shied away from spray pain b/c I thought you had to do all the falderal along with it (priming, sanding). So excited to try out some new stuff once we move (a month away!).
P.S. Your chalkboard vinyl also made me very relieved about being a renter. :)
I am so glad you said that. I needed a boost to get going on a paint project I have wanted to do for 2 years now.
I'm trying to get the courage up to paint and distress my coffee table in our living room. After seeing the dresser done for the giveaway last week, I've been chewing on this idea. Maybe I just need to take the leap...
Too funny! I was going to paint something today that I had been putting off and finally did it --- before I read your blog post. :) And I spray painted something last week so I'm on a painting roll! I have plans to Rub 'n Buff the frame of a mirror so watch out! :D
Nester,
I so like your "imperfectionist" painting strategy! I discovered your blog last week, and I've been enjoying it very much. I can't wait for my husband to go out of town so I can paint something. He is most definitely not an imperfectionist, but he is always sweet when he gets off a ship, so he'll let it go.
Thanks for such a great blog!
Lynn
I
My fabulous husband just bought me a paint sprayer, so now, all my old paint is spray paint! I'm super excited about the possibilities. And I don't sand either.
Long time viewer, first time commenter. I love this "31 days" series. Please do more like these! They totally inspire me to get off my lazy butt and nest my house.
Would you have a picture of the completed guest bath cabinets you could share? Would love to see it!
Now I'm so inspired to do this. I think I'll paint my vanity tonight if the new master-of-the-house-who-demands-adoration-from-all decrees that I can. Oh, and I want to move all our armoires with socks--(does that really work? I cannot convince my husband) are wool/ cotton blends or acrylic better? ;)
Hi, my name is Cindy and I'm a paintaholic! But, am not here for recovery. Thank you for helping me continue my addiction! This was an excellent post. I spray the same things that you spray and roll or brush the others. Not to big on the priming...the reason being...I might repaint in the next few years! I've got my big hutch, it's gonna be turqoise (or HOWEVER you spell it). Thanks for a little more motivation. You're just the best for keeping me from recovery from my paintaholism. That's a good thing as far as I'm concerned!
Nester! You are so fun and awesome! I love to read your commentary in every post. You really are wonderful and inspiring! I know I am not horrible at this...but I would love to get better at changing things up and painting more things to make them new again. I have a list a mile long of little projects I want to do...all sitting on the back burner!I want to be more adventurous with my house too! Thanks for the ideas!
OK, Nester, I started painting my grey samples on my wall! Here's a tip - I thought it would be a long trial period, so I moved my lareg picture frames to paint the sample swatches. That way, if I take too long, the paint swatches can be easily hidden behind pics if company comes over!
Hubby still thinks it's too dark so I might lighten it up a bit.
Pics to come on my blog!
You got me with that comment on the cracked frame in the garage covered in cocoons, just the giggle I needed!
Last year we painted our kitchen cabinets black after I saw the fabulous look your sissy achieved by doing the same. She had me at "the way black cabinets make the black dishwasher almost disappear." It took my hubs a good forever to get the 28 doors and drawers done, but I didn't care because I didn't have to do it and we love it now!
HAY! You didn't show us the "after" pic of the flimsy wood cabinets in the guest bathroom.
(hint, hint)
I'll wait.
I just had to let you know that I went out Memorial Day weekend in search of "Tobacco Road" paint. Thanks to all the commenters on your blog post this spring, I managed to get it mixed at Home Depot. Since then, I have painted almost every room in my house with it. We just did the family room last weekend. I cannot thank you enough! I absolutely love the color! It looks a little different in each room because of the lighting, but it really warms up the house. Thanks a bunch! Now I need to go paint some picture frames! :)
Paint the easiest way to change a mood or reinvent an item. and really the cheapest way to update something. Black spray paint ... my favourite.
