It's not too early to prepare for the Christmas season. And for me and you, here at Nesting Place, that means prepare your home and any Christmas decor. Every year I try to mix up my decor just a little so it feels fresh and new and fun. Here are my guidelines:
Use what you have.
Trust me, I bet you have some fantastic items around your house that can be used to decorate your home. Shop the house and don't just look for the traditional red and green decorations. Maybe that means getting out some old keepsakes that you love. I've hung everything from letter initials, my grandfather's baby booties, silver spoons, nests, framed photos, my boys baseballs, shells, bird houses... on my tree. You can tie a red ribbon around just about anything and it suddenly becomes a Christmas Decoration! And hey, if purple is your favorite color, you can make purple Christmasy too. Add in in some silver and white bows and greenery and you'll have a very regal Christmas.
Aim for a Cohesive Look.
Even though your decorations may vary from delicate glass ornaments to the paper and Popsicle stick creations your children make, you can pull it all together. Some people are gifted at putting everything they have together in one room and making it work. For me, I try to group like things together in certain rooms or areas of my home.
I'm putting all my white, fur and neutral items in our front little sitting room. The traditional Christmas ornaments and red and green will be in our family room, and the boys like to have all of their hand made ornaments and brightly colored stuff on the little tree in the playroom. If I had a collection of angels I would group them all together and if I had a snow machine, that would go in my back yard.
Every year I get rid of a few things that I'm done with. And every year, I budget a little money for a few new items. They don't have to cost much. Sometimes it may be a little ornament that catches my eye {one year it was a clip on bird} sometimes it's an antique white Christmas Tree that I found at a yard sale for $5. Tomorrow, I'll show you a few other items I've added to my ever changing Christmas arsenal.
Last year's fur wreath layered on my painted blue shutters hung with Christmas ribbon. And I put a little hot glue on the back of the starfish. He should pick right off at the end of the season. There's no red, and no green in my front room but it's looking quite festive. I'll show you more soon.
As you go through your Christmas decor--get rid of anything you haven't used in a few years. Group like things together. And see if you can incorporate something that is decidedly NOT Christmasy into your decor and make it work. It just might be your favorite Christmas Decoration.

My dear friend, Kimba has a new ebook out today: A Very Kimba Christmas. It's got 5 easy projects that you can do without a huge commitment. She says it's the next best thing to having her come make your Christmas decor for you. I've had a chance to look at it and it's so well put together, funny and easy to follow. You will be inspired. And, it's only $8!

I've been thinking for the last couple of weeks that I ought to go buy some new Christmas stuff, but I've decided to re-think that and see what I've got first! I KNOW that I have a bazillion strings of white lights, so many that some of them have never even been removed from the box (yes, as a matter of fact, it WAS a really good sale)! I think I'll try to find a way to use those instead of spending money for decor that I would rather use for gifts. Thanks Nester-I needed a gentle reminder to use what I've got instead of worry about what I haven't got!
I'm so glad you inspired me to pull out the Christmas things earlier this year.
Starting with the winter stuff, all the true "Christmas" things will come out soon.
Off to check out Kimba's book now!
Great advice! I always try to start thinking about how I will decorate for the holidays about this time of year. I find if I have some sort of plan it makes decorating much more enjoyable. Every year I seem to get rid of things I no longer can use and purchase a few new things.
One of my favorite tricks I use is to take pictures of what I did the previous year. I sometimes have a hard time remembering exactly how I used things. By taking pictures of the decorations that I really liked I make sure I recreate the areas of my house that really turned out spectacular.
I love the sparkly house (church?) under the cloche~perfection! Such beautiful, neutral colors you chose...
These are great tips!! Thank you. :)
Great tips. Yes, I think of all the years this is the one to use what you have. Love all the ideas. Hugs, Marty
I, too, try to buy at least ONE new item for Christmas. I have a tiny tree that I love to just load down with Christmas cheer. Most of the items on my tree have special memories and I wouldn't take a million dollars for them...Well, wait a minute......
Everything looks so pretty! I don't know what to do for this year. I know it's definitely time to purge my xmas decorations. I think half of my stuff in storage IS xmas decorations and I know if've outgrown some of the stuff. The white and creamy looks real dreamy (like my rhyme?). I think I need to go for calm and neautral.
Great inspiration!
Love the white fur wreath with starfish!
You are right...tie a BOW around anything you love & it becomes a celebrated part of Christmas!
You home is lovely!
Looking forward to participating in your Christmas Tour of Homes! Yeah!
This is a good idea. I always forget what I have, then start going crazy looking at the new stuff out there wanting to buy it all. Then, once I get out all my stuff from I realize I still have a lot of stuff I like. I love the feathery wreath!
Thank you so much for the tips! I don't have much yet in the way of decorating but I know I don't want -ordinary off the shelf- I'll be on the lookout for things I love and are not confined to Christmas only!!
As always - love your ideas - I try to move things around and along and it saves money and creates a new look as you say! Thanks, Jennifer
Hey girl--
You have my tongue hanging out to get my Christmas on. I like to leave the house decorated for Thanksgiving through Thanksgiving Day. . . but this year I've realized that I can get started with making my Christmas decorations! So that's what I'm doing. I won't deck the halls 'til after we've eaten the turkey, but I'm going to have things ready to roll before I ever make the first pumpkin pie! Thanks for the head start.
I just bought Kimba's ebook--isn't it great? And so exciting for her.
A tiny bit of excitement for me today, too--I just published my 100th post, so I'm celebrating with a giveaway. Stop by if you have a chance and enter! I think you'd like the prize. :)
OH yeah!! THanks for reminding me of your fun and awesome fur wreath. I LOVE Christmas!
I absolutely am with you on this {although I don't think I've ever not been with you on one of your posts}! Last year I went through some decorations that I hadn't used in the previous two Christmas' and got rid of them ~ chances are they weren't going to be used last year either. I also like to pick up a couple of new things each year ~ sometimes it's something needed like lights for the tree (because the electrical sparks are pretty, but I feel better having newer lights). I usually always get one or two new ornaments that "say" something about my family or what is going on in our lives at the moment.
I love that fur wreath with the star fish! I'd want to leave it up all year!
Your post today made me excited about Christmas decorating!! I was wondering - what exactly is the Christmas Tour of Homes and how does it work??
Can you give more details? I don't want to miss it!!
I think people should always be re-evaluating their Christmas decorations and getting rid of some. Sometimes old decorations just look old ... not fresh and festive.
Oooh, every time I see your Christmas posts I want to run home and decorate! My husband wants to wait until the day after Thanksgiving to put up the tree, but I'm considering doing an all-white flower arrangement in the dining room sooner.
Love the fur wreath, by the way!
I'm always trying to rethink what I have! It sure saves money and makes things fresh and new, but I usually do save some extra cash for some clearance/thrift/yard sale finds too!
And thanks for stopping in to visit today!
That wreath is so pretty. My daughter and I choose Christmas colours as a scheme and then stick to it to bring a cohesive look to the house. It works really well :)
I wonder if you bought my Nannie's antique white tree? Does it lean several degrees to the right? ;) She finally got rid of it about 5 years ago. Who knew white trees would come back in style? I remember growing up in the 80s...my dad hated her white tree with the matching turquoise ornaments that perfectly went with her turquoise rug. I love the way they've updated white trees!! They can be so cute now.
I'm excited for Christmas, and I'm looking forward to getting inspiration from you!
YES, it DOES lean to the right!
But I just bought it a few months ago at the Lake Park yard sale.
Last year I tried to convince my son AND husband to put all of the construction paper ornaments on a different tree than our main one, but they would have none of it. Sigh....one of these days I'm going to have more than one tree in my house! : )
Btw, sending you pics this week!
Between this post and getting our first snow of the season, I'm ready for carols!
I didn't mean to post the previous comment anonymous, just hit the wrong button!
I did a big purge of holiday decorations this fall. I brought some to the consignment shop and some to Goodwill. It really feels good to pare down and I made $40.
The holiday magazines are out in the stores this week. Martha Stewart Living has a Christmas tree decorated with colorful, glittered sea shells. Very fun.
Red Door Home: I take pictures of how I do holiday decorations, too. (Come to think of it, so does the Nester!)
Ah you Americans are early with your Christmas decorations!
But I couldn't agree more with your philosophy on it (as if I ever would not agree with you). Like so many things it is important it is not about the decorations but about the meaning.
I keep on buying one or two decoration for Christmas every year. This adds something new to my decoration and i use my old decoration every time. So decoration stuff keeps on increasing year to year.
Nice post as for me. It would be great to read a bit more concerning that topic.
BTW check the design I've made myself High class escorts
Oh girl, I can't even think about Christmas yet. LOL
You're just so on top of it all!
I'm so happy for Kimba - she did a fantastic job!
Happy Tues.!
Here's my whine......(and I really mean I love your blog...so don't take this personal...)
What about Thanksgiving.... personally...it irritates me that all my favorite home decor blogs are already heavy on the Christmas decor.....and some have been at it since sometime around October....or even before...sigh...
Christmas gets earlier and earlier it seems and any good Fall/Thanksgiving decor is all becoming impossible to find
I wish people/stores would keep the seasons together and stop jumping the gun.... just IMHO...I'm cranky about timing ;-) --- we're still drinking pumpkin spice latte's enjoying the fire with our fall decor, turkey's, feathers, pumpkins and all sorts of delicious squash and funky gourds....looking forward to a very homey Thanksgiving BEFORE winter and Christmas.
AMY ---who totally loves your blog anyway ;0)
Great Christmas decorations you have in here. This is a great info.

hey my friend, i know this post was for me! thanks, you rock my world!
I love the white theme for this year. I can't wait to see the rest of your front room. So inspiring! Oh, and that fur wreath is TDF!!
Hey, just wanted to say thank you for your message. Especially right now that I feel so...uhm...broken?
Thanks again for your kind words.
Excellent and well said advice! I so appreciate your words of wisdom. Thank you.
