How do you decorate your Christmas tree? For most of us, it's not a matter of deciding what aisle of ornaments to purchase. In a perfect world, it would be fun to get to buy hundreds of dollars worth of the latest Christmas decor ever year, but that's completely unrealistic. We just want to know more of how to make our measly $10 go the furthest when deciding what to buy. And what we can do without.
Here's what I've learned over the years when it comes to lights and ornaments:
Lights:: You Don't Have Enough and Neither Do I
Lights are highly important to your Christmas tree. If you only have the money for either lights or ornaments, buy the lights and hang Sharpe markers, bras, cans of soup, mail--anything else on your tree. No lights=no magic. I've never seen a tree with too many lights--have you? Basically, make sure your tree has lots of lights and be sure to tuck some in deep close to the trunk as well as on the outside branches. If you really want to drive us light lovers crazy with lust for your tree, add in a few strands of C9s and sit back and enjoy the compliments.
I kept it short for the lights because I could write a book about ornaments. Get comfy and grab some coffee because here we go...
Ornaments:: To Theme or Not To Theme?
Trees want a theme. I'll be the first to admit that the theme can be that you don't have a theme. That's fine but make sure it's obvious that's your theme, the non-theme that is. If you say you don't have a theme but then your tree looks like you started 3 themes, the theme is simply confused. You'll wonder why your tree looks weak and not put together. The only way to pull off the non-theme theme is to fill your tree with all sorts of mixes of ornaments and be purposefully non-themey.
If you are like me when you hear the word theme you have instant visions of a Sesame Street Nursery complete with wall murals of Oscar the Grouch and plastic beach buckets filled with real sand adorning a beach house. That's not a theme, that's an easy, weird way out. We are talking direction, goal, purpose--that is the kind of theme we are going for, not some category that we have to slave over to fit into, but rather some guidelines to help direct us on what should and should not go on our tree to make it work. A theme frees us up to hunt for what we can use, it doesn't box us in.
Did you ever imagine someone could talk like this about an ordinary Christmas tree? I could preach all night about it.
Here are some themes that I've used:
The theme for this tree is bright colors. I used inexpensive, bright, shatter proof ornaments and lots of colored ribbon. My boys added in any and all hand made penguins, drawings and toys that they wanted. The more color the better.
Wintry/shiny/natural/browns/whites/nesty/blues
{I never said that your theme needed an official name}
This is my new old tree. My $5 yard sale beauty. A few years ago I had the bright idea to buy brown ornaments. Guess what? Brown ornaments don't show up on green trees. But they look great on white trees. Back to the theme. For this tree I had to shop the house. I looked for anything with browns, silvers and whites.

Besides the brown castoff ornaments from years gone by, I also had a few tiny birdhouses that I had collected over the years. Some had a string to hang them, some I simply sat on a sturdy branch. There is no rule that says everything on the tree must have been purchased from the ornament aisle. The best tree decorations are the ones that mean something to you--usually they don't have a neat little hook hole to hang it from.
I remembered that I had a bunch of tiny nests with eggs glued in them so I grabbed those and scattered them around the tree just tucking them onto the branches.
Really, it's just a mess of my favorite stuff that looks good together. A bird that a friend sewed for me, a tiny framed photo of one of my boys, anything silver I could find, random white angel ornaments.
My favorite item is this pair of felt baby shoes. They belonged to my grandfather. I adore this tree. It cost me all of $5 to decorate {I had forgotten that I had brown balls packed away from a few years ago and bought $5 worth at the grocery store} and it is full of meaning and memories. Since we have two other trees my boys don't mind if I keep this one pretty.
Our family tree has a theme too. Red. Red is the theme. Any thing in our home that had red in it was fair game to try on the tree.
Here's a very limited list of things you can try on your tree
- frames
- wooden letters
- wooden spools
- flowers
- bells
- hearts
- toys
- ribbon
- silverware
- shells
- burlap ripped up
- crystals
- tiny mirrors
- feathers
- tassels
- tiny baskets
- small wrapped boxes
- paper chains and paper snowflakes
If your tree is looking a little lack luster shop the house and see what you can add in.
Remember this red floral stuff from here and here? Now I tucked it into the tree--it made a HUGE impact. I just use the same few items over and over again--are you sick of seeing it all?
Shop your house, define a theme and ruthlessly search for anything that could possibly work. Promise yourself you will give every idea a chance. Anything that has a remote possibility of actually working must be at least put on your tree for a few minutes. Remember, your home's return policy is very generous, so give anything a try and see if you like it.
You really can use anything to decorate a tree, right Gina?
Does your tree have a theme?
What's the most nontraditional thing on your tree?

Great post! I futzed with my tree for hours the other day, and I put... get ready... four thousand lights on my tree this year. It's a 7 ft, clearance after Christmas bought, $20 Martha Stewart tree (originally $199) and I LOVE it. I have a few ornaments and some ribbon, but the lights is what makes it come to life.
Can't wait to see what mistreatment you do for your skirts, I made a tutu for mine!
Have a wonderful day!
We just put our Christmas tree up last night! Our theme is red with some white. White lights, red berry garland and an assortment of red and white ornaments. I have a number of snowman, stars and angels. It just ended up that way. I will be posting a litle later.
How in the world did I miss that??? I thought I never missed a post. Ok... going back to look!
OH! I get it! And I thought I'd missed a post - don't give me heart attacks like that!
I actually let the girls make mine, it's part of my attempt to release control and make more memories!
Hugs!
I wrote/preached about tree skirts yesterday--it will be posted tomorrow--don't hate me because I'm opinionated?!
Yes, yes, YES!! Nester, you are my hero! And I'm so glad to see that I'm not the only one with more than one tree...
The theme for the tree in our family room is the "non-theme" tree - colored lights, and all ornaments that were ours as children, the boys' ornaments from each year & our family ornaments from each year. Love it!
The ones in the other rooms are specifically themed - a "family pictures" tree with pictures from the last year in black & white & our initials, a snowflake tree, etc.
Love your white tree; I'll be on the lookout for one now.
Also, just wanted to say - most of my decorations/ornaments have either come from Goodwill or the after-Christmas clearance at Hobby Lobby. It's fun to see what can be found!
Love this.
Our theme this year is red & gold mixed with all of our family collected ornaments. The kids love pulling out theirs every year & I just can't say no.
Oh, and if you get a chance - would you show up your decorator's table filled with apothecary jars that's next to your white tree? :-) Pretty please?
your just awesome! soon as i am off of this computer, im going room to room and filling up a box with stuff that might work on my tree. lol. i was a little sad about my tree with only 10 ornaments because i spent most of my "FIRST CHRISTMAS TREE" budget on lights (1800 to be exact, & and still not enough!) but you open my eyes, as well as others too i am sure. think out side the box, or in this case the "ornament isle". :)
xoxo jessica
You're right on about the lights. Ornaments are fun, but lights are magic. Wal-Mart has their brand of lights for $2.00 per 100-light strand. So if you wanted to give some extra oomph to your tree, you could spend $10 and get 500 extra lights. Or you could buy a few ornaments. Guess which one makes more difference?
Great post!
That car tree is just so creative and fun!
I hate white trees but I love the one your posted...the bulbs and everything is so very pretty!
you amaze me at every visit!
Do stay up all night?
sandy toe
I don't really think our tree has a theme. And I'm okay with that! LOL We have a mixture of sentimental ornaments from our childhood and vintage glass ornaments. (and sorry about deleting the first comment, I hate typos!)
o, one more thing. ANYONE have any ideas on where to get ornaments for super cheap, besides goodwill (already cleaned out 3 goodwill's in Raleigh)
What an adorable post! It's so appropriate right now with everyone just getting their trees up right now and planning their decorations. I agree with you completely. Love your white tree! You would never know it didn't cost alot. Too funny about your advice on the lights! The racetrack themed tree at the end is a hoot!!
This year I'm keeping it simple with just 2 tree's, stockings on the fireplace and a wreath on the door. Oh and a few decorations/lights outside. I'm not unpacking the what seems like 20 boxes of decorations or putting the nesters fancy garland up this year! The theme in our house is keep it simple! Our hardwood floors are getting torn up from a water leak sometime in the next few weeks which is one reason of keep it simple:)I'm very excited for the end result of my new distressed wood floor and who cares if the house is all torn up for christmas...we might be opening gifts in the midst of concrete and dust in the kitchen but really what a great excuse to not have to get all caught up in the hussle and bussle right?!!!
I love this post! I love Christmas trees. I will be reading this all day, so when you check your analytics (or whatever you use to check that stuff) you'll see multiple visits from moi! Beautiful! Did I say I love this post?
"In a perfect world, it would be fun to get to buy hundreds of dollars worth of the latest Christmas decor ever year". That would never be me. I love Christmas and all the decorations, including Christmas trees. I would never be happy going out and buying the latest Christmas decor or NEW ornaments. Our tree has meaning to us. It is full of ornaments we've collected over almost 28 years (feb!) of marriage. The crystal bell (our first year married) is one of my most treasured ornaments. I also collect old tinsel and scrap ornaments. We have many glass ornaments that represent places, hobbies, things, etc. to us. The pup even has an ornament! I'm not much of a theme person but I guess our tree theme could be vintage or color - it's pretty much pale colors with lots of gold and silver mixed in. I do have a few ornaments I've made from vintage sheet music. We have a nest or two on our tree too! I like filling in with flowers - it does make a difference. I've also used tulle as a garland - very pretty and very inexpensive.

I love all the trees, they are gorgeous and the race track idea is brillant! Off to buy more lights.
yay! I emailed you my contact info. I love the white & brown tree, your grandfathers shoes add such a great touch!
Our theme is rustic. Lights, lots of wooden and outdoorsy ornaments plus a few homemade. Simple. I'd love to have strings of beads but it's not happening this year. We even have a fleece tree skirt with bear on it! But, I'm considering trying the galvanized bucket like in Country Living this year. We have one from one of Hunter's recent jobs. We'll see how it looks this weekend when we go get our living room "live" tree. I also put antlers in our mantle garland. :)
We also have 3 other small (4 ft or less artificial)trees...our bedroom is just ribbon and balls. Kids is toys on string and felt/yarn garland I made and felt pillow ornaments. Toy room tree is new this year...bought on discount last year after Christmas. It's 3 alpine trees together so I'm thinking on that one. Maybe more rustic?
Love the trees, and what great ideas. I love it when people think outside the box. Crazy about the little blue shoes & bird nest, also the matchbox track as garland...GENIOUS! Lisa
No theme here! My grandma make ornaments for us every year...my oldest is dated 1973! After she died, my uncrafty but great shopping mom bought us an ornament every year. Then we started collecting ornaments from our vacations. Now that I have kids, my sister is continuing the tradition of making ornaments for my kids every Christmas! It's quite the hodge-podge and I love it!
lovely tree! I do themes every year!
one of the cheapest ways to add filler to a tree, is with cookie cutters.
It's true, a cheap box of silver or the vintagey brass or copper colored cookie cutters (hearts, stars, christmas themed) and you can tie a hanging ribbon around them to match your decor and you are done, for cheap.
I have a 2 1/2 year old and a 1 year old. Does anyone have any suggestions for tree decorating with toddlers? At this point we just have very sparse, non-breakable ornaments near the bottom and it's a little sad looking down there. But they pull on everything they can reach because they're very excited. I refuse to gate-off the tree because it's their Christmas too! Should we just live with it and know that in a few years it will be different?
Oh, they each have a tree in their bedrooms too (a 4 foot one). My 2 1/2 year old has a Noah's Ark tree. We have multicolored lights on it and wound a rainbow grosgrain ribbon around it. I found flat pre-painted wooden animals in the WalMart craft department for about $0.50 and glued them in pairs so that the animals are 2 by 2! She absolutely loves touhcing all her animals.
My 1 year old has a sweet little tree covered in white lights, sheer white bows (that are wired on so that she can't pull them off) and lavender glitter non-breakable balls. Its pretty for a baby girl :)
oh, and cheap homemade paper ornaments are great too. here are some that are actually classy!
http://www.remodelaholic.com/2009/12/paper-christmas-decorations-day-1.html
Nester, please don't be mad, I'm copying your bright colors themed tree. I just need more lights, the ribbon and a tree topper! I think the ribbons put it over the top!!! Thanks for the post and the ideas!
That last tree is awesome! My boys would LOVE it! We have two trees...one is full of bright colors and all of the boys homemade crafts and the other is white/silver/and icy blues!
Thanks for this post, I NEEDED it. my 4 year old requested colored lights this year, and we picked some up on sale at target! I am going to try to replicate your bright tree with what we have. Important question, how do you hang garland without it looking like you are suffocating your poor tree?
I love a themed tree! Ours is red/gold/silver/clear. We have oodles of small white lights on it (pre-lit) and then a mixture of red and white C-9's - and you're totally right about the C-9's taking it to the next level. I can't think of anything non-traditional on the tree. We just added more ornaments to our collection every year after they went 80% - 90% off after Christmas. Loved this post BTW! It had some great ideas that I'll be sure to use in the future.
These are very useful...my tree still needs so much help!
I stumbled onto your blog today and just noticed that you're in NC. I'm in Raleigh and I love your blog!
I completely agree about having tons of lights! Our tree has a bizillion white lights, all blown glass ornaments that we add to every year and a drapy cream colored sheet that I wrap around the base. I really love the drapy sheet effect. I use the same ornaments year after year. I really enjoy that.
We have a second tree in our den with all the ornaments we've collected over the years for our son and the ones he made over the years...he's now a 23 year old graduate student! Mom is still buying him ornaments!
A few years ago our house was on a Christmas Tour of Homes in the area. We had three trees that year, one in the living room, one in the dining room, and the little tree in the den. I think there was even a little kitchen tree with gingerbread men and cookie cutters on it. That was fun but too much work.
This year I made a wreath out of thrifted glass balls-it's stuffed full and trimmed with a gorgeous red satin bow. So I guess that would be my answer to how would you spend 10. on decorations. That's about what I've invested in that wreath.
mary
Please do pardon my complete lack of up-to-dateness: What are C-9's? It sounds like something explosive, which frankly the husband and son would ADORE, but it's a bit hard on the cats nerves!
I can assure you it is possible to have too many lights-I have approximately 30 boxes of lights, at least half of which have never been opened-yes, 1,500 feet of white lights that HAVEN'T been used yet. It's scary to think of, really. Our weensy little fiber optic multicolor light tree would fall over if we put ANY lights on it, and I dare not get rid of the thing in favor of something that actually fits the living room because everyone but me loves it! LOL-I give up! Since I have enough lights, I'll take my $20 in my purse and get it some new decor in colors that match the lights already on the tree-it'll be such a happy little tree then!
LOVE LOVE LOVE that brown and white tree!!!
A little theme goes a long way! So right!!
our theme is orange/wasabi green/ white linen/ gold/ dried fruits and nativities
that car tree is great! haha. thanks for sharing
My husband is a firefighter. A couple of years ago I found wooden fire trucks, ambulances and helicopters in the dollar section at Target...screwed in some eyelet rings add a ton of red ornaments and we have the perfect tree for our crazy family!
I love this whole post, Nester - you always crack me up. (The "non-theme theme" paragraph...haha) I can't believe how much I like that white tree....you did an amazing job with it...with the nests and brown ornaments...OOH and the heirloom baby shoes - love it to pieces. My trees have always been covered in glass ornaments...uh, not this year. I have a two year old and a 7 month old....I've had to get creative with baby-proofed trees.
I tend to be "anti-theme" because I want to put up every eclectic paper angel and popsicle stick reindeer my kids made through the years. (They are now 21 and 19!) But I do have an overall "red" theme with my garland and fill-in red balls that unifies it, now that I look at it. There's also a general "rustic" quality to the other bought/gift ornaments I've gotten through the years - wooden rocking horses, tiny nutcrackers, distressed wooden trees and stars with raffia, cinnamon stick and cranberry garland. I LOVE my tree!
As far as unusual items, I like to find wide ribbon in a stripe or plaid that has a "scarf" look to it to wrap around my tree as a garland - then I top it with a red winter knit cap! My tree skirt is a red fleece blanket.
Lights, lights and more lights! I wish I could get my husband to read this. He puts the lights on the tree and every year I wish he would use more. Then there is the colored vs. white battle between me and my kids. I always give in to the colored lights as I have final say in all the rest of the house.
The "un-theme" theme of my Christmas tree is the story of our lives. Our tree holds memories of places we visit, friends, school projects etc. Just like the rest of the house, when you buy something you love somehow it all works together.
Mckinley's Mommy - have you tried Big Lots? I've always had good luck finding ornaments for cheap there.
Oh, one year when my daughter was in junior high, we did a little tree in her room with nail polish and cotton balls and those little foam toe separaters! Hilarious! We just gathered up every bottle of nail polish in the house and attached them with pipe cleaners. Colored lights, of course! It was SO cute!
Our main tree doesn't have a theme ~ except maybe bright and colorful. This year I actually have two additional little trees that I got at Goodwill. One I put in my entry foyer and I made that my kids' tree. {My 19 & 22 year old kids!}. From 1st Christmas ornaments up. In my living room I put the other and I did a fun, whimsical, Dr. Seussy type tree. I love it! All three are different, but I think they all show a part of me/us as a family.
I love your white tree with the brown ornaments and the nests ~ looks great!
Our theme is ornaments collected over the years. For the past few years my sister and I have given each other ornaments reflecting Christ (nativities, crosses, etc.) so that is kind of a sub-theme.
One year I put our old fake tree up in my room with just colored lights and all the Christmas cards we received that year.
Awesome post! I love all the tree ideas. I also put together an entire new theme for my tree this year for $20 from TOP to tree skirt. Made most of the ornaments and I am LOVING the look. Ahla nature down home country. My teen daughter even gave it rave reviews. LOL Plus it was EXCITING to come up with an idea, budget it and make my vision into a reality.
Love your trees!! Our tree is not very theme-y, but if I had to classify it, I'd go with classic Christmas. We have lots of homemade stuff, and wooden toy replicas, so it's super kid friendly :)
Thanks for sharing, you always have the best posts!!
I love C9 lights. My mom still has some that she and my dad bought their first Christmas together (1971) and they still work! The bulbs have been changes many, many times, but the strands still work. Amazing.
Our "theme" this year is red, white and silver. Our tree isn't up yet because we don't put it up until St. Nicholas Eve (Dec 5). I'm chomping at the bit to decorate, but for now I have to be content with my door and scattered decor throughout the house. Your white tree is gorgeous. But you knew that.
Nester, I rarely comment because you always have so many comments that I wonder if you'll actually read mine but this topic is near and dear to my heart so I had to chime in. I have two trees, I have had two trees for many years and I love decorating them. The themes are fun and simple, The "fancy" tree in our foyer is white lights and all our glass, crystal, Lennox and more elegant ornaments along with red roses and some years fresh baby's breath and our "casual" tree is in our family room with colored lights and all our cute ornaments from Hallmark as well as the handmade ornaments we've collected through the years. Both trees are fun, and beautiful and I love having the themes because I have a lot of ornaments.
Lastly, I have to tell you that while in college, I wanted a tree in my dorm room so I bought a small 3-ish-footer and some lights but I didn't have enough money for ornaments so I took all kinds of things from around my room, bottles of nail polish, lipsticks, jewelry, etc. and turned them into ornaments. It was absolutely adorable and very clever, if I do say so myself.
I LOVE your white tree, I wish I could find one for $5 somewhere... have a great day Nester!
I think the favorite themed tree I ever did was a candy tree. It was all about the candy. We hung all kinds of flavored candy canes, mini candy bars, full size candy bars, hot glued hooks to the back of Nerd boxes, bags of Reeses Pieces & M & M's. It was not the cheapest but it was very cool. On a side note: Yellow Labs are capable of sniffing out the cappicinno flavored candy canes, remove them without knocking the tree down & eat them, wrappers and all. I was blaming the kids & they were pointing at their father. I finally caught the dog in the act.
Ten years ago, I decided on a Christmas tree theme of red Santas, preferably handmade. I have purchased most of them at craft fairs. Now I have a darling collection (with one hand painted green and gold Santa to celebrated our GB Packers.) It looks so much better and keeps me from buying a hodgepodge of ornaments I don't need.
P.S. Any tips on stringing lights?
P.P.S. to the Nester: Opinionated is good! That's why we're here.
Love to look at "themed" trees but could never have one. (Well maybe a small one) Our tree tells a story! Ornaments my girls have made over the years. Ornaments my husband and I made as children. Ones from where we have lived. Our proffessions (former teacher & b-ball coach) My mother-in-law gets my girls an ornament every year so when they have a tree they will have a good stock to start with.
Every year, I have visions of doing a themed tree, an all red tree, just snowmen, just santas, etc. Last year I even bought a bunch of pastel colored ornaments and decorations on clearance because we were going to do that this year. We didn't. I just couldn't do it. So we have our traditional colors tree up with all of our ornaments we have collected through the years. It looks pretty I think and well put together if you ask me. :)
I guess my theme is anything my kids would like to put on my tree, which includes strung popcorn and their handmade ornaments. I also often find Barbie and GIJoe among the branches. lol My husband and I buy an anniversary ornament every year. Just a colored ball with the date and our names painted on it, because when we are old and have no kids at home, I want my theme to be: Us. I envision a tree smack dab full of our anniversary ornaments!!
Great post and great looking trees!
Blessings,
Becky Jo
Love this post. Great (and so true) points!
I haven't started decorating yet, but I'm gathering items for a Woodland themed tree this year. Birds, eggs & nests, critters, nuts, acorns, berries, burlap, pinecones, milkweed pods, thistles- I think the thistles are the most ununsual thing I'll be using. Sharp, pokey thistles! But they're gonna be so pretty! (Cranberry red, green and bronze will be the colors among the weeds.)
Next year I'm dreaming of a Kid Stuff tree- Legos, paper chains, strung popcorn, toys, handprints, kid-made ornaments, wooden blocks...
Love the white tree - outstanding! Along the lines of your silver...I have a tree in each of my kids room and in the baby's nursery I decorated it w/ all silver baby cups, rattles, teething rings, silver spoons, etc...it is precious and a happy keepsake/memory too! Merry Christmas!
I am going to go crazy with the lights--The Nester said I could! Thanks!!!
I'm with you on the themes. Yours are just perfect! I may be the last person in blogland to not have my tree decorated yet, but I'm more excited than ever to get home and do it. And my theme this year is letters and numbers.
Decorating our Christmas tree is one of my favorite things to do! I just love how they’re a blank canvas. Your trees are lovely. I like the color scheme you did on the white tree and the car tree is too fun!
I just did a vlog series on my blog where I talked about a few ways to cut cost and have a beautiful full tree. It was my first vlog post :o)
http://domesticprincessintraining.blogspot.com
Each tree has its own theme(or non-theme). There's the white tree with the Gamecock ornaments(garnet&black)with said color feather things tucked in. The 2 in urns(should be for front of house, but kept falling over) are filled with crystal filler and silver&gold letter ornaments. I have only silver, gold, crystal, and white ornaments/decor in the dining room. The family tree is the non-theme all our ornaments from our childhoods til now. Love the handmade ones the best. The kids have their own trees..silver tree with red ornaments for my son and a pink feather tree with green ornaments for the girly-girl.
I do love your white tree with the brown&blue ornaments. Very pretty.
You have made me a white-tree-convert! I LOVE your tree! I also am enjoying your vertical bead on the the main tree. My tree has a red ball, white beads & bows theme. From there, anything goes. I always think it is beautiful because I lay the foundation first of those elements. I also have yards of hand-cut paper doll garland I usually add, but I left it off the tree this year. I love Christmas decor, but only buy stuff after Christmas on clearance, if at all! Blessings!
Great trees, great photos, great tutorial. I actually decorated my tree "with intention" this year instead of throwing the same old ornaments on there. I love it. It makes me smile every time I walk by. AND it was super cheap to do. I'll be posting about it soon.
Great job!
I'm pretty traditional when it comes to tree decor. The main tree is only green and gold. I went with a color theme that just so happens to be the colors of where I went to college. My fav. on that tree are the gold angel wings! Our second tree is our "memory" tree. That is where our meaningful ornaments go and the ornaments we pick up on our travels!
I finally threw away all the half working strands of lights this year and bought the new led ones for the tree. I don't like them. They don't twinkle. I bought the warm white ones and ended up getting three strands of bright white and one strand of warm white so my lights are definitely two different colors. But I already had them on the tree and didn't want to take them off and take them back to the store. Next year I will buy the regular white lights. The led's don't twinkle. They are flat but bright and hurt my eyes to look at them. Yuck.
Thank you again for your great tassel tutorial, I made my first one last week ... and posted about it today :)
http://densdailylife.blogspot.com/2009/12/my-first-tassel.html
Love this! Great ideas, and yes you can decorate a tree with anything! This year we're going with silver and pine cones and maybe some blues downstairs with a colorful kid done tree upstairs.
I remember when my kids were little and into everything that I used a small tree with shatterproof ornaments on them-that was their tree to explore and the other was off limits. It took a few weeks, but they got the hang of it. And then we had two pretty trees to look at.
Great Post - Thanks!
I agree with you 100% about the lights! We have a bigger tree this year and the only thing I added to it was more lights.
-Crystal
This is my favorite post you've ever written! I love Christmas, I love trees, I love decorating, I love tree themes. I have 11 or 12 c-mas trees (yes, I have so many I can't even remember how many I have).
My tree themes:
1. Main tree: non-theme. It holds all of our ornaments from when we were kids, ornaments that have been given to us, and our vacation ornaments (whenever we go somewhere, I buy something to hang on this tree. One day, I hope to have enough to create a vacation tree all of its own).
2. dog tree
3. drum tree (for my hubs the drummer)
4. white bird tree
5. vintage glass ornament tree
6. reindeer tree
7. kitchen tree (candy canes, cookie cutters, etc.)
8. my fave: cardinal tree (red cardinals, vintage chandelier crystals, nests, etc.)
9. halloween tree (it's black. sometimes I even pull it out at c-mas)
the rest don't have themes, just lights and some simple ornies.
I love what you have to say about tree themes. This year, I didn't want to use ornaments since the babies are 20 months old and prone to breaking things. I also didn't want to spend any money. So I found the red and green plaid fabric scraps leftover from the cuff of our burlap stockings and cut that into small strips. Then (after we put the white lights on the tree) I tied the strips around the branches. It's my favorite tree we've ever had. I might get rid of the ornaments and use this instead from now on. Very old fashioned, simple, beautiful and my husband thinks it's "Scottish" which is fun, because that's his ancestry. A few years ago, my mom did a "kitchen" tree. It was just a little table top tree in her breakfast nook with white lights and a bunch of measuring cups, spoons and cookie cutters hanging with red ribbon. So cute!
I adore all of your trees :), but my favorite thing has to be the framed pictures of your kiddos! Love, lOve, LoVe!!! I am totally doing this!
I also have several trees: my kids is also "color" with handmade paper chains and colored lights, and a styrofoam pink-glittered star with silver pipe-cleaners swirls that my youngest made in pre-school as the topper!
Our "formal"-ish tree is full of reds and browns and champagne-y golds and glittered birds and nests and real pheasant feathers (thanks to a hunting trip with Dad!).
Our "family" tree is a complete hodge-podge of every single ornament that my husband and I AND our children have gotten since birth -- yikes -- it's a bit much, I'll admit...time to weed out the not-so-favorites! I think I really could hang my bra on there now and no one would even notice! ;)
Oh, and a tiny tree in a black urn on top of my fridge with silver cookie cutters on it.
I think I'll be going to weed out my family room tree to our very favorites, and add in a couple of framed b&w pics! Thanks! :)
Blessings,
Stacey
Great post, I have a similar post today about how to properly trim a tree. I mentioned your post in my post (hope you don't mind). How clever is the Hot Wheel tracks on the tree! As always thanks for the inspiration!
Best wishes,
Tammy
I don't even remember the last time I actually had a real tree to decorate. I've been in small places with no real good places to place a tree. And I'm in the smallest place I've ever lived (except our 29ft. trailer when we were first married). We're usually other places, so just put up my small fake tree at least. Hoping to someday be in a bigger house that will have a Christmas tree spot. Love this post, though. Cool ideas.
Your trees are beautimous!!! My hubs is going out to buy our big (real) tree today. He promised! No real theme for that one...just LOTS of lights and mostly ornaments we each collected growing up (his mom gave me his box of ornaments when we got married). :)
Funny, I've never really thought about what my theme was...I've just always decorated the way my mom did...I guess it really is a theme though...I would have to classify it as a "Memory Lane" theme.
Our tree has no balls...no garland..(unless that year we get around to making popcorn and cranberry garland)...just gobs of white lights and ornaments we have either collected, or made over the past 11 years. Everywhere we visit that sells ornaments, we get one to remember that time. So we have Disney, Outer Banks, Chicago, Rock City, Destin, etc...And our tradition is that every year we get one new "family" ornament to add to the tree...usually a Hallmark ornament that we all pick. We have our eye on an I Love Lucy one this year because that has become our new fav show to watch together as a family. I also make sure to mark the year somewhere on all of them.
Love the white tree! I saw brown ornaments this year and thought "what?"...now I can see how they would work!
In our foyer, we have a burgundy and gold tree. In our family room, we have a red & gold tree along with our family tree - it's the one we put family ornaments on. Some dating back to when my husband was a child. It's also the only tree with colored lights. In our dining room, we have a turquoise, gold and silver tree (which we are also using as our Jesse tree). Our kitchen tree doesn't really have a theme - just different colored ornaments and white lights. I told my husband I should make ornaments out of silverware for it. The tree in our living room, has no ornaments, just strands of pearl lights. We have a white tree upstairs with pink and pearl ornaments.
We'll put another white tree in our sunroom with red ornaments and I'm undecided about the tree in the bathroom.
My biggest problem, is not enough tree skirts!
I would say my most non traditonal item is lego creations, but with boys in the house that isn't exactly non-traditional! :) You have inspired me to do a teapot tree. I LOVE all things tea, and I have a pretty teapot ornament with a hole in the bottom. I think I'll stick it at the top of a small tree, and hang some other tea-themed ornaments on it as well as some pretty teabags. I'm getting exited just thinking about it!
I have to also say that I have some red bead garland just like yours. Mine are one of my favorite Christmas decorations because they were my Grandma's.
Thanks for another great post! Love you and your words of wisdom! :)
Beautiful decor! You are decorator after my own heart!!!!
Our theme is "change stinks" - meaning we put the same exact ornaments on our tree as the year before, and the year before that, and the year before that...I am so sentimental it's pathetic. Every year Kiddo has a new ornament to put on the tree, and when he's grown and in his own place we'll give him his box and cry our eyes out.
Anyway, putting ornaments on that I've had since I was young means so much to me. Most of the ones we have, though, have been bought in our 14 1/2 years of marriage. Our tree is getting a little full. : )
LOVE this post! The brown/white/silver/gorgeous tree is SO awesome. I love that one. I wish it would match somewhere in my house 'cause I'd be making a twin tree just like it. SO pretty.
Our big and real tree in the front room has no real, purposeful theme. BUT it has than ALL the children's ornaments - ornaments we've gotten them and tons they've made and somehow it all works. That tree even has COLORED *gasp* lights! The LED lights that my husband bought I actually just love. They are so bright! There is a lot of red in that tree and just tons of traditional colors - red, green, etc. It's pretty and I like it. Very family and very homey. :)
The other trees are themed - one is a smaller flocked tree with cardinals and red silk ball ornaments. And I have one more I still have to put up.......I am SO behind!
OH! And a previous poster mentioned the white LED lights not being warm - I do not think they are, either! :( The colored are bright and fun looking, but some of the white ones have a blue-white sterile tone. Blech. :(
What are C9s? I know I don't have enough lights anyway. I'm breaking out in hives about it.
I should so get one of my old, tired nursing bras, spray paint it red and hang it on my tree. Oh, and put glitter on it. Maybe I'll perch it on the top instead of a star. Every tree needs something that pops out right?
Love your wintry/shiny/natural/browns/whites/nesty/blues tree. It's awesome. ANd I'm nervous to see what you say about tree skirts. I've never had one and this year the tree is in a big galvanized metal tub. Please pray with me that it doesn't top over onto one of my children--particularly the smallest who possibly wouldn't survive the imact.
LOVE your trees! I got my current tree on Kijiji last year for FIFTEEN DOLLARS (WOOHOO!!) and my theme this year is A Very Country Christmas. Lots of browns and pale greens and burlap! I might just keep it up till July!

No theme for me, ever! I use every Christmas decoration/orgnament my boys have made throughout the years in conjuction with the ornaments that I buy them each year. They both get one new ornament a year to reflect their main interest that year. I love it and wouldn't trade it for the prettiest themed tree out there. :)
My father's birthday is the week before Christmas, and last year we had his big party (60th!) at my aunt's house. Well, she already had her christmas tree, it just wasn't decorated yet, so we decided to add it to the festivities! Instead of ornaments and a star at the top, we wrapped it in white lights, and then tied blown up happy birthday balloons all over, with a shiny star-shaped helium balloon at the top. The lights sparkled through the balloons, and it was wonderful! We got so many complements!
For Christmas, we just couldn't give up the balloon theme, so changed out the happy birthday balloons for red and green plain ones, and got a new shiny gold star.
The trees that mean the most to me are the ones full of memories. Those ornaments bought each year that a child picked out or that someone handmade and gave you.... Lights and lights and more lights and all the colours always. Thanks for some beautiful pictures and your memories of Christmas past!
I love your white and brown tree!
Our theme for our tree remains the same every year "family life". We have all the ornaments the kids made, some shiny bulbs, and everything from glass soccer balls to wooden colored nutcrackers. The kids love the memory of bringing out their personal ornaments each year.
This year we did add more life to the tree though, we normally do red lights with silver garland. This year we used multi-colored and my husband says every time he looks at it that it is his favorite one we have ever had. We both believe it is because the multi-colors remind us of when we were kids.
The most unique item I have on my tree right now is a silver angel pin that someone bought me for a gift. I don't wear pins, so I put a ribbon in it and it is now an ornament every year.
Our theme is family memories. My hubby and I started a tradition of giving each other an ornament every year the 1st Christmas we spent together. We've expanded it to the boys (#4 joined us this year). I usually try to pick something that reflects an event from the past year. This year I grabbed ornaments while we were visiting the Alamo. We have fun reminiscing as we decorate.
I agree that you can never have too many lights. I've always preferred white lights on my trees, but recently relented and put some colored ones on -at the request of my boys. I've found a wonderful compromise -using both white and colored lights, however using 2-3 times more white ones. It really gives an amazing effect...you should try it sometime.
P.S. Love your "brown" theme!
I have a small Snowman Smores ornament theme tree. Our big tree would be decorated with all our ornaments that we collected over the years.
I love your trees.
you crack me up! i have seven trees and they all have themes! birds and birds nest, snowflakes, red, silver, and then the kids trees! i am a total theme girl! themes, themes, themes! themes should be my middle name! ha!
Excellent post. My friend put my tree up this year because I had surgery. I have Santas on my tree and then I have colors that I love like deep reds, greens, amber, and gold. I showed off a bit of it in this post on Monday. http://lotsoflaundry.blogspot.com/2009/11/its-most-wonderful-season-of-all.html
And you are so right, you can never have enough lights on the tree!
Your homes is beautiful!!! The race-track tree is very clever. I've never seen anything like that before. That's why I love the bloggy community! =)
I have to disagree. I think having a themed tree is what makes people spend more money on decorations. They will like the tree for a year or two, then they will want to change it up. Just hang what you like, who cares if it coordinates. It is about the memories of each ornament, not if they all match!
Great sharing. Thanks for share your thoughts. I am agree with you and like your post.
I love your trees! They're very inspiring and lovely.
I'll admit that I don't think my trees have a theme. I use the ornaments that have been made/collected over the past many decades- I think it's nicer to use ornaments with sentimental value. Perhaps one could call my theme Mostly Red, Rustic Austrian.
Hmm...I am liking those themed trees though (not as my main one though). I wonder if I can find any small trees on sale and let my girls help decorate them with a theme in mind. I wonder what theme my girls would choose?????
Love this post!
Trees need a theme!
I have 4 trees in my home all with their own theme.
Agree, lights and florals add to the lovely display! Thanks!
I am in total agreement about the lights! My hubs does the lights and one year he bought 400 extra and was exasperated when I said it still needed more! I even had him sign something agreeing that we needed more lights next year.
All trees have a theme. Some themes are non-theme. I love non-theme themes.
And do not challenge me telling me that theme trees cost more! did you read the post? :}
That is all I"m going to say.
what a fun post--i'm totally inspired for my tree now! my favorite tree theme of the past was a beach theme. i had a straw colored grass skirt thing that hung around the food table at a friend's party. it had shell and starfish ornaments attached that I took off and turned into ornaments. i wrapped the table-skirt-thing around and added all the white/neutral/silver ornaments i had. loved it!
I love seeing other people's Christmas trees! I just wrote a blog post about my ornaments earlier this week:
http://itssewsweet.blogspot.com/2009/11/make-season-bright.html
I have enough lights. I am obsessed with lights on my Christmas tree. I stopped counting how many lights I had when it got to 1500 lights. People in my neighborhood hear about my tree before I even put it up! I LOVE lights!
I think the tree with the colorful ribbons is my favorite! Thanks for all the ideas.
I love the white, brown, shades of blues tree. It's my favorite!!!
I want a theme tree but right now that is not happening. The theme here is the kids get to choose a new ornament each year. When the leave the nest the ornaments go with them. We have a wide assortment of tastes. It's fun to see how they grow and change each year and it's reflected in the ornaments they've chosen.
One day I will have my theme three.
Ruth
I just have to tell you guys about this! My DH came home yesterday with a computer keyboard-not terribly surprising since his job is fixing computers. He proceeds to pull off all the keys and drill holes in them and then gets Bug (12 year old boy)to string them on fishing line. They call it:
Nerd Garland.
I am never going to have a pretty tree, am I?
This is an excellent post and VERY helpful! Thank you lots! :)
Our theme is blue, silver, white and snow. I love our tree. We are collecting ornaments each year for a family tree, which we'll probably start in the next year or two. I think I will use the more "traditional" red for that tree.
Love it, love it, love it! Any ideas for a non-tree tree theme? (As in we won't have one this year?) :) Thanks for the ideas (for next year). I love your sense of humour!
Our live tree is decidedly unthemed - the ornaments have been collected over the years from every trip we've ever taken. It has colored lights and has every ornament that I or my children ever made. Each ornament is a memory and we have the best time putting it up each year.
We also have a faux tree that's decorated with white lights and gold ribbon. We tuck all of the Christmas cards that we receive into the branches. I'm thinking I'll start collecting some gold ornaments to go along with it, though.
Loved seeing all of your trees and ideas.
Oh preach it some more about the lights! That's one of my pet peeves. Thankfully my husband likes to put lots on, but I still make sure to remind him to push them in.
It makes such a difference when they're back in the branches instead of wires hanging out on the ends.
Yes, I love theme trees. We always have a regular tree, too. This year's theme is "Gone With the Wind".I used green velvet fabric for the skirt ,Magnolia flowers at the top and cotton bolls on some branches. It was a great opportunity to showcase my "Gone With the Wind" ornaments that I have collected throughout the years
OH I love this!! My very first tree had a theme. Red, royal blue & ivory. It wasn't intentionally patriotic and it didn't come across that way at all. Then after a few years it began morphing as I began to try to put more meaning into the ornaments and decorations - choosing things that reflected our faith and the reason for the season. Out of necessity, the color palette expanded to include basically every color.
NOW.. I've finally hit the place where I have enough ornaments (do you believe there is no such thing as too many ornaments or does that only apply to lights?) to meet that theme, I'm thinking about taking off some of the ones I originally I started with.
I admit, I was VERY tempted at the store the other day, when I saw these GORGEOUS turquoise blue ornaments, to buy up a whole bunch of brand new ornaments and re-design the entire theme. How about a turquoise blue, brown, silver and gold tree? Maybe with a bit of lime. Doesn't that sound lovely? Perhaps what I should do is group my ornaments by color and each year, only pull out specific colors, making it different each year. Now THERE'S a thought...
I have a theme--deep reds, dark blue, and brushed gold. I love the theme. We only have one tree, and that is plenty for me.
