How To Hang A Wreath

This big, beautiful, full and luxurious wreath on my front door was made by one of my favorite friends in real life, Betsy . When I got it home, I just knew that I couldn't use one of those run-of-the-mill metal wreath hangers for this work of berry and foliage art. Why not? Well, the first reason is because I always feel like the run-of-the-mill metal wreath hangers hang the wreath too high. The second reason is that I don't have a run-of-the-mill metal wreath hanger.

Have the same issue? Here's the solution.

Find the fattest ribbon that you have {this one's from Valentine's Day} and loop it around the wreath. A wide ribbon adds instant elegance to any wreath.

Then, hold the wreath up to your door at the height you want it. Have your son who turns eleven today, hold the wreath up for you while you climb up on a chair and nail a couple upholstery tacks in the top of the door through the ribbon. They are flat enough to still allow the door to close. If you have a metal door, you can use a couple of short screws with a flat head.

That's it! Your wreath is now hung beautifully on a stunning non-run-of-the-mill wide ribbon.

If you want a voluptuous wreath like this. You can make one by adding to a wreath you already have {shop the house, scavenge the outdoors} or you can see if Betsy has any left at her etsy shop. We bartered for this one. I paid her a wreath's worth of tassels and we each left feeling like we got the better end of the deal.

Love this idea. I have a wreath that I have been brainstorming how to hang without buying a metal hangar and without hubby nailing it to my pretty new red door. Thank you for this awesomely in depth tutorial :)

And happy birthday to your 11 year old son!

I use a magnetic wreath holder. (I have a steel front door.) Love it. Got it from my local craft store. It's round, with a little hook on it that I can hang the wreath from.

Best thing I ever bought -- I love seeing my wreath on the door (where I want it, and not too high) all by itself; no metal strip above it, "ruining" the look.

Thanks for the ribbon tutorial -- this gives me another option.

great idea. then it doesn't shift around either, like my metal hangers do. or scrape the took-forever paint job off like mine did. hope my door takes tacks. i don't know what to do with the back door made of unidentifiable and inpenetrable material.

Oh - I just passed up a 1/2 way great wreath at a yard sale...they wanted TEN whole dollars. I am going back to see if it's there because I could forage the house for it and make it look almost as good as this...well make that 1/4 as good.

You mean you don't just get out the duct tape and tape it to the other side of your door, then cover that duct tape with another fabulous decoration held in place with more... yes, duct tape? Hmmm... going to have to try the tack thing. I have half debated trying to find a super duty industrial hold everything magnet (like the kind in a motor- yah, hubby disassembles everything) and gluing it to my wreath so it will stick to the door... but, I don't want anyone with pacemakers do die crossing my threashold... however you spell that word.

What a gorgeous wreath! And I love how you hung it sans tacky-run-of-the-mill-over-the-door wreath hanger. I'm prepping to make our holiday wreath this week or next (we'll see how that goes) and I'm going to try to hang it your way. I haven't a clue what these weird military housing doors are made of, so it could be an adventure. Stay tuned!

Lovely! I've always hung the wreaths on my windows with fat, wide ribbon but never thought of using it for the one on my door.

Julia @ Hooked on Houses said...

Whoa! That is one of the biggest wreaths I've ever seen. Do you have any trouble opening the door? ;-)

I use ribbons like this to hang a couple of Christmas wreaths on my french doors in the kitchen each December. The ribbon does make it look festive! Never tried it for the front door, though.

I've got one of those super-magnet hooks on the front door. Unfortunately, it is such a super magnet that it takes the paint off when I try to remove it. Oops. Looks like it'll be a permanent fixture (at least until I'm ready to repaint the door...).

I LOVE wreaths and all things "round". It adds so much character to all the straight lines in my house.

My problem is that I have
1. A storm door
2. No little awning over said storm door

So whatever I hang needs to be either really flat (to fit between the two doors)

or

Weather resistant

Maybe I could hang a snow tire?

I'd love to see you address this dilemma in a future post. Surely I'm not the only one with this problem.

Love,
Sandy Cooper

I love that. I ordered a wreath from the boy scouts at church and will pick it up in 2 weeks, so I'm excited about that. I will definitely try to do your ribbon trick, since it's GORGEOUS and I don't have a metal wreath hangie thing (I was planning to get one).

Question, though. I do have a metal door. If I'm putting a couple screws into the top of the metal door, then I'm going to have to unscrew them when this wreath is done...and then I'll have permanent holes in the door. I don't know that I'd be able to use those same holes next year and each following year I hang a wreath (won't they be stripped out?) And I can't keep making more and more new holes each time...

Everything seems so simple and wonderful in your world, and I admire that. I want to make some of it happen here, but I get paralyzed by the what-ifs.

Perfect wreath- great idea. I hate those hangers anyway because you always forcus on them and not the wreath- so good work. And good use of child labor- Perfect husabnd in training exercise as well!

And the wreath hanger won't scratch your paint, either! Someone probably already said that, I'm sure. : )

The Nester said...

Lindsay--use the same holes. Most metal door are somewhat hollow anyhow --just use the same screws--if you aren't hanging anything then put the store the screws in their place in the door.

Or use a neutral ribbon that you can keep year round and TIE it behind the wreath so that you can un-attach it without having to take the screws out.

It's all about thinking outside the box.

I have a feeling you won't strip the holes.

Wow!!!! What really wows me is that I can do this!! Who knew? !!

Hailey said...

Hi nester. I use the metal hangar that matches my door, then I use the ribbon and tie it to the hanger and the wreath. Same look, but then I also have a pretty bow too.

Kristen said...

This is perfect. Just what I needed! I wasn't quite sure how to hang our wreath on our door without one of those metal hangers...ick. Thanks!

Ali said...

I hang my wreaths the same exact way. Except I use high temp hot glue to secure the top instead of tacks.

HDH. said...

I've been doing this for years, because I agree about the weird height of metal wreath hangers. However, I've always looped the ribbon around the metal wreath frame in the back of the wreath, so it doesn't cover the front of the wreath. Works great. Your idea here would work beautifully for a couple wreaths I have (made from straw, like your fur wreath) that don't have a metal frame in back. Thanks for the tip!

Karrie said...

Great post and awesome wreath!
I always hated that everyone else got to look at my pretty wreath, so I made a second wreath, looped the ribbon through both and strattled them over the door. Wa La! One outside for the world to see and one inside for MY world to enjoy. I used a little hot glue just to keep it from shifting.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!

I love this idea! I have oodles of those strange metal things, but you're right. They never hang in the right spot. I love the wreath you got from your friend, and this ribbon is perfect for hanging it. Well done!
