This big, beautiful, full and luxurious wreath on my front door was made by one of my favorite friends in real life, Betsy . When I got it home, I just knew that I couldn't use one of those run-of-the-mill metal wreath hangers for this work of berry and foliage art. Why not? Well, the first reason is because I always feel like the run-of-the-mill metal wreath hangers hang the wreath too high. The second reason is that I don't have a run-of-the-mill metal wreath hanger.
Have the same issue? Here's the solution.
Find the fattest ribbon that you have {this one's from Valentine's Day} and loop it around the wreath. A wide ribbon adds instant elegance to any wreath.
Then, hold the wreath up to your door at the height you want it. Have your son who turns eleven today, hold the wreath up for you while you climb up on a chair and nail a couple upholstery tacks in the top of the door through the ribbon. They are flat enough to still allow the door to close. If you have a metal door, you can use a couple of short screws with a flat head.
That's it! Your wreath is now hung beautifully on a stunning non-run-of-the-mill wide ribbon.
If you want a voluptuous wreath like this. You can make one by adding to a wreath you already have {shop the house, scavenge the outdoors} or you can see if Betsy has any left at her etsy shop. We bartered for this one. I paid her a wreath's worth of tassels and we each left feeling like we got the better end of the deal.

I love wreaths. I have a lot of c-mas ones and hang them all over the place. The one your friend made is lovely.
Goregeuous!!! Stunning!!! Inspirational!!!
It's wonderful! I have done that one year and looks great! This wreath is GORGEOUS!!! :)Vanessa
Thanks for the tip. I keep pounding new holes in my door to hang my wreath. I think I'll take your advice.
BTW, happy birthday to your son!
This is my favorite way to hang wreaths, they look so much prettier like this. You are mentioned in my post today. Stop by if you get a chance.

Love this idea. I have a wreath that I have been brainstorming how to hang without buying a metal hangar and without hubby nailing it to my pretty new red door. Thank you for this awesomely in depth tutorial :)
And happy birthday to your 11 year old son!
That's a gorgeous big wreath! Just the way I like 'em...
Happy Birthday to your boy! Thank you for explaining how to hang the wreath - I can't wait to see the one you are making this week!!!!
Why madam, your wreath is indeed VOLUPTUOUS. Ha,love that word.
I use a magnetic wreath holder. (I have a steel front door.) Love it. Got it from my local craft store. It's round, with a little hook on it that I can hang the wreath from.
Best thing I ever bought -- I love seeing my wreath on the door (where I want it, and not too high) all by itself; no metal strip above it, "ruining" the look.
Thanks for the ribbon tutorial -- this gives me another option.
Such a pretty, pretty wreath! Love that!!!
great idea. then it doesn't shift around either, like my metal hangers do. or scrape the took-forever paint job off like mine did. hope my door takes tacks. i don't know what to do with the back door made of unidentifiable and inpenetrable material.
I hang my wreaths like that and could never use a metal hanger again. LOVE the wreath, too!

That is a pretty wreath! I had a gorgeous one but in two moves it got destroyed. I need to make a new one this Christmas season. Can't wait to see all the rest of your beautiful holiday decor!
Thanks for sharing this tip. I would have never thought to do that, which is why I read your blog. ;)
great tip!beautiful wreath
So beautiful. Love the wreath. Check out some of my Christmas decor! I have had so much fun decorating!
Love it! Thanks for the idea and the inspiration to make a wreath!
Happy Birthday to your son!!!!
Also, that is a beautiful wreath and a great idea for hanging it...thanks for sharing it!
Hugs...Anita
Oh thats lovely! I'm going to have to try it when I find a good Christmas wreath this year!
Oh - I just passed up a 1/2 way great wreath at a yard sale...they wanted TEN whole dollars. I am going back to see if it's there because I could forage the house for it and make it look almost as good as this...well make that 1/4 as good.
Great idea. The ribbon does add a touch of elegance. I'm definitely going to try this....AND Happy Birthday tp the handy eleven year old!
Oooohhh...that wreat is DIVINE! Makes my heart all a flutter!
You mean you don't just get out the duct tape and tape it to the other side of your door, then cover that duct tape with another fabulous decoration held in place with more... yes, duct tape? Hmmm... going to have to try the tack thing. I have half debated trying to find a super duty industrial hold everything magnet (like the kind in a motor- yah, hubby disassembles everything) and gluing it to my wreath so it will stick to the door... but, I don't want anyone with pacemakers do die crossing my threashold... however you spell that word.
What a gorgeous wreath! And I love how you hung it sans tacky-run-of-the-mill-over-the-door wreath hanger. I'm prepping to make our holiday wreath this week or next (we'll see how that goes) and I'm going to try to hang it your way. I haven't a clue what these weird military housing doors are made of, so it could be an adventure. Stay tuned!
Lovely! I've always hung the wreaths on my windows with fat, wide ribbon but never thought of using it for the one on my door.
Whoa! That is one of the biggest wreaths I've ever seen. Do you have any trouble opening the door? ;-)
I use ribbons like this to hang a couple of Christmas wreaths on my french doors in the kitchen each December. The ribbon does make it look festive! Never tried it for the front door, though.
I've got one of those super-magnet hooks on the front door. Unfortunately, it is such a super magnet that it takes the paint off when I try to remove it. Oops. Looks like it'll be a permanent fixture (at least until I'm ready to repaint the door...).
Stunning!

WOW that is one GORGEOUS wreath!! I love it!

Happy Birthday, 11 year old!!!!
I love big, fat red ribbon!
I used it on my garland (thanks for the tutorial)
That is a beautiful wreath and thank you so much for the idea! I have been trying to figure out a way to hang mine-we got a new door and the metal hanger wouldn't work (door wouldn't close) and I couldn't bring myself to use a suction cup (glass door). Thank you and HAPPY BIRTHDAY to your son!!!!
Always full of good ideas. (And happy birthday to your 11 year old!)
Nester :), Just wanted you to know I posted today about my garland inspired by your tutorial! Thanks again for all of your decorating inspiration!!
Blessings,
Stacey
Happy Birthday to your growing boy!
That is such a simple, elegant way to hang a beautiful wreath!
Laughed at your comment today on my blog... Can you believe I don't even have 1 DRAWER in my bathroom!!!! 2 sinks, 2 cabinets under them 10 feet of counter space, toilet, shower, oval tub...NO DRAWERS!!! Dumb construction guys... I keep a lot of my brushes and hair stuff in a bread box on my counter! Dumb construction, Dumb!
Love it! I can do this!!!
BEAUTIFUL!!!
Happy Birthday to the Wreath Hanger!
your ideas are great!
I was given a nudge to you...by a blogging buddy...and can I say...I LOVE your craftiness....being a new SAHM...I'm trying to test my crafty wings....I will be loving this tip for when I hang a wreath....and lots of other fab-u-licious projects....you so have a new follower....and Happy Turkey day....
Great job and nice trade! I love trading things...I wanted you to come over to my blog and check out my mistreatments...Let me know what you think...Meme
Beautiful wreath - I love the way the ribbon gives it such a finished look. I just posted a project using your wonderful "ragamuffin" idea - if I knew how to make one of those copyright "c"s I would have to honor your work.
Love the wreath! Great idea instead of the metal thingy...Thanks for sharing.
Love that wreath!!!!
i do it the exact same way..love a big simple ribbon and NO BOW!..love that wide midori satin ribbon but sometimes i just save ribbons off of various packaging..like one time i got an amazing wide beautiful ivory ribbon off of a target shabby chic sheet set i bought..ha!
Very pretty wreath. Thanks for sharing this information.
Found you through the Blessed Nest! Love the garland- The feathers are a great idea! I used feathers in my bouquet and arrangements for my wedding... I just love the look they bring to an arrangement:) I'll definitely be back!
I LOVE wreaths and all things "round". It adds so much character to all the straight lines in my house.
My problem is that I have
1. A storm door
2. No little awning over said storm door
So whatever I hang needs to be either really flat (to fit between the two doors)
or
Weather resistant
Maybe I could hang a snow tire?
I'd love to see you address this dilemma in a future post. Surely I'm not the only one with this problem.
Love,
Sandy Cooper

Thank you so much! I was just wonder how I was going to hang this HUGE wreath that I have. I am pretty sure I don't have a door hanger either. I can't wait to get my stuff out this Friday!
Great idea and adds such an elegant look!
Great idea!!! I'll have to remember that this weekend when I hang my wreath!
I really needed to know this! Thanks!
I love that. I ordered a wreath from the boy scouts at church and will pick it up in 2 weeks, so I'm excited about that. I will definitely try to do your ribbon trick, since it's GORGEOUS and I don't have a metal wreath hangie thing (I was planning to get one).
Question, though. I do have a metal door. If I'm putting a couple screws into the top of the metal door, then I'm going to have to unscrew them when this wreath is done...and then I'll have permanent holes in the door. I don't know that I'd be able to use those same holes next year and each following year I hang a wreath (won't they be stripped out?) And I can't keep making more and more new holes each time...
Everything seems so simple and wonderful in your world, and I admire that. I want to make some of it happen here, but I get paralyzed by the what-ifs.
Perfect wreath- great idea. I hate those hangers anyway because you always forcus on them and not the wreath- so good work. And good use of child labor- Perfect husabnd in training exercise as well!
Stop over and see my progress!

And the wreath hanger won't scratch your paint, either! Someone probably already said that, I'm sure. : )
Lindsay--use the same holes. Most metal door are somewhat hollow anyhow --just use the same screws--if you aren't hanging anything then put the store the screws in their place in the door.
Or use a neutral ribbon that you can keep year round and TIE it behind the wreath so that you can un-attach it without having to take the screws out.
It's all about thinking outside the box.
I have a feeling you won't strip the holes.
Wow!!!! What really wows me is that I can do this!! Who knew? !!
Hi nester. I use the metal hangar that matches my door, then I use the ribbon and tie it to the hanger and the wreath. Same look, but then I also have a pretty bow too.
This is perfect. Just what I needed! I wasn't quite sure how to hang our wreath on our door without one of those metal hangers...ick. Thanks!
I hang my wreaths the same exact way. Except I use high temp hot glue to secure the top instead of tacks.
I've been doing this for years, because I agree about the weird height of metal wreath hangers. However, I've always looped the ribbon around the metal wreath frame in the back of the wreath, so it doesn't cover the front of the wreath. Works great. Your idea here would work beautifully for a couple wreaths I have (made from straw, like your fur wreath) that don't have a metal frame in back. Thanks for the tip!
Great post and awesome wreath!
I always hated that everyone else got to look at my pretty wreath, so I made a second wreath, looped the ribbon through both and strattled them over the door. Wa La! One outside for the world to see and one inside for MY world to enjoy. I used a little hot glue just to keep it from shifting.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!
I just love wreaths and I really love that idea for hanging it. You are the best!!
that is sheer lovely! i need to jazz mine up a bit. it's very plain. oh and I have one of those run of the mill metal wreath hangers. d'oh! :-)
I love this idea! I have oodles of those strange metal things, but you're right. They never hang in the right spot. I love the wreath you got from your friend, and this ribbon is perfect for hanging it. Well done!
I am linking to this post in my Things to Write Home About tomorrow.
I always thought those run of the mill wreath hangers were hanging my wreath too high...now I have Nester confirmation that I WAS RIGHT!
Stunning! I love it!
