Decorating Kids' Rooms

Growing up, my mom let me decorate my room however I wanted. I moved the furniture often, and painted the walls a light shade of pink. One time I picked tiny flowers, pressed them and then stuck them to the molding around my doors with hairspray. When I was in the brand name phase I hung bags and boxes from my favorite stores on the walls.

Having this kind of freedom when I was a kid helped me become more confident in taking risks and trying new things as an adult. I like to offer the same freedom to my children. While I'm a firm believer in "there is no wrong" when it comes to decorating, I do keep a few guidelines in mind while decorating my kids rooms. The key is to use items that are timeless, durable and will grow with your child. Invest in the basics.

*Get a sturdy bed. Avoid that plastic, race car toddler bed that you'll have to give to your neighbor next year. You will trip on it and curse it's very cartoon character name. Instead, look for a bed that your child will be able to use for all of their years in your home. Have an extra full size bed in your attic? Paint it a great color and use it until they move out of the house.

*Buy a solid color comforter
. Avoid the Star Wars comforter and just get the sheet set instead. Simply display their favorite Star Wars toys on a shelf over the bed. That way, next year when they like the Green Bay Packers you don't have to go out and buy all new stuff. You can just switch out the sheets and display cheese and the like.

*Invest in a
real lamp. Don't opt for miniature fro fro lamps just because your child is young. Having a full sized, respectable lamp that will grow with your child will save you from replacing it later. Lighting can make or break a room. Put a lamp right next to the bed for reading.

*Have a seat.
A place to sit even if it's just a wooden chair is so useful to reach items high in the closet or sit and put on socks. If you can afford it, get a cushy chair and place it next to a lamp to inspire snugly reading and comic book drawing.

*Use color wisely.
I love color in a child's room. I love color everywhere and if we weren't renting then all of our walls would be painted in rich colors and stripes. Use bold color on the windows with mistreatments and fun trims. For the money, you can't make a bigger impact than paint. And in only a few hours time it will transform a room. Allow your child to have some say in the paint color, you can easily change it later. Another way to bring color in is to paint the furnishings.

*Let them decide
. I pick the furniture and supply the lighting and bed linens, they get to do the rest. Right now, my boys have strung Christmas lights and taped up 25 of their favorite race car drawings. They love it and so do I.

It's their room and as they get older, they should have more input on how they want it to look. By supplying a few basics, you will ensure that your child's room is utilized to its fullest potential and that they have a great backdrop to create a room where they love to be.

What was your room like when you were growing up?

What great advise! I did try to keep the "bones" of my kids basic with accessories that can come and go.

Oh goodness!!!! I liked to change my room too!!! I had white furniture all my years at home and kept it through my 20's while I was single and rented. I went through a stage in elementary school where I loved rainbows. I had the most BEAUTIFUL!? pale Easter-y colored bedspread that touched the floor with layers of ruffles. I also had white eyelet bedding (another bedspread) trimmed in pale blue. When I was in junior high and high school, I no longer had bedspreads. I moved on to comforters!! In high school, I had navy and white striped walls and navy bedding with red accents. There were others, but those were the standouts.

This is exactly what I plan to do as soon as we move from the nursery to the big boy room! I love the idea of color....I think we may try a nice (not to crazy) orange!

I got a nice pine beds for the kids a couple of years ago, but It need that red your boys have in
their beds... What color is it?

I was always allowed to decorate my room however I liked...I painted my ceiling blue and I painted clouds on it...I loved it! My wall color changed frequently but my biggest risk was probably the mint green I chose when I was 12! When I was a teenager I covered an entire wall with those poster board squares, then I covered it with pictures...this kind of thing was really important to me and I will definitely let my daughter have that type of freedom too!

I need to let my 6 year old have alittle more freedom with her stuff. But I have 3 kids --6, girl, 3, girl & 2, boy --in one little 12 x 12 room! Plus, I have VISIONs in my head, I tell you, of that perfect kids room. Right now it looks awful. Ugh. Anyways, I agree, decorating freedom is important. I always moved my stuff at home & could spend hours moving my room around. I played with miniature dollhouses forever so I could redecorate & just "see if it looked better over here". I know my 6 year old is headed for the same!

By the way, thanks for showing your boys room. I've tried to live up to your other tobacco road pic for way too long!

I too let my kids have the freedom to do whatever they want in their rooms. But, I did have to say "No" and put my foot down when my youngest son wanted to get cans of spray paint and paint his walls Camo.

I had a charming brass daybed... now my daughter has that charming brass day bed.

No, I wasn't allowed to touch anything. We had monthly inspections on drawers and my mom couldn't stand knick knacks... Yikes! It sounds like I need counseling!

Right now my boys want to paint the room tie-dye. I haven't quite been so easy going on that idea. Right now it's decorated with maps and ships... and I'm trading that for tie-dye? I think they'll have to wait 'till they can grow dread locks and recite the entire Bob Marley collection. We're working on a plan though.

unicorns, butterflies, 2 green walls & 2 pink walls....I was a child of the late 70s/early 80s. I moved my stuff around A LOT. We just re-did my kids' rooms in December (pics on my blog). I have 2 kids (boy 10 & girl 8) who have shared rooms since girl was 2. It was a bittersweet separating - but now they both have LOVELY rooms - with equally my influence & their own "original" artwork on the walls as well! :) C.

Oh, that's so great that you give your kids that creative freedom! I loved decorating even as a child and from the moment I got my OWN room I felt the need to change it each year! Haha, I was a growing, changing girl! My Mom never stopped me! In fact, she would buy me the supplies to do so as part of my birthday present! God bless her! One year I painted the inside of my bedroom door in bright argyle.... I was so ahead of my time, haha ;)

I got to decorate as much as I wanted and I've had to let go with my oldest daughter and let her do as she wishes with her room. Oh my, it isn't easy! We have totally opposite taste of each other. Thank goodness my youngest daughter loves pink and shabby chic as much as I do!

My room was at it's best when it was covered floor to ceiling and I do mean all four walls and doors with Duran Duran posters. Ah, the days.
Currently we are re doing my oldest's and my 11 year old son's room. Brandon is taking pictures of things he loves and we are having the digital photos transfered onto to a canvas. So cheap and I think he is going to love it. It's his fun way of contributing and having the things he loves around him.

My mom was like you!

I always had this serious walnut antique bed in which several generations have been born and died. It is stately yet slender.

You can imagine in the 60s the bed wasn't very mod but mom lightened it up with 2 wild wallpaper patterns on the wall. (pink and white stripes on the walls visible from the hall, and pink/orange daisies on the other walls). I was free to arrange the furniture and hang my own art (kittens, the Love Bug, Secretariat) ... the bed worked.

As a teen in the late 70s, same bed. This time blue chambrey walls, bentwood rocker, bookshelves made from bricks and boards, macrame hanging things, Tolkien and Shepard illustrated art, record album covers.

They were very pleasing rooms to grow up in.

Great post!

I also was allowed to decorate my room to my taste. I went through a Victorian phase with roses and what-not. I went through an abstract art phase with lots of clocks (mostly non functional) hanging on the walls. At one point I wanted to paint my walls black but I decided against that. Teenagers!

I currently make most of the decisions in my girls' bedrooms but I let them help. Even though I know they love PINK I decided not to have pink walls. I just can't stand the thought of seeing Pepto Bismal all over my walls!

I'm glad to see that I actually do those things in my kids rooms.
My son & I were talking last night about getting rid of his "realtor beige" walls & painting his cool cubby/hang out room a great color.
My room wasn't anything wild - I did have the teen pictures up for a while & when in college I went through a black & white old hollywood picture look.

As a young girl, I had a lilac room with a Care Bear border. When I got older, I got into the Looney Tunes phase and painted opposite walls blue and red (it was BOLD!). My brother had bold colors too, going with favorite sports teams and at one time had a deep purple on two of his walls.

I also moved my furniture all the time. I did this until recently, when my furniture became heavy and then of course, when I became pregnant. I can't wait to work on my baby's room!

Love your list, it's great!

We just finished painting my twin boys' room--bold aqua with a chocolate brown vertical stripe running the length of the room. They love it! Plus we bought chalkboard paint so that we can tackle the two small alcove walls with that and transform the otherwise-dead space into a reading/play nook. I'm having fun just seeing THEM having fun!

Dana and Daisy said...

My mom let me move the furniture all around, too. My mom picked the wall treatments in my room. She went a little crazy. Two walls were painted bright yellow and two were wallpapered with the loudest orangiest big flowers she could find. I loved it! It was the 70's and I also had a crushed velvet bedspread in avocado green!

The only think I did not like was all my hand me down furniture which dad would never let me paint. Considering my tastes at that age, he was probably right.

Building Dave said...

okay, so I had ugly paneling walls, and was not allowed to paint. Also, could not tape things to the wall and could only use pins (like you sew with) not tacks to place a poster on....these were all my dad's rules

Needless to say, I LOVE to paint now. I have also given my girls a section of thier wall that they can paint however they want (ala "the Last lecture")...they are 4 and 6. My oldest is wanting to redo her room, which I have been putting off b/c of time...

Looks like I need to make that a priority. Thanks for the reminder.

I am loving the Christmas lights - my boys have that going on right now, too.

Growing up, I was able to do pretty much whatever I wanted to do in my room except paint the walls. But sadly, I don't want to let my boys have that same freedom! Right now, their room is fun for them because they have HUGE bunk beds that become forts, firetrucks, deer stands - whatever they want.

So far, wanting to put stuff on the walls hasn't been an issue.

My mom and I always worked on my room together, to make sure I liked it and she approved. First, I had my yellow room with a yellow gingham comforter, then I had a pink room with a striped bedspread, then I had a blue room with the same striped bedspread. I think I was the picky one, and I totally think it carries over to today! I am still picky!

My mom let us do whatever, too! At one time I had a whole Native American thing going on. I even used twigs as my curtain rods. In high school, I painted my room bright purple with lime green trim (she even let me paint the ceiling fan every other!!) My sister's room was bright yellow with orange trim.

My son's room looks like a museum of his entire life. He wants it that way! I do the same with the neutral comforter and then the decorative sheets. I remember one of my rooms when I was younger had a lifesized poster of David Cassidy. I wasn't really into a lot of posters, mostly artwork. When I was in high school, I made a huge collage in my bedroom closet. I cut out things that I liked out of fashion magazines, and covered the walls of my closet with them.

Growing up I was so proud to be in a family heirloom bed. I was all about plaid and my mom and I painted a free-from 1 ft wide plaid border around the room. Jean duvet cover helped mask the pink and flowers comforter I had from before. Then when I moved to the basement I covered the concrete walls with plaid fabric and hung my pictures from the ceiling with fishing line or pinned them to the fabric. I also did a collage of my fave fashion photos. It was a great time to explore and make the space I had my own.

When I was small I had a yellow canopy bed with a mural of a turtle and a flower on my wall...painted by my mom. It was perfect for me and could have encouraged my love of turtles!

My two boys had theme rooms in our old house. We've just moved so they have next to nothing now! My oldest son has printed out photos of his favorite band on the wall and we hung up one of his guitars. I do think they needs more input on the room as they gets older. I want them to be creative thinkers!

Now that you have posted this, I have to face reality and fix it. Suck.

Oh, I had a pink and olivey green room at one point. Had "dolls" in the wallpaper on one wall, pink walls on the rest. And a pink and green floral spread that my mom STILL has! Talk about vintage! I have one daughter that likes that as well, she is my fashion kid:) My youngest recently gave us each drawings for our doors.

Let's see...Bobby Sherman, David Cassidy, Leif Erickson, KC and the Sunshine Band to name a few... definitely late 60's and 70's!! But fun! It was just hard to get the scotch tape off the walls!!

Good advice! My parents still have my childhood furniture that they bought from a neighbor nearly 40 years ago when I moved from a crib to "big girl" furniture -- it's in the guest room now and looks great.

I always shared a room with my sister when I was growing up and I think our favorite look was the orange shag carpet (covering the hardwood floor!), white chenille bedspreads with yellow daisies, and yellow cafe curtains. My dad enjoyed woodworking, and he turned an old coffee table into an upholstered bench in our room. Wish I could remember what was on the walls, but that was a long time ago!

Can I just tell you how much this picture reminds me of my own son's bedroom from about 10 years ago?! The quilt, the curtains, the colors...but especially the Christmas Tree lights!!! lol, so cute.

When I was growing up, my mom did most of the decorating but she did let me pick the wall color...a really sweet pink (how unique!) with green carpet and a floral quilt, table square, canopy and valance done in pink, green, white with yellow accents. It was fresh as a daisy! The furniture was antique white and I had pink toleware lamps. It was so adorable. I still love the pink-white-green combo to this day.

I always had a HUGE mass of dolls and stuffed animals on my bed, too, and told them each goodnight every night! :) As a teen, my brother said my room looked like an old lady's room because I requested cherry wood furniture and had antiques from my grandmother and a collection of old hats, etc. heehee. I spent many an allowance on new bedding and pillows! My friends teased me then about always redecorating. I guess some things never change!! :)

When I was 14 or 15 I got to pick out my bedding as my Christmas gift. It was a lovely blue and white floral set from Laura Ashley. I had very traditional taste even then! We wallpapered in tiny white and blue stripes, with a coordinating border (I'm dating myself now). I got to hang my crafty collages, and bulletin boards with pictures of friends, etc. I had secondhand furniture that used to be my Grammy's -- very pretty cherry wood though. A desk and old wicker chair that was my mom's when she was single rounded it out. I loved that room! It was very "me", and I was constantly changing the furniture around.

No offense to my mom, but she decorated for my sister and I who shared. And since my Grandma made us pink and purple quilts, that's what everything revolved around for a very. long. time. We had it better than my brothers--they got clowns. I liked what she did to our walls when we were little, but as I got older, I think I waited for the ok before I did anything to my room.

I'm going to be different with my kids. Especially because I don't know what to do and my daughter's been begging for green walls and other green things (green's her favorite color). Green's not my first choice, but I want to instill confidence in her like your mom did for you. She must be very cool. My mom would have FREAKED if I'd hairsprayed flowers to the molding. That is, if I'd ever thought of doing it. (They really stuck?! awesome.) Did you decorate Emily's room too?

I completely agree with you. I think it's so important to let kids have some say in their own space. My son is 14 now, but we agreed on the basics in the room (bedding, etc) and then I left the rest up to him. You're right, having the option of decorating a room makes a huge difference. I still remember the cute kitten comforter set and matching curtains that I HAD TO HAVE at seven, and then how much I hated them at 12. Waste of money. My poor mom.

I still hate cats. I'm scarred permanently because of that bad choice of a comforter.

Apparently I liked cats for a few years as a child, or at least the kittens. Now they give me nightmares.

So, just a warning if you're planning on doing that Wizard of Oz theme in the nursery. Consider the ways that you can be emotionally scarring your child?!

I have let my kids decorate to their hearts content. It's something about letting their creativity flow and a place they can call their own. It is after all their personal space and if I expect them to keep it clean why not let them design it. My mom was great growing up as she let me basically take creative control of my room, one year I bought three colors of paint and we splattered it on the walls. It looked amazing and all my friends loved my room and my mom for being so "Cool"!

so fun, everyone wants to comment about their childhood room. Wow, what does that say? I think it is so neat reading these comments the nostalgia and warm feelings there are. Why is it that we loved and felt secure in our childhood rooms and now often find things to not like about our homes? hmmm . . .

My early childhood room was pale pink with a full sized bed covered in a pink and white floral bedspread. The green shag carpet that came with the house and no one liked became "grass" for our Barbies and Fisher Price Little People. My mom used an opaque projector to put a big strawberry shortcake on my wall and my grandma painted it. It was really special to me.

When I was ten I wanted to go bold instead of pastel and went with a bright sky blue paint, white daybed (ah, bed of my dreams!) and white bedding with red, green, yellow, blue and purple hearts. Unfortunately I picked a pretty juvenille bear border. I really wanted it. My mom tried to ask me if that's what I REALLY wanted but she let me get it anyway.

When I was 15/16 I wanted to go pastel again and had help from my first boyfriend (ha!) and my mom and dad to paint my room walls white with pale blue "sponging" and the ceiling pale blue with white "sponging". It was like a big cloud and I had a pink and white striped comforter. Oh I loved that cloud room so much!

Thanks for the trip down memory lane! Kelly

That is great advice. We are currently building a new house and are getting close to moving in. I have struggled more over decorating my 3 year-old little girl's room than any other room in the house! We decided to buy her REAL furniture and get rid of all the hand-me-down stuff, but it was hard finding a bed, shelves, etc. that would last her until she goes off to college. But I finally decided on just plain white furniture and solid bedding, i can always change out the throw pillows and curtains and other accessories. I've been so worried about her room, (not sure why b/c like i said, she is only 3!!) but after reading your ideas today, i thought 'hey, i did okay then!' - thanks nester! oh, when i was in high school, i completely covered a wall in my room with pictures. The wall had this really ugly wallpaper that I hated, so i covered every square inch of it in photos and artwork from my art classes. I loved it! Not many parents would go for that though - the aftermath is 5000 pin holes in your wall. Gees this is a long comment - sorry!

Oh Nester...you took this post right out of my head! This is exactly what I was going to post about very soon. Think I'll wait on that one, yours was great! I started my decorating business doing kid's rooms and I always go with color and not characters. Favorite characters are great for accessories, not the major stuff. We always bought our boys their favorite character pillowcase, I didn't even spring for the sheet set! Great post...

Such great tips! We are moving kids to different bedrooms soon, so we will be able to implement these tips! Thanks!

I moved things CONSTANTLY! I had Holly Hobby for quite a long time. I would seperate my room into 'areas'. Desk area, bed area, dressing area and then made my closet (large by 'kids' standard) into a 'hideaway'.
I went through a 21 Jumpstreet phase, TG it was short lived. At one point dolphins and unicorns...living together in peace. THen Koalas, then horses, then those theater faces.
My bed, dresser and desk were white with faux wicker fronts and I used them all through college and the desk is sitting in my studio right now.

I had posters of kittens and Mark Spitz when I was younger. Canvas paintings (landscape) as a teen!

Sure wish I would have read your kids' room decorating advice when our kids were younger...the plain comforter and character sheet sets? Brilliant!

*I should state that I had posters of kittens, AND posters of Mark Spitz. Just in case someone's envisioning kittens in a pool with Mark Spitz!

I agree. My parents let me move furniture to my heart's content and my mom was always willing to sew up a new set of curtains. As for my children, my son didn't care what I did in his room but my daughter was very creative. People thought I was crazy when she was eleven and I let her paint a mural over her entire bathroom. One of her walls still has 'graffiti' all over it...Bible verses and special signatures from her friends as she was growing up.

I love to let my kids decide on their paint and decor, since it is the room they will live in. I want them to have good memories of their childhood in the room of their dreams so that they have another way of expressing themselves.

My oldest daughter creates the most beautiful oil paintings, and has her own gallery covering the wall above her bed, so that it visually looks like a very eclectic head board.

My baby daughter has a positively pink room, complete with a princess canopy that is the only appropriate choice for such a girly girl.

*Sorry for such a long comment*

You were such an inspiration to me while I was decorating my kid's rooms! My (at the time) 5 y.o. wanted a TRAIN room...complete with a train bed, and a life-sized trian mural on his wall.....WHAT? We compromised by using vintage-look train sheets, and framed vintage postcards of trains on his wall. I have a few other train memorobilia throughout the room, and topped off by a "Nester-inspired" ragamuffin swag! His room is my favorite room of the whole house.

My room as a child was always very messy! LOL! But I do remember having a GIANT rainbow cut-out on the wall, in the corner.

Thanks for posting on my itty-bitty blog today! I am honored!

Yes, great advise! I was given free reign with my room as well. My favorite room design from childhood was when I painted my walls a sky blue color. Then my mom and I painted clouds on the walls. We had one wall with paint pens and all my friends signed my wall when they came over. It seriously was the coolest room ever!

oh, he's a cutie. oh, the room is great too :)))) did you see my post awhile back on changing abby's room? from pink to bright green, brown, blue. fun!

After being a mom for 30 years (with 11 kids), all I can say is Amen, Sister! (especially about the race car bed and the Star Wars sheets.)

I have 3 sets of bunk beds in my boys room right now - and i painted their room a silvery grey and gave them long, plaid silky (yet masculine!) curtains from Target. I figure at least the room has good 'bones' and what they do with it from there is up to them.

Great post - as always!

Hey Nester, My mom let me do what ever I wanted in my room too. Being the youngest of 7, my older siblings thought I was spoiled of course. I however appreciated at a very young age the freedom mom gave me. That is why I believe I think, "outside the box". I was allowed too. Thanks for reminding me of how mom watered that seed for me in my growing years. Hugs from Maine http://sophie4me.blogspot.com/

Mom let me have at it when I was in high school.

It was a Santa Fe/desert theme...complete with a wooden cactus in a terracotta pot full of rocks. I just wish she would have let me rip off the butterfly wallpaper. It didn't match my theme. Not good for my OCD. Still bugs me. Can you tell?

I truly believe I love to decorate because my mom let me do the rest. Just like you said she supplied the bed and bedding etc and I got to paint... YELLOW my favorite color still today and I would move my furniture all the time and I had the smallest room in the house!

My mother allowed us to decorate our own rooms as well. In high school, after shuffling us around to different rooms, I got the one that used to be my mothers - and inherited all her flowery wallpaper with it as well. I was going to take it down and paint (by myself and she was going to let me), but in the interim, I asked if I could draw on it - and she said "Sure- why not?". I wrote the names of every band I loved on those walls, had my friends sign them and leave me notes like it was a giant yearbook. I drew portraits of my favorite musicians, wrote my boyfriends name a million times, and even used it to keep score of card games on once...lol. The best was painting the Rocky Horror Picture Show insignia - lips and all - right above my head. I drew the Broadway style lights on the wall around it as if it were a marquis and painted them with glow in the dark paint :) To top it off, I dressed the room in Christmas lights, much like your son did.

To this day that is still the most favorite bedroom I've ever had :)

As a teenager I had one solid wall of posters of my favorite hunks from Teen Beat Magazine! Reading your post made me realize so much about the way I decorate now. My mom also gave me creative freedom with my room. Come to think of it, my mom would move the living room furniture around at least every few months. I have learned so much about myself from this post! You are awesome.

I need to dig through my old photos to show what my room was like. Actually, make that ROOMS. My mom moved us 3 girls around a few times. No matter where it was, my bedroom was ALWAYS my favorite place. I spent a lot of time in there. My favorite room was in my high school years. It felt more like an apartment. I had 2 beds that I dressed up to look like couches. I had a tall shelf unit with my fish aquarium and all my books. I spent a lot of time at my desk, and I had my favorite photos on my bulletin board. One of my bedroom walls was next to the kitchen. When it was dinner time, my mom would knock on my wall. My mom pretty much let us decorate our rooms as we wanted, and I try to do the same with my kids. Well, my boys really don't care. The oldest son still refuses to let me paint his walls. They are the only white walls we have in this house. The other son has racing posters and U of O posters everywhere, but he let me paint his walls and his night stand. He's the neatest of all 3 kids. Bed made every day. Youngest child, DD, has the smallest room but spends a lot of time in there. Reminds me of myself! While I love sharing my room with my husband (the MASTER bedroom), I miss my own room. Maybe one day I'll have a craft room or something.

I have to say I definitely agree about buying a real lamp. I hate those tiny little lamps they sell for nurseries and kids' rooms. I found a real lamp (white ceramic) on clearance at Target for under $10, bought one of those "do it yourself" lampshades, covered in fabric that matched my son's nursery bedding, and added some ball fringe to the bottom and ribbon to cover the seams. It turned out so cute! And it provides much better lighting in the nursery! Wish I could figure out how to attach a photo to a comment...

My mother passed down to me the desire to rearrange furniture.. so as soon as I was able I would rearrange my bedroom furniture and also help my mom rearrange the furniture in our house. I dabbled in the painting a little but my heart's desire was redecorating. So.. it really bugs me that our current living room in our home is so tiny that it's near impossible to arrange the room never mind trying to rearrange.. it needs work. Also, I'm glad to see that my boys aren't the only ones who like to tape their masterpieces up on their wall and door. You know I love anything that you do.

I had a canopy bed that I LOVED. When I got older, we removed the canopy part and it became a four poster bed. It moved to my first condo with me and I used it until I got married less than two years ago.

I always had the girly girl matching floral bedspreads with pretty painted walls or coordinating stencils. My mom let me look through the catalogs and pick out my own bedspread when it was time for a new one and I loved it! I would dog ear page after page and think about it for weeks before I chose one. I agree that letting your kids have input into decorating their room encourages their creative spirit and helps them develop confident independence.

As a teenager I had peach walls and painted my wood furnature pale yellow. Both colors picked up the accent colors in my comforter.

Of course my closet wall were full of Tiger Beat pictures too!

I love your son's room. Actually it looks similar to the one for my little boy. I too did plaid with denim. A real classic for boys. He LOVES trains so we got removeable decals from pottery barn and sheets with trains. Since he LOVES Thomas trains we let him get a lamp and nitelight. When he grows out of his train obsession we can just take down the decals and get a new lamp. Bedding can be expensive!! Thanks for all your clever and resourceful ideas! Happy Nesting!!

I totally loved to decorate my own room, of course. My desk was a favorite spot to decorate. And I will never forget the balloon light that I picked out! UGH! But I loved it.
Here is my toddlers room! You are so right on, girl!!!http://worthwalkingtoward.blogspot.com/2008/08/calebs-room-before-and-after.html

I so relate to this post! I too love to decorate, and when deciding on furniture for my girls' room I set out for pieces they'd have until they're 18. I reupholstered 2 mismatched twin headboards (purchased at 80% off!) and made a trumeau mirror to hang on the wall in-between. The room is neither overly childish, nor too sophisticated. And they love it.

Now, where have I been that I'm only finding you now?

Love this topic, LOL... we had 4 kids and all 3 girls had to share a room... it was craziness. I tried to appease the kids' wants for self-expression on their wall colors, but one girl wanted orange and lime green, one wanted soft blue, one wanted black! The boy went from wanting navy blue with stars to black, to red and purple.
We did have navy walls and one with star wallpaper on blue, but it really didn't look professionally done ~and was a big pain when we got around to selling the house!
In the new house we are almost empty-nesters and so the clutter factor is non-existant now and it seems I've a lot less fear in decorating. Perhpas those things are related, but perhaps it helps fill up space to do the muraling I've done:
4 horses running on one wall, and a pirate cove entry on another (the remaining boy at home finally got his red and purple walls!)
You can see the results on my photoblog - look in the "My Projects" folder: http://ParadiseRanch.spaces.live.com/
(comments welcome)
Since there are no more kids to shuttle, cook, clean up after or decorate for, I've begun to have LOTS more ideas and lots more time to discover those of others. I hope my pictures inspire you.
Thanks so much for sharing;your site is absolutely inspiring.

My bedroom is where I got my decorating bug. It was decorated with posters of rock groups and singers and photos of my friends.
Our teenager's room has PB Teen and Target items throughout it. I'm planning on purchasing some denim insulated curtains and getting some new bedding this week.
