31 Days to A Better Dressed Nest :: Day 16~ Introduce Your Favorite Color

It seems so elementary, making sure we each incorporate our favorite color in our homes. Don't worry about what the current trendy colors are {currently purple and gray I believe} use the colors you are drawn to. I once had a friend who loved purple and she worked it into her home beautifully! I never disclose my favorite color, and I'm sure you are wondering what it could possibly be.

Your color can easily be worked into your home

  • use acrylic paint to repaint candlesticks, frames and baskets
  • incorporate fabric with a pillow mistreatment or window mistreatment
  • spray paint a table {spray paint comes in so many colors}
  • hang plates in your favorite colors

What's your favorite color to use in your home.

Red, definitely red. I have been trying to tone it down a bit lately, it IS possible to have too much red. :)

Richella Parham said...

Oh, green. And then cobalt blue. And red.

I'm afraid I'm not very subtle. Oh, well.

So you NEVER disclose your favorite color? Really??

Christine said...

A dash of soft pink in the bedroom (a pillow, candle, plate) and my other favorite, green, in many different shades all over the house. Love green - just never get tired of it.

Lindsay @ Not2Us said...

My favorite color is a bright green...somewhere between lime and kelly. Definitely planning on using it to it's fullest potential!

Blue. Our entire downstairs in blue, white and khaki. I love it!

My favorite color is brown. I have different shades of browns in my home and I love it! Its very earthy, neutral..

I feel I have a color disease. I love red in a home, but blue is my favorite color, followed by grey. But I love greens and yellows too. I'm slowly training myself to choose fairly neutral colors for my walls, furniture, etc. so I can change out colors quickly and less expensively. And, I can adjust seasonally. I switched my bedding over from white with green to red with white for the cooler weather. My bedroom walls are grey, curtains white..perfect for instant changes.

Red in my kitchen - it's on all my countertop appliances, in my curtains, dish towels, aprons. But overall, I use quilts hanging on walls to accentuate color. My bedroom is painted a luscious shade of lavender, and I've hung a gorgeous white vintage quilt with appliquéd flowers, including some in lavender, on one wall, which is a showstopper (and also takes some of the heaviness of the color back out of the room).

I've always believed that if you just listen, the room will tell you what color it wants to be. I've used colors that I never thought I would but that's what the room told me to do!

I love a strange combo of colors (red and moss green) but surprisingly it coordinates well since I have a touch of eclectic in my decor. Monkeyballs are my latest green decor item, love those things!

Hmmm, earthy colors for me, although I am starting to like blues/greys. I am redecorating 3 rooms because I no longer like the colors and feel of the room. I did them around 8/9 years ago. It's definitely time for a refreshing change! :)

Audra Lynn said...

i think i just have a favorite color combination. several rooms in my house have ended up being red, white, and blue. i even ordered fabric for my kitchen curtains that i thought was orange checked with a little blue stripe (it looked like it in the thumbnail!), but no, it's pretty much red. Orangey-red, but red nonetheless.

Catie said...

Mine is definitely green. Hands down.

But I have always dreamed of a red kitchen! *sigh* I was totally inspired by a pic you (pretty sure it was you ;) posted a while back -the kitchen cabinets were painted red - LOVED it!!

Jennifer P. said...

orange! I got so angry when it became a trendy color. I didn't ever want my beloved orange to look dated :(

I love sw renwick olive 2815 color. I just painted it in my half bath. my favorite pillow right now is orange with earthtone embrodry circles. the best color choice I have made for my house was painting my front door, from the builder white to glidden old cedar. your series is wonderful. thanks for running it!

Bright golden yellow! We live in a place that has alot of gray cloudy days, and the yellow feels like sunshine to me.

My favorites - green and blue together, like earth and sky. They were the colors in our wedding and they are slowly creeping up around our house more and more. With big punches of red here and there.

Loving this series!!!!

Hmmmm... This could be a bit of a challenge. My favorite color is pink! All shades from soft to bright bright pink! Not sure how my husband would feel about this or even how I would go about adding pink to our home decor... Any suggestions?

P.S. What on earth is a 'moneyball?!'

The Nester said...

Jennifer P--cracking me up! Yes, Orange is so IN now, makes it not so special huh? But you are not a fair weathered orange fan. You will always love him even when everyone else is into purple.

My favorite colors depend on the space - reds and yellows for eating/cooking spaces; greens and browns for living spaces; and pale blue, black and white for our bedroom/bathroom. Of course, this is coming from the girl who rents and can't paint the walls yet! Who knows what my preference will be in a real house!

Lisa-Marie said...

Red and purple. Mostly red for decorating. Most of my clothes are red or purple too. Our new flat its all neutrals and aged looking wood, and we aren't allowed to paint, so we've put ALOT of coloured stuff in!

Kathy @ Creative Home Expressions said...

I absolutely agree with you! I never use a color because it's the current trend. If it's a color or combo of colors I like, I use it.

Janell @ House of Fifty said...

Orange, Turquoise, Green, Browns with a hint of Gray and Silvery Beiges.
That's a lot! I could add to it...oh, and Pink. Okay, I'll stop.

I don't think I can settle on just one favorite color--sadly, I like red and blue and Americana is so out, but I've worked around it. Or, maybe my favorite color right now is infant poop, mustard seed yellow--since I'm seeing it all. the. time. 24. 7.

the undomesticated wife said...

I don't have one favorite color really...but I gravitate toward earth tones (greens, browns, deep reds, terra cotta, golden yellows, etc.). My entire house is done in earth tones, and that way, I can move items from room to room and they "go."

Sadly, though I live nowhere near the seashore, I am drawn to the whites, sands, blues and greens of a beach home. I try to work them in using slightly more Minnesota-friendly versions, but in magazines, I am pulled to those relaxing images with white slipcovers and shells...

Seriously, how I feel about purple and grey walls is nearly equal to how I feel about skinny jeans. I just don't get it. I refuse to get skinny jeans or paint my walls purple!

I lean towards aqua and robin's egg blues. I love pink, but realized that a little can add up way too quickly, so I toned that down. Blue is so soothing and oh so pretty.

amylouwhosews said...

Baby/Turquoise/Aqua blue became my signature color on accident - when I realized most of my clothes, accesories and then my convertible VW bug were all that color. . .

I rent so I've started painting furniture to bring the color in. I like to mix it up with a bright fresh spring green too. It makes me very happy :).

Pauline Wiles said...

I love purple but find it tricky to work with. I'm pleased it's suddenly trendy again, as it means there are a few more things available to buy in that shade. But I certainly wouldn't want it in every room of the house!

Nicole-Lynn said...

I agree to use the colors you are drawn to rather than what's just trendy... I love neutral colors light blue, beige and white.

Anonymous said...

I love this entire series - really ingenius because of both the inventive ideas and the simple ones. My husband loves browns, and our bedroom has a lot of robin's egg blue, slate gray, spring green and brown, and, while it's got a lot of feminine elements, it's the brown that makes him love it and feel "masculine" in the midst of some pretty cute toile. ;o)

Kelli said...

Yellow...always yellow. It is such a happy color.

Katie said...

Black for me! Classic.

Becky Darlington said...

I think you're favorite color is robin's egg blue.

Mine changes a lot. Right now I'm in love with green. Blue is frequently my favorite color though. I also like barn red but only as an accent color.

Precision Quality Laser said...

Oh Nester! Now you know you have totally piqued our interest on what your favorite color is....is it just because you share so much of yourself out here in blogland that you want to keep a little bit of your private life private? If so, we understand :)

My color favorites change as I change...I am just now truly discovering what my decorating style is.

Right now my color du jour would be green...hazelly emeralds and darker moss greens. But if you came to my house you would see walls in all different colors! :) My only stipulation with painting walls is that the rooms cannot CLASH with each other.

Okay, now that was a verbose comment...signing off now! By the way Nester I am loving this series!

Blessings!

Robin's egg blue--I am obsessed with it. Just did my kitchen cabinets a great robin's egg blue (Valspar Lyndhurst Duchess Blue) and am painting lamps and accent tables this shade.

Also lavender. I never tire of it and have had my dining room this shade and love it.

Meg said...

I might be totally wrong, but my guess is that your favorite color is that beautiful light blue. I see it so often in your design..but, I could be wrong! My favorite colors are green and yellow. But I also love blue. I'm a very outgoing person and like bright colors more so than neutrals.

Kristen @ Moms Sharpening Moms said...

Sunshiney yellow!!!

Grace @ Ruby Moon Designs said...

My favorite colors are light shades of blue, green, brown and I like creams & whites. I don't like darker colors much right now...especially since we live in a rental house that has all wooden floors and walls...it feels so dark and dreary...so I enjoy lightening it up with my color faves.

Amanda @ Serenity Now said...

Well, my most favorite color is pink, but I don't like to use it in the "public" area of my house. I sort of went overboard in my oldest daughter's room...it looks like pink threw up in there.

I'd like to go for a more neutral look and add splashes of color here and there...I'm workin' on it.

Once I get all the clothes that need to be ironed (blushing) off of my desk in the back hallway, I will probably try to find some ways to incorporate pink into my little crafty area. :)

Sara said...

Green, Yellow, and WHITE.
Love thos colors! I live in an area where brown and tan have been very popular colors for several years, people are so suprised when they come to my home and are welcomed my by cheerful butter yellow walls and white trim.

You are right, you've got to have your favorite colors in your home!

Lindsay said...

Definitely Pink....bight, lipstick pink. Sadly, I don't have any pink in my house.

Unknown said...

Blues, especially aquas and robin's egg. But with lots and lots of neutrals. I always feel good with beiges, creams, white, black and brown. Love your series. You make me smile regularly and that is a good thing;)

Little Lovables said...

I love gray and white... not really colors, but it works for me.

We also love orange and blue, so that can be found in little splashes here and there.

The Nester said...

Finally!

Yes, Meg, my color is my dirty robin's egg blue. I was being sarcastic about not revealing the color. tee hee.

Lots of green girls-- I heart green too!

The Nester said...

y'all.

I was so being funny saying I don't tell what my color is. Or trying too. Just look at the photo and decide what my color is. Or my blog. Or my bedroom. But I also like toile, is that a color?

{northern cottage} said...

of course - it depends on the room & the use & the feel -- I'm so in love with the nice soft aquaish blue (lighter than robin's egg) alongside hints of a deep red & there's always BLACK to balance it all down. Cream too to freshen up!!

Lindy said...

My favorite colors are Williamsburg blue and any shade of pink. My kitchen is exclusively blue and white and I love it. It is hard to use pink in decorating, but I am much happier if there is a little bit of pink or rose in every room.

Spelled With An I said...

I have so many favorite colors it's hard to choose. I'm betting yours is a light slate or greyish blue.

Lindsay @ Makely said...

Green is my favorite color. Sadly, my DH is red/green color blind, so he doesn't like me to use it much because he can only see it as grey. Blue is the runner-up, so I use it A LOT.

Handmade Mama said...

My favorite color is green so it is in each room in my house but in different shades...I love it!

Unknown said...

Aqua, turquoise, teal, robin's egg...Any shade of blue with a bit of a green undertone and I'm in love! I've always been a blue girl. When I still lived at home, my parents painted my room the color I picked - blurple (blue + purple). I still love that color, but I've decided it's a little too moody for me to decorate with.

this was a great post for me- very timely! we are repainting every wall in our new house, and i was starting to feel boring... very soft, creamy, light colors everywhere (except the dining room- dark blue). but i really want a calm, soothing environment in our home- something to combat the chaos. i can liven it up with accessories & fabric at any point, but i won't repaint these walls for a while!
so right now, favorite colors:
sherwin-williams White Hyacinth, Topsail, Tidewater, and Rice Grain. I also like Rain in small doses- our master bath!
pictures coming soon on my blog... but just of empty rooms with painted walls! it's a long process.
thanks for this series- it's lots of fun to see what you write each day!

You know I just realized that I don't know any more what my favorite color is! It used to be green but not so much-I have a yellow bedroom I love, the office I'm in now is classic sky blue, I have a pinkish tan room that is SOOOO warm and cozy it's like a cashmere sweater, and my kitchen walls make you feel like you're inside a mango-and I love them all! One thing I do notice is that a dark red is represented in some way, large and small, in each and every room...so I guess maybe my new favorite color is dark red!

Good series, you've given me lots to think about and sent me in new directions!

I love cobalt blue and white together and have always been drawn to those colors. I also like a tiny bit of fuschia thrown in like with glass see through vases here and there. When it comes to jewelry, I like the jewel tones again. Because I like bright and cool colors, does that mean I'm a bright and cool person????? he he

I'm so glad to have found you and the Nesting Place, because it's helping me embrace what I like rather than trying to change to be just like everyone else. But then, I also need the great decorating advice you give here on your blog so that I learn how to incorporate my flashy side into a rich looking home that isn't too flashy! I want the "Welcome Here" atmosphere with a bit of "I didn't expect that but it's really cute."

Thank you very very much for all of your advice.

Blue, I will always love blue the best. I have changed the decor in my home to emphasize other colors, but there is always some blue. I love my blue and white china and will till the day I die and I have pieces of it tucked here and there. It makes me happy. I do have a new love - red. And blue looks great with red, and with yellow, and with green, and . . . . .

Pink! I can't wait to have a baby girl. I also really like blue and white. It's my go-to decorating color scheme.

LOVING this series!! I have not done all the ideas- yet- but some are so doable, and I FINALLY dared to paint my girls' little round table and chairs- yay!

My color seems to change as I grow older... when I was 10 it was purple... when I was 14 it was yellow... at 17 bright orange... in college pale green, in my 20's dark green, and now I loving bright red, and sage green... maybe not together, though? ;)

Alison said...

I'm a gray girl, but had no idea it was chic right now! My husband thinks it's somewhat of a Debbie Downer color, but I love it. It comes in so many shades, so many moods; it's mysterious and couture--all of which, I am not.:)

Moore Minutes said...

red and yellow! But I am loving the trendy blues right now too.

I don't know what my fav color is! I am trying to pay attention to things I have and see that I like, and hopefully I'll figure it out!

eeekkk... my favorite color is pink (any shade of it just makes my day!) however I just can not see using it to decorate anywhere except my daughter's room, or during Valentine's and Easter for little bits of decor. My mom calls my 6 year old's room "pink-a-licious" because I've gone wild in there with everything from WILD hot pink to pastel pink (my daughter shares the love of the color).

I guess I could stick with my second favorite color... white! White is a color, I think?!!
